WILLIAM F. GUMM

STERLING - William F. Gumm, 83 of 1808 Avenue K, died Monday, March 17, 2003, at his home. He retired as a foreman from the former Northwestern Steel & Wire Company in 1983 after being employed there for 25 years.
Mr. Gumm was born February 8, 1920 in Centerville, IA, the son of Laurence and Ruth (Murdy) Gumm. He married Maxine Boyd January 16, 1945. She preceded him in death on February 4, 1999. He served as a bombardier in the Army Air Corps during WW II. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Sterling.
Survivors include a son, Bradley (Debra) Gumm of Sterling; a brother, John (Charlotte) Gumm of Des Moines, IA; five grandchildren, Michelle Greene of Cookville, TN, Christina (William) Goolsby of Madison, TN, Angela McCormick, of Grandville, TN, Brandi McCormick of Heyworth, James (Kim) McCormick of Bloomington; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Also preceding him in death were two sisters, Doris and Pauline Funeral services will be at 10 AM, Saturday, March 22, 2003 at the First Christian Church of Sterling with the Reverend Jack Koehler, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM, Friday, March 21, 2003 at the Schilling Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established to the First Christian Church of Sterling.

JEAN E. ATWOOD

STERLING - Jean E. Atwood, 85, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003 at Coventry Village.
Mrs. Atwood was born January 11, 1918 in Lucky Strike, Manitoba, Canada, the daughter of Harry M. and Mamie (McCullagh) Hillis. She grew up in Clinton, IA and graduated from Clinton High School. She attended college for two years in North Park and enjoyed vocational classes. She lived and worked in Chicago and Santa Monica, CA. She married G. Walter Atwood on November 1, 1947 in Santa Monica, CA. She was a member of the Christian Science Church in Madison and Mother Church in Boston, MA.
Mrs. Atwood was an honorary life member of Blackhawk CC, Daughters of the Nile (nosanc), and the Civics Club. She was a Green Bay Packer fan and a member of the Badger Boosters. She was also a basketball and hockey fan. She followed her husband, who was a championship golfer, in city, state and regional tournaments and loved watching golf at home. She enjoyed attending the theater for plays and musicals and loved opera music. She traveled extensively in the U.S. and the world and enjoyed five cruises.
Mrs. Atwood was famous for her positive attitude, loving spirit, generosity, and hugs that she loved to give at Coventry Friday coffees. She loved being with her family, many who called her Christmas Jean. She loved her cottage at Coventry Village and all her caring neighbors and friends.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda (Glen) Weatherwax of Sterling; a son, John W. Atwood of Panama City Beach, FL; grandsons, Dustin Winchell of Rock Falls, Dale Winchell of Sterling; two great-grandchildren, Keegan Winchell and Trinity Winchell of Rock Falls; a step-granddaughter, Michelle Weatherwax of Fairfield IA; a step great-grandchild, Reilly Harbison of Fairfield, IA; three sisters, Dorothy (Charles) Green of Malibu, CA, Joan (Ray) Cooper of Los Angeles, CA, Ruth Hoffman of Alton; a sister-in-law, Betty Hillis of Newport, VA and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death was her husband and two brothers, Jerry Hillis and Robert Hillis.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, March 22, 2003 at the Schilling Funeral Home. Visitation will be from noon to 1:00 PM.
A memorial has been established.

SALLY E. KIRKSEY

STERLING - Sally E. Kirksey, 76, of 105 East 23rd Street, died, Friday, March 21, 2003 at Sterling Pavilion.
Mrs. Kirksey was born May 12, 1926 in Egypt, AR. The daughter of Joseph A. and Josie M. (Green) McKalip. She married Albia "Arkie" G. Kirksey on February 6, 1947 in Jonesboro, AR. He preceded her in death on April 4, 1995. She was past member of Maranatha Baptist Church and enjoyed crocheting and fishing.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Ann (Robert) Rude of Rockford and Elizabeth Edwards of Sterling; two sons, E. Dwain (Barbara) Foster of Rock Falls and Donald Ray (Mary) Foster of Paragould, AK; two brothers, Kenneth and Carl (Esther) McKalip of DeSoto, MO; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.
Funeral services will be at 11:30AM Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling. Burial will be in Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Monday at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established.

MARGARET I. LENHART

STERLING - Margaret I. Lenhart, 95, 1801 Avenue G, died Thursday, March 20, 2003 at CGH Medical Center.
Mrs. Lenhart was born July 1, 1907 in Storm Lake, IA, the daughter of Jacob and Bertha (Harrison) Garwick. She married Chester P. Lenhart November 18, 1937 in Clinton, IA. He preceded her in death May 29, 1999. She was formerly a member of the Coleta Christian Church, the Coleta Christian Church Missionary Society, and later became a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sterling. She was a member of the Household Science Club and the Whiteside County Home Extension.
Survivors include two daughters, Janice (Lyle) Weber of Elmwood Park, Virginia (Robert) Britz of Elk Grove Village; a son, Larry (Donna) Lenhart of Coleta; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Luella Hubbard and Naomi Speer.
Funeral services will be at 11 AM, Monday, March 24, 2003 at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Herbert Reed, Pastor of First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sterling, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 AM, Monday at the Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established.

GRACE E. MOORE

STERLING - Grace E. Moore, 87, died Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at CGH Medical Center. Grace was born January 31, 1916 in Waupun, WI, the daughter of Lewis and Bessie (Martin) Wright. She married Harold J. Moore on September 21, 1935 in Beloit, WI. He preceded her in death on November 29, 1978. She was a member of Whiteside County Homemakers Unit, Sterling Woman's Club, Elkettes, Past Member of Dixon Lioness Club, Moose Lodge #726, First Congregational Church of Sterling U.C.C., Women's Guild and Church Circle. Survivors include two sons, Dennis (Pamela) Moore of Homosassa, FL and Michael L. (Helen) Moore of Sterling; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons Jimmy and Tom and one sister,
Eleanor Reynolds. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, April 19, 2003 at First Congregational Church, U.C.C. of Sterling with the Reverend Bob
Butterfield, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM Friday at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling.

MARY E. MYERS

STERLING - Mary E. Myers, 77, died Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at Coventry Village.
She had been employed for several years as a welder at Frazer Mfg. In Rock Falls.
Mrs. Myers was born May 16, 1925 in Newport, TN, the daughter of Alexander and
M. Lucinda (Costner) Giles. She married John S. Myers on January 22, 1946 in Orlando, FL. He preceded her in death on May 13, 1986. She was a member of the Rock Falls Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary Post #902 Rock Falls and the Moose Lodge #726 Women of Sterling.
Survivors include a brother, David Giles in Knoxville, TN; several nieces and nephews, including Pamela (Rick) Stange of Sterling.
Preceding her in death was a sister, Anna Lancaster and two brothers.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM, Thursday, April 24, 2003 at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Larry Thompson, pastor of Rock Falls United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at I.O.O.F. cemetery, Rock Falls. Visitation will be from 10-11 AM at the Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established to Alzheimer's Association and Hospice of the Rock River Valley.

RUSSELL C. HELMS

STERLING - Russell C. Helms, 83, died Monday, April 21, 2003 at Coventry Village.
He was a pipefitter at the former Northwestern Steel & Wire Co. for 23 years, prior to his retirement in 1983.
Mr. Helms was born November 15, 1919 in Hopkins Twp., the son of Bernard and Caroline (Eilers) Helms. He married Helen Marie Wilkinson on December 6, 1945 in the parsonage of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of West Jordan.
Survivors include his wife, Helen, of Sterling; a daughter, Judith (Steven) Shipman of Sterling; a son, Kenneth Helms of Leavenworth, KS; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were two sisters and four brothers.
Funeral services will be at 10 AM Friday, April 25, 2003 at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling with the Reverend Philip Gronbach, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established.

MADLYN N. LUTYENS

ROCK FALLS - Madlyn N. Lutyens, 85, of 430 Martin Road, died Saturday April 26, 2003.
Madlyn N. Lutyens was born July 1, 1917 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the daughter of James A. and Bertha Pearce Norman. She married Marvin E. Lutyens on May 17, 1942 in Rock Falls. He preceded her in death on January 2, 1998.
Mrs. Lutyens was a member of the First Congregational Church of Rock Falls, Royal Neighbors, and Kings Daughters.
She is survived by one daughter, Kathy (John) Mayus of Gilbert, AZ; four sons, Douglas H. (Vicki) Lutyens of Milwaukee, WS, Donald E. (Carolyn) Lutyens of Naperville, Gregory M. (Phyllis) Lutyens of Rock Falls, and James M. (Sandy) Lutyens of Fairmont, WV; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Four brothers, Lawrence, Philip, James and Robert; and four sisters, Bernice, Doris, Lois, and Dorothy also preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be 11 AM Tuesday, April 29, 2003 at the Schilling Funeral Home with Reverend Madeline Edwards of the First Congregational Church of Rock Falls officiating. Visitation will be one-hour prior from 10-11 AM. Private burial will be at Tampico Memorial cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church of Rock Falls or Hospice of the Rock River Valley.

SALOMON, Jesse G
Aug. 29, 1921 - May 11, 2003

STERLING - Jesse G. Salomon, 81, of Sterling, died Sunday May 11, 2003 at his daughters home. He was employed by the former Northwestern Steel and Wire Company for 35 years prior to retiring in 1983, in the furnace department.
Mr. Salomon was born August 29, 1921 in Zamora, Mexico the son of Frank and Guadalupe (Caratachea) Salomon. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Latin American Social Club and enjoyed traveling, cooking, classic cars and family.
Survivors include four daughters, Mary Ellen Schmider of Simi Valley, CA, Debbie (Bob) Bush of Las Vegas, NV, Jayne (Brian) Cleveland of Kewanee, and Brenda Kist of Gary IN; four sons, Jonathon (Lisa) Salomon of Burbank, CA, Frank Salomon of Sterling, Jesse Salomon of Gary IN and Mark Salomon Las Vegas, NV; twenty grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Deannie Ryan a sister Maria Elena and one grandson Brian Salomon.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM Friday, May 16, 2003 at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Uriel Lopez, officiating. Burial will be at Riverside cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Thursday and from 12 noon-1:30 PM at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established.
