Mr. Eugene Crist Rawlins
Eugene Crist Rawlins, age 94, of rural Roodhouse, died Sunday
evening, April 22, 2001 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
He was born Oct. 20, 1906, the elder son of Ira Eugene and Fannie
Crist Rawlins, near Roodhouse, on the 80 acres patented from the
government in 1929 by his great-grandfather. The sheepskin Land Patent
was signed by President Andrew Jackson, a fact of which Eugene was very
proud.
June 8, 1927 he married his childhood sweetheart, Beulah Naomi
Brickey, in Carrollton. She died in St. Louis, Missouri on May 17, 1962.
Two daughters were born to this marriage: Louise Jean (Charles) Buhlig
and Karen Adele (Robert) Lane. In June 1965, he married Florence Dunn of
Phoenix, Arizona. She died in Roodhouse Oct. 25, 1989. He was also
preceded in death by his parents and a young brother, Ralph Vanderheyden
Rawlins on Oct. 30, 1919, a son-in-law, and all twenty-seven of his cousins.
He is survived by his two daughters, one son-in-law; six
grandchildren, Dirk, Tadd, Clark and Gretchen Buhlig; Cassie Miller and
Natalie Lane. The are five great-grandchildren, Cheyenne Miller, Zachary,
Sophia and Charley Renae Buhlig and Heather Krall. Seven nieces and
three nephews also survive.
He graduated, as did his wife, from Roodhouse High School, with the
class of 1924. He enjoyed attending the annual Alumni Banquet until his
death, in later years being honored as the “oldest graduate”. He served on
the Roodhouse School Board during the 30’s and 40’s.
Eugene was a lifelong farmer, and as a young man worked with his
father in the family dairy. During the late 30’s he was employed by Illinois
Rural Electric Company to obtain the right-of-way for rural electrification.
When accomplished he wired many area homes.
He was a member of the Roodhouse Christian Church, Disciples of
Christ, where his ancestors were Charter Members. He had served as a
Deacon. Upon the church closing in 1999, his membership was moved to
the First Christian Church in White Hall. He was a Charter Member of the
Jacksonville Area Antique Car Association, and had held various offices.
He was also a member of the Green e County Farm Bureau,a member of The
National Franklin Club, past member of the Antique Auto Club of Missouri
and a lifetime member of the Prairieland Heritage Museum. He served
many years on the IREC Nominating Board.
The first President Mr. Rawlins remembered was Teddy Roosevelt,
asking his mother to “invite President Roosevelt for Sunday dinner.” His
hero was F.D.R., for “bringing me out of the Great Depression.” His entire
life, he continued to have unquestioning faith in his government. When
asked, a couple of years ago, the greatest changes noted in his almost 100
years of life, he answered, “Farming”. Other changes, communication, trips
to the moon (which he had always predicted), etc. apparently did not
surprise him much.
Eugene was a loving, devoted, generous son, husband, father,
neighbor and friend. He was an industrious, frugal, honest man who loved
the world in which he lived and did his best to take care of “his share of
things”. He took great pride in making something out of nothing, repairing
things, his family and his belongings. In later years, he enjoyed restoring,
driving and showing his antique automobiles. He always enjoyed Sunday
motor trips and traveling to different parts of the United States.
