Velma Wright Manion
Velma Wright Manion, 87, of DuQuoin, passed away at 7:45 a.m. Monday, August 20, 2001 at the home of her daughter in DuQuoin.

Velma was a retired seamstress at Forest City Garment Co. She had also been a cook at the Maid Rite, Fair Acres Nursing Home and Fair View Nursing Center. She was a member of the Old DuQuoin Baptist Church. She was a member of the DuQuoin Community Club, Royal Neighbors, VFW Auxilliary, Perry County Gold Plate, DuQuoin Eastern Star and the Rebekah Lodge.

She was born January 17, 1914 at DuQuoin, the daughter of James R. and Lula Belle (Lemons) Coffel. She first married Milton E. Wright on April 2, 1937 at Old Jackson, Mo. and he preceded her in death on July 1, 1971. She then married Ed Manion on December 8, 1978 at DuQuoin and he preceded her in death on March 15, 1979.

She is survived by a son, Jimmie Dale Wright and wife Helen of Orion, Ill.; two daughters, Mona Holland and husband Robert of East Moline, Ill. and Millie Little and husband John of DuQuoin; seven sisters, Mable Ruth Crispin of Henderson, Ky., Etta Jane Beach of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Lona Faye Dunnigan of Tuscola, Ill., Leota Berry of Madison, Mammie Lee of Florida, Lois Bird of Front Royal, Va. and Nina Belle Woolsey of DuQuoin; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, two infants, three brothers- Jesse Coffel, Carl Coffel and Marley Turner and two sisters- Bernice Hughes and Ida Mae Kinslow.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 23 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Ted Clark officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.

Interment was in the Old DuQuoin cemetery.

Friends may make memorials to the Old DuQuoin Baptist Church.

Norma Jean Hammack
Norma Jean Hammack, age 59, of Clarksville, Tenn., died on Tuesday, August 21, 2001 at 12 p.m. at her home.

Norma Jean was born in Pinckneyville on June 18, 1942, the daughter of James E. and Lauraine (Teffertillar) Phillips. She married Lowell H. Hammack on June 20, 1959 in Pinckneyville and he survives. Norma Jean was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church in Clarksville, Tenn. and enjoyed gardening, pets, singing and crocheting.

Survivors include her husband Lowell of Clarksville, Tenn.; her mother, Lauraine Hardin of Pinckneyville; a daughter, Kelly Jean Hoagland and husband Greg of Clarksville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Kyle Wayne Roberge, Chelsea Jean Roberge, Kathleen Lauraine Hoagland and Jordan Kathleen Hoagland; one brother, Jim Phillips and wife Sandy of Pinckneyville and two sisters, Nancy Greer and husband Wayne of Pinckneyville and Darlene Kunkle and husband Arland of Pinckneyville.

Funeral services were held at the Trinity Assembly of God Church in Pinckneyville on Friday, August 24 at 11 a.m. with Brother Rob Mathis officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery in Pinckneyville.

Visitation was at the Trinity Assembly of God Church in Pinckneyville on Thursday, August 23 from 6 until 9 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. until services.

Memorials may be made to Gateway Hospice, 1760 Madison St. Clarksville, TN 37043.

Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville was in charge of arrangements.

Bill R. Milam
Bill R. Milam, 78 of 809 N. Madison St. in Benton, died at 8:55 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, 2001 at his home.

Mr. Milam was born Oct. 6, 1922 in Sullivan, Ind., the son of Charles Henry and Mary Elizabeth (Spencer) Milam. He married Betty Hiatt on Oct. 14, 1947, and she preceded him in death on July 24, 2001.

Mr. Milam was a retired coal minter. He was a 50-year member of the U.M.W.A. Local 1487, a member of the American Legion Post 280, V.F.W. Post 2671 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2898. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a daughter, Tammy Woodside and husband Thad of Du Quoin; a son, Rick Milam and wife Mary of Benton; five grandchildren, Curtis Hodge and Lucas Tyler Meadows, both of Du Quoin, and Ryan Douglas Milam, Erica June Milam and Daniel Reed Milam, all of Benton; a sister, Becky McElroy of California; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, seven brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 19, 2001 at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton with Pastor Thad Woodside officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Masonic and Odd Fellows cemetery in Benton. Visitation was from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Eugene Henderson Jr.
Eugene Henderson Jr., 24, of DuQuoin, passed away Wednesday, August 1, 2001 at 8:31 p.m. at Marshall Browning Hospital.

Mr. Henderson was born September 23, 1976 at DuQuoin, the son of Eugene Henderson Sr. and Birdie (Simmons) Robison.

He is survived by his mother, Birdie Robison of DuQuoin; father, Eugene Henderson Sr. of DuQuoin; brother, Jimmy Robison of Marion; five sisters, Leola Needham of DuQuoin, Lisa Robison of DuQuoin, Susan Robison of Memphis, Tenn., Beverly Cain of DuQuoin and Ronica Henderson, O'Fallon, Mo. and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his nephew, Sanchez Robison.

Funeral services were Monday, August 6 at 1 p.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel in DuQuoin with Rev. Robert Simmons officiating. Interment was in the IOOF cemetery at DuQuoin.

Friends called at Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Monday from 11 a.m. until time of service.

Zelma Bookstaver
Zelma Bookstaver, 92, of DuQuoin, passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at Fair Acres Nursing Home in DuQuoin.

Mrs. Bookstaver was a retired payroll clerk at Decca Records. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

She was born March 9, 1909 at DuQuoin, the daughter of C.O. Wellington and Anna Wilson. She married Howard V. Bookstaver on November 19, 1927 in DuQuoin and he preceded her in death on July 17, 1977.

Surviving are one son, Charles Bookstaver of DuQuoin; grandchildren, Norman (Carole) Hill of DuQuoin, Cha (Debbie) HIll of DuQuoin, Lisa (Brian) Craze of Phoenix, Ariz. and Heidi Bookstaver of Boise, Idaho; great grandchildren, Trent, Adam and Aaron Hill, Andrew Hannah and Elizabeth Craze and Ashley, Nick and A.J. Hill and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, three sisters and one daughter, Dorothy Hill.

Funeral services were Friday, August 31 at Maxton Funeral Chapel at 10 a.m. with Rev. Carl S. Mesiti officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park.

Friends called after 8 a.m. Friday at Maxton Funeral Chapel.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church.

Randy E. Bochantin
Randy E. Bochantin, 58, of Tamaroa, passed away at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, August 8, 2001 at his residence.

Randy was a farm laborer. He was a member of the St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church at Todds Mill.

He was born September 25, 1942 in Perry County, the son of Andrew and Agnes (Kuberski) Bochantin.

Surviving are two brothers, Oley Bochantin of DuBois and Nick Bochantin of Ashley; two sisters, Viola Pero of Jerseyville and Clara Haynes of Waltonville and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 11 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Todds Mill with Fr. James Van Oss officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa.

A Vigil Service was held at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Interment was in the St. Mary Magdalen cemetery at Todds Mill.

William T. Hutson Jr.
William T. Hutson Jr., 46, of Riverside, California, formerly of DuQuoin, passed away Sunday, August 5, 2001 at the VA Hospital in San Bernardino, California.

He was a Protestant and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a construction laborer.

He was born November 28, 1954 at DuQuoin, the son of William T. and Dorothy I. (Swallers) Hutson.

He is survived by two sons, William T. Hutson III and wife Misty and Jason L. Hutson, all of Riverside, Calif.; five sisters, Judith and Wesley Wright of Ina, Sue and Jack Carter of Sparta, Lois and elmo Kelley of West Frankfort, Barbara and Rodney Smith of Coulterville and Carol and Curtis Wright of Nicholson, Georgia; one brother, John and Donna Hutson of Maysville, Georgia; one granddaughter; 13 nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 18 at the IOOF cemetery in DuQuoin with the VA Chaplain officiating.

The Searby Funeral Home of DuQuoin was in charge of arrangements.

Those attending the services were asked to go directly to the cemetery.

James L. Adams
James L. Adams, 33, of Carbondale, passed away at 11 p.m. Thursday, November 8, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

James was a truck driver for Cox Trucking in Murphysboro. He was a member of the Sesser Church of Christ.

He was born July 18, 1968 at Fairfield, the son of Bob and Doris (Finney) Adams. He married Cynthia R. Whitecotton on July 30, 1999 at Sesser and she survives.

He is survived by his wife of Carbondale; parents- Bob and Doris Adams of Sesser; two sisters- Lisa Bartolotti of Thompsonville and Scarlett Maples and husband Barry of Huntsville, Ala.; two brothers- Capt. Robert E. Adams Jr. of Ft. Riley, Kan. and Jeremy Adams and wife LeAnn of Marion; maternal grandmother- Clorean Finney of Oblong; father- and mother-in-law- Jacob and Doris Whitecotton of DuQuoin; sister-in-law- Nell Southard and husband John of New Baden, 10 nieces and nephews and two great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Ethan Adams.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 11 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Bro. Gerald Cowan officiating.

Friends alled from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.

Interment was in Blairsville cemetery.

Friends may make memorials to the Sesser Church of Christ or the American Heart Association and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Gena Rae Halstead Ellis
Gena Rae Halstead Ellis, 37, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of DuQuoin, passed away at the Saint Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. Thursday, November 15, 2001.

Gena was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

She was born July 15, 1964 at Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Raymond H. and Ina M. (Woolsey) Halstead. She married Derek W. Ellis on April 9, 1997 at Las Vegas, Nevada and he survives.

She is survived by her husband of Memphis, Tenn.; son, Hunter Greyson Ellis of Memphis, Tenn. and her parents, Raymond and Ina Halstead of Memphis, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by an infant brother.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, November 19 at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Bro. Jerry Aken officiating.

Friends called from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin.

Interment was in the Hallidayboro cemetery.

Melvin D. Bass
Melvin D. Bass, age 77, of DuQuoin, formerly of Pinckneyville, died Saturday, November 17, 2001 at 11:25 p.m. in the Fairview Nursing Home, DuQuoin.

Melvin was born in Pinckneyville on May 11, 1924, the son of William Benjamin (Ben) and Melvina (Harnetiaux) Bass. He married Delores Williamson on June 18, 1951 in Pinckneyville and she survives.

During his lifetime, he served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, worked as a guard at Menard Correctional Center in Chester and was a forklift operator for the former Phelps Dodge in DuQuoin.

Survivors include his wife: Delores of DuQuoin; a daughter: Susan Hendriksen and husband John of Danville, Calif.; two grandchildren: Melissa Ann Hendriksen and Erik John Hendriksen, along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: LaVerne, Gerald, Andy and Benton and a sister: Winifred Boyer.

Following cremation, graveside services were held at a later date.

Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville was in charge of arrangements.

Flora Mae Laird
Flora Mae Laird, age 63, of Du Quoin, IL. went home on Sunday, November 25, 2001 at 9:30 p.m. in St. Francis Hospital, Beech Grove, IN.

Flora was born in Pinckneyville, IL. on June 28, 1938, the daughter of Earl O. and Wilma L. (Hill) Jones. She married George E. Laird on September 22, 1956 in Perry County, IL.

During her lifetime she was a member of the Concord Baptist Church, Rice, IL., worked for the Freeman No. 11 coal mine as a pan operator from 1975-1989, was a member of the United Mine Workers of America, enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and her family.

The Lord blessed her with one son: Mickal Laird, and his wife, Debbie, of Herrin, IL., and their daughter and son-in-law: Crystal and Michael Formosa of Satellite Beach, FL., two daughters: Sherry Atkins and husband, Jim, of Du Quoin, IL. and their daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter: Sacha, Jeremy and Savanah Cobin of Christopher, IL., and LaDonna Pyle and her husband, Ron, Jr. of Beech Grove, IN. and their children: Matthew, Marcus, Elizabeth and Tyler Pyle, all of Beech Grove, three sisters: Leona Laird and her husband Robert, of Pinckneyville, Freida Asbury, and her husband, Wayne of Du Quoin, and Karolyn Jones of Coulterville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister: Ethel Hicks, a brother: Earl Dean Jones and a nephew: Gary Wayne Asbury.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, November 29, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville with Rev. Wayne Stotz officiating. Interment was in the Concord cemetery in Rice, Ill.

Visitation was at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. and on Thursday, November 29 from 8 a.m. until services.

Memorials may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation or TCT Television.

Elmer L. Harris
Elmer L. Harris, 68, of DuQuoin, passed away Saturday, November 17, 2001 at 8:35 a.m. at his home.

Mr. Harris was a painter and of the Christian faith. He was a life member at the DuQuoin VFW Post 513 and a member of the DuQuoin American Legion Post 647. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He was born April 20, 1933 at Johnston City, the son of Cecil and Juanita (Roach) Harris. He married Mabel L. Green on May 5, 1956 at Iuka, Miss.

Surviving are his wife, Mabel Harris of DuQuoin; three sons, George Harris of DuQuoin; Jack Harris of DuQuoin and Kenneth Harris of DuQuoin; his mother, Juanita Harris of Sunfield; three brothers, Bill Harris of DuQuoin, Tom Harris of DuQuoin and Richard Harris of Carlton, Tex.; two sisters, Virginia Zimmerman of Sesser and Clara Miller of Mulkeytown; a sister-in-law, Jean Harris of DuQuoin; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, John.

Funeral services were Tuesday, November 20 at 1 p.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Gerald Wright officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.

Friends called Monday, November 19 from 6 until 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 7:30 a.m. until time of service.
