W. Clyde Ellett
Former Trafalgar area resident W. Clyde Ellett died Wednesday, February 10, 1999, at Bethany Village in Indianapolis. A resident of that city, he was 87.
Mr. Ellett left survivors in Brown County.
He was born May 10, 1911, in Ellettsville to James Fred Ellett and Pearl May Smith Ellett.
He and Dorothy C. Croddy were married January 7, 1933. She died September 24, 1996.
Mr. Ellett was a farmer. He had also worked at Trafalgar Hardware for several years. Later, he worked at L & M Lumber Supply in Franklin, retiring in 1974.
Mr. Ellett was a member of the Trafalgar Christian Church. He had been a member of the church's board of trustees.
Survivors include three daughters, Elizabeth "Liz" Craig of Indianapolis, Barbara Beard of Indianapolis and Norma Blackmore of Noblesville; a son, Gary Ellett of Wapakoneta, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Dorothy Dine of Goldpoint Road, Helen Richhart of Spearsville Road, Ruth Miller of Morgantown and Viola Pierce of Franklin; and two brothers, Raymond Ellett of North Fort Myers, Florida and Damon Ellett of Brownsville, Texas.
The Reverend Cletis Ellett led a service Saturday, February 13, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in Brown County's Spearsville Church of Christ Cemetery.

Nellie Finchum
Nellie Margaret Fueston Underwood Finchum, a Franklin resident with ties to the Cordry-Sweetwater Conservancy District, died Thursday, February 4, 1999, at Universal Health Care Center in Franklin. She was 85.
Mrs. Finchum was born March 18, 1913, in Indianapolis to Milton and Louise Christine Timmerman Fueston.
She and Leonard Underwood were married December 31, 1947. He died August 31, 1973. She then married Paul Isaac Finchum July 6, 1975, at Church of the Lakes in northern Brown County. He died October 23, 1989.
Mrs. Finchum was graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis in 1929. She was also graduated from Los Angeles Poly Tech of Venice, California in 1930.
She had worked at L.S. Ayres and Company as a telephone operator for 15 years, retiring in 1970.
Mrs. Finchum was a member of Brown County's Church of the Lakes and Nineveh Senior Citizens AARP.
Survivors include two sisters, Shirley Marie Croucher and Edna Mae Pryor, both of Nineveh.
Pastor Dick Crowley conducted a service Monday, February 8, at Vandivier-Tudor Funeral Home at Franklin.
Burial was in Johnson County's Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Patricia Hawkins
Patricia R. Hawkins died Saturday, February 6, 1999, at her home in Indianapolis. She was 67.
Mrs. Hawkins left survivors in the Brown County area.
She was born March 10, 1931, in Franklin to George D. and Lena Dell McIntyre Laggons.
She had worked as a cashier and manager at Shell Gas Station for 15 years before retiring in 1982.
Survivors include seven children, Daniel D. Hawkins Jr. of Boonesville, Kentucky, Jim E. Hawkins of Morgantown and Debra J. Carter, Dana M. Hawkins, Gene M. Hawkins, Joseph A. Hawkins and Kimberly L. Hawkins, all of Indianapolis; a brother, Ivan G. Eacret of Waldron; 27 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A service was conducted Thursday, February 11, at G.H. Herrmann Funeral Home in Indianapolis.

Ruth Hessman
A woman known by many in southwestern Brown County as the "mayor of Elkinsville" has died.
Ruth C. Hessman died Thursday evening, February 11, 1999, at her home on Elkinsville Road after a lengthy illness. She was 70.
Mrs. Hessman was born December 9, 1928, in Indianapolis to Lee Polston and Leona Schie-man.
She was married to Charles Joseph Hess-man. He died February 16, 1995.
Mrs. Hess-man and her husband had vacationed near Elkinsville in the 1960s before finally settling there in 1980.
For many years, she had worked at the Story Inn and Gift Shop.
Mrs. Hessman was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church on State Road 135 North.
She was a member of the church's Women's Guild.
Survivors include three daughters, Susan Groce, Joni Burris and Juliann Abbott, all of Indianapolis; two sons, Charles Hessman and Robert Hessman, both of Nashville; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two half-brothers, Bob Harbison of New Albany and Thomas Corcorcan; and a sister-in-law, Rosemary Miller of Indianapolis.
Father William Stumpf led a service Tuesday morning, February 16, at St. Agnes Catholic Church.
Burial was in Johnson County's Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North was in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn Hillenburg
Carolyn Hillenburg, the sister of Nashville resident Rissie Kirts, died Friday morning, February 12, 1999, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. A resident of Scipio, she was 64.
Mrs. Hillenburg was born September 11, 1934, in Crab Orchard, Kentucky to Thomas and Lenore Smith Osborne.
She and Gene Hillenburg were married April 1, 1950, in Kurtz. He survives.
Mrs. Hillenburg had worked at Cummins Engine Company in Columbus before retiring.
Other survivors include a son, Tim Hillenburg of Seymour; a daughter, Marlene Burton of Scipio; a brother, Dan Smallwood of Norman; four other sisters, Retna Kirts of Columbus, Retha Kirts of Houston, Estelle Pugh of Crawfordsville and Odella Stoops of Kankakee, Illinois; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
The Reverend Bill Weaver conducted a service Tuesday, February 16, at Spurgeon Funeral Home in Brownstown.
Burial was at Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Reddington Christian Church building fund, or Kurtz Church of the Nazarene.

Marshall Holder
Former Brown County resident Marshall L. Holder died Tuesday, February 9, 1999, at his home in Valparaiso. He was 58.
Mr. Holder had lived in Valparaiso for the last year. He had also lived in Indianapolis.
Mr. Holder was born Feb-ruary 11, 1940, in Bowling Green, Ken-tucky to Earl and Margaret Flora Holder.
He and Marsha Ann North were married April 1, 1996, in Nashville. She survives.
Mr. Holder had worked as a machinist at Ford Motor Company in Indianapolis for 13 years, retiring in 1997.
Before 1980, he had worked as a self-employed building contractor.
Mr. Holder was a member of the Indianapolis Moose Lodge and United Auto Workers Union Local 111.
He enjoyed woodworking and carpentry.
Other survivors include two daughters, Tracey Dowling and Tammy Hawkins, both of Indianapolis; a son, Rick Holder of Bloomfield; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Earline Morris of Georgetown, Kentucky, Betty Fowles of South Bend and Alice Anderson of Kouts; and a brother, the Reverend Stan Holder of Georgetown, Kentucky.
His brother, the Reverend Stan Holder, conducted a service Friday, February 12, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in that community's East Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Post Office Box 1127, Martinsville, Indiana 46151.

Eustayce Leonard
Long-time Brown County resident Eustayce L. Leonard died Friday, February 12, 1999, at his home on Dunaway Road in Jackson Township. He was 92.
Mr. Leonard was born December 16, 1906, in Indianapolis to Charles and Minnie Wil-liams Leonard.
He and Goldie M. Fox were married September 5, 1934, in Franklin. She survives in Brown County.
Mr. Leonard had worked at Anaconda Wire and Cable in Anderson for 25 years, retiring in 1972.
In the 1920s, Mr. Leonard and a friend on furlough from the United States Navy, Lain Sipes, set out to construct a 40-foot observation tower on Bald Knob. Bald Knob was located a couple of miles southwest of Nashville on the "Weed Patch Road."
The friends' work was chronicled in a Down in the Hills O' Brown County article published in the Indianapolis Star. The article was written by Frank Hohenberger.
"After they had placed some of the corner posts, they found it was going to be a pretty big job. When their difficulties were noised around about 15 helpers from Nashville and the surrounding territory volunteered their services and in a few days the structure, complete with three flights of stairs, was attracting the attention of a great many people," the article said.
He had been a member of the Charlestown Masonic Lodge for 57 years.
Mr. Leonard built one of the first fire towers in Brown County.
He was graduated from the old Nashville High School in 1926.
Other survivors include two daughters, Virginia Gilbert of Brown County and Minnie Leonard Parrish of Chesterfield; a brother, Edward L. Leonard of Anderson; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and two nieces, Eleanor Sipes and Betty Ford, both of Brown County.
Mr. Leonard was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Weddle and Lillian Sipes.
A private service was conducted Monday, February 15, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in Brown County's Goshen Cemetery.

Hesper Parker
Life-long Brown County resident Hesper M. Parker died Wednesday afternoon, Februray 10, 1999, at the Brown County Community Care Center in Salt Creek Park. She was 96.
Mrs. Parker was born December 11, 1902, in Brown County to Emmett and Annabelle Bright Brown.
She had been the last surviving member of the Emmett Brown family.
She was married to Walter "Toots" Parker. He died February 21, 1991.
Mrs. Parker was a homemaker.
Survivors include three sons, Loren Parker and Lyndel Parker, both of Nashville and Lawrence Parker of Sebastian, Florida; two daughters, Audrey Turner of Columbus and Joan Kemp of Sebastian, Florida; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Jerry Pittman led a service Saturday, February 13, at Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North.
Burial was in Nashville's Greenlawn Cemetery.

Garnet Parsley
Garnet M. Parsley, the wife of Brown County native Nathaniel W. Parsley, died Sunday, February 14, 1999, at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. A resident of Morgantown, she was 82.
Mrs. Parsley was born April 18, 1916, in Morgan County to Harry and Helen Broadstreet Voyles.
She and Mr. Parsley were married March 30, 1940, in Morgantown. He survives.
Mrs. Parsley was a homemaker. She had helped her husband on the family's farm for more than 58 years.
She was a member of the Morgantown Baptist Church for more than 50 years. While at church, Mrs. Parsley had taught the junior girl's class for 30 years. She was also a member of the church's "I'll Try" class.
Mrs. Parsley enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and her calico cat "Fluffy."
Other survivors include a daughter, Nancy C. Wilson of Franklin; two sons, Larry G. Parsley of Bargersville and Steven L. Parsley of Greenwood; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas E. Voyles Sr. in 1995.
The Reverend Myron Young and Reverend Richard Tallman will lead a service today, February 17, at 1 p.m. in the Meredith-Clark Funeral Home at Morgantown.
Burial was in Franklin's Greenlawn Cemetery.

Lilburn Sims
State Road 46 East resident Lilburn Leach Sims died Tuesday, February 9, 1999, at his home. He was 81.
Mr. Sims was born April 22, 1917, in King's Mountain, Kentucky to Walter and Mae Leach Sims.
His widow, Kattie Patterson Sims, survives in Brown County.
He had worked as a truck driver for the Indiana State Highway Department for 30 years before retiring.
Mr. Sims was a member of Locust Grove Baptist Church in King's Mountain, Kentucky.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Sims was an avid fox hunter.
Other survivors include a son, Phillip J. Sims of Nashville; four daughters, Brenda K. Nicholson of Martinsville, Charlotte Renee Burchfield of Indianapolis, Merlin F. Shine of Indianapolis and Carolyn K. Sears of Evansville; four brothers, Keith Sims of Mason, Ohio, Kenneth Sims of Waynesburg, Kentucky, Sherman Sims of New Whiteland and Leonard Sims of Milan; four sisters, Gladys Carman and Izora Ratliff, both of King's Mountain, Kentucky, Betty Jane Merrell of Burlington, Kentucky and Jean Gooch of Cincinnati, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Brother John Dean conducted a service Friday, February 12, at Locust Grove Baptist Church.
Burial was in K.P. Hall Cemetery in King's Mountain, Kentucky.
Fox Funeral Home in Stanford, Kentucky were in charge of arrangements.

Christopher Thomas
Morgantown resident Christopher Lynn Thomas died Sunday, February 14, at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis. He was 46.
A 1972 graduate of Brown County High School, Mr. Thomas worked for 25 years at the Allison Transmission plant in Indianapolis. He has a member of the New Life Christian Church and a veteran of the Marine Corps. He was a coach of the football and girls softball teams at Indian Creek High School.
He was born December 11, 1952 in Indianapolis to Fredrick and Juanita Johnson Thomas. His mother survives.
He married Sharon Sue Sawyer Thomas in 1972. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Christy Thacker of Morgantown; a son, Ronnie Thomas of Beech Grove; a granddaughter, Ashlyn Thacker of Morgantown; a sister, Barbara Galema of Indianapolis and a brother, Keith Thomas of Indianapolis.
The funeral will be Thursday, February 18, at 1 p.m. at the Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home with Reverend Rick Herman and Reverend Lewis Thompson presiding.
Burial will be in Brown County Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Jesse Watson
Nashville resident Jesse L. Watson died Wednesday, February 10, 1999, at his home. He was 79.
Mr. Watson was born May 8, 1919, in Bartholomew County to Harry and Mary Alice Settles Watson.
He and Wilma Jean Shaw were married August 27, 1979, in Birdstown, Tennessee. She survives in Brown County.
Mr. Watson had worked in production at Arvin Industries in Franklin for 33 years, retiring in February 1983.
He was a member of the Carpenters, Jointers and Fitters Union Local 2993 in Indianapolis.
Mr. Watson, a United States Army veteran of World War II, was a life member of the Brown County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.
Other survivors include three daughters, Shirley A. Brown of Edinburgh, Mary Alice Jarrett of Shelbyville and Wilma Fay Bain of Bargersville; three sons, George David Watson of Morgantown, Ronald L. Watson of Greenwood and William Jay Watson of Speedway; a brother, Kenneth Watson of Trafalgar; 25 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Myra Watson.
He was preceded in death by six brothers a son; and a great-grandchild.
The Reverend Mollie Clements conducted a service Friday, February 12, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in Johnson County's Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Thomas A. Zieg
An informal memorial gathering for Thomas A. Zieg, a Nashville lawyer who died February 6, 1999, at age 70, will be held Thursday, February 25, at the Brown County Inn in Nash-ville.
The remembrance, organized by the Brown County Bar Associ-ation, will begin at 5 p.m. in the motel's Town Hall room.
Friends and associates of Mr. Zieg and members of his family will be invited to share stories about his life with the others attending.
The public is invited.

Rachel Beaumont
Former Nashville resident Rachel M. Hoy Beaumont died Sunday, February 21, 1999, in Indianapolis. A resident of that city, she was 91.
Mrs. Beaumont was born March 25, 1907, in Nashville to William J. and Sarah S. McLary Hoy.
She was married to Leo M. Beaumont. He died in 1965.
Mrs. Beaumont was a homemaker.
She was a member of Centenary Christian Church in Indianapolis.
Survivors include three sons, Michael J. Beaumont, Kenneth L. Beaumont and Howard H. Beaumont; a daughter, Nancy L. Hemelgarn; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A service will be conducted today, February 24, at 11 a.m. in Harry W. Moore's Lawrence Chapel at Indianapolis, with burial in that city's Washington Park East Cemetery.
