Irma Church
Irma V. Church, the mother of Nineveh area resident Carlotta Nicholson, died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Community Hospital East in Indianapolis.
A resident of that city, she was 79.
Mrs. Church was born August 17, 1919, in Evansville to Jesse B. and Chloe Corn Low.
She was married to Victor M. Church. He died in August 1969.
Mrs. Church had worked as a certified medicine aide at Homeview Convalescent Center in Franklin for 10 years before retiring in 1981.
She had been a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Marion County.
Other survivors include four additional children, Judy Marsh of Terre Haute, Victoria Church of Indianapolis, David Church of Williford, Arkansas and Daniel Church of Greenwood; four siblings, Anne Stone of Anderson, Marjorie Ryan of Greenwood, Robert Low of Greenfield and Yvonne Low of Indianapolis; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Church was preceded in death by two sons, Jack Smith and Stephen Michael Church; and a brother, Jack Low.
A service was conducted Wednesday, April 21, in Ritter Avenue Free Methodist Church in Indianapolis.
G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home in Indianapolis was in charge of arrangements.
Burial was at Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Dan Daily
State Road 135 South resident Daniel M. "Dan" Daily died Wednesday morning, April 21, 1999, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident along State Road 46 East.
He was 24 and would have celebrated his birthday four days later.
Mr. Daily was born April 25, 1974, in Nashville to Peggy S. Wood. His mother survives in Nashville.
He had worked as a chef and musician at Caddie's in Columbus.
Mr. Daily was graduated from Brown County High School in 1992.
An honors student, he was also involved with the high school's distributive education program, or DECA.
Mr. Daily enjoyed playing the bass guitar.
Other survivors include his grandmother, Mary F. Wells of Nashville; his aunt, Betty J. Clark of Nineveh; his uncle, Terry L. Wood of Noblesville; and his half-sister, Kellie L. Daily of Elkhart.
A service was conducted Friday afternoon, April 23, at the Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North.
Burial was in Brown County Memorial Park Cemetery off Old State Road 46

Curtis Kean
Morgantown resident Curtis L. Kean died Friday, April 23, 1999, at his home. He was 70.
Mr. Kean was born October 18, 1928, in Russell Springs, Kentucky to Edgar and Mary Ada McQueary Kean.
He and Cleta Kinser were married August 21, 1950, in Franklin. She survives.
Mr. Kean had worked as a welder for Arvin Industries in Greenwood for 43 years, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of the Second Street Full Gospel Church in Martinsville.
Mr. Kean enjoyed playing Bluegrass music and watching sprint car racing.
He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed camping, mushroom hunting, his John Deere tractor and working on his farm.
Other survivors include three daughters, Patty Chappelow of Whiteland, Angie Gault of Morgantown and Cindy Helfinstine of Martinsville; two sons, Richard Kean of Martinsville and Allen Kean of Trafalgar; two brothers, Henry Kean of Trafalgar and Barry Kean of Columbus, Ohio; and 11 grandchildren.
Mr. Kean was preceded in death by two sisters, Allene Reeves and Nona Stevens; and four brothers, Ralph Kean, Joe Kean, Zeke Kean and James Kean.
The Reverend Mike Napier and Tex Clawson conducted a service Tuesday, April 27, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in that community's East Hill Cemetery.

Gona Lancaster
Trafalgar area resident Gona Ray Lancaster died unexpectedly Sunday, April 18, 1999, at his home. He was 74.
Mr. Lancaster was born September 18, 1924, in Seymour to John and Henrietta Lebline Lancaster.
He and Betty J. Weeks were married September 20, 1962, in Los Altos, California. She survives.
Mr. Lancaster had worked as a farm equipment mechanic at Trafalgar Hardware for 45 years, retiring in 1989.
He was graduated from Shields High School at Seymour in 1942.
Mr. Lancaster was a United States Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. When he was discharged from the military, he was a tech/sergeant.
Among his hobbies were trap shooting, gardening, hunting and fishing. In addition, Mr. Lancaster enjoyed working on his own Allis Chalmers "B" tractor.
Other survivors include a daughter, Susan R. Weddle of Morgantown; and two granddaughters, Kendra Weddle and Karlea Weddle.
Mr. Lancaster was preceded in death by two brothers, Walt Lancaster and Herb Lancaster; a half-brother, Raymond Lancaster; and five half-sisters.
The Reverend Burt Brock conducted a service Thursday morning, April 22, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was at Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Morgan County Heart Association, 1189 South Main Street, Martinsville, Indiana 46151.

Roger Markley
Artist Drive resident Major Roger B. Markley died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at his home. He was 78.
Mr. Markley was born February 25, 1921, in Bluffton to Dr. Herman R. and Beulah Markley.
He and Betty June Sheffer were married February 14, 1942. She survives in Nashville.
Mr. Markley was graduated from Portland High School in 1938.
He attended Ball State University and also studied at Oxford University in England before earning a Ph.D.
Mr. Markley had worked as a Certified Public Accountant before retiring.
He retired as a major in the United States Air Force. During the D-Day invasion in 1944, Mr. Markley served as a glider pilot with the 85th Air Squadron. He retired from military service after 39 years in 1980.
Mr. Markley was a member of the 437 Troop Carrier Group, Reserve Officers Association, National World War II Glider Pilots Association, Brown County Bald Eagles, Brown County Historical Society, Portland Order of the Eastern Star, Jay Lodge, Portland Masonic Lodge, and Nashville United Methodist Church.
He had been mentioned in the Who's Who in the Midwest in 1976.
Other survivors include two sons, Jeffrey Markley of Nashville and Rodney Lee Markley of Helmsburg; a daughter, Patrice Markley of Nashville; a grandson, Evon Daniel Markley; two brothers, Ferd O. Markley of Petersburg, Michigan and Jay D. Markley of Spartanburg, South Carolina; and a sister, Phyliss Woods of Pierceton.
The Reverend Neal Partain will conduct a service today, April 28, at 2 p.m. in Six Mile Cemetery at Bluffton.
A local service to remember Mr. Markley will be held Friday, April 30, at 11 a.m. in the Nashville United Methodist Church.
The Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Bartholomew County or Nashville United Methodist Church.

Irene Walker-Chitwood
Nashville resident Irene Walker-Chitwood died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at the Brown County Community Care Center in Salt Creek Park. She was 94.
Mrs. Walker-Chitwood was born June 28, 1904, in West Des Moines, Iowa to Hubert M. and Agnes Lucina Wellington Hefley.
She was first married to Ray D. Walker. He died in 1968.
Mrs. Walker-Chitwood had worked in hospitals.
She was a member of Nashville United Methodist Church, Business and Professional Women, the Garden Club and Republican Women.
Survivors include a daughter, Beatrice Lorraine Seibel of Nashville; and two grandchildren.
Mrs. Walker-Chitwood was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Roberta Seibel Maire.
A service will be conducted at a later date in the Nashville United Methodist Church.
The Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home in Nashville was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bobbie Seibel Maire Scholarship Fund, in care of National City Bank's Nashville branch.

Noah Webb
Noah Thomas Webb, the infant son of John E. and Melissa G. Redford Webb of Morgantown, died Sunday, April 18, 1999.
The 17-day-old infant is also survived by two brothers, Mitchell Webb and Johnny Webb; his grandfather, Jeffrey Redford; his grandmother, Brenda Williamson Hurin; and great-grandparents, Irene and Vernon Parks.
Funeral services were private.
Singleton and Herr Mortuary in Indianapolis was in charge of arrangements.

Judith Anderson
Judith L. Anderson died suddenly Friday evening, April 30, 1999, at Memorial Hospital in Seymour. A resident of Freetown, she was 46.
Mrs. Anderson was raised in Brown County.
She was born January 7, 1953, in Rensselaer to Dean and Louise Smith Greathouse.
She and Terry V. Anderson were married June 6, 1970, in Freetown. He survives.
Mrs. Anderson had lived in Jackson County since her marriage.
She had been a member of Freetown Church of Christ.
Mrs. Anderson had worked as a registered nurse in the birthing center at Columbus Regional Hospital.
Other survivors include four children, Terry Vaughn Anderson II, Tasha Maxie, Todd William Anderson and Melissa Dawn Anderson, all of Freetown; four grandchildren, Brittney Anderson, Terry Vaughn Anderson III, Ty Maxie and Lance Anderson; and her sister, Vickie Lawson of Austin.
The Reverend George Greathouse and Reverend Bill Teagarden led a service Tuesday afternoon, May 4, at the Freetown Church of Christ.
Burial was in that community’s Freetown Cemetery.
Winklepleck-Weesner Funeral Home at Brownstown was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Freetown Church of Christ.

Irene Chitwood
A memorial service in memory of Irene Lucine Walker Chitwood will be held Saturday, May 8, at 11 a.m. in Nashville United Methodist Church.
The church’s pastor, Neal Partain, will officiate at the ceremony.
Mrs. Chitwood died Sunday morning, April 25, 1999, at the Brown County Community Care Center in Salt Creek Park. She was 94.
She was born June 28, 1904, in West Des Moines, Iowa to Hubert M. Hefley and Agnes Lucina Wellington.
Mrs. Chitwood is survived by a daughter, Beatrice Lorraine Seibel of Nashville; and two grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bobbie Seibel Maire Scholarship Fund, in care of Nashville’s National City Bank branch.

Leslie Crockett
Leslie S. Crockett, the brother of Nineveh area resident Oscar Crockett, died Wednesday morning, April 28, 1999, at Veterans Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky after a long illness. A resident of Brownstown, he was 68.
Mr. Crockett was born May 16, 1930, in Lee County, Virginia to Walter R. and Lucy Hopkins Crockett.
He and Elizabeth Maynard were married June 29, 1957, in Tazewell, Tennessee. She survives.
Mr. Crockett had worked as a laborer until retiring. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a member of Seymour Community Church.
Other survivors include six children, Danny Reynolds of Seymour, Diane Linne of Georgia, Lanny Reynolds of Taylorsville, Max Reynolds of North Vernon and David Crockett and Kevin Crockett, both of Norman; another brother, Paul Crockett of Medora; 21 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The Reverend Frank Holt led a service Saturday, May 1, at Spurgeon Funeral Home in Brownstown.
Burial was in Jackson County’s Clearspring Cemetery.

William Emery
Old Haggard Road resident William H. Emery died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at his home. He was 103.
Mr. Emery was one of the last of a handful of World War I veterans surviving in the area. He is believed to be the last "great war" survivor to have lived in Brown County.
Mr. Emery was born July 3, 1895, in New Augusta to John and Martha Toler Emery.
His parents lived in a log house where Eagle Creek Park is now in Marion County.
He and Dorothy P. Brown were married October 29, 1939, in Louisville, Kentucky. She survives.
Mr. Emery had worked as a barber before retiring. He had been manager at Nick Hurst Barbershop on West Washington Street for 45 years, retiring in 1960.
He was a member of Spearsville Road Church of Christ. Mr. Emery formerly belonged to the Warman Avenue Methodist Church in Indianapolis. He was a charter member of Wayne American Legion Post in Indianapolis and Morgantown Senior Citizens Center.
During World War I, Mr. Emery served in the cavalry, where he broke and trained horses and mules.
Soon after he was discharged May 16, 1919, the cavalry was abandoned because motor vehicles made transportation of supplies easier than horses or mules.
The mules were trained as pack animals. He learned this early in his life, while working with his father, who was a blacksmith.
After leaving the United States Army, Mr. Emery traveled around the country. In 1998, he received a 20th Century Hero Award by the Veterans Day Council of Indianapolis for his selfless contributions during the "great" war.
Other survivors include two sons, Bob Owings of Morgantown and Bill Owings of Indianapolis; a daughter, Ada Jane Pollard of Indianapolis; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
The Reverend Gene Warman and Reverend Perry Hurst led a service Friday morning, April 30, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in that community’s East Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Morgantown Senior Center, Post Office Box 542, Morgantown, Indiana 46160.

Gerald Fettig
Gerald Robert Fettig, the father of Nashville resident Cinda Castle, died Saturday morning, May 1, 1999, at his home in Columbus. He was 79.
Mr. Fettig was born October 10, 1919, in Clifford to Robert George and Anna Kaatz Fettig.
He had moved to Columbus from Lewiston, Michigan a little more than a year ago.
He and Dorothy Beaham were married November 26, 1947. She survives in Bartholomew County.
Mr. Fettig had owned and operated Fettig Pump and Well Service at Union Lake, Michigan. He had also served as chief of the Whitelake Township Fire Department in Michigan.
Other survivors include a son, Jerry L. Fettig of Whitelake, Michigan; two additional daughters, Wendi MacDonald of Commerce, Michigan and Debra Miller of Leigh Acres, Florida; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Private services will be held at Lakeside Cemetery in Whitelake, Michigan.
Myers Funeral Service, Hathaway-Myers Chapel in Columbus was in charge of arrangements.

Sylvia Flake
Morgantown native Sylvia D. Flake died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at Grandview Convalescent Center in Martinsville. She was 93.
Mrs. Flake was born April 16, 1906, in Morgantown to Julius and Dicy White Castner.
She and Harry L. Flake were married November 19, 1919. He died May 5, 1976.
Mrs. Flake had been a homemaker.
She was a member of Martinsville’s Maple Grove Christian Church.
Mrs. Flake enjoyed crocheting.
Survivors include a son, Maurice R. Flake Sr. of Martinsville; a daughter, Emma Rose Jones of Indianapolis; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
The Reverend Charles Flake conducted a service Tuesday, April 27, at Neal and Summers Mortuary in Martinsville.
Burial was in that city’s Centennial Cemetery.
