Julia Ann Starr
Julia Ann Starr, 56, of DuQuoin, passed away at 7:30 p.m. Friday, October 11, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Ms. Starr was a homemaker. She was born June 4, 1946 at Arlington, Ga., the daughter of Willy and Mary (Hughes) Smith.

Surviving are her son, Don Moody of San Antonio, Tex.; daughters, Mary A. Simion of Mulkeytown, Marie Moody of DuQuoin and Rachel Lange of Calamus, Iowa; brothers, Henry Wethers of Zepher Hills, Fla., Henry James Smith of San Antonio Tex. and Clarence Smith of Arlington, Ga. and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and a grandson.

Funeral services were Tuesday, October 15 at 11 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Dr. Rev. John Lewis officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park.

Friends called at Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Tuesday from 9 to 11 a.m.

Idalia Mary Starkweather
Idalia Mary 'Leah' Starkweather, age 84, died at 10:40 a.m. Monday, October 28, 2002, at her residence. She was born April 11, 1918 in Sesser, Illinois to Felix and Marianna (Posivento) Lorenzini. She married George Starkweather on September 11, 1939. She was a seamstress at Bridal Originals in DuQuoin until her retirement.

Mrs. Starkweather is survived by her son and daughter-in-law George and Lee Ellen Starkweather of Carbondale, two granddaughters, Jane Elizabeth Enos and her husband Dan of Kalamazoo, MI, and Alice Marie Starkweather of Carbondale, one great-granddaughter, Idalia Margaret Enos, and one sister, Gloria G. Boyd, of Scottsdale, Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977, and one sister, Jennie Gilmour.

Graveside services were at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 31, 2002 in Sunset Memorial Park in DuQuoin, with Rev. Danny Boyd officiating. The visitation wasfrom 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 30, 2002 at Huffman-Harker Funeral Home in Carbondale.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association.

Martha Eloise Jenkins
Martha Eloise Jenkins, 83, of Edwardsville, formerly of DuQuoin, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2002 at 12:52 a.. at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.

Mrs. Jenkins was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in DuQuoin.

She was born April 23, 1919 at Olean, Mo., the daughter of Harry and Laura (Sigrist) Rea. She married Robert D. Jenkins on May 18, 1940 at Eldon, Mo. and he preceded her in death on April 29, 1982.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Carolyn Jenkins of Highland and George Dellmar and Katrina Jenkins of Balcatta, West Australia; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Richard Harr of Mililani, Hawaii, Roberta and Larry Johnson of Carbondale and Martha and Ken Ramsey of Edwardsville; one brother, Harry Rea of Bridgeton, Mo.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, George and sister, Lila.

Funeral services were Friday, October 25 at 1 p.m. at Neal-McClure Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Dickerson, Rev. Jim Donahue and Rev. Dale Clemens officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.

Friends called at the Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 7:30 a.m. until time of services.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or the American Heart Association.

Harry Feazel
Harry 'Phil' Feazel, 74, of Centralia, passed away at 7:46 a.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at the St. Mary's/Good Samaritan Hospital in Centralia. He was born on June 9, 1928 in Harrisburg, the son of Henry and Easter Burton Feazel. He married Elizabeth Jean Stowers and she passed away on January 19, 1975. He is survived by three sons, Phillip Benjamin (Gaye) Feazel of DuQuoin, David Allen (Gina) Feazel of Centralia and Rodney Rean Feazel of Centralia; a brother, Gordon Gwynn Feazel of DuQuoin; an aunt, Vivian Lasley of Indianapolis, Ind.; a special friend, Pat Lusch of Centralia; eight grandchildren seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; a brother, Burton Feazel, and two sisters, Beverly Feazel and Barbara Whitnel.

Mr. Feazel was a lineman for Illinois Power Co. for 42 years and an Army veteran of WW II. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Centralia, VFW Post #2055 where he was past commander and past district commander. He was a member of the American Legion Post #456, past chef degar for the American Legion 40/8, past president of Bears Local 101, a member of the Centralia Moose Lodge, UCT and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 18 in the Boggs Chapel of the Styninger-Pacey Funeral Home in Centralia with Rev. Michael Karunas officiating. Burial was held in the Elmwood cemetery in Centralia with full military rites accorded by the VFW Post #2055 and American Legion Post #456. Friends called from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church in Centralia.

Mildred Lorene Rowland
Mildred Lorene Rowland, 85, of Christopher, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2002 at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin.

Mrs. Rowland had worked for the U of I Extension Service and as a pie baker at the Maid Rite. She was a member of Oak Grove Christian Church and attended First Christian Church in Christopher.

She was a charter member of Christopher Saddle Club, Franklin County Homemaker Extension Association and was a 4-H leader for many years.

She was born July 26, 1917 in Sesser, the daughter of Stanton Eugene and Gusta Boswell Cockrum. She married Dwight A. Rowland on December 11, 1938 in Jackson, Mo. and he preceded her in death.

Mrs. Rowland graduated from Goode-Barren Township High School. She lived in Christopher for 63 years.

Surviving are her children, Jerry and Sharen Rowland of Christopher, Bob and Verna Rowland of Olathe, Kan., Rex and Lois Rowland of Christopher, Joe Rowland of Christopher, Shirley and Frank Dry of Springfield, Linda and Harley Foutch of Murfreesboro, Tenn. and Jane and Wayne Lewis of Birmingham, Ala.; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and two brothers, Eugene and Virginia Cockrum of Sesser and Donald Ray Cockrum of Winter Haven, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two great-grandchildren, Brooke Overturf and Jeremy Tomei.

Funeral services were Sunday, October 13 at 2 p.m. at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher. Interment was in Mulkeytown cemetery.

Friends called at the Gilbert Funeral Home after 5 p.m. on Saturday.

John Julius Kuhnert
John Julius Kuhnert, age 96, formerly of Cutler, passed away in the Fair Acres Nursing Home in DuQuoin on Monday, October 28, 2002 at 4:15 a.m.

John was born May 13, 1906 to August and Elizabeth (Loos) Kuhnert of Pinckneyville. John married Hilda Marie Tanner on January 20, 1931. John and Hilda lived in Cutler for more than 50 years. They had three children, Wanda Lee, Jerry James and Randall Rex.

John worked as a coal miner for over 40 years and was a member of the UMWA. He last worked at Southwestern Illinois Coal Co. before retiring in 1972. John was also active with the Cutler Senior Citizens.

John liked to hunt and fish. His most enjoyable hobby was 'hogging' catfish with his sons, Randy and Jerry and grandson, Monte. John enjoyed working in his garden.. Throughout his retirement, you could find him in his yard at his home in Cutler. John was a devout Christian. He considered the 'Great Commission' his personal commitment from God. He shared Christ at every opportunity. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cutler.

He is survived by his wife, Hilda of Fair Acres Nursing Home in DuQuoin where she and John had been residents for three years; two daughters-in-law, Jane Kuhnert of Cutler and Linda Kuhnert of Sparta; grandchildren, Eric Hahs of Novato, Calif., Monte Kuhnert and wife Kristie of DuQuoin and their children, Jerry Elvis and Haley Rose, Jill LaVieri and husband John of Lombard and their daughter, Joli Marie, Krista Kuhnert-Gainer and husband Jay of Nashville, Tenn. and their son James Vincent 'Rex' Gainer IV and Ginger Kuhnert of Carbondale and her children, Spencer Thomas Kuhnert and Maci Elyse Collins. He is also survived by a sister, Augusta Lacy and two brothers, Les Kuhnert and Lee Kuhnert, all of Pinckneyville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three children, Wanda Lee Hahs, Jerry James Kuhnert and Randall Rex Kuhnert; a grandson, Kurt Hahs; eight brothers and sisters, Harry, Lillian, Vera, Louis, Willard, Dale, Leonard and Bonnie.

Funeral services were held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Wednesday, October 30 at 3 p.m. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery in Pinckneyville.

Visitation was held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home on Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Cutler.

Christopher Arthur Savage
Christopher Arthur Savage, 22, of Bloomsdale, Mo., passed away Friday, October 25, 2002 in St. Genevieve Care Center.

He was born in St. Louis and was a roofer.

Surviving are his mother, Donna Meyer of Bloomsdale, Mo.; three brothers, Shane Davis, Donald Savage and Richard Savage; two sisters, Kimberly Savage and Michelle Savage and grandparents, Harriet Diveley and Romeo (Doris) Savage.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services were held Monday, October 28 at 2 p.. at Kutis South County Chapel in St. Louis. Interment was in Lakewood Park cemetery in Afton.

Friends called Sunday at 2 p.m. at Kutis South County Chapel.

James Neal
James 'Bus' Neal, 81, of DuQuoin, passed away at 6:25 a.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2002 at his home.

Mr. Neal was the previous owner and operator of the Neal Funeral Home. He was a member of First Baptist Church in DuQuoin, DuQuoin Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Ainad Shrine and was a charter member of both the Kiwanis and the Perry County Health Department.

He was born August 9, 1921 in Carbondale, the son of Dallas I. and Lillian M. (Kelley) Neal. He married Marjorie Ann Sapp on April 26, 1940 at Perryville, Mo. and she preceded him in death on May 26, 1986.

Surviving are one son, Bill Neal of DuQuoin; two daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Kay) Smith of DuQuoin and Ms. Janet Rheinecker of DuQuoin; one sister, Shirley Hemmer of DuQuoin; six grandchildren, Melanie Jenkins of Swansea, Clinton Smith of DuQuoin, Roger Neal of DuQuoin, Kimberly Neal of DuQuoin, Kathy McKenzie of DuQuoin and James Rheinecker of DuQuoin and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother, Willard Neal, one sister, Lucy Redman and one grandson, Terry Neal.

Funeral services were Friday, October 11 at 11 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bob Dickerson and Rev. C.L. McKinnies officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.

Friends called at Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Friday from 7:30 a.m. until time of service.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund.

James Robert Bilderback
James Robert Bilderback, 58, of Du Quoin, passed away at 10:15 A.M., Thursday, October 3, 2002 at his residence.

James was the owner-operator of B & B Pawn Shop in Du Quoin. He had worked for General Motors and sales of CMI equipment in mining. He had owned Trader Jim's Restaurant in Marissa, Wye Market Grocery Store in Marissa, TJ's Restaurant in Sparta, and Brandy's Bar & Grill in Sparta. He had worked for H.R. Chevrolet of Lenzburg and Svanda Chevrolet of Sparta. He was a member of Old Du Quoin Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of Vietnam. He was a member of Ainad Shrine Temple, Du Quoin American Legion, Masonic Lodge 881, Du Quoin VFW, Du Quoin Elks Lodge, Du Quoin Chamber of Commerce.

He was born July 15, 1944 at Sunnydale, UT, the son of Samuel and Lucille (Welch) Bilderback.

He married Debra Harsy on September 30, 2002 at Du Quoin and she survives.

He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, daughter - Leslie Anne Bilderback of Sparta, mother - Lucille Bilderback of Alva, FL, stepdaughter - Amy Wright of Du Quoin, stepson - Austin Lee of Du Quoin, sister - Barbara Hodges and husband Edmond of Marissa, one step granddaughter - Chacy Sizemore.

He was preceded in death by his father, one brother - Samuel Bilderback and one infant sister - Patsy Bilderback.

Memorial services were at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, October 5, 2002 at First Baptist Church in Du Quoin with Rev. Ted Clark officiating.

Searby Funeral Home of Du Quoin was in charge of arrangements.

Friends may make memorials to Old Du Quoin Baptist Church.

Emma Elizabeth Beetley
Emma Elizabeth Beetley, age 88, of Swanwick, died in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital on Sunday, October 20, 2002 at 1:50 p.m.

Emma was born on April 19, 1914 in Mapleton, Ill., the daughter of Frank and Pauline (Clemack) Kocian. She married Edward Beetley on December 22, 1933 in Pinckneyville and he preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of the Swanwick area. Emma attended the Potter House Christian Center in Sparta.

Survivors include two sons, Albert Frank Beetley and wife Lori of Baldwin and Ivan Beetley and wife Janet of Pinckneyville; two daughters, Clarabel Woodside of Pinckneyville and Lila Florkowski and husband Richard of Port Saint Lucie, Fla.; two sisters, Marie M. Frakes of Galesburg and Pauline Cometto and husband Joe of Coulterville; a sister-in-law, Viola Kocian of Swanwick; 21 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and three brothers, Edmund, Paul and Joe Kocian.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 23 at 1:30 p.m. in the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville with Pastor Chuck Haynes officiating. Interment was in the Swanwick Bethel cemetery.

Visitation was held at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Tuesday, October 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 8 a.m. until services.

Memorial donations may be given to the Pinckneyville Healthcare Center.

Betty Jean Strong House
Betty Jean Strong House, beloved wife of Wiley Jackson House, died on September 9, 2002 in La Jolla, California. Betty was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. (Emma) Strong Sr., of DuQuoin, and the granddaughter of Edward A. Wells and Suda Chiles Wells of Murphysboro.

She grew up in DuQuoin, having graduated from DuQuoin Township High School, where she met her husband of 55 years, 'Jack' House.

She graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech in 1946. She was as member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and a lifelong member of the American Association of University Women.

During her college years and following, she was a radio news writer for WJPF Radio Station in Herrin. After her marriage in 1947, she taught grade school in Okawville.

As her family grew and employment opportunities arose, she and Jack moved to Memphis, Tenn. then Dallas, Tex. and settled in Southern California. For the past 13 years, she and Jack have been residing in Bermuda Dunes, a small community outside of Palm Desert, Calif.

Throughout her life, she devoted inestimable energy and love to family and friends.

Betty was an inspiration to her husband, brother, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends because of her thoughtfulness, caring, creativity and extraordinary enthusiasm for life.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. (Joe Ann) Strong Jr., of DuQuoin; her three children, Suda Kay House Lazzara, Judge Mary Thornton House and Christy Carol House Marentay; sons-in-law, Thomas Lazzara, James Thornton and John Marentay; grandchildren, Emma Victoria Lazzara, Calamity Jaye Marentay, Sarah Elizabeth Thornton and Kyle Richard Thornton; nieces and nephews, Janet McCurdy, Harry E. Strong III, Cindy Heape, Patricia Aue, Joseph Strong, Ann Paxton and Susie Johnson.

A celebration of her life was held on October 13, 2002 at Francine's Bead and Breakfast in DuQuoin from 2 - 5 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Betty House Fund, Scripps Foundation for Medicine and Research, P.O. Box 2669, La Jolla, California 92038-2669.

Rev. Harold Lee Swope
Rev. Harold Lee Swope, 83, of Marion, passed away at 5:05 PM, Tuesday, August 13, 2002 at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin.

He was born October 23, 1918 in Martinsville, Illinois, the son of Lester and Margaret (Wheeler) Swope. He was united in marriage to Irma A. Cramer on May 31, 1942 and together they shared a great romance of over 60 years.

Lee earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois, a M.S. degree in Psychology from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois and a Master of Divinity degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.

He served as a Combat Army Chaplain during World War II in the European Theater of Operations.

He served as the director of evangelism for the Illinois Baptist State Association (IBSA) from 1960-1966and was director of student work for the IBSA from 1966-1968.

Rev. Swope served as a member of the executive board for the IBSA and was also chairman of the Church Development Division. Rev. Swope was also a member of the board of directors of the Baptist Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). Rev. Swope also served on the Committee on Committees for the SBC and served as a Senior Adult Consultant for them as well.

Rev. Swope had several pastorates in Illinois and Kentucky including the First Baptist Church of Pinckneyville, the First Baptist Church of Marion, Matthews Baptist Church, Old DuQuoin Baptist, Kell Baptist and Olive Branch Baptist Church.

After his official retirement in 1983, he maintained a counseling service for several years and served 18 churches as interim pastor. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Marion. In May 2001, his home church, Mount Olive Baptist Church celebrated the 60th anniversary of his ordination as a minister.

Lee also served for 20 years in two different school systems as an educator, 10 years as a guidance counselor. In November 2001, he was honored by Hutsonville High School as Alumni of the Year for 2001.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Kenneth and Morris.

He is survived by his wife, Irma Swope of Marion; son, Richard Swope of Milwaukee, WI; daughter, Diana Rogers and husband Roy of Paris, IL; two sisters, Velda Mills and husband David of Effingham and Lois June Graham of Lafayette, IN; brother, Joe Swope and wife Nancy of Paris, IL; five grandchildren, Cory Rogers and wife Ronee of Carterville, Holly Lawson and husband Alex of Chrisman, IL, Angela Downs and husband Michael of Paris, IL, Christine Sorce of Milwaukee, WI, and Lisa Verhagen of Antigo, WI; and seven great-grand children, Justin, Dillon and Nathan Lawson of Chrisman, IL; MiKayla, McKenzie and Mason Downs of Paris, IL and Jordan Verhagen of Antigo, WI.

Funeral services for Rev.Harold Lee Swope were held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 17, 2002 at the Olive Branch Church in Annapolis, Illinois with Reverend Don Mayberry and Reverend Milton Bost officiating. Burial was in the Olive Branch Church cemetery.

Visitation was held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Thursday, August 15, 2002 at the Blue Funeral Home, Marion. Visitation was also held from 5:00PM until 8:00PM, Friday, August 16, 2002 at the Hosch Funeral Home in West Union, Illinois, then with a visitation time from 9:30AM until 10:30AM, Saturday, August 17, 2002 at the Hosch Funeral Home.
