Mrs. Grace Strubinger (Brickner)
Grace Strubinger, age 92, of St. Louis, Mo. died September 23, 2002 in St. Louis, Mo. She was born February 20, 1910 in Poplar Bluff, Mo. daughter of the late Charles P. and Kathryn Brickner Kirkendoll. She married Bert Strubinger in 1934 in Hot Springs, Arkansas and he preceded her in death on April 30, 1979. Surviving is one daughter, Patricia Ann Korn of Creve Coeur, Mo; two sons, Bert E. Strubinger II of St. Louis, Mo. and Edwyn T. Strubinger and wife Rebecca of Colombia, Mo.; five grandchildren, Peter Oberheide of Austin, Texas and Thomas Oberheide of Dillon, Colorado, Matthew Korn of Austin, Texas, Megan Pflug of Brooklyn, New York and Emily Strubinger of Columbia, Mo; and one sister Mary Loos of Cape Girardeau, Mo. She was preceded in death by parents; husband; and one brother. Grace was a graduate of Southwest Missouri State and taught P.E. at Normandy High School in St. Louis, Mo. She was active in tennis, badminton, and contract bridge and was the 1941 Greater St. Louis indoor badminton women’s doubles champion. Private services will be held Saturday (September 28, 2002) at the Taylor-Martin Cemetery near El Dara, Ill. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Pike County Animal Shelter c/o the funeral home. Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill. is in charge of arrangements.

Charles J. Sturgeon
Charles J. Sturgeon, 67, of Alsey, passed away Friday morning (January 4, 2002) at Passavant Area Hospital.
He was born June 22, 1934 in Green e County the son of the late Cecil T. and Opal Dorks Sturgeon.
He married Peggy Gibbs August 21, 1959 in Winchester.
Mr. Sturgeon attended Literberry School. He was a US Army Veteran. He had worked at the former Kraft Foods as a machine operator for 19 years. He was a member of Barrow Baptist Church and he had served on the Alsey Town Board.
He loved woodworking and carpentry. He was well known in the area for having the largest outdoor Christmas display in Alsey.
He also enjoyed bowling, painting and helping with the annual Burgoo.
Surviving is his wife Peggy at home. A son Rodney (wife Connie) Sturgeon of Alsey, 2 daughters Bronya (husband Scott) Sanders of Glasgow, and Birdie Sturgeon of Alsey. 4 grandchildren. 2 brothers Dale (wife Pat) Sturgeon of Waterloo, Iowa, Kenny (wife Linda) Sturgeon of White Hall, 2 sisters, Joyce (husband Don) Jones of Alsey, and Judy (husband Greg) Prewitt of Jacksonville.
He was preceded in death by a grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday (January 8, 2002) at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, south of Alsey.
Burial will be in Bowers Cemetery, east of Alsey where military graveside rites will be conducted.
Friends may call after 3:00 PM Monday at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Building Fund at Barrow Baptist Church.

Mrs. Margaret E. Sullivan (Beadles)
Margaret Ellen Strawn Wade Sullivan, 85, of Alexander died Wednesday morning, May 15, 2002 at her residence. She was born on November 3, 1916 in Prentice the daughter of Thomas G. and Stella Green walt Beadles. She married William Strawn in the mid 1930’s and he preceded her in death. She married Lee Wad and he also preceded her in death. She later married Joseph Sullivan on January 27, 1995 in California and he survives at Alexander.
She is also survived by one step-son, Bernard (wife, Loretta) Sullivan of Tennessee; one step-daughter, Norma (husband, Jerry) McDonald of Macomb; several step-grandchildren and step-greatgrandchildren; one brother, Robert Byron (wife, Nancy) Beadles of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilbur and John Paul.
Mrs. Sullivan was employed with S.S. Kresge’s, later K Mart, for over 35 years, beginning in the Chicago area and later in Springfield. She was a member of the Alexander United Methodist Church at Alexander, and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of AmVet Auxiliary #100, Alexander Women’s Club, and Order of Eastern Star, Wilbur Chapter #358 in Jacksonville. She sang with the Villatones and Sweet Adelines.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2002 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Church of the Visitation in Alexander, or the donor’s choice.

Mr. John R. Sullivan
John R. Sullivan, age 91, of Roodhouse, died Sunday morning, July 7,
2002 at the White Hall Multicare Center in White Hall.
He was born April 18, 1911 in Jalappa, the son of John Willis and
Donna Belle Whitlock Sullivan.
He married Eva L. Ferguson on Oct. 16, 1929 in Jerseyville and she
preceded him in death on May 18, 1983.
He is survived by three daughters, Rita Jane (husband, Richard) King
of Cincinnati, Ohio; Jo Ann (husband, Victor) Cassano of Flower Mound,
Texas and Jane (husband, Gary) Cregmile of Rapid City, South Dakota; five
grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one
son, John Anderson Sullivan; one grandchild; and three sisters, Ruth, Alice
and Velma.
Mr. Sullivan was a painter and decorator in the Roodhouse area. He
was a member of the former Roodhouse Christian Church.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at
the Union Cemetery near Green field. Memorials are suggested to the Union
Cemetery. The Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Roodhouse is in charge of
arrangements.

Mr. Bryan W. Summers
Bryan W. Summers, age 83, of El Dara, Ill. died early Saturday morning (April 13, 2002) at Pittsfield HealthCare Center in Pittsfield, Ill.
He was born January 15, 1919 in Smithville, Tenn. son of the late Bryan Charles and Luella Bond Summers.
He married Charlotte M. Haupt on December 6, 1958 in Detroit, Michigan and she survives.
Also surviving is a sister, Noreen Anderson of Sparta, Tenn.; a half-sister, Janette James of Smithville, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Joden Redman of Smithville, Tenn.; two nephews and three nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jess Lee Summers and Noel Summers; and one sister in infancy.
He was a past employee of Chrysler Corporation in Trenton, Michigan retiring in 1973 and moving to Pike County, Ill. in 1980. He was a W.W. II veteran serving in the Army.
He enjoyed traveling and camping.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday (April 16, 2002) at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill.. Burial will be in Pittsfield West Cemetery where graveside military rites will be conducted by the Pittsfield American Legion Post # 152. Friends may call one hour prior to services Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Mrs. Irene Swain (Barnes)
Irene Swain, 80, of Alexander, died Sunday evening, September 15, 2002, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born on September 21, 1921 in Wainwright, Oklahoma, the daughter of Richard Icem and Mabel Lavina Whitehead Barnes. She married Kenneth Foster Swain on December 12, 1941, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and he preceded her in death on November 20, 1997. She is survived by one daughter, Joyce Gotschall-Swain of Alexander; one son, Donald (wife, Mary) Swain of Jacksonville; three grandchildren; one sister, Mickey (husband, Archie) Collins of Warner, Oklahoma; and one brother, Bill (wife, Shelba Jean) Barnes of Okmulgee, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by one sister, Gladys Badgwell, and two brothers, Gene Barnes (surviving wife Della of San Antonio, Texas), and Richard Icem Barnes, Jr. Mrs. Swain worked as a bookkeeper for Swain Brothers Trucking. She was leader of the Berea 4-H Club and a member of the Berea Home Bureau, and enjoyed gardening. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 21. 2002 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Berea Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Berea Cemetery.

Mrs. Jennie Corrine Swarringim (Blackketter)
Jennie Corrine Swarringim, age 99, of White Hall, died early Thursday morning, Aug. 8, 2002 at the White Hall Multicare Center in White Hall. She was born Dec. 20, 1902 in Nebo, the daughter of John Henry and Mellie Lodema Hobbs Blackketter. She married Charles Henry Swarringim on Dec. 22, 1919 and he preceded her in death on Jun3 25, 1970. She is survived by one daughter, Vivian (husband, Gherald) Ross of White Hall; one grandson, Danny L. (wife, Jerrie) Boirum of Grafton, who lived with her in her home for many years; three great grandchildren, Mindy (husband, Kelle) Slough of Olathe, KS; Gina (husband, Shawn) Hagen of Edwardsville and Christy Reynolds of Springfield; six great-great grandchildren, Lauren, Kelsey & Makenzie Slough; Cole and Trey Hagen and Jared Reynolds. Mrs. Swarringim was a longtime member and deaconess of the White Hall First Baptist Church, a member of the Daughters of Faith Sunday School class, a Sunday School teacher in the junior department for many years and was a faithful worker in the church in many capacities. She was also a member of the Golden Era Club and a social member of the R.N.A. She was employed for several years at the former White Hall Hospital until her retirement in 1969. She enjoyed being with her family, quilting, cooking and her flowers. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002 at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial at the White Hall Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 12:00-2:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Boyd Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Miriam A. Sweeney (Ledbetter)
Miriam A. Sweeney, 82, of Jacksonville died Friday afternoon, March 15, 2002 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born on July 17, 1919 in McLanesboro the daughter of Dwight James and Laurabelle Braden Ledbetter. She married Earl G. Sweeney on September 5, 1942 in Reno, Nevada and he preceded her in death in September of 1971.
Mrs. Sweeney is survived by one son, Richard Sweeney of Jacksonville; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, James D. Ledbetter.
Mrs. Sweeney was a homemaker and had worked at Jacksonville Supply Company in the 1950’s and 60’s. She was an avid bowler and member of the Women’s Bowling Association and the Jacksonville Emblem Club; and enjoyed walking and watching the Lawrence Welk Show. Mrs. Sweeney was of the Baptist faith.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2002 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, south of Jacksonville. Friends may call after 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A Jacksonville Emblem Club service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials are suggested to the Jacksonville Emblem Club or the Elks Little League Program.

Lena M. Taylor (Goodman)
Lena M. Taylor, 88, of Jerseyville died at 10 P.M. on Tuesday April 30, 2002
at the Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville.
Born in Eldred on Sept. 23, 1913 she was the daughter of the late John and
Sarah Carroll Goodman.
On Jan. 14, 1933 she married Lawrence Ray Taylor in Carrollton and he
preceded her in death on August 13, 1986. Surviving are 2 daughters: Leona
Hillis of Jerseyville and Janis Taulman of Jerseyville, a son and
daughter-in-law: Al Wayne and Carolyn Taylor of Alton, 15 grandchildren,
26 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren, a sister Bertha
Anderson also survives.
She was preceded in death by 2 sons: Leonard Ray and Raymond Daniel
Taylor and 5 brothers: Wesley, Russell, Frank, Harold and Raymond
Goodman.
Mrs. Taylor was a devout Christian and will be sadly missed by family
and friends.
Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. on Friday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral
Home in Carrollton where services will be held on Sat. at 10 A.M. with
burial to follow in the Carrollton City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to
the Green wood Manor West Nursing Home.

Mrs. Gladys Marie Taylor (Strubbe)
Gladys Marie Taylor, 81, of Jacksonville, died Friday morning, December 13, 2002, at the Transitional Care Unit at Passavant Hospital. She was born on February 17, 1921, in Scott County near Merritt, the daughter of Henry J. and Lena Meyer Strubbe. She married Wilbur C. Tappenbeck on April 5, 1953 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and he preceded her in death on November 23, 1979. She married Robert W. Taylor on January 30, 1982 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and he survives. She is also survived by one son, Terry L. Tappenbeck of Springfield; one daughter, Naydene (husband, Roger) Nergenah of Chapin; four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward Strubbe, Herbert Strubbe, and Harold Strubbe. Mrs. Taylor was a cook for the Triopia School District for many years. She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church near Chapin, where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and was a member of the Mary Martha Circle. She enjoyed working with flowers, doing floral arrangements for the church and floriculture at the Morgan County Fair. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 16, 2002 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church near Chapin with burial at Grace Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 15, 2002 at the Williamson Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Harry L. Taylor
Harry L. Taylor, 83, of Winchester passed away Thursday morning (November 14, 2002) At St. Johns Hospital in Springfield. He was born April 20, 1919 near Roodhouse the son of John P. and Mabel Day Taylor. He married Jewel M. “Judy” Pile November 7, 1942 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death April 8, 1999. Also preceding him was a brother Basil Taylor and 2 sisters Ruby Watrip and Nellie Parker. Mr. Taylor was a Line Foreman for Illinois Rural Electric for 43 years. After retirement he worked for Coonrod Funeral Home and Marshall Chevrolet. He was a member of the 1st Baptist Church in Winchester where he was very active. He was a US Army Veteran of World War 2 serving in the west pacific and was a member of the Winchester American Legion. Mr. Taylor liked to golf and was an avid bowler for many years. He was admitted to the Illinois Bowling Hall of Fame in April 2002. Survivors include his son Steven Bruce (wife Vienna) Taylor of Tulsa, Oklahoma, 2 grandsons Shane (wife Misty) Taylor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Shanen (wife Kara) Taylor of Kansas City, Missouri, a great grandson Skyler Brian Taylor and a special friend Eleanor Hill of rural Jacksonville. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday (November 17, 2002) at the 1st Baptist Church in Winchester. Burial will be in the Winchester City Cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted. Friends may call after 3:00 PM Saturday at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. Memorial contributions can be made to Alzheimer's research or to the 1st Baptist Church.

Mr. Steven Reynolds Taylor
Stephen “Steve” Reynolds Taylor, 15, of Hettick, IL died Thursday, October 17, 2002 at his home in Hettick. He was born April 7, 1987 in Springfield, Illinois , the son of Ralph Reynolds Jr. and Pamela Elaine Bregenzer Taylor. Surviving are his parents, 1 brother; Jeremiah Edward (Christy) Taylor of Ocean Grove, N.J.; 1 sister; Nichole Cozette (Michael) Arnett of Cottage Hills, Illinois; 1 paternal grandmother; Ollie Cozette Taylor of Virden, Illinois; maternal grandparents; Edward and Bonnie Bregenzer of Moro, Illinois. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Kristina and Colette Taylor ; 1 paternal grandfather, Ralph Reynolds Taylor Sr.; and 1 maternal grandmother, Oleta Mae Bregenzer. He was a student at Northwestern High School, where he was a Sophomore. He was a member of the Northwestern High School Marching Band, Jazz Band, and Pep Band.Member of the Boy Scouts of America, and Who’s Who Among American High School Students. He was a drummer for Zero Tolerance, punk band. and a guitarist for other bands. He played baseball and was a sponsored skateboarder. The last two summers he worked for Conrady Backwoods Berry Farm . He was member of Gilead Baptist Church. Graveside services will be held at 1pm, Sunday, October 20, 2002 at the Hettick Cemetery in Hettick. Family will meet friends from 2pm to 7pm, Saturday, October 19, 2002 at the Stults-Neece Funeral Home in Palmyra. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Kurt E. Templin
Kurt E. Templin, 37, of Franklin, and formerly of Murrayville; died early Wednesday morning, June 5, 2002, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident east of Jacksonville. He was born on November 24, 1964 in Jacksonville the son of Kenneth E. and Katherine Lippert Templin.
He is survived by his fiancé, Cheryl A. Dawdy of Franklin, to whom he was to be married next Friday, June 14th; one daughter, Jami Marie Craigmiles of Haughton, Louisiana; and two step-daughters, Ashley and Samantha Crow of Franklin; one brother, Kris (fiancé, Becky Mathis) Templin of Jacksonville; two sisters, Kathy (husband, David) Blanchette and Karyn (husband, Rusty) Hicks, both of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Templin was a correction officer for the State of Illinois Department of Corrections in Jacksonville for the past nine years. He was employed earlier at Colorcraft/Qualex in Jacksonville. He was a 1982 graduate of Routt High School and had been a member of the Church of Our Saviour. He enjoyed riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Kurt was loved by all and will be sadly missed.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, 2002 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Calvary Cemetery in Jacksonville. Friends may call after 12 Noon on Saturday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

Kristine M. Tepen (Keller)
Kristine M. Tepen, 32, of Carrollton died on Friday at 11:15 A.M. at Boyd
Memorial Hospital in Carrollton.
Born in Carrollton on July 3, 1969 she was the daughter of the late Roger
“Curt” Keller and Margaret Keller Camerer of Eldred.
She married Phillip Tepen on Nov. 26, 1994 in Carrollton and he
survives. Also surviving besides her husband and mother are a step-father
Charles Camerer, a sister Melissa (husband Shane) Sevier of Detroit, Il.,
a niece and nephew, her maternal grandmother Mary Vestel Montgomery of
Paragould, Ark., step-sisters: Debra (Charles) Helton of Carrollton and Sue
(Mike) Robinson of Murrayville.
Kris was employed at the Tri-County FS in Carrollton and had worked
at the Carrollton Bank for 12 years. She was a 1987 graduate of Carrollton
High School and member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Carrollton. She
was this years Honorary Chairman for the Green e Co. Relay for Life. She
will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. on Sunday at the Airsman-Hires
Funeral Home in Carrollton. Prayer service will be at 6 P.M. Funeral Mass
will be celebrated on Monday at St. John’s Catholic Church with burial to
follow in the church cemetery. Memorials are to Green e Co. Health Dept.,
Relay for Life, Blessing Hospice of Green e Co., or St. John’s School/Church.

Mr. Gene TerHark
Gene TerHark, 66, of South Jacksonville, died Thursday morning, August 15, 2002 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He was born on November 17, 1935 in Freeport, the son of Thomas and Mildred Daughenbaugh TerHark. He married Cheryl Andress on September 20, 1959 in Joy, and she survives. He is also survived by one son, Lee (wife, Dana) TerHark of Alton; one daughter, Kelly TerHark of Decatur, and one brother, Ron (wife, Cleta) TerHark of Franklin, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. TerHark retired from the Jacksonville Developmental Center in Jacksonville in 1991. He was a member of the Jacksonville Sportsman’s Club and enjoyed playing cards, fishing, water sports, and spending his summers with family at Matanzas Beach. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2002 at the Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Children’s Miracle Network, Jacksonville Sportsman’s Club, or Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Mr. Roy D. Tholen
Roy D. Tholen, 77, of South Jacksonville, died Tuesday evening, October 22, 2002 at his residence. He was born on January 22, 1925 in Jacksonville, the son of Roy D. Tholen, Sr. and Loretta Shork Tholen. He married Mary H. Ring on November 28, 1944 in Brooklyn, New York, and she survives. He is also survived by three sons, Dan (wife, Pegge) Tholen of Ft. Worth, Texas, Thomas (wife, Debi) Tholen of Jacksonville, and Chuck (fiancé, Polly Fisk) Tholen of Garland, Texas; one daughter, Joan (husband, Les) Lunsmann of McHenry; five grandchildren, one step-grandchild; and one sister, Barbara Slaby of Pinnellas Park, Florida. He was preceded in death by one brother, John J. Tholen (surviving wife Sandralee of Lake Mills, Wisconsin), and one infant grandson. Mr. Tholen was a security officer with the State of Illinois before retiring. He had been a co-owner and operator of the Tholen and Brown Marathon Station at the corner of Morton and Diamond for many years. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, stationed in the Canal Zone of Panama. Mr. Tholen was a member of the Church of Our Saviour, Knights of Columbus, and was an avid pinochle player. He enjoyed reading western novels, and had completed 207 of the 215 Louis L’Amour novels. Mr. Tholen loved spending time with his grandkids. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 26, 2002 at the Church of Our Saviour with burial at Calvary Cemetery in Jacksonville. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Friday at the Williamson Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 4 to 6 p.m., at which time a prayer service will be held. Memorials are suggested to Hospice Care of Central Illinois, Jacksonville Branch; or the Church of Our Saviour.
