Eugene Alfred Rodely
Gene Rodely, 79, of Du Quoin passed away at 1:45 P.M., Sunday, April 20, 2003 at Fair View Nursing Center in Du Quoin after a valiant and determined fight for fifteen years against Parkinsons Disease and its complications.
Eugene "Gene" Rodely was born in the Paradise Prairie region of Perry County, IL on August 26, 1923 to his parents, George A. Rodely and Clara Marie Koenig Rodely.
He married Patricia (Patsy) Ellen Alvis on July 25, 1943 at St. Genevieve, Missouri and she passed away December 2, 1998.
Surviving children include: Eugene P. Rodely and wife Wanda of Du Quoin, Roger A. Rodely and wife Melissa of West Frankfort, IL, Jo Ellen Rodely of Du Quoin, Jack L. Rodely and wife Andrea of Dallas, TX, and David A. Rodely and wife Sharon of Jonesboro, AR, granddaughters - Stacey Davis, Crisey Fenton, Chasity Cruz, Dia Rodely, Macey Rodely, grandsons - Eugene III, Joshua, Daniel, and Lars Rodely and four great grandchildren, his Mother-in-law - Charity Alvis of Du Quoin, one brother - George Rodely of Du Quoin, and one sister - Freda Robinson of Ottowa, IL.
He was preceded in death by his wife, both parents, one son and one daughter in infancy, and his brother - William Rodely.
Gene Rodely Sr. owned, operated and was manager of Rodely's Farm Equipment Inc. in Du Quoin from 1942 to 1997, until the business was closed by auction. He was an active farmer most of his life. Rodely was elected to the seat of Perry County Commissioner for four consecutive terms 1980-1996 (the longest to date). He very much enjoyed being involved in politics, knowing and helping the people in Southern Illinois. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Du Quoin, IL.
Throughout his life, Gene was asked to give input on community programs and issues. He was involved with the U of I Extension Service, served with the Soil and Water Conservation District, was seated on the Perry County Health Board for fourteen years, served on the Greater Egypt Planning Commission of which he was the chairman two years. Gene also traveled with colleagues from this commission to Washington DC to lobby for this group. He was also on the Advisory Board for John A. Logan Agricultural Department in past years. He recalled fondly that being a Khourey League coach and an active member of the DHS Booster Club were some of his most enjoyed and treasured times.
Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, April 23, 2003 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Bro. Percy Pavloff officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.
Friends may make memorials to DHS Booster Club.

Wilhelmina Roznowski
Wilhelmina "Minnie" Roznowski, 92, of Du Quoin, passed away at 1:40 A.M., Friday, April 4, 2003 at Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.
Wilhelmina was a retired seamstress. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin and Catholic Daughters.
She was born April 16, 1910 at Cudgetown, IL, the daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth (Seibert) Harsy.
She married Norbert C. "Mike" Roznowski on June 1, 1946 at Hot Springs, AR and he survives.
She is survived by her husband of Du Quoin, nieces and nephews - Harold Pundsack, Bill Poiter, Ronald Harsy, Bob Harsy, Steve Harsy, Brenda Jones, Charlene Bigham, and Jerry Reidelberger and many great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters - Anna Pundsack, Tillie Poiter, Elizabeth Wafford, and Louise Reidelberger, one brother - Julius Harsy, and two nieces - Pauline McCollum and Evelyn Rowland.
Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Monday, April 7, 2003 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin with Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating.
Friends called from 9 to 10:30 A.M., Monday at Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Rosary was prayed at 10:30 A.M., Monday at the funeral home.
Interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Du Quoin.

Loren K. Short
Loren K. Short, 84, of Du Quoin, passed away at 10:10 P.M., Saturday, April 19, 2003 at the Fair View Nursing Center in Du Quoin.
Loren was a retired coal miner and had last worked as a driller and truck driver for Consol #1 Mine. He was a Paratrooper in the U.S. Army and a veteran of W.W. II. He was a member of American Legion and UMW of A. He was an avid gardener. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was born December 8, 1918 in Perry County, IL, the son of George W. and Georgia (Miller) Short.
He married Grace Hackleman Beckham on August 16, 1988 at Paducah, KY and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, two step daughters - Joan Kuhnert of Pinckneyville and Peggy Lux of Kirkland, WA, two sisters - Lois Hirsch of Du Quoin and Gladys Stanley of Tamaroa, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother - Lester Short.
Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Monday at the Searby Funeral Home.
Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.
Friends may make memorials to the Nine Mile Cemetery Association.

Harry E. Strong
Harry E. "Corky" Strong, Jr., 74, of Du Quoin, passed away at 5:45 P.M., Saturday, April 5, 2003 at the Pinckneyville Community Hospital in Pinckneyville.
Corky was the retired owner of Cater-Vend in Du Quoin. Before that, he was a manager with the Midwest Dairy from 1950 to 1966. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Du Quoin, the Du Quoin Elks and American Legion. He was a U.S. Air Force First Lieutenant veteran.
He was born June 25, 1928 at Murphysboro, Illinois, the son of Harry E. and Emma (Wells) Strong, Sr.
He married Joe Ann Borgsmiller on June 17, 1950 at Murphysboro, Illinois and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, daughter-Janet McCurdy and husband Charles of Du Quoin, son-Harry Strong, III and wife Sylvia of Dove Canyon, California, daughter-Cynthia Heape and husband John of Tamaroa, Illinois, daughter-Patricia Aue and husband Shawn of Du Quoin, son-Joseph Strong and wife Candace of Cambria, Illinois, daughter-Ann Paxton and husband Lindon of Du Quoin, daughter-Susan Johnson and husband Kenneth of Newton, Illinois, grandchildren-Heather McCurdy, Sarah Strong, Sloane Strong, Kendra Otto, Kara Otto, Ryan (Nicole) Heape, Seth Heape, Kirsten Aue, Codey Strong, Corey Strong, Blake Paxton, Kyle Paxton, Meredith Johnson, Olivia Johnson, and great-grandchildren-Braden Heape, Joshua Heape, Colin Williams and Antonio Graciani. He is also survived by three nieces - Suda Lazzara of La Mesa, California, Mimi Thornton House, and Christy Marentay of Pasadena, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister and brother-in-law - Betty Jean and Wiley Jackson House.
Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, April 10, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church in Du Quoin with Rev. Carl Mesiti and Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin. Friends may call from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church.
Interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Du Quoin.
Military gravesite rites were conducted by the Du Quoin American Legion Post.
Friends may make memorials to the Du Quoin Band Boosters Association, the Speech and Drama Department of the Du Quoin High School, or the Du Quoin Youth Club.

Betty Weatherford
Betty Weatherford, age 76, of Pinckneyville, died Monday, April 28, 2003 at 6:45 a.m. in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital Skilled Care Unit.
Betty was born April 19, 1927 in Cypress, the daughter of Charles and Cassie (Satterfield) Smith. She was united in marriage to Mick Weatherford October 23, 1950 in Pinckneyville and he survives. Betty worked as a seamstress at the Pinckneyville Garment Factory and was a member of the ILGWU. She attended Roe's Dale Baptist Church in Pinckneyville and was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Pinckneyville.
Betty is survived by her husband Mick Weatherford of Pinckneyville; one daughter, Mickey Sue Peveler and her husband Benny of Pinckneyville; one brother, Howard Smith and wife Virginia of Pinckneyville; one sister, Wilma Gulley of Pinckneyville and one grandson, Ben Peveler. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 30 at 10 a.m. in the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, with Rev. Charles Smith officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill Cemetery, Pinckneyville.
Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 8 a.m. until services.
Memorials may be made to Pinckneyville Health Care or the Pinckneyville Hospital Skilled Care Unit.

Dee Whitson
Dee Whitson, formerly of Du Quoin, passed away in the Loma Linda, California Veteran's Hospital on March 23, 2003. Dee was a 26-year retired veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. A full 21-gun salute military ceremony was held by U.S. Marines (from 29 Palms) at the Riverside, California National Cemetery on March 31.
Dee served in World War II, the Korean Conflict, Vietnam, Guantanamo Bay, the Lebanon Crisis, Libyan Affair and other situations as a member of the U.S.. Marines Air Wing.
Dee was the son of Lennie Whitson and Estle 'Red' Whitson of Du Quoin, now deceased. Dee was survived by his wife, Evelyn, several children, plus numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Bob Whitson, formerly of Du Quoin, an Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict and still a member of the Du Quoin American Legion and Du Quoin Elks Club.
