Mr. Ray Edward Goolsby
Ray Edward Goolsby, 58, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday afternoon, May 6, 2003, in Bloomington. He was born August 17, 1944 in Barrow, the son of Harry L. and Matilda Newby Goolsby. He married Sallie Mickens and she survives. He is also survived by two sons, Christopher Goolsby and Matthew Goolsby, both of Pekin; one daughter, Joy E. (husband, Dale) Parker of Pekin; three step-daughters, Salina M. (husband, Butch) Shaw of Richmond, Virginia, Christina Mickens of Bloomington, and Shanita Mickens of Arenzville; his mother, Matilda Glossop of Jacksonville; eight grandchildren, Trevor, Margaret, Dale, Kevonna, Deon, Michael, Kiona, and Courtney; and one brother, Charles (wife, Martha) Goolsby of Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by his father. Mr. Goolsby worked at Caterpillar in Peoria for over 30 years, prior to retiring. He was a member of the Bloomington Moose Lodge and Elks Lodge. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2003, at the Williamson Funeral Home, with burial at East Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to his children’s education fund.

Judy B. Grady (Evans)
Judy B. Grady, 37, of Winchester passed away early Tuesday morning (March 4, 2003) at Skyview Terrace in Jacksonville. She was born December 20, 1965 in Jacksonville the daughter of Gordon M. and Mary Ann Havens Evans. She married James “Ted” Grady December 31, 1997 in Winchester. Judy was a 1984 graduate of Winchester High School. She was very active in sports in school. She was the State Discus Champion in 1984 and her record stood for 17 years. She attended Illinois College. She loved working with children; She was sponsor for the Winchester Grade School Pomers and had coached Little League Softball. She worked for Cingular Wireless in Springfield. She was a Petty Officer 3 E4 in the US Navy Reserve. Survivors include her husband at home. Her children, Luke Lindholm of Yorkville, Brianna Sanders of Tamoroa, Shailee Grady and Theo Grady at home. Her father Gordon Evans of Winchester, a brother Jeffrey (wife Michelle) Evans of Ft. Knox, Kentucky, 3 sisters Bonnie (husband John) Scoggins of El Paso, Texas, Beckie (husband Andy) Weder and Barbara (husband Justin) McGee both of Winchester. Several nieces nephews, aunts uncles and cousins. Preceding her in death was her mother Mary Ann Evans in 2001. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM Friday (March 7, 2003) at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester. Burial will be in the Winchester City Cemetery where military rites will be conducted. Friends may call after 4:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. Memorial contributions can be made to an education fund for her children at 1st State Bank in Winchester.

Mr. H. Ronald Gregory
H. Ronald Gregory, 66, of Lynnville, died Thursday evening, May 8, 2003, at his residence. He was born July 11, 1936 in Jacksonville, the son of Harold and Irene Todd Gregory. He married Shirley Myers on June 8, 1955 in Winchester and she survives. He is survived by one son, David L. (fiancé, Barbara Bell) Gregory of Lynnville; his mother, Irene Gregory of Lynnville; three brothers, Robert Gregory of Lynnville, Phillip Gregory and James Michael (wife, Joyce) Gregory of Lowder; two sisters, Beverly (husband, Ron) Hoffstadt of Jacksonville and Mary Katherine Heck of Barry, his step-mother, Vera Gregory of Lowder, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Gregory was a stock clerk at Ace Hardware in Jacksonville for 37 years. Before that, he was employed at Walgreen’s downtown. He loved gardening and sold produce at the farmer’s market. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, pets, and all types of wildlife. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 12, 2003, at Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. Friends may call after 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Williamson Funeral Home, where the family will meet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Lynnville Christian Church or Hospice Care of Central Illinois, Jacksonville Branch.

Mrs. Irene Baker Griffin
Irene Baker Griffin, 91, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday morning, May 27, 2003, at Barton W. Stone Christian Home in Jacksonville. She was born October 6, 1911, in Orleans, the daughter of Thomas Elmer and Elva Marie McQuown Griffin. She married Joseph Baker April 14, 1934 in Chapin, and he preceded her in death June 9, 1982. She married John Griffin December 19, 1992 in Chapin and he preceded her in death in October of 1993. She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Wolke of Concord and Beverly (husband, Martin) Werries of Chapin; eight grandchildren, seventeen great-granchildren; and four great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, George Russell Griffin. Mrs. Griffin was a clerk at the J.C. Penney store on the Jacksonville square. She was a member of Chapin Christian Church, Sunbeam Class, and Pastor Helpers, and served as church organist for 25 years. She was a member of the Organ Society of Jacksonville and the Rebekah Lodge. She was an avid fisherman and enjoyed gardening, and cooking. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2003 at the Williamson Funeral Home, with burial at Chapin Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Chapin Christian Church or Barton W. Stone Christian Home.

Mr. Paul Clark Grimmett
Paul Clark Grimmett, 65, of Jacksonville, formerly of Palmyra, died Saturday, May 10, 2002 at Skyview Terrace in Jacksonville. He was born November, 18, 1937 the son of Paul James and Florence Evelyn Brown Grimmett in Palmyra, Illinois. He was a long-time truck driver; and owned various produce businesses in Texas. He was a member of the Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church in Jacksonville. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Jacksonville and the AARP. Greatest of all he loved and was loved by his boys, his family and many friends. He is survived by 3 sons; Randy Grimmett, of Cahokia, Illinois; Roger (Brenda) Grimmett of Quincy, Illinois; Greg Grimmett of Nashville, Tennessee; 2 sisters, Connie Livingway of Scottsdale, Arizona; Linda McNeely of Waverly, Illinois; and 5 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 1 sister; Ramona Mattera. Funeral services will be at 7pm, Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at the Neece Funeral Home in Waverly, Illinois. Family will meet friends from 4pm to 7pm at the funeral Home on Wednesday, followed by cremation. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Helen Alice Griswold (Gilmore)
Helen Alice Griswold, age 103, of White Hall, died Monday afternoon, April 7, 2003 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. She was born October 4, 1899 at Green field, the daughter of George and Alice Massey Gilmore. She married Ralph R. Griswold March 29, 1923 in Carrollton and he preceded her in death on October 15, 1979. She is survived by two grandchildren, Robert Michael Carter of Godfrey, and Debbie Sue Nolan of Alton, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Suzanne Carter and Sally Sue Griswold, five brothers and three sisters. Mrs. Griswold had worked as a cook at the White Hall Hospital and was a homemaker. She was a member of the White Hall Presbyterian Church. Memorial services will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, April 11, 2003 at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall. The family will meet friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Interment will be in the White Hall Cemetery.

Herschel "Hack" Hackley
Herschel “Hack” Hackley,76, of LaPlace, La. formerly of Carrollton, died on Tuesday April 8, 2003 in LaPlace. Surviving are his wife the former Mary Daum, several nephews and nieces including: Andy, Karen, Jennifer and Julie Daum of Rockbridge, Chris, Kathy, Ann and Mary Daum of Franklin, Karl and Coleen Daum of Jacksonville and Ruth Ann Delmore of Florida. He was a native of Carrollton and had lived in LaPlace, La. for over twenty years. Hack will be deeply missed and leaves behind not only his family but a large number of friends in whose mind and hearts will alway carry his memories. Visitation and funeral services were held in Louisana and graveside rites are schedule for Tuesday April 15, 2003 at 2 P.M. at the Carrollton City Cemetery. Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Harold Dean Haley
Harold Dean Haley, 66, of Jacksonville died Friday evening, March 7, 2003 at his residence. He was born July 25, 1936 in Jacksonville the son of Warren Kenneth and Wahneitta Viola Keirl Haley. He married Shirley Ann Fortney on June 5, 1954 in Palmyra, Missouri and she survives. He is also survived by two sons, Harold Lee (Fiance’, Kimmie Scott) Haley of Jacksonville and Billy Dean (wife, Ruth Ann) Haley of St. Louis; two daughters, Deborah (husband, Terry) Hebenstreit of St. Louis and Lisa (husband, Tim) Kesinger of Argyle, New York; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Warren (wife, Effie) Haley of Jacksonville and one sister, Sharon (husband, Floyd) Virgin of Manchester. He was preceded in death by one brother Earl LeRoy Haley. Mr. Haley had worked as an optician and also for the City of Jacksonville. He was a member of the Camper’s Club at Pioneer Point and enjoyed bowling. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 10, 2003 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Jacksonville East Cemetery. Friends may call after 1 on Sunday with the family to meet friends from 3-5. Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice.

Mrs. Kay Ann Hall (Dietz)
Kay Ann Hall, 60, of Jacksonville and formerly of Meredosia died early Friday morning, January 17, 2003 at Passavant Area Hospital. She was born on November 8, 1942 in Jacksonville the daughter of Walter Lewis and Lois Virginia Frost Dietz. She married William “Buck” Hall and he preceded her in death. She is survived by her mother of Jacksonville; two brothers, John (wife, Bev) Dietz of Murrayville and Joe Dietz of Jacksonville; one sister, Bonnie Dietz of Springfield; two nieces and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her father. Mrs. Hall had worked at the Jacksonville Developmental Center where she had worked in the activities department. She had also been involved in Special Olympics there. She retired in November of 2002 after 40 years of service. She had also been a paramedic for the Meredosia Rescue squad for several years. She enjoyed sewing, fishing, gardening and crafts. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2003 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Oakland Cemetery in Meredosia. Friends may call after 1 p.m. on Sunday where the family will meet friends from 4-7 at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Special Olympics at Jacksonville Developmental Center.

Mrs. Martha Hume Hapke
Martha Hume Hapke, 93, of O’Fallon, Missouri, died Sunday morning, February 16, 2003, at Garden View Care Center in O’Fallon. She was born January 25, 1910, in Mt. Sterling, the daughter of John and Nellie Newinham Hume. She married Roy Palmer Hapke in 1942, and he preceded her in death on September 16, 1970. She is survived by two sons, Jon (wife, Carol) Hapke of Jacksonville and Marc (wife, Monjou) Hapke of Omaha, Nebraska; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Josef. Mrs. Hapke was a homemaker and owner of Morgan County Abstract Company in Jacksonville until 1993. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 21, 2003 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Jacksonville. Interment will be at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jerry L. Hardwick
Jerry L. Hardwick, age 57, of White Hall, died Tuesday evening, May 13, 2003 at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. He was born July 5, 1945 , the son of Elmer and Jessie Lucille Bushnell Hardwick. He is survived by three daughters, Jessie Allen, Trisha Gray and Tina Anthony, all of Roodhouse; two sons, Jerry Hardwick of Jerseyville and Michael Hardwick of Roodhouse; eight grandchildren; two brothers, John Hardwick and James Hardwick, both of Hillview; three sisters, Wanda Housmann of Hillview, Wilma Jean Schutz and Peggy DeSha, both of White Hall and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Hardwick and one sister, Bonnie Henson. Mr. Hardwick worked at Mobil Chemical in Jacksonville for many years and served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and was of the Baptist faith. Private services will be held. The Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs Ruth L. Harris (Crawford)
Ruth L. Harris, 72, of Waverly, IL. died Wednesday, January 15, 2003 in her home in Waverly. She was born September 8, 1930, in Springfield, IL a daughter of William J. and Dorothy Woods Crawford. She married Robert Baker Harris on March 22, 1952 in Jacksonville, IL. and he preceded her in death on December 13, 1998. Surviving are one son: Robert (wife Karen) Harris of Waverly; two daughters: Rhonda (husband Dave) Rhodes of Loami, IL; Rita (husband Danne) Lathrom of Springfield; one sister Marie Ross of Waverly; three grandchildren and one great grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband. She was a 4-H leader for several years, and attended the Congregational Church. Graveside services will be held at 2:00pm Monday, January 20, 2002 in Waverly East Cemetery. Burial will be in Waverly East Cemetery.

Mrs. Florence H. Hartman (Roach)
Florence H. Hartman, 97, of Waverly, Illinois, died, Sunday, January 19, 2003 at Prairie Village Health Care Center in Jacksonville, Illinois. She was born, March 13, 1905 in Hamburg, Illinois, the daughter of Emmett Franklin and Mary Melvina Sutton Roach. She married Albert Francis Hartman July 22, 1922. He preceded her in death on January 14, 1976. Mrs. Hartman worked at Allis-Chalmers during World War II. She was a homemaker, and worked at Hartman Gas and Appliance. She also hung wallpaper for many years. She was a member of the Waverly American Legion Auxilary #262 for over fifty years and a member of a Bunco Club for many years. She was a member of the Mozier Christian Church. She is survived by; 2 sons, Loren T. “Skinner” Hartman of Waverly, Illinois; Ruben O. “Frog” Hartman of Florida; 1 brother, Owen F. Roach(Mildred) of Hamburg, Illinois; 5 grandchildren ; 8 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by; 1 son, Robert L. Hartman, 1 half sister, Sadie L. Sidwell Baugh; 3 sisters, Alice M. Hartman, Laura V. Roach who died as a child; Hazel L. Roach who died in infancy; and 1 brother, John Paul Roach. Funeral services will be at 10 am, Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at the Neece Funeral Home in Waverly, Illinois. Family will meet friends from 6pm to 8pm, Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Poor Cemetery in Baytown, Illinois. Memorials are suggested to the Waverly American Legion Awning Fund.

Bessie B. Hedrick (Fisher)
Bessie B. Hedrick, 76, of Carrollton died on Wednesday evening April 30, 2003 at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield. born in Spanky, Il. On April 16, 1927 she was the daughter of the late Walter and Bertha Goans Fisher. She married Eddie Hedrick in June of 1948 and he preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 1989. Surviving are 2 daughters: Martha Pruiett of White Hall and Marion Leach of Springfield, a son Dennis Fisher of Henderson, Nev., 16 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, a sister Clara Scoggins of Carrollton. She was preceded in death by a son Terry Hedrick, 2 brothers: Frank and John Fisher and a sister Alma Ligon. Mrs. Hedrick was a homemaker and member of Carrollton First Baptist Church. She also was a member of the 50-50 Sunday School Class of the church. Visitation will be from 5-8 P.M. on Friday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Services will be held on Saturday at 2 P.M. at the Carrollton First Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Carrollton City Cemetery. Memorials are mentioned to 50-50 Sunday School Class.

Annette M. Heineman (Webel)
Annette M. (Webel) Heineman, 74, of Omaha, NE, passed away Friday March 28, 2003 at Hospice House in Omaha. She was born March 5, 1929 in Quincy the daughter of Guy and Marie Mullins Webel. Surviving are 3 daughters, Linda (husband Duane) Jazynka, Susan Ator both of Omaha, NE, Denise (husband Mike) Benson of Elkhorn, NE; a son Douglas Heineman of Centertown, MO; 3 sisters Marjorie (husband Jack) Riley of Champaign, IL and Marilyn (husband Ted) Sheldon and Roberta (husband Charles) Rhoades both of Perry, IL; 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday (April 2, 2003) at the Hebron Cemetery near Mt. Sterling. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am until 2:00 PM Wednesday at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville. Memorial contributions can be made to the Hebron Cemetery or to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Michael "Whitey" Dean Henson
Michael Dean “Whitey” Henson, 44, of Waverly, IL. died Thursday, January 9, 2003 in Waverly. He was born February 4, 1958 in Joliet, IL, a son of James O. Henson of Waverly, and Frances Kathleen Harney Wells. of Jacksonville, IL. surviving with the parents are two daughters: Mikia Marie Henson and Megan Gail Henson both of Waverly. Also surviving are three brothers: Thomas James (wife Gretchen) Henson of Divernon, IL; James Edward Henson of Waverly; Patrick Lee (wife Angie) Henson of Virginia, IL; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers Bruce and Terry Lee Henson. He was a truck driver until he was disabled due to health. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am January 13, 2003 in Neece Funeral Home in Waverly. Visitation will be on Sunday at the Funeral Home from 2 til 4 pm. Burial will be in Waverly East Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Megan and/or Mikia Henson.

Mrs. M. Juanita Herrin (Baldwin)
M. Juanita Herrin, 77, of Jacksonville died Monday evening, April 7, 2003 at Passavant Area Hospital. She was born November 10, 1925 in Jacksonville the daughter of Everett and Louise Zachary Baldwin. She married Alford L. Herrin on July 25, 1943 in Jacksonville and he survives. Also surviving are two sons, Steve (wife, Bonnie) Herrin of Newton, Iowa and Richard Herrin of St. Petersburg, Florida, 6 grandchildren, Amy Herrin of Springfield, Brian (wife, Angela) Herrin of Orlando, Florida, Zachary Herrin of Newton, Iowa, and Brent, Chad, and Robbie Herrin all of St. Petersburg, Florida, one brother, Everett “Chip” (wife, Emily) Baldwin of Englewood, Florida, and two sisters, Mary Louise Sorrells of Houston, Texas and Judy (husband, Ron) Wade of LaGrange Park. Mrs. Herrin was a homemaker and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 11 a.m. on Thursday with the family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Illinois Elks Crippled Children.

Mr. Arthur Hiatt
Arthur Hiatt, age 91, of White Hall, died Friday evening, May 9, 2003 at the White Hall Multicare Center. He was born Jan. 19, 1912 west of White Hall, the son of Leslie Arthur and Hazel Hudson Hiatt. He married Imogene James on March 4, 1936 in rural White Hall and she preceded him in death on Aug. 3, 2002. He is survived by one daughter, Esther (husband, Harold) Jefferson of Alsey; one son, James A. (wife, Victoria) Hiatt of Alton; four grandchildren, Brad (wife, Phyllis) Jefferson and Duane (wife, Vicki) Jefferson, both of Winchester; L. Page (husband, Steve) Selby of Godfrey and Melissa (husband, Brian) Schmitz of Chicago and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Helen McPherson. Mr. Hiatt was a member of the Wilmington Baptist Church at Patterson for over 50 years and served as a deacon of the church. He farmed his entire life in Green e County until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of the Green e County Farm Bureau. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at the Wilmington Baptist Church in Patterson with burial at the Bowers Cemetery near Alsey. Friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Monday with the family meeting friends from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Monday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall. Memorials are suggested to the Wilmington Baptist Church or the White Hall Multicare Center Activity Fund.

Mr. Gloyd H. Hoesman
Gloyd H. Hoesman, age 82, of White Hall, died Friday afternoon, March 21, 2003 at his residence. He was born Aug. 30, 1920 near Chandlerville, the son of Albert Frederick and Maggie Mae Hopps Hoesman. He married Melba L. Huston on Feb. 7, 1943 in Chandlerville and she preceded him in death on May 24, 1993. He is survived by one son, William F. (wife, Judith) Hoesman of White Hall; one daughter, Carolyn A. (husband, Robert) Tittsworth of Coal Valley; three grandchildren, Donald Christison, Jr. of Moline; William Chad Hoesman and Cale Hoesman, both of White Hall; and five great grandchildren, Tyler R. Christison, Niki, Abbie, Jordyn and Carter Hoesman. He was preceded in death by one brother, Jarveaux Hoesman and one sister, Iva Pherigo. Mr. Hoesman retired March 31, 1990 from the Illinois Department of Transportation after 21 years of service. He was a World War II Army Veteran serving in Africa, Italy and the Middle East. He was a member of the White Hall VFW Post 7684 and was Past Commander of the White Hall American Legion Post 70 where he was very active in all their activities. He was also Past Commander of the 20th District Illinois American Legion. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 24, 2003 at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial at the White Hall Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the White Hall Cemetery or the White Hall American Legion Post 70.

Cleo C. Holterfield Cleo C. Holterfield, 79, of Carrollton died on Monday April 7, 2003 at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton unexpectedly. born in Hardin on Sept. 7, 1923 he was the son of the late George and Margaret Rhinesocker Holterfield. On August 3, 1946 he married the former Betty Branham in Hardin and she survives. Also surviving are 3 daughters: Linda and Jim Osborn of Carrollton, Patty Becker and her loving companion Rick Hires of Carrollton, Sherry and Todd Rausch of College Station, Texas, 7 grandchildren: Jason Osborn, Ryan Osborn, Matt Becker, Chris Becker, Dana Becker, Kaylee Rausch and Luke Rausch, 5 great grandchildren: Morgan Becker, Mattisan Becker, Jonah Becker, Lauren Osborn and Nathan Osborn. Several nieces and nephews also survive as well as a sister-in-law: Ilene Holterfield of Jerseyville. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters: Stella Franke and Irene Godar, and a brother: Joe Holterfield. Mr. Holterfield , following his service in WWII in the Army Air Corps, went to work for Columbiana Seed Co. and later Carl Breckon farming and managing livestock. He was a member of the Eldred American Legion Post and St. John’s Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. on Thursday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Prayer service will be held at 4 P.M. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 2 P.M. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Carrollton. Burial will follow in Eldred Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. John’s School, the American Heart Assn. or the Green e Co. Health Dept.

olonel Gerald W. Homann
Colonel Gerald W. Homann, U.S. Army, Retired, 83, of Waverly and formerly of Mattoon, died Thursday March 27 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born May 14, 1919, the son of Alma Furste Homann and Frederick G. Homann, on the family farm in rural Coles County. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Thorn Homann, of Waverly, his brother Frederick F. Homann, of Santa Maria, CA; his sister, Joyce H. Miller, of Effingham; and four children, LTC (Ret.) Dwight F. Homann (wife Elaine) of Waverly, Steven G. Homann (wife Theresa) of Fremont, CA, Nancy H. Lindsay (husband Joe) of Springfield, and Ann H. Mottl (husband Robert) of St. Louis; and six grandchildren: Heather, Hudson, Cassia and Adam Homann and Jacob and Brittany Lindsay. COL Homann attended public schools in Mattoon and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He was designated an Honor Military Graduate and commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Regular Army. He served in England with the 834th Engineer Aviation Battalion, constructing B-17 airfields. He landed with that unit at Normandy, where it constructed the first allied landing strip in Europe. In 1945 he was reassigned to the Pacific Theater of Operations and the 1863rd Engineer Aviation Battalion, constructing B-29 airfields. In 1946, COL Homann attended Harvard University, earning a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He subsequently had command and staff assignments in Korea, Japan, Green land, France and Germany. From 1960 through 1963 he commanded the U.S. Army Polar Research and Development Center in Green land: the “City under the Icecap” that was powered by the Army’s first nuclear reactor. In the following assignment he was the District Engineer for the Albuquerque District, Corps of Engineers. He retired in 1972, after serving as the Deputy Commander, Defense Atomic Support Agency, and moved to Waverly. From 1973 until 1981, he served as Mayor of the City of Waverly. He was a member of the Waverly Lions Club, the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, The Illinois Society of Professional Engineers, the Society of American Military Engineers, the Smedley Hometown Memorial Toastmaster’s Club, and many other civic organizations. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Waverly. A funeral service will be conducted at Christ Lutheran Church, Waverly at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, April 1, 2003, with burial at Waverly East Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Monday, March 31, 2003 at the Neece-Airsman-Hires Funeral Home, Waverly. In lieu of flowers, local memorial contributions are suggested to Christ Lutheran Church or the Waverly Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad. These memorials may be sent to the Neece-Airsman-Hires Funeral Home, 349 East Tanner Street, Waverly, IL 62692.

Mr. Clifford T. Hoots
Clifford T. Hoots, 86, of Jacksonville, died Friday evening, March 7, 2003, at his residence. He was born February 24, 1917 in Winchester the son of Grover Cleveland and Eva Welch Hoots. He married Ruby Osborne and she preceded him in death. He married Virginia Louise Nutgrass and she survives. He is also survived by two sons, Roger (wife, Linda) Hoots and Garry (wife, Mary) Hoots, both of Jacksonville; two daughters, Kay (husband, Donald) Garman of Jacksonville and Judy (husband, Bob) Hawkins of Springfield; twelve grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sons, Thurman Hoots, Donald Hoots, and David Hoots; two daughters, Patricia Baptist and Connie Sharon Hoots, and three brothers, Claude Hoots, Carl Hoots, and Clarence Hoots. Mr. Hoots was employed by Mobil Chemical for 24 years. Prior to that he worked as a car salesman in Jacksonville and had worked at Nesco. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of Westfair Baptist Church and Harmony Lodge No. 3, A.F. & A.M. He loved automobiles, eating out, and his many friendships. He especially enjoyed his family and grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at the Williamson Funeral Home, with burial at Winchester City Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home, where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Arthritis Foundation.

Mr. William E. "Red" Hopper
William E."Red" Hopper, age 71, of Jacksonville, formerly of Roodhouse, died Friday morning, March 7, 2003 at the White Hall Multicare Center. He was born Aug. 2, 1931 in Athensville, the son of Fred J. and Mildred Williams Hopper. He is survived by three daughters, Dana Hopper of Roodhouse and Carrie Weber and Tara Winters, both of White Hall; one son, James Hopper of Bluffs; six grandchildren; four brothers, Lyle Dean (wife, Carol) Hopper of Godfrey; John Hopper, Paul Hopper and Ron Hopper, all of Roodhouse; and three sisters, Virginia Buchanan of Roodhouse; Shirley (husband, Paul) Shipley of Pittsfield and Joyce (husband, Larry) Ford of Roodhouse. He was preceded in death by one son, William Hopper, Jr.; three sisters, Kate Phillips, Betty Jane Hopper and Genevieve Elliott and one brother, James Hopper. Mr. Hopper served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was an over the road truck driver, retiring in 1999. He enjoyed fishing and was a member of the White Hall VFW Post 7684. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2003 at the Richwoods Cemetery east of Roodhouse. The Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Roodhouse is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Shirley Ann Hudson (Ryan)
Shirley Ann Hudson, 74, of Jacksonville, died Thursday morning, January 9, 2003, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born on March 13, 1928, in Jacksonville, the daughter of John I. and Anna Ryan Davis. She married Warren Hudson on June 8, 1948, at the Our Saviour Rectory in Jacksonville, and he survives. She is also survived by two daughters, Judy A. Hudson of Jacksonville and Nancy L (husband, Danny) Hudson-White of rural Ashland; one sister, Helen (husband, Jack) Dearing of Louisville, Kentucky, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hudson, along with her husband and his family, owned and operated Hudson’s Dairy and Restaurant, on East Morton Avenue in Jacksonville, from 1948 until the early 1970’s. They also owned Hudson’s Dairy Store on the corner of Diamond and Morton at the same time. Mrs. Hudson and her husband traveled extensively, camping across the United States, traveling abroad, and enjoying many cruises. They spent winters in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Florida area, where she spent time biking and walking. She enjoyed reading, sewing, yard work, animals, and spending time with family. She was a pianist and a lover of music. Mrs. Hudson was a member of the Church of Our Saviour. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 13, 2003, at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. Friends may call after 12 Noon on Sunday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
