Lisa Kay Fish
Lisa Kay Fish, 39, of DuQuoin, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2002 at 8:10 a.m. at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.

Mrs. Fish was an R.N. at TNS Barnes Emergency Room and Intensive Care at John Cochran V.A. Medical Center. Lisa was a remarkably compassionate, talented young woman who made the world a better place. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

She was born January 11, 1963 in DuQuoin, the daughter of Leon L. and C. Kay (West) Longshore. She married Robert David Fish on October 15, 1988 at DuQuoin.

Surviving are her husband, Robert D. Fish of DuQuoin; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Longshore of DuQuoin; sons, Matthew of Sand Diego, Calif. and Jonothan of Phoenix, Ariz. and daughter, Elizabeth of St. Charles, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents and son, Connor.

Funeral services were Tuesday, July 2 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park in DuQuoin.

Friends called at Neal-McClure Funeral Home Monday, July 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 7:30 to 9:45 a.m. at which time services moved to the church for the funeral mass.

Memorial donations may be made to the donor's choice.

Norma Boswell Scott Gray
Norma Boswell Scott Gray, age 61, of Sesser, died June 11, 2002 at 10:45 p.m. at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

Mrs. Gray was born April 15, 1941 to Warren and Thelma Boswell of Sesser. She married Julius Russell Gray on January 11, 1980 in Sesser.

She is survived by her husband; sons, Michael Scott and wife Charlotte and Kendall Scott and wife Lesa and a daughter, Cindy Bejma and husband Brian, all of DuBois; three step-sons, Russell Gray and family of Chatham, Brett Gray and family and Craig Gray and family, both of Benton. She is also survived by her mother, Thelma Jones; one sister, Zella Bates of Sesser; one brother, Warren Gayle and wife Ruby of Tampa, Florida; one uncle, Jesse Boswell of Sesser and a special friend, Aggie Dolce. Mrs. Gray is also survived by six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild, two nephews, two nieces, one great-niece, five great-nephews, three great-great-nephews, one great niece, several cousins and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, one sister and grandparents.

Visitation was Thursday, June 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser.

Funeral services were held at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Friday, June 14.

Thomas A. Groves
Thomas A. Groves, 82, of Staunton, Ill., passed away Monday, June 24, 2001 at 4:40 p.m. at Fair Acres Nursing Home in DuQuoin.

Mr. Groves was born December 16, 1919 in Weston, West Virginia, the son of Luther and Cora (Arthur) Groves. He grew up and attended school in West Virginia. He served in the Army in Germany during WW II. He worked as a coal miner in West Virginia and when he came to Illinois in 1964 he continued working for coal mines above ground. He retired in 1982 at Hoyleton and moved to Staunton in 1990.

He was a member of Methodist Church in West Virginia. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge of Staunton and the Shriners of E. St. Louis.

He married Della Farley and she preceded him in death. He then married Geraldine Scott on August 27, 1965 in Midland, Michigan.

Mr. Groves is survived by a step-son, Carl Scott of DuQuoin; daughters, Phyllis Groves of Nettie, W.V. and Karen, Mrs. Clyde Lilly of Levisay, W.V.; step-daughter, Katherine, Mrs. Ivan Glade of Staunton; five brothers Raymond Groves of Craigsville, W.V., Luther Groves Jr. of Canvas, W.V., David Groves of Nettie, W.V., Kenneth Groves of Nettie, W.V., Herby Groves of Nettie, W.V.; three sisters, Sylvia, Mrs. Ralph Amick of Levisay, W.V., Margarett Ritter of Richwood, W.V. and Imogene Pierce of Summersville, W.V.; two grandchildren; six step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Marshall Groves.

Funeral services were Friday, June 28 at 11 a.m. at Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville with Rev. Elmer Fenton officiating. Interment was in Bethel cemetery in Reno, Ill.

Friends called beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Masonic Rites were conducted by Greenville Masonic Lodge 245 A.F. & A.M. at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials may be made to Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital.

Edward Harsy
Edward Harsy, age 68, of Pinckneyville, died unexpectedly Saturday morning, June 22, 2002 at his home.

Ed was born in DuQuoin on January 16, 1934, the son of Edward E. and Jessie (Welch) Harsy. He married Patricia A. Keene on February 6, 1954 in Pinckneyville and she survives. During his lifetime, he was a farmer, member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Pinckneyville, worked as an operating engineer at Freeman United Coal Company in DuQuoin for 30 years and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.

Survivors include his wife: Patricia of Pinckneyville; sons: Mark E. Harsy of Pinckneyville and Mitchell D. Harsy and his wife, Rebecca, of Vergennes; a grandson: Nathan E. Harsy and his wife, Katie, of Tamaroa and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter: Amanda.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 25 at 11 a.m. in the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, with Reverend James Bush officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park, DuQuoin.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Joseph E. House
Joseph E. House, age 76, of Tamaroa, passed away Thursday morning, June 6, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Joe was born in Perry County on December 8, 1925, a son of Harley M. and Mary (Bailey) House. He married Pauline Keith on August 18, 1951 and she survives.

During his lifetime he served with the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict, was a coal miner at Consol Burning Star Mine #2 for over 40 years prior to retirement and was a member of Nine Mile Baptist Church in rural DuQuoin, having served as church treasurer for over 40 years. He was a 50 year member of Mitchell Lodge #85 A.F. & A.M. where he served as a Master five times and was currently serving as secretary, a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local 9721 where he served as Financial Secretary for 30 years, a member of the Perry County Shrine Club, was treasurer for the Nine Mile cemetery Association, an avid golfer and enjoyed attending Pinckneyville Panther sporting events.

Survivors include his wife: Pauline; three daughters: Dorothy Walker and her husband, Gary, of Greenville, Ky., Luann Lipe and her husband, Robert, of Pinckneyville and Alice LaFond and her husband Mark, of Littleton, Colo.; a sister: Marian Miller of Shobonier, Ill.; three grandchildren: Nolan and Garret Lipe and Derek Walker; two sisters-in-law: Jean House of Pinckneyville and Earline House of O'Fallon, Mo.; a brother-in-law: Oran Logan of Tamaroa and numerous other relatives and friends.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Milas and Harry; a sister: Flossie Logan and a brother-in-law: George Miller.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 11 at 11 a.m. at the Nine Mile Baptist Church with Rev. Kevin Carrothers officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park, DuQuoin.

Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, on Sunday from 5 until 9 p.m. and on Monday from 8 until 9:30 a.m. then at the church until services. Masonic services were held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Nine Mile cemetery Association or Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

Marybelle Haines
Marybelle Haines, 93, of Du Quoin, passed away at 10:50 P.M., Friday, June 14, 2002 at the Fair Acres Nursing Home in Du Quoin.

Marybelle was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Du Quoin. She was a member of the United Methodist Women Keturah Circle, she had been Sunday School Superintendent for many years, a member of the administrative board and a member of the Friendly Bible Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Du Quoin Library Board, Monday Club, Domestic Science Club, Garden Club, Perry County Home Extension and the PTA. She was association chairman of the Du Quoin Girl Scouts.

She was born June 15, 1908 at Du Quoin the daughter of William A. and Keturah (Jones) Kimmel.

Her father owned and operated Kimmel Hardware which was on the corner of Main and Mulberry Streets. She attended Wheatley School but was home the years between 4th & 6th. grade because of rheumatic fever. Her mother taught her and kept her up with her studies. After graduating from Du Quoin Township High School, she attended Ward Belmont in Tennessee for a year. From Ward Belmont she attended the University of Illinois; joined Pi Beta Phi sorority, was president of the chapter her senior year. She graduated in the 1931-32 school year with a major in French. Her father told her that she now had the book knowledge but that she needed the practical knowledge, so she sailed for France missing the U of I's graduating exercises.

She spent the summer in Dijon, France, brushing up on her French along with other students from all over the world. In the fall she went to Paris and enrolled in the Sorbonne. She was sent to the school of phonetics since she spoke French with a German accent, plus taking classes at the Sorbonne. She spent a year in France; from France she attended Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont. She graduated from Middlebury with a Masters degree. She taught English and French for 3 years in Milford, Delaware.

From Delaware she returned to Du Quoin and married Richard W. Haines on July 28, 1936, he preceded her in death December 31, 1993.

She is survived by four children-Suzanne H. Crawford and husband Paul of Robbinston, Maine, Richard K. Haines and wife Mary of Du Quoin, Mary Jo Novak and husband Charles of Decatur, Sarah A. Cook and husband Robert of Crofton, Maryland, ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother William Dean Kimmel.

Funeral services were at 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at the First United Methodist Church in Du Quoin with Rev. Carl Mesiti officiating.

Friends called from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P M. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church.

Interment was in the Tamaroa cemetery.

The Searby Funeral Home of Du Quoin was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Du Quoin, Du Quoin Library or the Marshall Browning Hospital.

Charlene Cook Beckham
Charlene Cook Beckham, 80, of Brownsburg, Indiana, passed away Sunday morning, June 23, 2002 in Brownsburg.

She was born October 24, 1921 in DuQuoin, the daughter of Charles and Elsie (Turner) Cook. She married Floyd Beckham on September 2, 1940 in DuQuoin and he survives.

Also surviving are three children, Leah Car, David and Tom Beckham; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one sister, Hazel Hampleman of Bartow, Florida and many nieces and nephews. Charlene was the youngest of 10 children and surviving sister, Haze, is the oldest at age 99.

Preceding her in death were her parents; four brothers, Nowlen, Schuyler, Lyle and Russel Cook and four sisters, Lillie McGuire, Mary Lundberg, Lorene Hower and Leah Hiscutt.

Services were conducted on Wednesday, June 26 at Conkle Funeral Home in Avon, Indiana with Pastor Michael Beumont officiating. Burial was at West Ridge Park cemetery in Brownsburg.

Rosswell L. Hayden
Rosswell L. Hayden, age 84, or Carbondale, died at 3:30 pm Monday, June 24, 2002, at Memorial Hospital, Carbondale. He was born August 24, 1917 in Neoga, IL to William and Sarah (Love) Hayden. He married Betty Roddy in Salem November 22, 1951. She survives.

Other survivors are a daughter and son-in-law, Melas and Tom Millar, of Grayville, IL, son and daughter-in-law Jeffrey and Doris Hayden of Anna, son David R. Hayden of Manchester, MO, son and daugher-in-law Brooks and Janet Hayden of DuQuoin, and son Tracy Hayden of Carbondale, nine grandchildren and sister Mildred Huddlestun of Salem. He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

Mr. Hayden had worked as a lab technician for the state of Illinois before his retirement. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Army.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 27, 2002, at the Huffman-Harker Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Schell officiating. Burial was at Paradise cemetery, Salem. His granddaughter Sarah Hayden played taps. The visitation was from 5 until 8 pm Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Lone Oak Baptist Church, Energy, IL, where Mr. Hayden was a member.

Alice Faye Flatt
Alice Faye Flatt, 52 of Mulkeytown, passed away at 11:55 P.M., Monday, July 8, 2002 at her residence.

Alice was a security officer for the Illinois Dept. of Agriculture. She was of the Christian faith. She was a member of the Du Quoin Legion and VFW Auxiliary.

She was born January 15, 1950 at Du Quoin, IL the daughter of Harold R. "Botchie" and Betty J. (Miller) VanHoorebeke.

She married Larry G. Flatt on September 16, 1988 at Paducah, KY and he survives.

She is survived by her husband of Mulkeytown, mother- Betty J. VanHoorebeke of Pinckneyville, two sons- Keith Nickens of Pinckneyville, Brett Nickens of Du Quoin, daughter- Wendy Kelly and husband J. P. of Coello, four grandchildren- Tyler Nickens, Sydney Kelly, Cole Kelly, Mat Kelly, sister-in-law- Beverly VanHoorebeke of Tamaroa, nephew- Richard Wayne VanHoorebeke II of Tamaroa, mother-in-law- Eileen Flatt of Herrin.

She was preceded in death by her father and a brother- Richard Wayne VanHoorebeke.

Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, July 11, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Rob Mathis officiating.

Friends called from 10 to 11 A.M., Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.

Friends may make memorials to the Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Santo P. LaRocca
Santo P. LaRocca, 82, of Du Quoin, passed away at 8:30 A.M., Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at his residence.

Santo was a retired salesman. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin. He was a member of the Du Quoin American Legion, VFW and the Knights of Columbus. He was a US Army veteran of W.W. II.

He was born April 6, 1920 at Du Quoin, IL the son of Pete and Josephine (Cicardo) LaRocca.

He married Virginia Bova at Du Quoin she passed away in 1992.

He is survived by two daughters- Allison Stroud of Portland, OR and Erica Lowry of Jacksonville, IL, sister- Sarah Rusiewski of Du Bois, two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers- Joe and John and three sisters- Rose, Mary and Vivian.

A Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:00 A.M., Friday, June 7, 2002 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin with Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin. The Rosary was recited at 9:30 A.M. Friday at the funeral home.

Interment was in the Sacred Heart cemetery at Du Quoin.

Military graveside rites were conducted by the Du Quoin American Legion Post.

L. Eileen Roper
L. Eileen Roper, 67, of Centralia, passed away at 10:59 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Mrs. Roper had been a housewife and homemaker. She was a member of Gilead United Methodist Church and the VFW Auxiliary.

She was born October 16, 1934 and raised by Homer and Laverne Mathis. She married Archie Dean Roper on October 5, 1956 in Mt. Vernon and he survives.

Mrs. Roper had lived in Centralia all her life.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Roper is survived by three daughters, Ruth Ann Weisel and husband Randy of Centralia, Donna Queen and Friend Dale Heustis of Centralia and Betty Knapp and husband Eric of Tamaroa; two brothers, Homer Mathis and wife Evelyn of Centralia, Jack Mathis of Centralia and Larry Mathis and wife Marty of Florida; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and five grandchildren, Laura & Joey Weisel, Kristen Queen and Heather and Andrew Knapp.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter, Sharon Roper.

Funeral services were Wednesday, June 5 at 11 a.m. At Gilead United Methodist Church with Harold Quick officiating. Interment was in Gilead cemetery.

Friends called at Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. on Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be made to Gilead cemetery Association.
