Verlon Woodall
Webber Hill Road resident Verlon C. Woodall died Sunday, May 9, 1999, at his home. He was 68.
Mr. Woodall was born July 5, 1930, in Pulaski County, Kentucky to Melvin S. and Mary Jane Bradley Woodall.
He first married May Fox June 23, 1951. She died May 17, 1983. He and Lillie Wade Jones were married September 27, 1983, in Tennessee. She died June 7, 1998.
Mr. Woodall had worked at Robertson Construction Company in Franklin for 27 years, retiring in 1992.
Other survivors include two daughters, Connie S. Bray of Nineveh and Catherine Bowman of Nashville; three sons, Kenneth Woodall of Nashville, Earl Woodall of Morgantown and Tim Woodall of Indianapolis; 20 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Glendon Woodall of Campbellsville, Kentucky, Allen Woodall of Gosport and Cecil Woodall of Greenwood; and a sister, Hazel Bradley of Greenwood.
The Reverend Leroy Collins will conduct a service today, May 12, at 11 a.m. in the Meredith-Clark Funeral Home at Morgantown.
Burial will take place in Hamblen Township’s Goshen Cemetery.

Long-time local banker dies in Bloomington
Former Nashville State Bank President Martin K. Saari died Monday evening, May 10, 1999, at Bloomington Hospital. He had recently moved to that city from his home on Artist Drive. Mr. Saari was 68 years old.
He was born November 23, 1930, in Rochester, Michigan to Andrew and Selma Marie Pekkala Saari.
His wife, Beverly Larson Saari, died in February 1993.
Mr. Saari had been involved in the banking business for 30 years. After the Nashville State Bank was sold to Trustcorp, he went to work at Citizens Bank’s Nashville branch. He retired from Citizens in 1996.
He had been a member of the Brown County Rotary Club, American Legion and Lions Club.
Mr. Saari was a veteran of the United States Army Corps of Engineers and saw stateside service during the Korean War.
He remembered his military service in January 1997.
"I was a draftee. I learned a lot in the service. It was the perfect place for a young man not yet decided on a future path. Upon discharge, it provided me an education through the G.I. Bill," he said.
Survivors include a son, Andrew M. Saari of Carmel; two daughters, Jelene Campbell of Bloomington and Captain Andrea Harris of Dupont, Washington; and two brothers, Veikko Saari of Redmond, Washington and Oliver Saari of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota.
The Reverend Darrell Miller led a memorial service Tuesday morning, May 18, at the Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North.
Singleton and Herr Mortuary in Indianapolis and the Cremation Society of Indiana was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Brown County YMCA, in care of the Brown County Community Foundation, Post Office Box 191, Nashville, Indiana 47448.

Laura C. Law
Morgantown resident Laura C. Law died Friday, May 14, 1999, at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. She was 88.
Mrs. Law was born September 18, 1910, in Scottsville, Kentucky to Emzire Fletcher Meador and Clara Florence Sullivan Meador.
She and Roy E. Law were married November 13, 1927, in Haysville, Tennessee. He died April 27, 1978.
Mrs. Law was a homemaker.
She had been a member of the Thompson Road Baptist Church in Indianapolis.
Mrs. Law enjoyed quilting and flower and vegetable gardening.
Survivors include a daughter, Regeneau Tapp of Scottsville, Kentucky; six sons, Cillous Law of Lafayette, Tennessee, Norman C. Law of Indianapolis and Jackie Law, Milton Law, Eddie Law and Dannie Law, all of Morgantown; 22 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Eunice Gilliam, Lois D. Jones and Christine Brown, all of Scottsville and Mary Law of Trafalgar; and two brothers, Carline Meador and Earl Meador, both of Scottsville, Kentucky.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Danna Bolt; two great-grandchildren, Heather Law and Miranda Law; three brothers; and two sisters.
Pastor Anthony Slutz led a service Monday morning, May 17, at the Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.

Curtis Underwood
Curtis Lee Underwood died Wednesday, May 12, 1999, in Noblesville. A resident of Martinsville, he was 33.
Mr. Underwood’s maternal grandparents hailed from Brown County.
He was born March 18, 1966, in Martinsville to Curtis Underwood Jr. and Helen Sisson Underwood. His parents survive in Martinsville.
He and Debbie Gregory were married July 6, 1986. She survives.
Mr. Underwood was graduated from Martinsville High School in 1985.
He had worked as a dump truck driver and mechanic for C.J.’s Dump Truck Service in Indianapolis.
Mr. Underwood enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Morgan County Conservation Club.
Other survivors include a son, Jeremy Clark of Martinsville; a daughter, Ashley Underwood of Martinsville; a brother, Frank Barnhill of Gainesville, Georgia; three sisters, Stella Clark of Indianapolis, Cindy Huff of Martinsville and Susie Thomas of Stockbridge, Georgia; and his paternal grandparents, Curtis and Dora Tipton Underwood of Calhoun, Georgia.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Virgil and Nellie Chitwood Sisson.
A service was conducted Sunday afternoon, May 16, at the Costin Funeral Chapel in Martinsville.
Burial was in that city’s Centennial Cemetery.

Robert Cleek
Morgantown resident Robert M. Cleek died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at the Heritage House Convalescent Center in Martinsville. He was 77.
Mr. Cleek was born September 6, 1921, in Henry County to Harvey and Elsie Miller Cleek.
He and Wenonah J. Lawson were married July 3, 1947, in New Castle. She survives.
Mr. Cleek had worked in the maintenance department of Nineveh-Hensley-Jackson United School Corp-oration for 12 years, retiring in 1984.
Before that, he had worked at Toursley-Bixler Construction Company in Indianapolis for 15 years during the 1960s and 1970s.
Mr. Cleek had been a member of the Morgantown United Methodist Church and Morgantown Senior Citizens Center.
He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II.
Other survivors include a son, Robert "Gene" Cleek of Dixon, California; two sisters, Georgia Johns and Jackie Sue Barker, both of Richmond; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Cleek was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell Cleek and Faye Clark; and a sister, Helen Ford.
The Reverend Wayne Tucker conducted a service Friday morning, May 21, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Entombment was at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Johnson County.

Jerry Deckard
Brown County native Jerry G. "Bumper" Deckard died Wednesday afternoon, May 19, 1999, at his home in Carrollton, Kentucky after an illness of several months. He was 62.
Mr. Deckard was born December 11, 1936, in Nashville to Art and Loratta Deckard. His father survives in Inverness, Florida.
He and Wilma Chandler were married June 4, 1981, in Carrollton, Kentucky. She survives.
Mr. Deckard had worked as a truck driver for Kentucky Hauling Company before retiring.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Alexandria, Kentucky and Carrollton’s First Baptist Church.
Other survivors include two daughters, Patty Callis and Pam Bay, both of Bloomington; two sons, David Deckard of Bloomington and Danny Deckard of Helmsburg; three step-sons, Jeff Beach, Larry Beach and Barry Beach, all of Carrollton, Kentucky; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Deckard was preceded in death by his mother; a brother; and a sister.
Chaplain Billy Bussel led a service Friday afternoon, May 21, at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home in Carrollton, Kentucky.
Burial was in that community’s I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

David Eldridge
Trafalgar area resident David Lee Eldridge died Friday, May 21, 1999, at his home after a short illness. He was 47.
Mr. Eldridge was born October 3, 1951, in Franklin to Giles L. El-dridge Sr. and Freida Cunningham Eldridge McClain.
He and Dianna Lynn Conner were married July 26, 1982, in Trafalgar. She survives.
Mr. Eldridge was graduated from Green-wood High School in 1969. He also received a degree from Lincoln Tech-nical College, where he studied small engine repair.
He had served as the first superintendent of Trafalgar’s water and sewage facilities from March 1997 until October 1998. Before that, Mr. Eldridge served as assistant superintendent of Morgantown’s water utility from 1991 until 1997.
He had also worked as a Union carpenter with Lam Fab in Indianapolis for 20 years.
Mr. Eldridge was licensed and certified in water and waste management and had been a member of the Water Environmental Association.
He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church near Trafalgar.
Mr. Eldridge was active in Johnson County 4-H and helped found the Udders Up Dairy Goat Club.
Fly fishing and camping were among his hobbies.
He had also been in an experimental A.L.S. (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) program in the neurology department at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis.
Other survivors include two daughters, Gail Lynn Eldridge of Greenwood and Becky S. Rodgers of Trafalgar; three sons, Lee Rodgers, Charles E. Eldridge and Jacob D. Eldridge, all of Trafalgar; two sisters, Helen Cline and Mary Bridwell, both of Greenwood and Debbie Shay of Whiteland; a brother, Giles Eldridge Jr. of Kokomo; and a half-brother, Conrad Harding of Jacksboro, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his father, who died in 1951; his mother, who died in April; and a sister, Barbara Abbott, who died in 1995.
The Reverend John "Buddy" Cave and Reverend Ed Pearson conducted a service Monday morning, May 24, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in that community’s East Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the A.L.S. Foundation of Indiana, in care of Mary Ann Browning, 8385 Hampton Circle, Indianapolis, Indiana 46256.

Dolly Fritch
Dolly J. Fritch died Friday, May 21, 1999, at Hearne Health Care Center in Morgantown. A resident of that city, she was 88.
Mrs. Fritch was born January 24, 1911, in Brown County to James and Prudie Russ Fritch.
She and Clay Fritch were married June 12, 1928, in Brown County. He died February 21, 1999.
Mrs. Fritch was a homemaker. She had also helped her husband with his residential home building business in Florida and Indiana before retiring in 1970.
The couple had spent their winters in Okeechobee, Florida for the past several years.
Survivors include a daughter, Colleen Hollett of Morgantown; four grandchildren, Gary Hollett of Morgantown, Linda G. Moore of Deltona, Florida, Cheryl L. Basham of Fort Worth, Texas and Janet L. Gault of Trafalgar; 13 grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by a son, Forrest Fritch; two sisters, Mary Voorheis and Julia Morgan; and two brothers, Russell Fritch and Tony Fritch.
The Reverend Burt Brock will conduct a service Saturday, May 29, at 10 a.m. in Meredith-Clark Funeral Home at Morgantown.
Burial will be in Brown County’s Bear Creek Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders, Post Office Box 547, Columbus, Indiana 47202.

James F. Gindling
James F. Gindling, the father of Brown County resident Kenneth A. Gindling, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at his home in Whiteland. He was 68.
Mr. Gindling was born October 30, 1930, in Sunman to William and Rosena Lambert Gindling.
He and Viola J. Robbins were married September 9, 1950. She survives.
Mr. Gindling had worked as a foreman at Detroit Diesel Allison Plant in Indianapolis for 31 years, retiring in 1981.
He had owned Jim’s Woodshop in Whiteland since retiring.
Mr. Gindling was a member of Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Monsignor Sheridan Council, both in Greenwood.
Other survivors include two daughters, Cheryl K. Rutledge of Whiteland and Sandy L. Smith of Gypsum, Colorado; two additional sons, Paul E. Gindling of Whiteland and Daniel J. Gindling of San Diego, California; two brothers, Lawrence Gindling of Sun City, Arizona and Robert Gindling of Sunman; two sisters, Mildred Fox of Gilford and Marian Gutzwiller of Batesville; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Monsignor Harold Knueven led a service Saturday, May 22, at Our Lady of Greenwood Catholic Church.
Burial was in Johnson County’s Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory in Greenwood was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Golden Jubilee Campaign, in care of Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic Church, 335 South Meridian Street, Greenwood, Indiana 46143.

Beulah Robinson
Beulah H. Robinson, the mother of Nashville resident Donna Cannon, died Monday afternoon, May 17, 1999, at Columbus Regional Hospital. A resident of North Vernon, she was 91.
Mrs. Robinson was born May 19, 1907, in Edinburgh to Sylvan W. and Ollie M. Chambers Lafever.
She had worked at the old CP Electronics and at Lucas Brothers Restaurant.
Mrs. Robinson is also survived by another daughter, Carol Ritter of Columbus; seven grandchildren, Richard Bierlein of Louisville, Kentucky, Danny Bierlein of Cadet, Missouri, David Bierlein of Tampa, Florida, Diane Short of Indianapolis, Donna Johnson and Toni Byrum, both of Manchester, Tennessee and Cheri Perkins of Columbus; 21 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Godfrey Lafever; and a great-great-granddaughter.
The Reverend Homer Whited led a service Friday afternoon, May 21, at Barkes, Inlow and Weaver Funeral Home in Columbus.
Burial was in that city’s Garland Brook Cemetery.

Meredith Rogers
Life-long Brown County resident Meredith Jane Rogers died Friday morning, May 21, 1999, at her home on North Johnson Street. She was 86.
Mrs. Rogers was born November 2, 1912, in Nashville to James McGrayel and Ruby Campbell.
She was married to Paul Rogers. He died May 26, 1983.
Mrs. Rogers had worked at Cummins Engine Company in Columbus from 1958 until 1977.
She had been a member of the Nashville Christian Church since 1923.
Mrs. Rogers was a member of the Chere Amie Chapter of the American Business Womens’ Association, Indiana Home Demonstration Club Chorus and Tuesday Night Bridge Club.
She had been active as a Girl Scout leader.
Mrs. Rogers enjoyed square dancing, growing roses and playing Bridge.
Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Miller of Columbus and Celia Kraatz of Champaign, Illinois; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A service was conducted Tuesday afternoon, May 25, at the Nashville Christian Church.
Burial was in Nashville’s Greenlawn Cemetery.
Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bartholomew County Area Hospice, 2400 East 17th Street, Columbus, Indiana 47201.

Clifford Bales
Clifford E. Bales died Sunday, May 23, 1999, at Bloomington Hospital. A resident of that city, he was 88.
Mr. Bales was born October 6, 1910, in Monroe County’s Gilmore Ridge area to Samuel and Lydia Chandler Bales.
He was married to Dorothy Archey. She preceded him in death.
Mrs. Bales’ family hailed from northern Brown County.
Mr. Bales had worked as a self-employed contractor. He had also worked at the Showers Furniture Factory.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirley A. Deckard of Bloomington; two grandchildren, Kimberly Deckard-Holmes and Daran Deckard, both of Bloomington; and two great-grandchildren, Stacey Ratts and Sandra Hacker, both of Bloomington.
The Reverend J. Bruce Kelley led a service Wednesday afternoon, May 26, at Day Mortuary in Bloomington.
Burial was in Brown County’s Unity Baptist Church Cemetery.

D. Elston Beal
D. Elston Beal, the father of Nashville resident Joe G. Beal, died Monday, May 24, 1999, at his home in Indianapolis. He was 83.
Mr. Beal was born March 3, 1916, in Tennessee to James M. and Amy Clairdy Beal.
He was married to Allie Mae Blankenship. She survives in Marion County.
Mr. Beal had worked as a welder/pipefitter at Eli Lilly and Company in Indianapolis for 34 years, retiring in 1978.
He had been a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Greenwood and Prospect Masonic Lodge.
Other survivors include a daughter, Vivian F. Miller of California; two sisters, Lola Mae Neal and Christine Walker, both of Kentucky; two brothers, James L. Beal and Roy R. Beal, both of Indianapolis; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A service was conducted Thursday afternoon, May 27, at G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home in Indianapolis.
Burial was in Johnson County’s Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
