Mr. Leo L. Ballard
Leo Lloyd “Boonie” Ballard, age 81, of Roodhouse, died Friday
evening, Feb. 9, 2001 at his residence.
He was born Feb. 27, 1919 in Roodhouse, the son of Leo Ward and
Elsie Smock Ballard.
He married Geraldine “Gerry” Thompson on May 10, 1941 in New
London, Missouri and she survives.
He is also survived by one brother, Lawrence “Sam” (wife, Peggy)
Ballard of White Hall; and two sisters, Irene Williams of Alva, Florida and
Alice (husband, David) Weddersten of Roodhouse and many nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Martha Thompson,
Cassie Guthrie and Rose Mary Ballard and four brothers, Gilbert “Gib”
Ballard, Edward Ballard, Smith Ballard and Ward Keith “Big Sam”
Ballard.
Mr. Ballard served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942-1945 and was
a member of the Roodhouse American Legion. He worked for many years
at the Roodhouse Envelope Company, and was a pipefitter for Standard Oil
Co. in Wood River. He later was a janitor at the White Hall Elementary for
ten years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the East Alton First
Baptist Church.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, 2001 at the White
Hall Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Make A Wish Foundation.
The Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Roodhouse is in charge of
arrangements.

Mrs. Patricia A. Baptist (Hoots)
Patricia A. Baptist, 52, of Jacksonville died Saturday morning, November 3, 2001 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born August 20, 1949 in Jacksonville the daughter of Clifford T. and Virginia Louise Nutgrass Hoots. She married Paul Baptist and he preceded her in death.
She is survived by two brothers, Roger (wife, Linda) Hoots and Garry (wife, Mary) Hoots, both of Jacksonville; two sisters, Kay (husband, Donald) Garman of Jacksonville and Judy (husband, Bob) Hawkins of Murrayville; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald, David, and Thurman; and one sister, Connie Sharon Hoots.
Mrs. Baptist was a homemaker and a member of Franklin Baptist Church. She loved animals, especially tropical fish and dogs.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 6, 2001 at the Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville with burial at Winchester City Cemetery at Winchester. Friends may call after 5 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Arthritis Foundation.

Mr. James L. Barnd
James L. Barnd, age 49, of White Hall, died Saturday evening, June 2,
2001 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born Sept. 30, 1951 in White Hall, the son of Paul L. and
Sadie Dawson Barnd.
He married Eva McMillen Hawkins on March 12, 1983 in White Hall
and she survives.
He is also survived by his mother, Sadie Barnd of White Hall; two
daughters, Deanna (husband, Richard) Gansz of White Hall and Nicole
(husband, Craige) Gernigin of White Hall; one son, James Barnd, Jr. of
Quincy; two step daughters, Amanda Hawkins of Kampsville and Rebecca
Hawkins of Jacksonville; five grandchildren; two brothers, Chester Barnd of
Jacksonville and Paul S. “Buss” Barnd of White Hall and one sister, Brenda
Potter of Quincy. He was preceded in death by his father.
Mr. Barnd served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict,
stationed in Germany. He worked at the Illinois School for the Visually
Impaired in Jacksonville, where he enjoyed his work and friends and fellow
employees there. He also enjoyed auto body work and helped several shops
in the area in his spare time. He was a member of the Bethel Farms Church
in Murrayville.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2001
at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial in the White
Hall Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday
at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Illinois School for the
Visually Impaired.

Mrs. Helen A. Barnett (Owdom)
Helen A. Barnett, age 92, of rural Roodhouse, died early Thursday
morning, May 31, 2001 at her residence.
She was born July 24, 1908 in Patterson, the daughter of Buell F. and
Edith Hubbard Owdom.
She married Jay Jennings Barnett on May 21, 1930 in Winchester and
he preceded her in death on July 14, 1995.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary (husband, Howard) Lovelace
of Patterson; three sons, David O. Barnett of Las Cruces, New Mexico;
Melvin “Pete” (wife, Patty) Barnett of White Hall and Dean Barnett of
White Hall; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by one grandson, Carl Lovelace and two brothers, George
and Lowell Owdom.
Mrs. Barnett taught school for a short time after her marriage, then
stayed at home to raise her family and help her husband on their farm near
Patterson. She was a member of the Wilmington Baptist Church in
Patterson. She enjoyed playing piano and singing.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 2, 2001 at
the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial in the Pine Tree
Cemetery near Patterson. The family will meet friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m.
Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Blessing Hospice of
Green e County.

Mr. Finis Barton
Finis Barton, age 85, of Pittsfield, Ill. died Wednesday afternoon (February 28, 2001) at his residence.
He was born November 21, 1915 in Nebo, Ill. son of the late Beach Barton, Jr. and Neva Killebrew Barton.
He married Dorothy Eileen Smith on October 16, 1938 in Bowling Green , Mo. and she preceded him July 15, 1972. He later married Ruth Ralston Bryan on July 21, 1973 in Patterson, Ill. and she preceded him in death in December 10, 1992.
Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Joyce) Clarkson of Scottsdale, Arizona; one son, Berkley Barton and wife Luetta of Lancaster, Mo.; one step-daughter, Mrs. Robert (Ada Ruth) White of Winchester, Ill.; two step-sons, Palmer Bryan and wife Paula of Winchester, Ill., and Roger Bryan and wife Sheryl of Quincy, Ill., fourteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; a former daughter-in-law, Joe Ann Barton of Scotia, New York; one sister, Mrs. William (Melva Ree) Melton of Victorville, California; two brothers, Dallas Barton and wife Lillian and Lyle Barton and wife Blanche all of Nebo, Ill.; a special friend, Luanna Neal of Pittsfield, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives; one grandson, Brett Alan Clarkson; and one sister, Lovene DeGuire.
Mr. Barton was a 1934 graduate of Nebo High School in Nebo, Ill. and attended Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill.. He was a lifetime grain & livestock farmer. He was a conservation technician with the US Department of Agriculture retiring in 1980, and a past sales representative with Pike County Farm Service. He was a member of the Pittsfield First Baptist Church where he was past deacon. He was also a member of the American Angus and Illinois Angus Associations.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Pittsfield First Baptist Church in Pittsfield, Ill. with Rev. Frank Claybourne officiating. Burial will be in Crescent Heights Cemetery in Pleasant Hill, Ill.. Friends may call 4 p.m. Saturday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill. with family meeting friends from 6-8 p.m.. Memorials may be made to Pittsfield First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Donnabelle Marie Barton (Thompson)
Donnabelle Marie Barton, age 83, of Pinellas Park, Florida and formerly of Pittsfield, Ill. died Monday afternoon (October 8, 2001) at North Side Hospital in Pinellas Park, Florida.
She was born September 10, 1918 near Atlanta, Ill. daughter of the late Roy and Mona Bishop Thompson.
She married Milo E. Barton on November 21, 1946 in San Antonio, Texas and he survives but will not be able to attend the service due to illness.
Also surviving is one daughter, Karen Bucklew and husband William of Quincy, Ill.; one son, David Barton and wife Barbara of Highland, Ill.; one sister, Bernadine Houghton of Columbus, Ohio; one brother, Jim Thompson and wife Marian of Atlanta, Ill.; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister in infancy.
Mrs. Barton was graduate of Atlanta High School in Atlanta, Ill. and attended nurses training in Lincoln, Ill.. She was a registered nurse working in Illini Hospital in Pittsfield, Ill. for many years. She enjoyed crochet and knitting, cooking, and loved to travel.
Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday (October 11, 2001) at Pittsfield West Cemetery with Rev. John Ruzich officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Mrs. Frances P. Bates (Wolfe)
Frances P. Bates, 70, of Jacksonville died Tuesday morning, August 28, 2001 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. She was born on March 9, 1931 in Jacksonville, the daughter of Frank O. and Ruth Porter Wolfe. She married R. Donald Bates in July of 1952 in Jacksonville and he survives.
Also surviving are one son, Donald Ray (wife, Kelly) Bates of Jacksonville; three daughters, Dana (husband, Jerry) Lindley of Corpus Christi, Texas, Vickie (husband, Bob) Kindred of Jacksonville and Donna Kay (husband, Steve) Watkins of Phoenix, Arizona; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Joan (husband, Jack) Patterson and Mary Margaret (husband, Alvin) Saunderson both of Jacksonville and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, John Wolfe (surviving wife Kay of Chatham), and one niece, Peggy Jo Borgman.
Mrs. Bates retired from the City of Jacksonville after 12 years as bookkeeper for the city landfill. Prior to that she was employed at the MacMurray College Bookstore. She was a member of Central Christian Church, American Legion Auxiliary, AMVETS Auxiliary, and the 49ers. She was an avid bridge and bingo player and enjoyed cooking, sewing, and spending time with her family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 31, 2001, at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 12 noon on Thursday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church Building Fund.

Infant Thomas James Bates
Thomas James Bates, infant son of Frances Wicker, was stillborn Tuesday, August 14, 2001 at Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville.
He is survived by his mother of Jacksonville; two brothers, Michael Bates and Thaddeus Wicker, both at home; maternal grandparents Steve and Hester Johnson of Jacksonville; maternal great-grandmother, Eugena White of Jacksonville; maternal step-grandmothers Susan Bates of Thayer, Missouri and Dorothy Brown of Jacksonville; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by maternal grandfathers Charles White and Danny Bates, and one sister, Rachel Marie Bates.
Graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 at Jacksonville East Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bernice Nadine Bauer (Sneeden)
Bernice Nadine Bauer, age 90, of the Griggsville Estates Boarding Home in Griggsville, Ill. and formerly of Pittsfield, Ill. died 4:30 a.m. Wednesday (November 14, 2001) at the boarding home.
She was born October 13, 1911 in Pittsfield, Ill. daughter of the late Charles and Lelia Foreman Sneeden.
She married George William Bauer on March 23, 1930 on the family farm in Newburg Township, Pike County, Ill. and he preceded her in death on November 13, 1997.
Surviving is one daughter, Neitha Vey Dickerson of Pittsfield, Ill.; one son, Larry Bauer and wife Betty of Clemson, South Carolina; four grandchildren, Mrs. Larry (Charlene) Gleckler of Griggsville, Ill. and Gregory L. Dickerson and wife Carolyn of Pittsfield, Ill., Tom Bauer of Ft. Jackson, South Carolina and Bill Bauer and wife Margaret of Columbia, South Carolina; five great-grandchildren, Tressa Dickerson of Lees Summit, Mo., Chanda Lowe and husband Nolan of Quincy, Ill., Bryan Gleckler of Springfield, Ill. and Brent Gleckler and wife Candice of Farmington Hills, Michigan, Wills Bauer of Columbia, South Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a sister, Juanita Vey Sneeden.
Mrs. Bauer was a member of the Pittsfield First Christian Church in Pittsfield, Ill. and was a past 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star who loved to read and sow.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday (November 17, 2001) at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill. with Rev. Dan King and Rev. Clay Boyd officiating. Burial will be in Pittsfield West Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Blessing Hospice of Pike County.

Mr. Charlie A. Baze
Charlie Baze, age 87, of Alton, formerly of Hillview and
Walkerville, died early Monday morning, June 25, 2001 at Elder Care of
Alton.
He was born Jan. 29, 1914 in Scott County, north of Hillview, the
son of John B. and Anita Newell Baze.
He married Alice Ward on Dec. 9, 1933 in Hillview and she survives.
He is also survived by five sons, Charlie Baze of Dumas, Texas;
James Baze of Alton; Tim Baze of Alton; Robert Baze of Hardin; and Jack
Baze of Brighton; three daughters, Doris “Dotty” Harbison of Woodriver;
Joella Wyman of Hardin and Geneva Duff of Kuttawa, KY: thirty-nine
grandchildren; forty-five great grandchildren; one sister, Judy Tooley of
Decatur; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one
son, Vernon; two brothers and four sisters.
Mr. Baze retired from Laclede Steel in Alton in 1976 after 25 years.
He farmed with his father in the Hillview area and farmed his own farm near
Hardin for many years. He loved to hunt and fish. He was a member of the
Walkerville Baptist Church in Walkerville.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 28, 2001 at
the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial at the
Walkerville Cemetery in Walkerville. The family will meet friends from
3:00-6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to
the Walkerville Baptist Church.
