John Everett Murray
John Everett Murray, 57, of Elkville, died Thursday, September 6, 2001 at 10:39 a.m. in an automobile accident on Route 51, one mile south of Elkville.

Mr. Murray was born March 3, 1944 in Murphsyboro, the son of Everett E. and Lela I. (Daily) Murray. He married Mary Clover on August 14, 1964 and she survives.

He worked at BICC General in DuQuoin. He was of the Pentecostal faith.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Murray of Elkville; sons, John and wife Donna Murray of Bloomsdale, Mo. and Jim and wife Tyone Murray of Elkville; daughters, Linda and husband Terry Young of Glenview and Lisa and husband Bill Paquette of Virginia Beach, Va.; sister, Brenda S. Cantrell of Murphysboro; brothers, Bill R. Murray of Herrin, Fred Murray of DuQuoin, Jack L. Murray of Princeton, Kenneth L. Murray and Richard D. Murray, both of Murphysboro; two uncles, John Murray of Peoria and Kenneth Murray of St. Petersburg, Fla and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Linda, Betty and Judy and one brother, Ed.

Funeral services were Monday, September 10 at 11 a.m. at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro with Pastor David W. Pinkerton officiating. Interment was in Hallidayboro cemetery at Elkville.

Friends called Sunday, September 9 at Crawshaw Funeral Home from 6 until 8 p.m. and again on Monday from 8 until 11 a.m.

Memorials may be made to the Heart Association or the donor's choice.

Lyle Downen Jr.
Lyle Downen Jr., 77, of Tamaroa, passed away at 1:49 p.m. Friday, September 7, 2001 at Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.

Lyle had worked as a section hand for the I.C. Railroad and for Duncan & Frey Furniture in DuQuoin. He retired from Pierce & Sons Auto Sales as a mechanic.

He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Tamaroa, and Tamaroa American Legion Post 1277. He had also been a member of the Tamaroa Volunteer Fire Department and had served on the Tamaroa Village Board. Lyle was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II.

He was born March 3, 1924 at Scheller, the son of Lyle L. and Esther E. (Klingler) Downen. He married Lillian M. Woodside on June 6, 1948 at Tamaroa and she survives.

He is survived by his wife of Tamaroa; son, Lyle A. Downen and wife Mary of Pinckneyville; daughter, Verna Jean Hill and husband Brian of Tamaroa; sister, Mildred Dublo and husband Tony of Brighton, Ill.; six grandchildren, Beth and Tom Bruce, John and Lisa Hill, Barb and Danny Taylor, Mary Lynn and Keith Hubler, Rob Downen, Todd Downen; eight great-grandchildren, Zane Bruce, Kendra Taylor, Brian Taylor, Lindsey Taylor, Britteny Hughes, Casey Galbraith, Jared Galbraith and Morgan Galbraith.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John W. Downen and Kenneth L. Downen and one sister, Anna Mae Davis.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, September 10 at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa with Rev. Rich McCall and Rev. Dwight Dame officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa.

Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park in DuQuoin. Military graveside rites were conducted

Elsie Mae Feltmeyer
Elsie Mae Feltmeyer, 93, of Tamaroa, passed away at 9:45 a.m. Monday, September 3, 2001 at the Sparta Community Hospital.

Elsie was a homemaker and had assisted her husband several years in the operation of their service station in Tamaroa. She was a member of the Tamaroa Christian Church and a 56-year member of the Eastern Star.

She was born February 28, 1908 at DuQuoin, the daughter of Major and Louisa Stockton. She married William Nelson Feltmeyer and he passed away November 13, 1957.

She is survived by two grandchildren, Charles Michael Marlow and wife Belinda of Tamaroa, Nancy Jo Glander and husband Gary of Tamaroa; two great-grandchildren, Michelle Nicole Marlow and Jason Michael Marlow; one sister, Florence Mounce of Apple Valley, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter and son-in-law, Betty Jane and Charles William Marlow; two brothers, Paul and Fred Stockton; one sister, Mable Edie; one infant brother and one infant sister.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Friday, September 7 at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa with Rev. Keith Filer officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa.

Interment was in the Tamaroa cemetery.

Friends may make memorials to the Alzheimers Association.

Jordan Gajewski
Mr. Jordan "Jody" Gajewski of Rural Ashley, Ill departed this life at the scene of a one car accident in rural Washington County on Sunday morning, September 30, 2001. He had attained the age of 19 years, 11 months, and 14 days.

Jordan was born at Pinckneyville, Ill on October 16, 1981 the fourth son of Fred and Marsha (Nowakowski) Gajewski and they survive his passing.

Jody was a member of the 1999 Graduating Class of Nashville Community High School where he was a three-sport letter winner in baseball, football, and basketball from 1997-1999. He was fortunate to be an active player in each sport and help each of the teams reach state level competition. He was a member of the National Honor Society at Nashville Community High School.

At the time of his passing, Jody was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church of Nashville and was a Junior at Southeast Missouri University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, majoring in business. He was a member of Southeast Missouri Indian Baseball Team. He was a catcher/first baseman.

Jody was a fun-loving young man with a warm smile and an eagerness to help and he especially liked spending time with young children. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

Left to mourn his passing are his parents, Fred and Marsha Gajewski of rural Ashley, four brothers, Mick at home, Matt and wife Christie of rural Ashley, Andy and Jason at home; maternal grandmother, Bernice Nowakowski of Tamaroa; paternal grandmother, Regina Gajewski of rural Ashley; his godparents, Michael and Rosalea Prusacki of rural Du Quoin; two uncles, Robert Nowakowski of Tamaroa and Edwin Gajewski of Scheller; many great-aunts and uncles, cousins, other relation, numerous friends, and his special friend, Angie Harre of Nashville.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Walter Gajewski and maternal grandfather Thomas Nowakowski.

Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Michael Catholic Church at Radom, Ill on Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at 10 a.m. with Father Paul Wienhoff officiating with interment in the St. Michael cemetery at Radom.

Friends called at the Auditorium of Nashville Community High School, Tuesday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday at the Campagna Funeral Home of Nashville from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. The rosary was said at the funeral home Wednesday at 8:45 a.m.

Should friends desire, Mass offerings or memorial contributions to the Nashville Community High School Athletic Fund or St. Ann Catholic Church Renovation fund may be made.

Louis Kehoe II
Mr. Louis "Larry' Kehoe II, 59, of Sparta, passed away as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Pinckneyville on Route 154 on Thursday, August 23, 2001 at 7:18 a.m.

Mt. Kehoe was born in St. Louis, Mo. on March 15, 1942, the son of Louis C. and Lorraine (Graf) Kehoe. Larry served eight years in the United States Navy from 1960 until 1968. In 1970, he was employed by the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier, working out of the Nashville Post Office. he retired in 1997. he was currently working at the General Henry Biscuit Co. at DuQuoin and also as a part-time cook at 'Sporto's' in Red Bud, Ill.

Mr. Kehoe was of the Catholic faith. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, with 22 years of sobriety.

Left to mourn his passing are a son, Lawrence J. Kehoe and a daughter, Melodie Taylor and husband Donald, all of Sparta; a grandson, Dale Nerone of Sparta; his step-mother, kathryn Kehoe of Carlinville; a sister, Nola Haynes and husband Raymond of Nashville; four step-sisters, Phyllis Bury of St. Louis, Mo., Nancy Bramley and Cindy Schnor, both of Centralia and Charmaine McKinney and husband Greg of Carlinville; nieces; nephews; other relations and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Linda Rogers and a step-sister, Linda Focht.

Funeral services were held at the Campagna Funeral Home of Nashville on Saturday, August 25 at 1 p.m. with Fr. Paul Weinhoff officiating. In keeping with the wishes of Mr. Kehoe, his remains were cremated after the funeral services.

Friends alled at the Campagna Funeral Home of Nasvhille on Saturday from 11 a.m. until time of services.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Emily Rae Pfau
Emily Rae Pfau, age 17, of 503 Mill Street in Pinckneyville, IL died Friday evening, September 28, 2001 as a result of an automobile accident in Pinckneyville earlier in the evening.

Emily was born February 21, 1984 in Du Quoin, Ill., the daughter of Larry J. and Glenna Rae (Kennedy) Pfau. Emily was a senior at the Pinckneyville Community High School, a lifelong resident of Pinckneyville and a member of the First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville. Emily was also a member of the PCHS Lifesavers, National Honor Society, Spanish Club, scholar bowl team, drum major in the PCHS band, was a member of the pit band for the high school musicals, gave flute lessons and tutored other students. She was the student council president at PCHS, was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Campus Missionary at PCHS, youth group member of the First Baptist Church, a frequent blood donor and loved reading.

Emily is survived by her parents, Larry and Glenna Pfau, and two brothers, Brian J. and Ruben J. Pfau all of Pinckneyville, IL. grandparents Jesse and Violet Kennedy of Du Quoin, IL. and William and Ellen Pfau of Sioux Falls, SD.; aunts and uncles Janis and Johnny Jokisch of Olney, IL., Marla Mitchell of Du Quoin, IL, Dianna and Larry Sims of Du Quoin, IL., David Kennedy of Du Quoin, IL., Karen and Jim Keller of Vermont, Ron and Linda Pfau of Lenzburg, IL., Jim and Cherry Pfau of Tampa, FL. Judy and Lynn Olsen of Sioux Falls, SD and numerous cousins.

Funeral services were Tuesday, October 2, 2001 at the First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville, IL. at 11 a.m. with Rev. James Bush and Reb. Alan Pittman officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery in Pinckneyville, IL.

Friends called at the First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville, IL. Monday evening from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. and again on Tuesday morning from 8 a.m. until services.

Memorials may be made to the PCHS Lifesavers and to the Ronald Mc Donald House.

Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral in Pinckneyville, IL was in charge of arrangements.

George Washington Dowell Jr.
George Washington Dowell Jr., 89, of Jackson, Mississippi, formerly of DuQuoin, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2001 in Mobile, Alabama at the home of his son David Dowell and his daughter-in-law Mary Evelyn Dowell.

Mr. Dowell was a former regional sales manager for Dawes Laboratories. He was a Mason and a Lifetime Member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, B.P.O. Elks and Phi Delta Theta.

He was born August 3, 1912 at DuQuoin, the son of the late Judge George W. and Anna (Midgett) Dowell. He was married for over 63 years to the late Hazel Wolfe Dowell. They were married June 28, 1936 at DuQuoin. She passed away February 25, 2000.

He was a resident of Jackson, Miss. and Chassahowitzka, Fla. for over 40 years.

Mr. Dowell is survived by two sons, George W. Dowell III of Alexandria, Va. and David J. Dowell of Mobile, Ala.; two sisters, Anna Lee Barton of Pittsburg, Penn. and Theo Sandaker of Cincinnati, Ohio; two granddaughters, Genevieve Dowell Madigan of West Falls, New York and Elizabeth Ann Boyes of Richmond, Va.; a grandson, George W. Dowell IV of Santa Clara, Calif.; a great-granddaughter, Cassidy Ann Boyes of Richmond, Va. and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Monday, August 20 at the IOOF cemetery in DuQuoin with Rev. Chester Zimmer officiating.

Friends called from 10 a.m.until time of service Monday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.

Interment was in the IOOF cemetery, DuQuoin.

Golda Hale
Golda Hale, 97, of DuQuoin, passed away Sunday, September 9, 2001 at 6:40 p.m. at The Abby of Carbondale.

Mrs. Hale was an accomplished seamstress at Cooks, Cleaners & Prosperity Cleaners in Carbondale. She was a member of Gospel Assembly Church.

She was born March 22, 1904 in Wayne City, Ill., the daughter of Nathan and Martha (Shafer) Musgrave. She married Charles William Hale in Lane County, Ill. in 1918 and he preceded her in death in 1934.

Surviving are one daughter, Maxine Lindstrom of Bridgview, Ill.; 10 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, William and Dean; one daughter, Lucille Cox; three grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Dennis Fitzsimmons and Rev. Susan Cox-Johnson officiating. Interment was in Oakland cemetery in Carbondale.

Friends called Tuesday, September 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Neal-McClure Funeral Home and from 7:30 a.m. until time of service on Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to Gospel Assembly Church.

Otella Pleasant
Otella Pleasant, 85, DuQuoin, passed away Sunday, September 30, 2001 at 5:09 p.m. at Marshall Browning Hospital.

Ms. Pleasant had been employed by Higgins Jewelry. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church in DuQuoin.

She was born March 11, 1916 at DuQuoin, the daughter of Frank and Matilda (Mitchell) Pleasant.

Surviving are one sister, Golda Miller of Ingelwood, Calif. and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services were Saturday, October 6 at 1 p.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Leon Kelly officiating. Interment was in IOOF cemetery at DuQuoin.

Friends called at Neal-McClure Funeral Home Saturday, October 6 from 11 a.m. until time of service.

Charles A. Lowery
Charles A. Lowery, 70, of Morganfield, Kentucky, formerly of Golconda, passed away Wednesday afternoon, August 22, 2001 in Morganfield.

Mr. Lowery was born August 30, 1930. He graduated from Golconda Community High School and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Golconda. He served as President of the Lions' Club in Morganfield, was a member of the VFW and was commissioned as an Honorable Kentucky Colonel.

He served four years and three months as an air policeman in the United States Air Force. He served as Golconda's City Marshall and was security supervisor for Caterpillar Co. in Joliet. He worked for the Earl C. Clemens Job Corps Center in Breckenridge, Ky. for a number of years before his retirement.

Survivors include three daughters, Annette Tapp of Sturgis, Ky., Gail Lowery of Lexington, Ky. and Crystal Robison of Morganfield; three grandchildren, Kristen and Cierra Robison of Morganfield and Daniel Tapp of Sturgis; a brother, James Lowery of Golconda; a sister and brother-in-law, Grethel and Bandy Warren of Golconda and a sister, Sarah Doerner of DuQuoin.

Other survivors include two nieces, Marie Warren of Golconda and Emma O'Brien of Harrisburg; a nephew, Carlton Doerner of DuQuoin and a grandnephew and his wife, Shawn and Jennifer O'Brien of Powder Springs, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; a brother-in-law, Carroll Doerner and a nephew-in-law, Richard O'Brien.

Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 25 at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield, Ky. Burial with military honors was in the Peters Creek cemetery near Elizabethtown, Ill. Visitation was from 1 until 8 p.m. Friday, August 24. Memorials may be made to the Golconda Public Library, Golconda, IL 62938.

Charles Lee Robinson
Charles Lee Robinson, 69, of DuQuoin, passed away at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, September 11, 2001 at his residence.

Charles was a retired teacher. He taught for 30 years, beginning as a Fifth Grade Teacher and Jr. High Basketball Coach at McLeansboro. He was then supervisor of Adult Education for the Illinois Department of Education at Lincoln for 6 years. He then served as a Special Education Teacher at the Carbondale High School. Charles received his masters degree in Special Education from SIU in 1962. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served from 1952 to 1956. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of DuQuoin, Elks Lodge, American Legion, Masonic Lodge and Lions Club. He had an extreme love of the outdoors.

He was born September 4, 1932 at McLeansboro, the son of Harry Lee and Hazel (Cluck) Robinson. He married Carol Sue Taylor on August 22, 1958 at McLeansboro and she survives.

Surviving are his wife of DuQuoin; three sons, Doug Robinson and wife Nancy of Houston, Tex., Jeff Robinson and wife Rosie of DuQuoin, Brent Robinson and friend Jennie Tilley of DuQuoin; two grandsons, Cameron and Caleb Robinson; two granddaughters, Connie Beth Robinson and Afton Robinson; two sisters, Betty Hamilton of McLeansboro and Jane Mellinbine of Greenup.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Friday, September 14 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.

Interment was in the Knights Prairie cemetery at McLeansboro.

Friends may make memorials to the First Baptist Church of DuQuoin or the DuQuoin Dialysis Center.
