George B. Hobson
George B. Hobson, 74, of Belleville, passed away at 4:55 p.m. Tuesday, December 25, 2001 at Christian Hospital NE in Florissant, Mo.

Mr. Hobson was a retired Senior Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He attended the First United Presbyterian Church in Belleville. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Oklahoma and the Moose Lodge in Belleville.

He was born Monday, February 21, 1927 in North Carolina, the son of Neal A. and Martha (Anderson) Hobson. He married Joan Mrovka on June 26, 2948.

Surviving are his wife, Joan Hobson of Belleville; daughter, Linda Susan Hobson of Stockton, Calif.; son Rev. G. Thomas Hobson of Pinckneyville; sister, Ruth Douglas of Sumter, South Carolina; brother, David Purvis of Sumter, South Carolina; sister, Joyce Brown of Atlanta, Ga.; sister, Jeanette Newsome of Sumter, South Carolina and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, December 28 at First United Presbyterian Church in Belleville with Rev. Drew Kramer officiating. Interment was at Jefferson Barracks National cemetery in St. Louis, Mo.

Friends called from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Friday at First United Presbyterian Church in Belleville.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.

Herr Funeral Home of Collinsville was in charge of arrangements.

Violette M. Fisher
Violette M. Fisher, 84, of Tamaroa, passed away at 5:25 p.m Sunday, December 23, 2001 at the Skilled Care Unit of the Pinckneyville Community Hospital.

Violette was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith. She was a former member of the Tamaroa Rebekah Lodge.

She was born June 2, 1917 at Cocadelo, Montana, the daughter of Albert F. and Edith Myrtle (Bailey) Wisely. She married Loren S. Fisher on November 11, 1937 at Coulterville and he survives.

She is survived by her husband of Tamaroa; two daughters, Sandy Huggins of Tamaroa and Almeta Berris of Wisconsin; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Kermet Casey Wisely.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 27 at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa with Rev. Joseph Crowe officiating.

Friends called from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa.

Interment was in the Antioch cemetery at Tamaroa.

Florene Rosenberger
Florene Rosenberger, 91, formerly of Dowell, passed away Wednesday, December 5, 2001 at 9:45 a.m. in Fair View Nursing Center in DuQuoin.

Mrs. Rosenberger was a homemaker and of the Christian faith.

She was born December 5, 1910 in Vergennes, the daughter of Solie Beard and Minnie (Murphy) Beard. She married George Rosenberger on December 8, 1932 in Murphysboro and he preceded her in death on October 27, 1996.

Surviving are her brother, Ivan Beard of DuQuoin; sisters-in-law, Margaret Rosenberger of Vergennes and Cleophia Rheinecker of DeSoto, Mo. and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three sisters

Funeral services were Saturday, December 8 at 2 p.m. at Maxton Funeral Home in DuQuoin with Rev. Gary Bate officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park in DuQuoin.

Friends called after 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Hugh Charles Nenninger
Hugh Charles Nenninger, 84, of Glen Carbon died on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 at Alton Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Nenninger was born August 21, 1917 in Belleville to Louis and Stella (Langlitz) Nenninger. He married Agnes C. Conner and she preceded him in death. He was a World War II veteran, serving in Company C, 38th Battalion, 19th Regiment of the U.S. Army.

He was employed at SIU-Edwardsville as chief engineer of WSIE radio for 20 years, retiring in 1982. He was also employed at SWIC SIU Credit Union, Illinois State Police radio and Pan American navigator. He was a resident of the Du Quoin area during his tenure with the state police. He was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ in Collinsville.

He is survived by cousins Laverne Nenninger Anderson, Laverne Riess, Velva Rose (Langlitz) Houston, sister-in-law Grace E. (Conner) Meyer, and many dear extended family members, friends and co-workers.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Carlan Nenninger.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 15, 2001 at Valhalla Funeral Home in Belleville with Rev. David Stabenfeldt officiating. Visitation was on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Entombment committal services were held at Valhalla Gardens of Memory Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John's United Church of Christ, Collinsville.

William R. Downs
William R. Downs, 79, of Ashley, passed away at 2:22 p.m. Sunday, December 2, 2001 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Care Center in Marion.

Bill was a farmer. He was a member of the Apostolic Pentecostal Church at Tamaroa. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II.

He was born September 24, 1922 at DeSoto, the son of James and Lucy (Leek) Downs. He married Grace Crowe on May 17, 1973 and she survives.

He is survived by his wife of Ashley; kids, Richard and Kathleen haycraft of Tamaroa, Leroy Taylor of Tamaroa, Donald Taylor of chicago; grandkids, Milly Mason, Holly dixon, Tammy Harris, Richard Haycraft II, Shellse George, Lisa Livingston, Bo George, Marilyn Burgess, Carolyn Burgess and Zella Haycraft and a sister, Irene Davis of DuQuoin.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 8 at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa with Rev. Joseph Crowe officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa.

Interment was in the Tamaroa cemetery.

Military graveside rites were conducted by the DuQuoin VFW Post 513.

Dorothy Eloise Davis
Dorothy Eloise Davis, 80, of Vergennes, passed away Monday, December 24, 2001 at 4:23 a.m. at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro.

Mrs. Davis was a retired cook. During her lifetime she had cooked for the former Brown Shoe Co. in Murphysboro, St. Joseph Hospital in Murphysboro and had been a substitute cook for the Elverado School District. She was a member of the Wesleyn United Methodist Church in Vergennes for 80 years. She was also a member of the Wesleyn Women's Society and the Vergennes Senior citizens. Mrs. Davis was a long-time contributor of Vergennes news to the DuQuoin Evening Call.

She was born January 26, 1921 in Vergennes, the daughter of Robert Ishom and Alice Maude (Robinson) Parrish. She married Clifton Glenn Davis Sr. on December 21, 1941 at Jackson, Mo.

Surviving are her husband, Clifton Glenn Davis Sr. of Vergennes; son, Clifton Glenn Davis Jr. and wife Pat of DuQuoin; daughter, Delores Ogolini and husband Leo of St. Charles, Mo.; grandchildren, Kim Wheeler and husband Wendell of DuQuoin, Tim Davis and wife Marcy of DuQuoin, Kris Ogolini and wife Christie of St. Louis, Mo.; four great-grandchildren, Connor Wheeler and Macie Wheeler of DuQuoin, Jamison Davis and Aubrey Davis of DuQuoin; four brothers, Thomas V. Parrish, Ira E. Parrish, Paul W. Parrish of Carbondale and Wiley B. Parrish of Murphysboro; five sisters, Irene E. Shewmaker of Vergennes, Mary F. Ferguson of Phoenix, Ariz., Sarah I. Doerr of Murphysboro, Lula Belle Boulden of London, Kentucky and Sharon K. Maynor of Elkville and one uncle, John and wife Lennie Robinson of DuQuoin.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services were Friday, December 28 at 11 a.m. at Wesleyn United Methodist Church with Rev. Earn Renshaw and Rev. Bill Wiggs officiating. Interment was in Parrish cemetery at Vergennes.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro and from 10 a.m. Friday until the hour of services at the church.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc. or Parrish cemetery.

Opal Etherton
Opal Etherton, 81, DuQuoin, passed away Sunday, December 30, 2001 at 2:10 a.m. at Magnolia Manor in Metropolis.

Opal worked in the clothing factory, was manager of the Elks Country Club and worked as a coal miner at Consol #5. She was a member of First Christian Church and the UMWA.

She was born January 19, 1920 at Elkville, the daughter of Mark and Hattie (Russell) Ford. She married Hubert Etherton in 1949 in Mississippi and he preceded her in death in 1972.

Surviving are two sons, Mike Wilson and wife Bonnie of DuQuoin and Jack Etherton and wife LaDonna of Metropolis; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, James, Mark and Russel and four sisters, Ella, Molly, Bertha and Hester.

Private family services were held Saturday, January 5 at 11 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. John Lewis officiating. Interment was in Hallidayboro cemetery.

William F. Allabastro
William F. Allabastro, 77, of DuQuoin, passed away at 1:36 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2002 at his home.

Mr. Allabastro owned a wrecker service for 33 years. He was of the Protestant faith. He was a U.S. Army veteran of W.W. II.

He was born December 30, 1924 at DuQuoin, the son of Frederick and Besse M. (Staton) Allabastro, Jr. He married Marjorie Crain on June 16, 1946 at DuQuoin.

Surviving are his wife, Marjorie Allabastro of DuQuoin; mother, Besse Allabastro of DuQuoin; brother, David Allabastro of DuQuoin; sister, Mickey Schobert of DuQuoin; three nephews and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services weree Tuesday, January 8 at 11 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Shaw DeMent officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.

Graveside military rites were conducted by the DuQuoin VFW.

Friends called at Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 7:30 a.m. until time of service.

Ruby Mae Baker
Ruby Mae Baker, 79, of Ava died at 10:15 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 7, 2002 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro.

Mrs. Baker was born Wednesday, March 1, 1922 in Carterville, the daughter of John and Gettie Colline (Walker) Burroughs. She married William C. Baker on December 7, 1978 in Hillsboro, Mo. He preceded her in death on Aug. 9, 1999.

She was a retired telephone operator. She belonged to the Telephone Pioneers and was a member of the Apostolic Church in Ava.

Survivors include two step-sons, Curtis Baker of Cutler and William Baker of Tilden; three step-daughters, Ida Krause of Sparta, Elizabeth Humphreys of Lenzburg and Cathy Scanlon of Freeburg; eight step-grandchildren; 16 step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Robert Downs of Tamaroa, Wayne Downs of Du Quoin, and Milton Downs of Collinsville; four sisters, Rosie Allen of Ava, Bonnie Smith of Arkansas City, Kan., Thelma Smith of DuQuoin and Viola Baker of Cutler; two half-brothers, Paul Burroughs and Bob Burroughs, both of Marion; and two sisters-in-law, Sharon Downs of Lively Grove and Lulu Belle Downs of Bethalto. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, a sister and two stepsons.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002 at the Apostolic Church of Ava with Rev. Charles E. Issler officiating. Burial was in the Coulterville City cemetery, Coulterville. Friends called after 5 p.m. Wednesday at Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be made to the Apostolic Church in Ava.

Patricia R. Brostmeyer
Patricia R. Brostmeyer, age 65, of Pinckneyville, died Friday, January 18, 2002 at 4:25 a.m. in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital Skilled Care Unit.

Patricia was born in DuQuoin on July 12, 1936, the daughter of Len S. and Grace (Casey) Hartwell. She married Norman 'Tex' Brostmeyer February 11, 1961 in Pinckneyville and he survives.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Larry West of South Carolina and Peggy and Mark Allen of Oregon; one step-daughter, Leslie (Woolbright) LeBlanc and Jim of Louisiana; six grandchildren, Tod and Jon Hardacre, Knox and Campbell Allen, Chelsea (Steven) Sims and Casey LeBlanc and three great-grandchildren, Elliott, Emily and Jacob Sims. She is also survived by two sisters, Maxine Lueker of Pinckneyville and Mary Ellen (Mrs. Henry) Justice of DuQuoin; one brother, Bill (Julia) Hartwell of Missouri, one brother and sister-in-law, Euclid and Betty Brostmeyer of Tamaroa and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Otis 'Sonny' Woolbright; her in-laws, William and Emma Brostmeyer; a brother, Wesley Hartwell and a brother-in-law, Elmer Lueker.

Pat was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, the Republican Party and as a former PCHS Cheerleader, she remained an avid Panther Basketball fan.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 21 at 11 a.m. in St. Paul United Church of Christ with Pastor Karen Stahr Terada officiating. Interment was in the Mueller Hill cemetery, Pinckneyville.

Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, Pinckneyville on Sunday from 6 until 8 p.m. and Monday from 8 until 9:30 a.m. then at the church from 10 a.m. until services.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Hospice of Perry County or the Pinckneyville Panther Booster Club.

Geneva Belle Bleicker
Geneva Belle Bleicker, 94, of Tamaroa, died at 4:38 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.

Geneva was a homemaker. She and her husband, Louis Ausburg, had operated the Ausburg Blue Room steak house for 25 years. She was a Baptist.

She was born August 21, 1907 in Ledford, Ill., the daughter of William and Dorothy (Sears) Roberts. She married Louis Ausburg in 1937, and he preceded her in death on May 6, 1958. She then married Louis E. Bleicker on January 17, 1962 in St. Louis. He passed away on Dec. 13, 1966.

She is survived by three sisters, Gwalia Roberts of Du Quoin, Kathryn Gillmore of Belleville and Gretchen Taylor of Wauchula, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and several brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 9, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating. Friends called from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park, Du Quoin.

Joe Flint
Joe Flint, 77, of Du Quoin, passed away at 12:55 p.m. Tuesday, January 15, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Joe had worked and lived al of his life in Du Quoin. He was a retired carpenter working for Dale Williams construction, Bob Eisenhauer construction and Dale Schwinn construction. He was of the non-denominational faith. He was a US Navy veteran of W.W.II. He was a member of the Carpenters Union, 50 year life member Local 707.

He was born July 21, 1924 at Du Quoin, the son of Walter and Lula (Robinson) Flint. He was first married to Imogene Lashbrook, he then married Betty Woodside Smith in 1970 at Du Quoin and she passed away March 22, 1991.

He is survived by four children - Tannya Shockley and husband Ralph of Du Quoin, Phillip Flint and wife Connie of Du Quoin, Cindy Flint Harris of Benton, Monte Flint and wife Valerie of Princeton, Indiana; three step children - Tessie Cochran and husband Bill of Coeur Dalene, Idaho, Pam Goh and husband Andy of Arlington, Texas, Rae Cummins and husband Joe David of Mt. Vernon; one sister, Doris Rodgers of Troy, Texas; one brother, Lyle Flint of Big Sandy, Tennessee; special friend, Beulah Slover of Du Quoin; nine grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one step great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two brothers, Virgil and Gene Flint.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, January 18, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Jim Holt and Mark Peters officiating. Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin. Interment was in Old Du Quoin cemetery at Du Quoin.
