Nellie M. Tow
Nellie M. Tow, 96, of Vergennes, passed away at 9:42 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, 2003 at Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County.
Mrs. Tow was born April 4, 1906 in Vergennes, the daughter of Sterling and Mary (Stokes) Porter. She married John Ewing Tow on October 1, 1924 in De Soto and he preceded her in death on June 13, 1977.
Mrs. Tow was a member of Vergennes Senior Citizens and WMS at Wesley United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Florence and husband Frank Polifka of Hurst; sister, Elouise Glaspy of Sparta; two granddaughters, Cheryl and husband Dean Horn of Dowell and Pam and husband John Wisely of Vergennes; four grandsons, Kevin and wife Brenda Schimpf of Murphysboro, Curt and wife Tina Tow of Vergennes, Danny and wife Sherry Tow of Vergennes and Chris and wife Lori Tow of Vergennes; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Tow of Vergennes; 17 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Charles Tow on August 24, 1997; one brother and three sisters.
Funeral services were Thursday, March 13 at 11 a.m. at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro with Rev. Robin R. Lyons officiating. Interment was in Murdale Gardens of Memory in Murphysboro.
Friends called at Crawshaw Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church or Parrish Cemetery, both in Vergennes.

Alvina R. Baumann
Alvina R. Baumann, age 77, of Pinckneyville, died Saturday, April 5, 2003 at 4:35 a.m. in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital Skilled Care Unit.
Alvina was born in Swanwick on July 3, 1925, a daughter of Jacob John and Kathern (Vogel) Schwarz. She married Frank H. Baumann on October 27, 1951 and he preceded her in death on April 27, 1981.
She was a homemaker, quilter, gardener, member of Gold Plate and a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Pinckneyville.
Survivors include six children: Helen O'Dell of Pinckneyville, Mary Baumann of Pinckneyville, Mabel Stromeyer and husband, Alan, of Percy, Betty Cacioppo and husband, Carl, of Pinckneyville, Susan Place and husband, Ron, of Trenton and son, John of Pinckneyville; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her parents, husband, an infant daughter, five brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 7 at 2 p.m. in St. Paul United Church of Christ with Reverend Howard Self officiating. Interment was in Mueller Hill Cemetery, Pinckneyville.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Sunday from 6 until 9 p.m. and on Monday from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and then at the church from 1 p.m. until services.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Church of Christ or the Gold Plate Program.

Betty June Brown
Betty June Brown, 77, of Du Quoin, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2003 at 4:15 p.m. in Marshall Browning Hospital.
Mrs. Brown was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
She was born November 29, 1925 in Du Quoin, the daughter of Harvey and Lettie (Moye) Ford. She married William Brown in June 1964 at Sonora, Calif. and he preceded her in death in 1982.
Surviving are one daughter, Sharon Gail Lehman of Elgin; two brothers, Jim Ford and George Ford, three grandchildren, Stephan, Michael and Kelly Lehman and two great-grandsons, Ben and Adam Lehman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and one sister, Cleo Hamilton.
Ms. Brown's wishes were to be cremated. The Neal-McClure Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Cynthia Ann Burdel
Cynthia Ann Burdel, 49, of Du Quoin, passed away at 1:29 P.M., Friday, April 4, 2003 at Franklin Hospital in Benton, IL.
Cynthia was a homemaker. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
She was born July 27, 1953 at Du Quoin, IL, the daughter of Louis and Regina R. (Szczepanski) Burdel.
She is survived by two sisters - Jeannie Davison of Du Quoin and Martha Burnett of Troy, IL, four brothers - Richard Burdel, Eugene Burdel, Thomas Burdel, and Bernard Burdel, all of Du Quoin, several nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating.
Friends called from 9 to 10:30 A.M., Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Rosary was prayed at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday at the funeral home.
Interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Du Quoin.
Friends may make memorials to the Sacred Heart School.

Jackson Burgess
Jackson Burgess, age 89, of Pinckneyville, formerly of St. Louis, Mo. and Fort Knox, Ky., passed away Thursday morning, April 10, 2003 at the Pinckneyville Community Hospital.
Jackson was born in St. Louis, Mo. September 18, 1913, the son of Paris and Elizabeth (Williams) Burgess. He was united in marriage to Frieda Harmon February 27, 1945 and she preceded him in death on May 18, 1991. He was then united in marriage to Florence (Sally) Bader on November 6, 1992 in Waterloo and she survives. Jackson was a veteran of WW II in the Army Air Corps, a member of the American Legion and VFW, a member of the Masonic Lodge in Decatur and a 40-year member of the Asnar Shrine. Jackson resided in Decatur from 1945 until 1988 then moved to Pinckneyville. He worked as a jeweler for Jaccards Jewelry Store and the Post and Sons in Decatur.
Jackson is survived by his wife, Florence (Sally) of Pinckneyville and two foster grandchildren, Danielle and David Dodge of St. Louis, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Frieda; brother, Patrick Burgess; two sisters, Faye and Eve, and a foster son, Craig Dodge.
Funeral services were Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m. at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville with Rev. Rob Mathis officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill Cemetery, Pinckneyville.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home on Saturday from 12 p.m. until time of services.
Memorials may be made to the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Pinckneyville.
Military graveside rites were performed by the Presswood-Daffron American Legion Post #2504 of Pinckneyville.

Louise Cook
Louise Cook, 82, of Du Quoin, passed away at 7:50 P.M., Monday, April 7, 2003 at Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.
Louise was a nurse for thirty years and had worked at Marshall Browning Hospital, Pinckneyville Hospital, and Chester Mernard Mental Health. She had also worked at the Du Quoin State Fair Emergency Room for sixteen years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Du Quoin and Euzelian Sunday School Class.
She was born April 7, 1921 at Du Quoin, IL, the daughter of William and Tressie (Manion) Johnson.
She married Ralph E. Cook on December 11, 1987 at West Frankfort, IL and he survives.
She is survived by her husband of Du Quoin, three daughters - Eloise Coffel of Du Quoin, Donna Brocaille of Tamaroa and Connie Martin of Albuquerque, New Mexico, one step daughter - Sharon Cook of Illiopolis, Illinois, two brothers - Earl Dean Johnson and William Robert Johnson, both of Florida, ten grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one son and one step son.
Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Friday, April 11, 2003 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Old Du Quoin Cemetery at Du Quoin.
Friends may make memorials to St. Jude's Hospital.
