Naomi B. Marks Naomi B. Marks, 98, of Vienna, formerly of Creal Springs, died 6:35 a.m. Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Hillview Health Care in Vienna.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2002, at White Oak cemetery in Creal Springs with Bro. Bob Donelson officiating. Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 21, 2002, at Cosby-Sloan Funeral Home in Creal Springs.
She is survived by a daughter, 14 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, 43 great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, a special friend, and two daughters-in-law.

Ronald N. Kiefer
Ronald N. Kiefer, 74, of Dahlgren, died 11:30 a.m. Sunday, June 23, 2002, at his residence.
Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2002, at I.O.O.F. cemetery in Dahlgren with military rites by American Legion Post No. 106. There will be no visitation. Those attending are asked to go directly to the cemetery.
Arrangements are in the charge of Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren.
He is survived by three sisters and several nieces and nephews.

Lavina Stein Rice
Lavina Stein Rice, 100, of Harrisburg, died at the Carrier Mills Nursing Home on Wednesday, June 19. She was born to Christopher and Kathryn (Matz) Stein January 28, 1902, in Carmi.
She also lived in Evansville, Ind. where she became a Registered Nurse after graduating from Welborn Hospital's School of Nursing. She came to Harrisburg to work at the Harrisburg Hospital. At one time she was a Public Health Nurse. She also worked at Lightner Hospital and Galatia Nursing Home as Nursing Supervisor.
She married O.D. Rice April 2, 1927 in Marion. They were long time members of the First Presbyterian Church of Harrisburg. They had a son, Glen (Barbara) Rice of Swansea; a daughter, Jane (Sam) Stafford of Harrisburg; two grandsons, Christopher (Kim) Rice of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Douglas (Angela) Stafford of Thompsons Station, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Jill (Ralph) Crago of Gilbert, Ariz., Elizabeth (Larry) Pittsley of Urbana; four great-grandchildren, Claire and Will Crago and Carson and Noah Stafford.
Services will be conducted by Gaskins Funeral Home with the Rev. Judith Beyler presiding. Burial will be at Sunset Lawn cemetery 10 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2002. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial services at 2:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Presbyterian Church, Friends of the Library, SIC Foundation (Fine Arts Department), or Hospice of Southern Illinois in Marion.

Arthur Tarrence
Arthur Tarrence, 80, of Bakersfield, Calif., formerly of Ridgway, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, in Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2002, at Doughty-Calhoun-O'Mears Funeral Home in Bakersfield. Burial will be in California. Cox & Son Funeral Home in Ridgway is in charge of the local arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Tarrence of Bakersfield; three daughters; one brother; 20 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Thelma H. Whiteside
Thelma H. Whiteside, 84, of Plano, Texas, formerly of Harrisburg, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Collinwood Nursing Home in Plano.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2002, at Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home in Carrier Mills. Burial will be in Robinson-Wise cemetery in Ozark. Visitation is 11 a.m. to service time Friday at the funeral home.
She was born Dec. 23, 1917, in Stonefort to the late Alvin and Clara (Evetts) Nicholson. In Feb. 1936, she married Rolla Whiteside, who survives.
She owned and operated the Stylette Beauty Salon in Harrisburg.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Elaine Boren of Dallas, Texas and Judy (Jay) Waite of Carrollton, Texas; a son, Trevor (Louise) Whiteside of Plano, Texas; her twin sister, Velma (Webb) Hall of Stonefort, another sister, Margaret Rosenkilde of Walnut Creek, Calif.; a brother, Loyd (Rosemary) Nicholson of Carrier Mills; six grandchildren, Lisa DeMaster of Houston, Texas, Linda Given of Carmel, Ind., T.J. Whiteside and Thad Whiteside, both of Price, Utah, Kimberly Camp of Snellville, Ga., and Jae Rangel of Lewisville, Texas; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Tom Whiteside; and seven brothers and sisters, Everett, Vernell, and Earl Nicholson, Ruby Russell, Ruth Church, Bonnie Paden and Betty Richerson.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Robinson-Wise cemetery in lieu of flowers.

Donald R. Richardson
Donald R. Richardson, 63, of Junction, formerly of New Haven, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at his residence.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2002, at Cox & Son Funeral Home in Shawneetown with the Rev. Tom Flewellen officiating. Burial will be in Union Ridge cemetery in New Haven. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 13, 2002, at the funeral home.
He was born Oct. 1, 1938, in New Haven to the late Lewis and Reta (Carney) Richardson. He was the widower of Anna Mae (Spivey) Richardson.
He was a retired truck driver.
He is survived by a son, Will (Robin) Richardson of Shawneetown; four daughters, Patricia (Dickie) Woods of Ridgway, Cathy (Mike) Malone of Junction, Kim Stacey of Shawneetown, Donna Owen of Carrier Mills; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Curt Richardson of Omaha, Jim Richardson of Eldorado, Doyle Richardson of New Haven, Kenny Richardson of Enfield; and a sister, Margaret Bowers of McLeansboro.

Steve Eric Farrar
Steve Eric Farrar, 47, of Torrance, Calif., formerly of Carrier Mills, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at his residence.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills.

Evelyn Ellis
Evelyn Ellis, 90, of Golconda, died 1:06 p..m. Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Hardin County Hospital.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Aly Funeral Home in Golconda with the Rev. E.J. Cole officiating.
Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery in Golconda. Visitation is 6 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2002, at the funeral home.
She is survived by four nephews and four nieces.

Gilbert Ashby
Gilbert Ashby, 77, of Eldorado, passed away Saturday evening, June 15, 2002, at Ferrell Hospital.
He was born July 16, 1924, to Earl and Mae Ashby. He married Ruby Harrelson on Sept. 20, 1947. He worked construction and retired from maintenance at Pearce Hospital in 1985.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby, and their four children. One son, Bert and Letha Ashby of Eldorado, and three daughters, Brenda and Sean McNeely of Washington state, Ella Ashby of Harrisburg, and Bonnie and Monte Newman of Eldorado. He was a loving grandpa to their seven grandchildren, Melissa (Robbie) Sturgill, Whitney Ashby, Erin McNeely, Staci (Matthew) Rice, Pamela (Brent) Church, Jonathan Shaw, and Tera (Brian) Baird; and their six great-grandchildren, Austin Sturgill, Elizabeth and Dylan Rice, Taylor and Ashley Church, and Keaton Baird.
Services will be at Watson Funeral Home 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2002, with the Rev. Nolan Smith officiating. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 17, 2002. Burial is at Cottage Grove cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation and left at Watson Funeral Home.

Christopher James Abell
Christopher James Abell, 30, of Ridgway, died 7:15 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2002, at Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado as a result of an automobile accident.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ridgway with Father Mark Stec officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's cemetery in Ridgway. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 17, 2002, at Vickery Funeral Chapel in Ridgway with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Military rites will be performed by Ridgway American Legion Post No. 596.
He was born Feb. 14, 1972, in Eldorado to Anita (Crawford) and the late Kenneth Abell. On May 15, 2001, he married Christina Lynn Holbrook, who survives.
He was a carpenter. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ridgway. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus L.A. Lambert Council No. 1581.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a daughter, Hillary Donn Abell of Ridgway; three sons, Kenneth Levi, Ethan James, and Christopher Lane Abell of Ridgway; a stepdaughter, Jessica Sue Ann Miller of Ridgway; two stepsons, Austin Joseph and Dustin Lee Miller of Ridgway; a sister, Dana (Dave) Kelly of Winchester, Va.; a brother, Eric (Natalie) Abell of Minot Air Force Base, N.D.; three nieces; and two nephews.

Ruby Margaret
Baldwin Ruby Margaret Baldwin, 88, wife of Dr. James M. Baldwin, died Sunday morning, June 16, 2002, in Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Galatia. She was born Jan. 3, 1914, in Hamilton County to H.W. and Hettie Elizabeth Smith. She is survived by her husband. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in April of this year. Mrs. Baldwin was an alumnus of Southern Illinois University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary with a bachelor's degree in religious education. In 1954, she was named "Outstanding Homemaker of the Year" in Salem. She was a member of the Women's Club in Salem and was in great demand as a book reviewer there and in Bartlesville, Okla. She taught Sunday school classes in all the churches where her husband pastored. In 1931 she graduated from Benton High School. In her early years, when she was in college, she taught school at Boster School in McLeansboro and Conners College in Whittington. She is survived by four children: James Marvin (Janice) Baldwin, M.D. of Ashland City, Tenn., John Timothy Baldwin, M.D. of Oklahoma City, Okla., Elizabeth Ann (Stan) Hastey of Alexandria, Va., Pamela Jane (Rickey) Cates of Galatia. Her eight grandchildren include Lisa Hastey Shirley, Atlanta, Ga., Stephen Baldwin Hastey, Dumphries, Va., Christopher Baldwin, Ashland City, Tenn., Christina McCafferty, New Orleans, La., Jon Michael Baldwin, Oklahoma City, Okla., Lauren Baldwin, Lawton, Okla., James Riley Cates and Carson Paige Cates of Galatia. Visitation will be held 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at Long Branch Baptist Church in Galatia with interment at Tate's Chapel cemetery.

Mary E. McGhee
Mary E. McGhee, 41, of Eldorado, died Friday, June 14, 2002, from the result of an automobile accident on the Ridgway Eldorado Blacktop. Services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at Cox & Son Funeral Home in Ridgway with the Rev. Tom Flewellen officiating. Burial will be in Westwood cemetery in Shawneetown. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 17, 2002, at the funeral home. She was born May 4, 1961, in Harrisburg to the late Clarence and Bobby Imogene (Stout) Farmer. She was a CNA working at the Eldorado Care Center. She was married to John Robert "J.R." McGhee. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Clarence Yarber of Shawneetown and Jonathan Yarber of Eldorado; a daughter, Jessie Farmer of Eldorado; a grandson, Caleb Levi Yarber of Shawneetown; and four sisters, Emma Shoemaker, Cathy Farmer, and Rose Crisp, all of Harrisburg, and Beverly June Yarber of Mount Vernon, Ind.

Heaven Lee Newsome
Heaven Lee Newsome, infant child, died at birth, 4 a.m. Thursday, June 13, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Private graveside services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Lakeview cemetery in Carrier Mills with the Rev. Bob Prather officiating. Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills was in charge of the arrangements.
She was survived by her parents, Heather Wilson and Harold Newsome Jr., both of Harrisburg; her maternal grandparents, Butch and Phyllis Wilson of Harrisburg; her paternal grandparents, Harold L. and Jonell Newsome Sr. and Dee Dee Newsome, all of Harrrisburg; and a half-brother, Cyrus Newsome of Harrisburg.
