Ruth S. Lewis
Brown County native Ruth S. Moberly Lewis died Saturday, March 6, 1999, in Phoenix, Arizona. She was 81.
Mrs. Lewis was born August 18, 1917, in Brown County to Oval "Dude" Moberly and Sharlet L. Shipley Moberly.
She first married Paul Taggart in 1943. He died in 1972. She later married a widower, Lawrence Lewis. He died in 1986.
Survivors include two sons, David Taggart of Iowa and Steven Taggart of Wisconsin; two daughters, Judy Taggart of Colorado and Shirley Bishop of Arizona; a brother, Dale Moberly of Nashville; and a sister, Mary Lou Stevens of Poland.
Services were conducted Thursday, March 11, in Indianapolis.
Burial was in that city's Washington Park Cemetery.

Aline McAllister
Brown County Community Care Center resident Aline Monroe McAllister died Sunday morning, March 14, 1999, at the center in Salt Creek Park. She was 97.
For several years she had lived in a log cabin on Annandale Drive.
Mrs. McAllister was born February 23, 1902, in Chacosa Junction, Colorado to Edwin Monroe and Cora Grubb Monroe. She grew up in the western Gibson County community of Oakland City.
She was first married Hubert Miller. In later years she wed Perry McAllister. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. McAllister attended Oakland City College and Indiana State University in Terre Haute before entering the teaching profession.
She taught music and art classes in public schools for 26 years before retiring. She also taught at Oakland City College.
Mrs. McAllister was a member of General Baptist Church in Oakland City and Brown County Retired Teachers. She was a former member of the Brown County Art Guild in Nashville.
Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn North Miller of Indianapolis; a grandson, Craig Miller of Indianapolis; and a cousin, Helen Couts of Evansville.
Ora Johnson will lead a service Thursday, March 18, at 10 a.m. in Oakland City's Montgomery Cemetery.
Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Dorothy Cochrum Heidt Art Scholarship at Oakland City University, Oakland City, Indiana, 47660, or to the donor's choice of charities.

Mavis McDonald
Former Brown County resident Mavis Ann Meigs Waddups McDonald died Friday, February 26, 1999, at her home in Mitchell, Nebraska. She was 47.
Mrs. McDonald was born January 8, 1952, to Stanford and Brenda Meigs. Her mother survives in Naples, Florida.
She was married to Jim McDonald. He survives in Nebraska.
Mrs. McDonald had been a devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed plants and animals.
She also enjoyed crocheting.
Other survivors include two daughters, Ruth Reynolds of Anderson and Georgia Waddups of Mitchell, Nebraska; a son, Garth Waddups of Mitchell, Nebraska; and a good friend, Linda Cook.
Jones Mortuary in Mitchell, Nebraska handled arrangements.

Betty McMasters
Brown County native Betty Sue Smith McMasters died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. A resident of O'Fallon, Illinois, she was 62.
Mrs. McMasters was born June 29, 1936, in Brown County to Ora A. and Helen White Smith.
She was married to John H. McMasters. He survives in Illinois.
Mrs. McMasters was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Belleville, Illinois and Prairie Porcelain Painters Guild.
Other survivors include two sons, Douglas A. McMasters of Saugus, California and Bryon J. McMasters of O'Fallon, Illinois; two daughters, Pamela A. Higgenbotham of Belleville, Illinois and Sandra K. Harper of O'Fallon, Illinois; two brothers, Ora A. Smith Jr. of Nashville and Richard L. Smith of Spencer; three sisters, Geneva Dinsmore of Nashville, Judy Burroughs and Kathy Hollis, both of Columbus; and five grandchildren, Jennifer N. Higgenbotham, Matthew T. McMasters, Benjamin J. McMasters, Rebecca G. Harper and Ashley Harper.
Pastor Daryl Gressel led a service Tuesday, March 16, at North Salem United Methodist Church.
Burial was in David Cemetery near Nashville.
Pete Gaerdner Funeral Home in Belleville, Illinois was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Paul Pierce
Former Brown County resident Paul M. Pierce died Tuesday morning, March 9, 1999, at Washington Nursing Center in Daviess County. A resident of Washington, he was 79.
Mr. Pierce was born May 27, 1919, in Martinsville to Oliver and Emma Sichting Pierce.
He and Mabel A. Lorrison were married November 20, 1942. She died April 4, 1989.
Mr. Pierce was educated in the Brown County schools.
He had worked at U.S. Railway, and was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Asian Pacific Theater.
He was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include two sons, William "Bill" Pierce of Madison, Mississippi and Randy Pierce of Oak Grove, Kentucky; two daughters, Cathey Hardy and Debbie Smith, both of Washington; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The Reverend Ralph Tomson led a service Thursday, March 11, at Ed Lee Mortuary.
Burial was in Daviess County's Oak Grove Cemetery.

Catherine Pottorff
Catherine F. Pottorff, the mother of Helmsburg Road resident Stephen Lee Pottorff, died Wednesday morning, March 10, 1999, at Heritage House Nursing Home in Martinsville. A life-long resident of that city, she was 79.
Mrs. Pottorff was born May 19, 1919, in Martinsville to Jacob and Lula Collier Fogleman.
She and Verlin M. Pottorff were married June 3, 1939. He died February 6, 1990.
Mrs. Pottorff, a homemaker, was a member of Trinity Church of the Nazarene in Morgan County.
She enjoyed cooking.
Mrs. Pottorff is survived by another son, Michael V. Pottorff of Martinsville; three brothers, Guy Fogleman, Wilbur Fogleman and Henry Fogleman, all of Martinsville; three grandchildren, Michele Cox, Rebecca Pottorff and Robert Dale "Bob" Betts; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Richard Fogleman; and a sister, Louise Bailey.
The Reverend Jeff Sexton and Pastor Burt Brock conducted a service Saturday morning, March 13, at Neal and Summers Mortuary in Martinsville.
Burial was in that city's New South Park Cemetery.

Florence Allen
Life-long Morgantown resident Florence R. Allen died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at Kennedy Living Center in Martinsville. She was 94.
Mrs. Allen was born September 25, 1904, in Morgan County to Fredrick Phillips and Mary M. Hiestand.
She and Ray I. Allen were married November 29, 1922, in Mooresville. He died July 25, 1989.
In her early years, she had worked as a sales clerk at L.S. Ayres in Indianapolis. In 1952, Mrs. Allen and her husband opened Green Hill Drive-In Restaurant in Morgantown. They operated the business until 1966.
Later Mrs. Allen worked as a cook for Delta Upsilon Fraternity House in Bloomington from 1966 until 1977 when she retired.
She was a member of Morgantown Christian Church and Indianapolis Good Sams Camp Club.
Mrs. Allen enjoyed sewing and other crafts. She also enjoyed camping and was an avid basketball fan.
Survivors include a daughter, Saundra K. Morse of Morgantown; a sister, Grace Dillon of Monrovia; six grandchildren, Greg Voshell of Indianapolis, Brad Voshell of Morgantown, Mathew Morse of Martinsville, Scott Morse of Bloomington, Rick Morse of Morgantown and Kara Clemens of Bloomington; six great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, David Phillips and Ray Phillips; a sister, Hazel Bean; and a daughter, Lou Voshell, who died December 26, 1982.
The Reverend Burt Brock conducted a service Saturday morning, March 20, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in that community's East Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Morgantown Christian Church, Post Office Box 306, Morgantown, Indiana 46160.

Alta J. Bates
Alta J. Bates died Thursday afternoon, March 18, 1999, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Charleston, Illinois. A resident of that city, she was 80.
Mrs. Bates left many survivors in Brown County.
She was born November 29, 1918, in Mattoon, Illinois to Charles F. and Lena Henson Calhoun.
She and Lewis E. Bates were married in 1940. He died in 1977.
Mrs. Bates was a homemaker. She enjoyed bowling and crafts such as embroidery and needlepoint.
Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Sue Perkins of Nashville; nine grandchildren, Lori Ann Morgan, Tim Perkins and Scott Perkins, all of Nashville, Beth Ann Burke of Arcola, Illinois, Lisa Bates, Amy Bates, Kris Bates and Greg Bates, all of Mattoon, Illinois, Becky Bates of Champaign, Illinois; and four great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Morgan, Elijah Perkins, Kayla Perkins and Michael Perkins, all of Nashville.
She was preceded in death by a son, Lewis E. Bates Jr.; three grandsons, Matthew Perkins, Mark Perkins and Michael Perkins; four brothers; and two sisters.
The Reverend Robert Hackler led a service Sunday afternoon, March 21, at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston, Illinois.
Burial was in that community's Mound Cemetery.

Shirley Cannon
Shirley Ann Stevens Cannon died Sunday, March 14, 1999, at her home in Indianapolis. She was 66.
Mrs. Cannon left survivors in Brown County.
She was born November 9, 1932, in Columbus to Jesse and Margaret Baumer Stevens.
She and Gene "Joe" Cannon were married October 19,. 1957. He survives in Marion County.
Mrs. Cannon had worked in sales at L.S. Ayres store in Greenwood for 30 years, retiring in 1995.
Other survivors include a son, William A. Hedges of Indianapolis; three daughters, Gail L. Joseph and Donna J. Johnson, both of Brown County and Angela M. Cannon of Indianapolis; a brother, James Stevens of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A service was conducted Wednesday, March 17, at G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home in Indianapolis.
Entombment was in that city's Washington Park East Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Hospice, 438 South Emerson Avenue, Greenwood, Indiana 46143.

Hester Dugan
Brown County Community Care Center resident Hester J. Dugan died Saturday afternoon, March 20, 1999, at the center in Salt Creek Park. She was 93.
She had lived in Nashville's Parkview Add-ition.
Mrs. Dugan was born April 19, 1905, in Edinburgh to Harry Cordray and Mary Cord-ray Nichols.
She and Law-rence Dugan were married May 5, 1945, in Indianapolis. He died in 1987.
Mrs. Dugan had worked at the Indiana Rating Bureau and at St. Roch Catholic Church.
She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church on State Road 135 North.
Mrs. Dugan was graduated from Edinburgh High School and Bowling Green Business College in Kentucky.
Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Pavey Dewey of Nashville; two grandchildren, Sherry Gore of Nashville and Vikki Kelley of Indianapolis; and seven great-grandchildren, Abi Gore of Bloomington and Rachel Kelley, Gabe Groves, Joshua Groves, Shaun Kelley and Aaron Kelley, all of Indianapolis.
Father Bill Stumpf conducted a service Tuesday morning, March 23, at Holy Cross Cemetery in Indianapolis.
The Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North was in charge of arrangements.

Charles Gatewood
Father Paul Koetter will conduct a memorial mass will be held Saturday, March 27, at 11 a.m., in St. Agnes Catholic Church on State Road 135 North for Charles E. Gatewood.
Mr. Gate-wood, a resident of Spearsville, died January 27, 1999, while wintering at Lake Buena Vista, Florida. He was 73.
He was born July 7, 1925, in Indianapolis. Mr. Gatewood and Margaret Wagner were married July 24, 1948. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Charles E. Gatewood II of Spearsville and John Allen Gatewood of Nashville; a daughter, Suzanne Zupancic of Morgantown; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Edward Harter
Morgantown resident Edward O. Harter died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at Morgan County Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. He was 92.
Mr. Harter was born September 7, 1906, in Waynesville, Illinois to William Asa and Grace H. Brallier Harter.
He first married Ethul Marie King. She died in 1977. He then married Lucy "Betty" Murphy. She died in 1995.
Mr. Harter had worked at J.I. Case Company in Rock Island, Illinois for 25 years before retiring.
After retirement, he worked as a self-employed plasterer.
Mr. Harter was graduated from Washington High School in Washington, Iowa.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald Harter of Astatula, Florida and William Harter of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and several grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Donald E. Harter.
The body was cremated.
Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown was in charge of arrangements.

Thelma Hornbaker
Brown County native Thelma V. Sink Hornbaker died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, in San Diego, California. A resident of that city, she was 81.
Mrs. Hornbaker was born July 7, 1917, in Brown County to Elbert and Pearl Lucas Deckard.
Her first husband, Robert Sink, preceded her in death. She later married Edward Hornbaker. He also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Hornbaker was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Lakeland, Florida.
Survivors include a son, Donald Sink Sr. of Indianapolis; three daughters, Janet Turner of Ellettsville, Patricia Hartley of Laughlin, Nevada and Judith Hughes of San Diego, California; a brother, James Stader of California; a sister, Helen Jones of Bloomington; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Verba Livingston and Jeannette Martin; and a brother, Herman Deckard.
A service was conducted Monday afternoon, March 22, at Day Mortuary in Bloomington.
Burial was in that city's Valhalla Memory Gardens.

Dorothy Hurst
Dorothy E. Hurst died Friday morning, March 19, 1999, at Columbus Health and Rehabilitation Center. A long-time resident of Edinburgh, she was 94.
Mrs. Hurst was born October 16, 1905, in Edinburgh to Samuel Elba and Nellie Hamblen Tabor. Her parents were natives of Brown County's Hamblen Township. She was a descendant of pioneer Job Hamblen.
She had been a member of the Edinburgh United Methodist Church and had worked at the Franklin United Methodist Home.
Survivors include a daughter, Janell Henderson of Edinburg; a brother, Joseph E. Hurst of Grand Ledge, Michigan; four grandchildren, Mark Henderson of Edinburgh, Rebecca Shafer of Fishers and Brenda Corr and Audrey Leece, both of Michigan; and six great-grandchildren.
The Reverend Byron Fritz conducted a service Tuesday afternoon, March 23, at Eskew-Eaton Funeral Home in Edinburgh.
Burial was in that city's Rest Haven Cemetery.
