Marlene Smoot
State Road 135 North resident Marlene Smoot died Thursday, November 25, 1999, at Vencor Health Care in Greenwood. She was 63.
Mrs. Smoot was born March 11, 1936, in Indianapolis to Lawrence and Francis Peacock.
She and Hugh H. Smoot were married May 3, 1956, in Indianapolis. He died January 3, 1977.
Mrs. Smoot was a homemaker. She had worked at Hardees Restaurant in Nashville from 1988 until 1995. Mrs. Smoot worked at For Bare Feet sock factory at Helmsburg in 1996.
She was graduated from St. John’s High School in Indianapolis in 1954.
Survivors include three sons, Hugh Michael Smoot and Mark Anthony Smoot, both of Brown County and Bruce Wayne Smoot of Morgantown; two brothers, Larry Peacock of Indianapolis and Tom Peacock of Cincinnati, Ohio; and 10 grandchildren.
The Reverend Fred Harrison led a service Sunday afternoon, November 28, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in that community’s East Hill Cemetery.
Dica Crouch
County native Dica Mae Crouch died Saturday morning, December 4, 1999, at ExtendaCare of Columbus. A resident of that city, she was 83.
Mrs. Crouch was born September 22, 1916, in Brown County to Thomas E. and Margaret L. Wilkerson Curry.
She and Dwight J. Crouch were married January 24, 1934. He died March 25, 1997.
Mrs. Crouch was graduated from Indiana Business College.
She had worked for Sears and the Bartholomew County Treasurer’s office before retiring.
Mrs. Crouch had been a member of East Columbus United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Crouch of Columbus and Dick Crouch and Rick Crouch, both of Shelbyville; a daughter, Rosalie Waltermire of Columbus; two brothers, Woodrow Curry and Belvie Curry, both of Columbus; two sisters, Ica Casey of Franklin and Iva Brown of Bloomington; 14 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Two sons preceded her in death.
A service was conducted Tuesday afternoon, December 7, at Barkes, Inlow and Weaver Funeral Home in Columbus.
Burial was in that city’s Garland Brook Cemetery.

Anna B. Emerick
Former county resident Anna B. Clemmer Emerick died Wednesday afternoon, December 1, 1999, in Indianapolis. A resident of that city, she was 73.
Ms. Emerick was born January 24, 1926, in Johnson County to Ola Clemmer and Nellie May Parsley Clemmer.
She had worked as a computer operator at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis for 30 years, retiring in 1984.
Ms. Emerick served in the United States Navy Reserves from 1950 until 1958.
Survivors include a son, Dave Emerick; and a daughter, Nancy Armstrong.
A service was conducted Saturday afternoon, December 4, at Flanner and Buchanan Washington Park East Mortuary in Indianapolis.
Burial was in that city’s Washington Park East Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Barbara Harden
Barbara Jean Harden, the sister of Nashville resident Juanita Robertson, died Thursday, December 2, 1999, at her home in Naples, Florida. She was 68.
Mrs. Harden was born January 14, 1931, in Bloomington to Orville and Blanche Roberts Moore.
She was married to Steve Harden. He survives in Florida.
Mrs. Harden was head cook at Indiana University for 25 years.
She had been a member of the American Legion in Bloomington and the Elks Lodge in Bonita Springs, Florida.
Other survivors include two sons, James S. Harden Jr. of Ellettsville and Michael R. Harden of Evansville; a daughter, Marilyn Lawson of Bloomington; four brothers, Paul Moore of Martinsville, Dale Moore of Heltonville and Charles Moore and Raymond Moore, both of Bloomington; another sister, Helen Sipes of Bloomington; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Harden was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Services in Indiana will be conducted at a later date.

Robert Katz
Robert N. Katz, the father of Brown County resident Robert Katz, died Wednesday, December 1, 1999, at Bloomington Hospital. A resident of that city, he was 57.
Mr. Katz was born October 29, 1942, in Mattoon, Illinois to Vernie and Irene Bowlund Katz.
He was married to Diana Honeycutt. She survives.
Mr. Katz is survived by another son, Chance Katz of Bloomington; and a brother, Vincent Lenore Katz of Oak Park, Illinois.
His parents and a brother, Vern L. Katz, preceded him in death.
The Reverend Kim Norris led a service Saturday, December 4, at Day Mortuary in Bloomington.
Burial was in Monroe County’s Clear Creek Cemetery.
Evelyn Lory
Morgantown resident Evelyn L. Lory died Thursday, December 2, 1999, at her home. She was 81.
Mrs. Lory was born March 13, 1918, in Martinsville to Frank and Nora Unversaw Bray.
She and Henry P. Lory were married August 28, 1937, in Jeffersonville. He died January 13, 1998.
In the days before large companies, Mrs. Lory had been an operator for the Morgantown telephone exchange. Later, she worked as a clerk at the Morgantown Post Office for more than 20 years, retiring in 1979.
She had been a member of the Morgantown Baptist Church.
Mrs. Lory was a former president of the Morgantown School parent-teacher organization. She enjoyed reading and traveling. Attending horse shows was another of her hobbies.
She was graduated from Martinsville High School in 1936.
Survivors include three daughters, Noreen Baird of Trafalgar and Suzanne Brooks and Lynne Allen, both of Morgantown; two sons, Mark Lory of Morgantown and Frank Lory of Cape Coral, Florida; two brothers, Gilbert Bray of Bloomington and James Bray of Owensburg; 16 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Two brothers, Franklyn Bray and Fredrick Bray, preceded her in death.
The Reverend Ben Swopes conducted a service Sunday afternoon, December 5, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in that community’s East Hill Cemetery.

Logan Maschino
Logan Elaine Maschino, the granddaughter of Nashville residents Mike and Carolyn Priest, was stillborn Sunday, November 28, 1999, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
She was born November 28, 1999, at Columbus to Lester Irvin and Lorie Elaine Snyder Maschino. Her parents survive in North Vernon.
Other survivors include a brother, Lake Maschino of North Vernon; other grandparents, LeRoy and Thelma Maschino of North Vernon and Larry Snyder and Tina Maus, both of Columbus; and great-grandparents, Earlen and Margaret Wilkerson of Columbus.
Joe Brown led a service Wednesday, December 1, at Pickett Funeral Home in North Vernon.
Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery at Hayden.

Alton B. Mood
Accountant and Nashville resident Alton Basil Mood died Thursday, December 2, 1999, at Meadowood Healthcare Pavilion in Bloomington. He was 59.
Mr. Mood was born July 30, 1940, in Bloomington to Evan B. and Mabel W. Johnson Mood.
A 1958 graduate of University High School in Bloomington, Mr. Mood earned a bachelor’s degree from Upper Iowa University in 1989.
He served with the United States Air Force Reserves from 1961 until 1967.
A Certicied Public Accountant and financial planner, Mr. Mood was active in the Indiana German Heritage Society and Bloomington Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants.
In addition, he was an avid home brewer of beer.
Survivors include two daughters, Dawn Bunton of Blanchester, Ohio and Angela Miller of Raleigh, North Carolina; a son, Rodney Mood of Cary, North Carolina; a sister, Willa Yeager of Indianapolis; two brothers, Dennis Mood of Bloomington and Darrell Mood of Yakota Air Base, Japan; and four grandchildren.
The Reverend David Owen led a service Monday morning, December 6, at Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington.

George A. Tracy
Brown County native George Allen Tracy died Sunday, November 7, 1999, at his home in Trumann, Arkansas. He was 76.
Mr. Tracy was born March 21, 1923, in Brown County to Walter Allen Tracy and India Higgins Tracy.
He was married to Melba Pick. She survives in Trumann, Arkansas.
Mr. Tracy was graduated from the old Nashville High School in 1941.
While a resident of the county, he had been active in the Nashville Christian Church, where he was onetime a deacon, board member and treasurer.
He had also been a deacon at First Christian Church in Trumann, Arkansas.
Mr. Tracy was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star.
Other survivors include a son, William Allen Tracy of San Mateo, California; three grandsons, Adam Nevins, Garth Nevins and Uriah Nevins; five great-grandchildren; four step-children, Matt Wells, Don Wells, Bill Wells and Sally Wells Tackett; eight step-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah Jane Tracy Nevins.
A service was conducted Friday, November 12, at First Christian Church in Trumann, Arkansas.
Burial was at Nettleton Cemetery near Jonesboro, Arkansas.
James White Jr.
James W. White Jr., the brother of Woodland Lake Road resident Donna VonSchriltz, died Thursday, November 25, 1999, at Columbus Regional Hospital after being rushed there after suffering a heart attack while hunting in northern Brown County. A resident of Speedway, he was 54.
Mr. White was born April 24, 1945, in Columbus to James W. White Sr. and Vicki Sipos White. His mother survives.
He was married to Elizabeth N. Falconbury. She survives in Marion County.
Mr. White had worked as a construction mechanic at Conveyance Incorporated in Indianapolis for four years. He had also worked at Loon Country Lures, a custom fishing tackle establishment, in Spencer.
He was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Mr. White was discharged from the military in 1968.
He had been a member of Abate of Indiana and the National Rifle Association.
Other survivors include two daughters, Kimberley White and Nancy Holland; two sons, William White and Jonathan White; another sister, Barbara Smith; a brother, Robert L. White; 11 grandchildren; two nephews, Jim Oliver of Mitchell, and Tim Oliver of Woodland Lake Road; and a niece, Debbie Taylor of Woodland Lake Road.
A service was conducted Monday morning, November 29, at Conkle Funeral Home’s Speedway Chapel in Indianapolis.
Kenneth Dwigans
Kenneth A. Dwigans, the brother of Brown County resident Laura Ann Oliver, died Monday, December 6, 1999, at his Indianapolis home. He was 48.
Mr. Dwigans was born May 13, 1951, in Indianapolis to Harry L. and Wilma Carlile Dwigans.
He had worked as a salesman at Greenwood South Trailer before retiring in 1996.
Mr. Dwigans was a United States Army veteran.
Other survivors include a son, Michael Joseph Dwigans of Indianapolis; two daughters, Dawn Michelle Jones of Pensacola, Florida and Amie Lynn Orr of Indianapolis; two brothers, Thomas J. Sullivan of Cincinnati, Ohio and Paul J. Dwigans of Indianapolis; and seven grandchildren.
A service was conducted Monday, December 13, at New Crown Cemetery in Marion County.

Charles Edwards
Part-time county resident Charles R. Edwards died Tuesday, December 7, 1999, at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville. A resident of Cicero, he was 82.
Mr. Edwards was born April 27, 1917, in Indianapolis to Charles and Clara Edwards.
He was married to Barbara Reinert. She survives.
Mr. Edwards was graduated from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science.
After completing mortuary school, he worked at Feeney-Kirby Mortuary, now Feeney-Hornak Mortuary, in Indianapolis.
After that he worked as executive housekeeper at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis for 18 years before retiring.
He was a United States Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Mr. Edwards was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Cicero American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Other survivors include a son, Andrew Edwards of Indianapolis; two daughters, Karen Mann of Tennessee and Jackie Knapp of Marietta, Georgia; a sister, Madelyn Edwards; 10 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
His parents and two sons, Michael Edwards and Joseph V. Edwards, preceded him in death.
A service was conducted Friday morning, December 10, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Indianapolis.
Burial was in that city's Calvary Cemetery.

Dal L. Grimes Sr.
Brown County native Dal L. Grimes Sr. died Wednesday evening, December 8, 1999, at his grandson's home in Columbus. A resident of that city, he was 78.
Mr. Grimes was born June 30, 1921, in Brown County to Henry F. and Zoie M. Coy Grimes.
He and Gladys E. Purdue were married in 1952. She died in 1995.
Mr. Grimes had worked at Carrico Furniture in Columbus for 42 years.
He was a member of World of Pentecost in Columbus.
Survivors include two sons, James D. Grimes and Dal L. Grimes Jr., both of Columbus; four daughters, Debbie Olmsted, Sandra Corona Burton and Joyce Vera, all of Columbus and Tammy Shepherd of Brown County; two brothers, Harold G. Grimes of Whiteland and James H. Grimes of Columbus; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Grimes was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Torres; five brothers; and three sisters.
Bud Combs led a service Saturday morning, December 11, at Barkes, Inlow and Weaver Funeral Home in Columbus.
Burial was in Bartholomew County's Mineral Springs Cemetery.

Lena Hoffman
Helmsburg Road resident Lena L. Hoffman died Wednesday afternoon, December 8, 1999, at the Brown County Community Care Center in Salt Creek Park. She was 98.
Mrs. Hoffman was born October 20, 1901, in Marion County to Alonzo Hoffman and Maggie Zeisler.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a sister, Susie Rost of Nashville; a great-nephew, David Rost of Nashville; and a niece, Carol Wilson of Ohio.
Mrs. Hoffman was preceded in death by three sisters, Ethel Gilbert, Carrie Poland and Edith Long.
There was no service.
Burial was at Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis.
