Arthur J. Wickens
Former Morrison Road resident Arthur J. "Jack" Wickens died Thursday, October 8, 1998, at Hearne Health Care Center in Morgantown. He was 94.
Mr. Wickens was born November 17, 1903, in Chicago to Charles G. and Mary Elizabeth Ewell Wickens.
He and Dorothy L. Lutz were married April 30, 1927, in Chicago. She died January 15, 1998.
Mr. Wickens was graduated from the University of Chicago.
Mr. Wickens worked as an architectural engineer with Illinois Bell for 38 years, retiring in 1967.
He was a member of the Bean Blossom Mennonite Church.
Mr. Wickens enjoyed riding horses and bicycles. He also enjoyed building ships in bottles.
Mr. Wickens moved to the Helmsburg area from Illinois in 1968. He moved to Morgantown seven years ago.
Survivors include his care givers and close friends, Marvin and Ruth Cody of Helmsburg.
Pastor Henry Wagler conducted a service Saturday, October 10, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in Jackson Township's Bear Creek Cemetery.

William R. Burton
Former Morgantown resident William Russell Burton died Saturday, October 17, 1998, at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. A resident of that city, he was 68.
Mr. Burton was born May 7, 1930, in Richmond to George Lewis Burton and Hassie Eliza-beth Atkins.
He and Joyce Joan Minor were married October 27, 1950, in Richmond. She survives.
Mr. Burton had worked as a truck driver for Sodrel Truck Lines in Indianapolis for 38 years, retiring in 1991.
He had owned the Boot Hill Shoe Store in Morgantown from 1983 until 1991.
Mr. Burton was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church at Trafalgar.
He enjoyed fishing and woodworking.
Other survivors include three daughters, Phyllis Diane Hydell of Mooresville, KaAnne Marie Short of Hopkinsville, Kentucky and Amy Lynette Rieger of Indianapolis; a son, David William Burton of Franklin; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Mr. Burton was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Miller in 1997; and a brother, Lewis Maynard Burton.
The Reverend Ed Pearson led a service Tuesday, October 20, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in that city's East Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Fellowship Baptist Church Building Fund, 4743 South 600 West, Trafalgar, Indiana 46181, or the American Diabetes Association, 668 East 62nd Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46220.

Alvin F. Cummings
Alvin Francis "Al" Cummings died Saturday, October 17, 1998, at Universal Health Care Center in Franklin. A resident of that city, he was 84.
Mr. Cummings was born September 27, 1914, in Johnson County to William Elza and Sarah Elizabeth Yost Cummings.
He and Anna Mae Walker were married June 29, 1951. She survives.
Mr. Cummings had worked as a bookkeeper for Paris Super Service Station for several years.
He was a member of New Life Baptist Church.
Other survivors include a son, Gary Keith Cummings of Indianapolis; two sisters, Helen Irene Thomas and Geneva Martin, both of Gulfport, Mississippi; two grandchildren; a great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Cummings was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and three sisters.
Pastor Rick Henry will conduct a service today, October 21, at 2 p.m. in Vandivier-Tudor Funeral Home at Franklin.
Burial was in that city's Greenlawn Cemetery.

Arthur Humpal
A Brown County artist who was compared to such art colony pioneers as Cariani and Graf has died.
Arthur E. Humpal died Thursday, October 15, 1998, at the Brown County Community Care Center in Salt Creek Park. He was 95.
He was born November 11, 1902, in Chicago, Illinois to Joseph and Ann Humpal.
Mr. Humpal had worked as an engraver for the Chicago Trib-une and Louis-ville Courier-Journal newspapers before retiring.
He was a member of the Brown County Art Gallery.
After living in relative obscurity for many years, Mr. Humpal gained notoriety after almost 500 paintings were found in a locked upstairs room in his ramshackle home on State Road 46 West in 1992.
Late in 1991, Mr. Humpal was found by law enforcement officials near death amid electric blankets with frayed cords in the old home he had purchased in 1927.
In the 1920's he and his brother, Frank, would travel throughout Brown County to paint.
Sometimes, Mr. Humpal would join such noted artists as T.C. Steele and Adolph Robert Schulz on painting excursions.
"Galleries wanted to take your money. I'm the one who tramped through the mountains and valleys doing the painting, but when a gallery sells your work, they want to take a third," Mr. Humpal told The Democrat in 1992. "Problem is, I never sold any paintings."
Mr. Humpal took up his palette and brush during his early childhood in Berwyn, Illinois.
He and his brother studied art with a well-known painter who was their neighbor.
The two also later studied at the famed Art Institute of Chicago.
Mr. Humpal described his painting style as impressionistic, leaning toward abstract. He also preferred bright colors.
He spent the remainder of his life at the Brown County Community Care Center near Nashville.
Survivors include his son, Richard Humpal of Princeton, Illinois; his niece and guardian, Florence Humpal of Kenmore, Washington.
Mr. Humpal was preceded in death by a sister; and four brothers.
There was no service.
Day Mortuary in Bloomington was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Brown County Art Gallery.

P.F. Mankow
Bloomington resident P.F. Mankow died Friday, October 16, 1998, at his home. He was 88.
Mr. Mankow was born February 19, 1910, in White Russia.
He had taught Slavic languages at the Berlitz School of Language in New York.
Mr. Mankow was a former member of the Brown County Art Guild.
His wife, Anna Mankow, died July 10, 1998.
Private services will be held later.
Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, Greene and Harrell Chapel in Bloomington was in charge of arrangements.

Nora Pruitt
Brown County native Nora Pruitt died Thursday morning, October 15, 1998, at the Todd-Aikens Health Center in Franklin. A resident of Edinburgh, she was 73.
Mrs. Pruitt was born April 9, 1925, in Brown County to Joseph Hearth and Ollie Mitchner Hearth.
She and Merrill Pruitt were married December 16, 1955. He survives.
Mrs. Pruitt had worked as a cashier at the old A & P Grocery Store in Columbus. She had also worked as a supervisor for Columbus Process.
She was a member of Old Union United Church of Christ.
Other survivors include a daughter, Kay Perkins of Taylorsville; a son, Steve Wilkerson of Greenwood; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Pruitt was preceded in death by three sisters; and a brother.
The Reverend Clyde Hunter led a service Monday, October 19, at Eskew-Eaton Funeral Home in Edinburgh.
Burial was in that community's Rest Haven Cemetery.

Gladys L. Rader
Cordry Sweetwater Conservancy District resident and retired educator Gladys Lucille Rader died Saturday, October 17, 1998, at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. She was 92.
Mrs. Rader had lived on the district's Paw Paw Drive.
She was born July 23, 1906, in Arlington, Ohio to Harry and Millie Castor Long.
She and George Rader were married December 25, 1926. He died April 14, 1979.
Mrs. Rader was graduated from Ohio's Arlington High School and Ashland University.
She was a member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, Order of the Eastern Star, Church of the Lakes United Methodist Church in Canton, Ohio.
Survivors include a son, D. Jack Rader of Nineveh; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Rader was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonnie Sue Weinhardt; two brothers, Max Long and Rufus Long; a sister, Susan Fox; and a grandchild.
The Reverend Alan Sandford led a service Monday, October 19, at Crates Funeral Home in Arlington, Ohio.
Burial was in that community's Arlington Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Donald D. Smith
Donald D. Smith died Monday afternoon, October 12, 1998, at his home in Martinsville after a long illness. He was 82.
Mr. Smith left survivors in Brown County.
He was born July 23, 1916, in Monroe County to Robert O. and Ethel L. Neal Smith.
He first married Maude Anderson April 17, 1941. She died December 31, 1971. Mr. Smith and Elsie Whitaker were married October 29, 1990. She survives in Morgan County.
Mr. Smith worked as a grain farmer and had raised livestock for more than 50 years. He also owned and operated a grain hauling business in the 1960s.
Mr. Smith raised and trained quarter horses for many years. For the past several years, he had been working with Belgian horses and draft mules, winning several awards in various competitions and parades as well as the Indiana State Fair.
He moved to Martinsville from Monroe County in the 1930s and was a member of the Hindustan Christian Church.
Mr. Smith was recently recognized for being a member of the Masonic Lodge for 50 years.
He had served in the Indiana National Guard from 1937 until 1939.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Double Y Saddle Club
Other survivors include two sons, Donald Leonard Smith and Mark R. Smith, both of Martinsville; three daughters, Nancy Davis, Marsha Betts and Betty Kindle, all of Martinsville; two step-daughters, Sue Staley of Nashville and Aleatha Hoosier of Billings, Montana; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Peavy; and three grandchildren.
The Reverend David Vaughn conducted a service Friday, October 16, at Hindustan Christian Church in Monroe County.
Burial was in that community's Hindustan Cemetery.
Costin Funeral Home in Martinsville was in charge of arrangements.

Clara M. Smith
Brown County native Clara Mae Smith died Tuesday evening, October 13, 1998, at Columbus Health and Rehabilition Center. A resident of that city, she was 88.
Mrs. Smith was born October 17, 1909, in Brown County to Otha and Rosa Reeves Roberts.
She and Melvin Smith were married December 25, 1947, in Nashville. He died April 26, 1993.
Mrs. Smith had worked at Arvin Industries. She also managed the Gnaw Bone Grocery in Brown County for several years.
She attended the Weslyan Church at Gnaw Bone.
Survivors include three daughters, Edith Whittington of Columbus, Betty Williamson of Nashville and Peggy Hamblin of Scottsburg; a brother, Otha Roberts II of Okeechobee, Florida; two sisters, Winifred Scrogums of Nashville and Wanda Curry of Columbus; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Lee Smith; a brother; and three sisters.
The Reverend Brent Denny led a service Friday, October 16, at Myers Funeral Service, Hathaway-Myers Chapel in Columbus.
Burial was in Nashville's Greenlawn Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
