Mr. Otis L. "Jack" Staats
Otis L. “Jack” Staats, age 69, of Hillview, died Tuesday afternoon,
Feb. 19, 2002 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born Aug. 7, 1932 in Hillview, the son of William Franklin
and Glenna M. Wilkinson Staats. His mother, Glenna Staats, survives in
White Hall.
He married Pansy Walls on Dec. 24, 1951 in Hillview and she
survives.
He is also survived by one son, David E. (wife, Barbara) Staats of
Springfield; two daughters, Debbie (husband, Jim) Gross of Wise River,
Montana and Linda (husband, Eddie) Phillips of Hillview; five grandsons,
Eric Staats, Kevin Gross, Timothy Gross, Nathan Phillips and Casey
Phillips; one sister, Barbara Harris of Jacksonville and two brothers, Bob G.
Staats and Glenn Staats, both of Springfield. He was preceded in death by
his father; an infant son, Otis LeRoy Staats, Jr. and one sister, Mary Ann
DeSha.
Mr. Staats served in the U.S. Marines from 1952 to 1956 as a
gunner’s mate aboard the U.S.S. St. Paul and was a member of the
Bryant-Thomas American Legion Post in Hillview. He retired from Federal
Steel and Erection in East Alton in 1992 after 26 years and was a member of
the Ornamental Iron Workers Local 518.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2002 at
the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial at Pine Tree
Cemetery near Patterson. The family will meet friends from 5:00-8:00 p.m.
Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Pine Tree
Cemetery.

Mrs. Pansy L. Staats (Walls)
Pansy L. Staats, age 67, of Hillview, died Sunday afternoon, April
14, 2002 at her daughter’s home in Hillview.
She was born July 9, 1934 in rural Hillview, the daughter of Herman
L. and Nora Buchanan Walls.
She married Otis L. “Jack” Staats on Dec. 24, 1951 in Hillview and
he preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 2002.
She is survived by two daughters, Debbie (husband, Jim) Gross of
Wise River, Montana and Linda (husband, Eddie) Phillips of Hillview; one
son, David E. (wife, Barbara) Staats of Springfield; five grandsons, Eric
Staats, Kevin Gross, Timothy Gross, Nathan Phillips, and Casey Phillips;
her mother-in-law, Glenna Staats of White Hall; and one sister, Hazel Nolle
of Carrollton. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Otis Leroy
Staats, Jr. and an uncle, Earnest “Boots” Walls who helped raise her after
the death of her father when she was three months old.
Mrs. Staats served on the Hillview Town Board for several years.
She enjoyed watching the birds, working in her flower garden and her
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2002
at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial at Pine Tree
Cemetery near Patterson. The family will meet friends from 5:00-8:00 p.m.
Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Hillview
Baptist Church.

Mr. Ellis (Alpo) W. Stapleton
Ellis W. (Alpo) Stapleton, 56, of Wichita, Kansas, formerly Palmyra Illinois area, died Saturday, January
26, 2002 in Wichita. He was born January 31, 1945 in Granite City, Illinois a son of Wilmer and Magdelene
Stapleton, who lived in Madison, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.
He formerly lived in the Palmyra area from 1968 to 1978.
Surviving are children Dawn Stapleton, Wendy Nicholson, and Chip Stapleton all of Kansas, Previous
Spouse Betty Peeler of Palmyra, and a step-daughter Wendi Lee of Carlinville, IL.
Memorial services will be held at 8:00 pm Friday, February 1, 2002 in Stults-Neece Funeral Home in
Palmyra, with visitation from 6 to 8 pm just prior. Burial will be in Kansas. Memorials are suggested to American
Cancer Society.

Mr. Michael Steele
Michael Steele, 53, of Jacksonville died Sunday afternoon, July 14, 2002 at Passavant Area Hospital. He was born April 14, 1949 in Chicago the son of Scott and Vivian Steele and they preceded him in death.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and a member of the Christian faith.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July17, 2002 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Immanuel East Cemetery in Jacksonville. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Graydon E. Steelman
Graydon E. Steelman, 82, of Collinsville passed away Thursday night (May 23, 2002) at O’Fallon Health Care in O‘Fallon, Illinois.
He was born November 5, 1919 in Alsey the son of the late Thomas Otis and Ethel Hoots Steelman.
He attended Alsey schools and graduated from Milton High School in 1938. He was a forward for the 1937-38 Milton Mustang Basketball team that played in the High School Boys State Tournament. Mr. Steelman was a US Army Air Corps Veteran of World War 2 stationed at Wheeler Field in Hawaii. He was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Mr. Steelman worked for over 20 years for General Motors at the assembly plant in St. Louis. He loved baseball and football, following his favorite teams the Cardinals and the Rams.
Surviving are 2 daughters Linda (husband Mike) McKay of Fenton, Missouri and Carol Luke of St. Louis, Missouri, a son Tom Steelman of O’Fallon, Illinois, 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, and a brother Keith Steelman of Winchester.
Preceding him in death were his parents, an infant daughter Ginger, a sister Sybil Chumley and 3 brothers Donald “Penny”, Gerald and Gordon Steelman.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 am Monday (May 27, 2002) at the Alsey Baptist Church. Burial will be in Bowers Cemetery.
Friends may call after 3:00 PM Sunday at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester where the family will meet with friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM. Memorial contributions can be made to Diabetes research or to the American Heart Association.

Rev. Richard P. Steinbach
Rev. Richard P. Steinbach, 69, of Carrollton was pronounced dead unexpectedly on Friday at 5:30 P.M. at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. born in Quincy on April 13, 1933 he was the son of the late Earl R. and Sylvia Ann Green Steinbach. On June 6, 1954 he married the former Carolyn Williams in Quincy and she survives. Also surviving are 2 daughters: Sherri (husband Joe) Montanez of Carrollton and Tina (husband Brad) Corbin of Glen Carbon, 3 sons: Timothy (wife Dawn) Steinbach of Carrollton, Phillip (wife Deborah) Steinbach of North Las Vegas, Nev., David Lee (wife Cherish) Steinbach of Torrance, Calif., a daughter-in-law: Pat Steinbach of Glen Carbon, 12 grandchildren, a sister: Thelma Stanbridge of Quincy and a brother Weldon Steinbach of Quincy. He was preceded in death by a son Daniel and a brother Russell and a sister Neva Dee Werneth. Rev. Steinbach was an Assembly of God minister for 47 years, serving many years in Carrollton. He was an alumnus of Great Lakes Bible Institute and the Central Bible College. He served as Chaplain and Firefighter with the Carrollton Fire Protection District for many years. He was a member of the Carrollton Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. on Thursday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Memorial services will be held at 7 P.M. Private family committal will be later. Memorials may be made to the Carrollton Assembly of God Church.

Mrs. Lela R. Stevens (King)
Lela R. Stevens, age 88, of Green field, died Saturday evening, Dec. 7, 2002 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born Sept. 30, 1914 in Kane Township, the daughter of Lee H. and Meddy A. Raines King. She first married John Weber and he preceded her in death, she later married Edward L. Stevens on Aug. 31, 1940 in Troy, Missouri and he preceded her in death on April 14, 1991. She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Stevens of Edwardsville; one grandson, Scott (wife, Rachel) Weber of Jacksonville; one great granddaughter, Elizabeth Jo Weber; one sister, Imogene (husband, Henry Carl) Steinacher of Kane; and among her many friends were special friends, Harold and Nancy Hillis and Charles and Mary Jennings, all of Green field. She was preceded in death by one son, Paul (surviving wife, Jeanette of Carrollton) Weber; and two brothers, Keith and Lewis King. Mrs. Stevens was a nurse’s aid at Our Saviour and Norris Hospitals in Jacksonville and later at Central Supply at Passavant Hospital, retiring in 1987. She was a member of the Fayette Baptist Church at Fayette and was very active in the women’s group there. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002 at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton with the Rev. Garrett Melvin officiating. Burial will be at the Carrollton City Cemetery. Friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Monday with the family meeting friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Baptist Children’s Home in Carmi.

Mr. John William "Bill" Stewart
John William “Bill” Stewart, age 58, of White Hall, died Monday
afternoon, July 8, 2002 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born June 1, 1944 in White Hall, the son of Andrew E. “Bob”
and Floreca M. Craddock Stewart.
He married Meleta K. Hicks on Sept. 20, 1964 in Patterson and she
survives.
He is also survived by two sons, Jonathon and Ryne Stewart, both of
White Hall; three daughters, Kimberly Hammond of El Dorado; Angela
Church and Erin Stewart, both of Harrisburg; six grandchildren; four
brothers, Robert L. Stewart of White Hall; Richard L. Stewart of Portage,
Wisconsin; Thomas Stewart of White Hall; and James D. Stewart of
Michigan; and one sister, Gertie Ruyle of Springfield. He was preceded in
death by two sons, Jeffrey and Christopher and one granddaughter.
Mr. Stewart retired from the U.S. Post Office as a rural mail carrier in
1992. He operated an antique store in White Hall for several years. He
enjoyed auctions and flea markets. He attended the Wilmington Baptist
Church in Patterson.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 11, 2002 at
the Wilmington Baptist Church in Patterson with burial at the Pine Tree
Cemetery near Patterson. The family will meet friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m.
Wednesday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall. Memorials
are suggested to Pine Tree Cemetery.

Mrs. Hazel Stickman (Pyle)
Hazel Stickman, age 105, of Griggsville, Ill. died Saturday evening (April 27, 2002) at Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield, Ill..
She was born January 15, 1897 in Griggsville Township, daughter of the late Frederick C. and Margaret Emry Pyle.
She married Charles H. Stickman, Sr. on July 5, 1924 in Griggsville, Ill. and he preceded her in death.
Surviving is one daughter, Mary Margaret Myers and husband Ralph of Griggsville, Ill.; two sons, Charles H. Stickman, Jr. and Richard Stickman and wife Gail both of Griggsville, Ill.; six grandchildren, Jeanette Six of Green ville, South Carolina, David Myers and wife Julie, Dan Myers, and Sharon Stickman all of Griggsville, Ill., Ann Stickman of LaGrange, Ill. and Lori Stickman of Jacksonville, Ill.; four great-grandchildren, Justin Six and wife Kristin of Quincy, Ill., Jessica Six of Green ville, South Carolina, and Audrey and Ben Myers both of Griggsville, Ill.; and one great-great granddaughter, Leah Six of Quincy, Ill..
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a sister, Helen Pyle; and a granddaughter, Mary C. Stickman.
Mrs. Stickman was a 1916 graduate of Griggsville High School, and also was a graduate of the Western Illinois Teacher’s College in Macomb, Ill.. She was a school teacher in many area schools. She was a member of the Griggsville United Methodist Church where she had the distinction of being the oldest member and also the longest member of the congregation. She also belonged to the Ladies Needle Craft Club and the church.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday (May 1, 2002) at the Griggsville United Methodist Church in Griggsville, Ill. with Rev. David Schultz officiating. Burial will be in the Griggsville Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Ill. where family will meet with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Griggsville United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Geneva J. Stinebaker (Wendling)
Geneva J. Stinebaker, age 87, of North Adams Home in Mendon, Ill. and formerly of Chambersburg, Ill. died 2:45 a.m. Wednesday (May 1, 2002) in the home.
She was born June 26, 1915 in Perry, Ill. daughter of Victor and Mary Leah Dwyer Wendling.
She married Verne Stinebaker on April 16, 1938 in Pittsfield, Ill. and he preceded her in death on July 13, 1985.
Surviving are two daughters, Sonjie Kaye DeHart and husband Clayton of Barry, Ill. and Ginger S. Rogers and husband Robert of Rural Loraine; a granddaughter, Peggy Elizabeth Blickhan of Taichung, Taiwan; her twin brother, Charles Wendling and his wife Grace of Perry, Ill.; a faithful friend, Irene Sims of Versailles, Ill.; and many family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Ira Wendling and his wife Beatrice.
Geneva attended Perry Springs School and was a 1932 graduate of Perry High School in Perry, Ill.. She was a member of the Chambersburg Christian Church, the Senior Saints, Perry Home Extension and the former Federated Women’s Club. She enjoyed her flower garden, traveling, crocheting, embroidering and playing piano.
Geneva was a homemaker and helped her husband on their family farm. Her true calling was that of wife and mother. She was devoted to her family and was a wonderful person.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday (May 4, 2002) at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Ill. with Roger Ham officiating. Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery in Perry, Ill.. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel. Memorials may be made to Perry Cemetery Association or Blessing Hospice.

Mr. Samuel R. Strawn
Samuel R. Strawn, 84, of Monticello, and formerly of Jacksonville, died Wednesday evening, August 14, 2002 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy. He was born on June 22, 1918 at Strawn’s Crossing, the son of Robinson “Robin E.” and Lillian Cleary Strawn. He married Leona Gibson on February 1, 1954 at Gulfport, Mississippi, and she survives. He is also survived by one brother, George Marcus (wife, Mildred) Strawn of Jacksonville, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Strawn served in the United States Army during World War II, and was Chief Signal Officer at Chanute Field. He installed the first radar ever to be put into airplanes for the military. He was later employed with the United States Government in New Jersey. Following his retirement, he moved to Monticello and worked as a television repairman for Armsworth Appliance. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and was a past member of Jacksonville Elks Club #682. He was a member of Hebron Methodist Church. Graveside services will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, August 17, 2002 at Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Illinois Veterans Home at Quincy. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
