Bernice Waltz
Long-time Brown County resident Bernice F. Waltz died Sunday, November 22, 1998, at Richard L. Roudebush Veterans Administration Medical Center in Indianapolis. She was 74.
Mrs. Waltz had lived in Brown County since 1956.
She was born December 27, 1923, in St. Paul, Minnesota to Lewis and Evelyn Shoemaker Gagne.
She and Lawrence M. Waltz were married June 30, 1944, in Edinburgh. He died in August 1966.
Mrs. Waltz had worked as a cook for 20 years at several fraternity and sorority houses on the Indiana University campus, retiring in 1983.
She and her husband had also owned and operated the Waltz Funeral Home in Brookville in the 1960s.
Mrs. Waltz enjoyed gardening.
She was graduated from Mortuary College in Indianapolis in 1950.
During World War II, Mrs. Waltz had served as a staff car driver in the United States Army Air Corps.
Survivors include two sons, Michael H. Waltz of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Hiram R. Waltz of Nashville; four daughters, Melvina C. Waltz and Jeanette M. Waltz, both of Nashville, Lisa A. Cooper of Columbus and Lawrene M. Brown of Clarksville, Tennessee; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Laverne Gagne, Kathryn Gagne, Doris Gagne and Marie Gagne.
Mrs. Waltz was preceded in death by two infant sons.
The Reverend Paul Chikaney will lead a service today, November 25, in Edinburgh's Rest Haven Cemetery.
Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown was in charge of arrangements.

Morgan LaVere
Helmsburg Elementary School sixth grader Morgan Joseph LaVere died Saturday, November 28, 1998, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. A resident of Jackson Township, he was 12.
Counselors were called in at Helmsburg to help students deal with their classmates death.
Mr. LaVere was born June 13, 1986, in Flint, Michigan to Randall W. LaVere and Connie S. Hoskins Jones. His father survives in West Palm Beach, Florida. His mother lives in Brown County.
Although he had been diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy, Morgan had lived life to its fullest and enjoyed every minute of it.
According to Mrs. White, Morgan had a good sense of humor and a quick and smile for those around him.
"He was a really special kid," Mrs. White said. She said he was also a brave person who didn't complain in spite of his illness.
"He gives us all courage, hope and the ability to look past some of our more bothersome things," she said.
At Helmsburg, he was on student council and the honor roll.
Morgan enjoyed the Chicago Bulls basketball team, swimming and wheelchair racing.
He had attended the Muscular Dystrophy Association Camp in Lafayette, where his older brother was a counselor.
Morgan also enjoyed the time at school he spent with his teacher's aid, Heidi Gulley.
Other survivors include his step-father, Maurice Jones of Brown County; his brother, Randall W. LaVere of Brown County; maternal grandparents, Jim and Shirley Hoskins of Morgantown; paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Ruth LaVere of Deltona, Florida; his great-grandfather, Alvin Hoskins of Asher, Kentucky; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Brother Hughes McKinley Smith conducted a service Tuesday, December 1, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in that community's East Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Justin Couch Memorial Fund, in care of Citizens Bank of Central Indiana, 100 Commercial Street, Nashville, Indiana.

Opal McDavid
Morgantown native Opal Maxine Harper McDavid died Sunday, November 22, 1998, at Holston Valley Medical Center in Clinchport, Virginia. A resident of that city, she was 63.
Mrs. McDavid was born August 18, 1935, in Morgantown to Claude and Lonnie Randolph Harper.
She was married to Kelly McDavid. He survives.
Mrs. McDavid was a homemaker. She was a member of the Natural Tunnel Freewill Baptist Church.
Other survivors include a daughter, Patricia Ann Hall of Big Stone Gap, Virginia; three sons, Kelly McDavid Jr. of Duffield, Virginia and Claude Lee McDavid and Thomas Jeffrey McDavid, both of Clinchport, Virginia; five sisters, Mary Adkins of Dillsburg, Pennsylvania, Ruth Grinstead of Greenfield, Jean Hines of Indianapolis, Sue Morris of Franklin and Linda McCormack of Keller, Texas; a brother, Randolph Harper of Morgantown; and nine grandchildren.
Mike Dalton conducted a service Tuesday, November 24, at Gene Falin Memorial Chapel in Virginia.
Burial was at Davidson Cemetery in Rye Cove, Virginia.

Mildred Phelps
Mildred Catherine Mote Phelps, mother of Jack R. Phelps of Morgantown, died Tuesday, November 24, 1998, at St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers in Beech Grove. A resident of Indianapolis, she was 89.
She was born May 4, 1909, in Crawfordsville to Ulysses and Lillian Robertson Mote.
Mrs. Phelps had worked as a custodian at the old American Fletcher National Bank in Indianapolis more more than 20 years, retiring in 1969.
Other survivors include three more sons, Darrell Gene Phelps of Indinapolis, John David Phelps of Miami, Florida, and Robert A. Phelps of Fort Myers, Florida; two daughters, Judy A. Lay and Janet Niehaus, both of Indianapolis; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
A service was conducted Friday, November 27, at G.H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home.
Burial was in Johnson County's Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society, 7929 Michigan Road, Indianapolis, Indiana 46268, or to the donor's choice of charities.

Joan B. Rosen
Artist and long-time county resident Joan Bates Rosen died Tuesday, evening, November 24, 1998, at her home on Artist Drive. She was 74.
Mrs. Rosen was born June 9, 1924, in Indianapolis to Albert L. Dougherty and Angeline Nixon Bates.
She was married to the late Brown Circuit Court Judge Samuel R. Rosen. He died in 1997.
She and her husband traveled extensively over the last several years. Their journeys took them to China and other parts of the globe.
Mrs. Rosen was graduated from Colby College in Maine.
Mrs. Rosen was a member of the Golf Club of Brown County and the Brown County Art Guild.
She had held many occupations over the years, from a draftsman at Sperry Gyroscope on Long Island during World War II to working in cancer research at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Mrs. Rosen served as the illustrator for books written by her husband, including the popular A Judge Judges Mushrooms.
Survivors include three daughters, Hyla A. Kerr, Alison N. Abel and Darcy D. Quick, all of Nashville; a son, Lon F. Quick of Kenosha, Wisconsin; two brothers, Alson Dougherty of Moravia, New York and William Dougherty of Nashville; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; two step-sons, Richard Rosen and Thomas Rosen, both of New York; and a step-daughter, Betsy Marks of Connecticut.
Services will be scheduled at a later date.
Burial is to be in Nashville's Greenlawn Cemetery.
Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Multiple Sclerosis research or to the Brown County Humane Society.

Emma Schroughams
Brown County native Emma Violet Rogers Schroughams died Tuesday, November 24, 1998, at her home in Mooresville. She was 85.
Mrs. Schroughams was born September 29, 1913, in Brown County to Charles Stanton and Mary Elizabeth Bright Rogers.
She and Millard Schroughams were married October 4, 1931. He died July 13, 1987.
Mrs. Schroughams was a homemaker. She attended the Brooklyn Church of God in Morgan County.
Survivors include three sons, Charles M. Schroughams of Cloverdale, Delmer R. Schroughams of Driggs, Idaho and Frank L. Schroughams of Mooresville; two daughters, Kathryn L. Simpson and Anna M. Smith, both of Mooresville; a sister, Eva Jarvis of Morgantown; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The Reverend Richard Clevenger led a service Sunday, November 29, at Carlisle and Son Funeral Chapel in Mooresville.
Burial was in Friends Cemetery in Pendleton.

Lola Swango
Lola B. Swango, the grandmother of Nashville resident Robert L. East, died Sunday, November 22, 1998, at Beverly Health Care in Bloomington. A resident of that city, she was 99.
Mrs. Swango was born May 24, 1899, to David and Martha Lowery Waterford Sherlock.
She was married to Ordie Swango. He died in 1985.
Mrs. Swango was a homemaker.
She was a member of Monroe County's Harrodsburg Assembly of God Church.
Other survivors include two daughters, Lucille Deckard and Maxine Swango, both of Bloomington; two other grandchildren, Marlene Rice and Suzanne Wells, both of Bloomington; five great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Swango was preceded in death by four sisters, Grace Gray, Janette Sherlock, Myrtle Crum and Bertha Taylor; and five brothers, Alva Sherlock, Avery Sherlock, Roy Waterford, Claude Waterford and Vergis Waterford.
Pastor Bill Richardson led a service November 25, at Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington.
Burial was in Monroe County's Clover Hill Cemetery.

Jeffery Alvey
Mt. Nebo Road resident Jeffery Wade Alvey died Sunday evening, December 6, 1998, at his home. He was 20.
Mr. Alvey was born January 14, 1978, in Columbus to Harris James "Jim" and Karen Greathouse Alvey. His parents survive in Van Buren Town-ship.
He had work-ed at Arvin's Gladstone Plant in Columbus.
Mr. Alvey was a member of Mt. Nebo United Meth-odist Church and the Inter-national Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union in Columbus.
He was graduated from Brown County High School in 1996.
During his high school career, he was a member of the school's math academic team.as well as the Brown County High School band.
Mr. Alvey had attended Indiana University-Purdue University's Columbus campus.
Other survivors include two brothers, Patrick Michael Alvey and Timothy Lane Alvey, both of Columbus.
Pastor David Ison and Dale Branstetter will lead a service Thursday, December 10, at 1 p.m. in the Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North.
Burial will be in Van Buren Township's Christiansburg Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bartholomew County Area Hospice, 2400 East 17th Street, Columbus, Indiana 47201.

Bernice Chapman
Morgantown resident Bernice Mae Chapman died Sunday, November 29, 1998, in Martinsville. She was 75.
Mrs. Chapman was born September 27, 1923, in Martinsville to William Coda and Grace Mae Daggy Baker.
She and Lester C. Chapman were married May 3, 1947, in Louisville, Kentucky. He survives.
Mrs. Chapman was graduated from Martinsville High School in 1941.
She had worked at Newberry's and the Martinsville Hosiery Mill. Mrs. Chapman had also worked at Stewart Warner and Continental Optical in Indianapolis.
She was a member of the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn in Morgantown.
Other survivors include three sons, Larry Chapman of Trafalgar, Steven Chapman of Martinsville and Rickey Chapman of Morgantown; a daughter, Shirley Zupancic of Morgantown; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.
Mrs. Chapman was preceded in death by a daughter, Karla L. Chapman in 1958; four brothers, Forrest Baker, George Baker, Thurman Baker and Wallace Baker; and three sisters, Venus Hacker, Lola Cooper and Louise Evans.
Brother Tom Nation led a service Wednesday, December 2, at Neal and Summers Mortuary in Martinsville.
Burial was in Morgan County's Mount Nebo Cemetery.

Fritch Fleener
Former Brown County resident Fritch A. Fleener died Thursday evening, December 3, 1998, at the Kennedy Living Center in Martinsville. A resident of Edinburgh, he was 95.
Mr. Fleener was born November 5, 1903, in Brown County to Samuel T. and Martha Ann Fritch Fleener.
He and Mary Naomi Richards were married August 10, 1930. She survives.
Mr. Fleener had also lived in Fort Myers, Florida and Flat Rock.
He had helped organize the Flat Rock Volunteer Fire Department in Shelby County and later served as the fire chief.
Mr. Fleener also had owned and operated Fleener's Feed Store in Flat Rock from 1945, until retiring in 1968.
Other survivors include three daughters, Maxine Lain of Edin-burgh, Judy Stevenson of Lafayette and Maryleah Fleener of Highland; a son, Wendell Fleener of Grapeview, Washington; eight grandchildren, Thomas A. Lain of Columbus, Carol A. Watler of Edinburgh, Teresa Fleener, Nancy Fleener, Nathan Fleener and Tammie Rabura, all of Washington state, Kathy Thomas of Farmland and Kevin Stevenson and Kent Stevenson, both of Minnesota; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Guy Otis Fleener in 1996.
Al Johnson conducted a service Monday, December 7, at Eskew-Eaton Funeral Home in Edinburgh.
Burial was in Shelby County's Flat Rock Cemetery.
