Joanne Beeson
Joanne Penry Beeson, the sister of former Brown County resident Earline Penry Walker, died Sunday, December 26, 1999, at her home in Greenfield. She was 56.
Mrs. Beeson was born February 13, 1943, in Indianapolis to Earl and Iva Mae Cornthwaite Penry.
She was married to Max Beeson. He died in December 1993.
Mrs. Beeson was graduated from Greenfield High School and had attended Indiana Business College.
Since 1973, she had worked as a production control manager at Aluminum Finishing Corporation of Indianapolis.
Mrs. Beeson was an avid bowler and a member of Greensburg’s Tree City Squares.
Other survivors include two step-sons; a step-daughter; a brother, George Penry of Forrest; and several step-grandchildren.
Larry Skinner and Larry Chesterfield led a service Thursday morning, December 30, at Pasco Memorial Mortuary in Greenfield.
Burial was in Shelby County’s Van Pelt Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Iva P. Brown
County native Iva P. Brown died Saturday, January 1, 2000, at her home in Bloomington. She was 94.
Mrs. Brown was born August 15, 1905, in Brown County to Riley and Margaret Wilkerson Fleetwood.
She first married Clyde Miller. After his death she married James H. Brown. He also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Brown had owned the old Miller’s Grocery in Arlington for several years.
She was a member of the Pentecostal Faith Assembly. Mrs. Brown had taught Sunday school.
Mrs. Brown was also a member of Ellettsville’s Reeves Club.
Survivors include four daughters, Frances Osmon, Marcene Byers and Sally Wilbur, all of Bloomington and Georgia Devrieze of Paoli, Kansas; two sons, Jack Brown of Leeton, Missouri and Jerry Brown of Plainfield; a sister, Ica Casey of Franklin; two brothers, Woodrow Curry and Belva Curry, both of Columbus; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Maxine Miller Horton; two sisters, Hulda McCammon and Dica Crouch; and five brothers, Otis Fleetwood, Sandford Fleetwood, Riley Fleetwood, Celus Fleetwood and Luther Fleetwood.
The Reverend Michael Douglas and Reverend Dwight Hardin conducted a service Tuesday afternoon, January 4, at Pentecostal Faith Assembly.
Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Pentecostal Faith Assembly, or to Hospice of Bloomington.

Anna Campbell
Anna M. Campbell, the mother of former Brown County resident Nancy Szakaly, died Saturday, January 1, 2000, at Beverly Health Care Center in Bloomington. A resident of that city, she was 80.
Mrs. Campbell was born March 13, 1919, in Jonesboro to Elen and Nina McCreary Ferguson.
She was married to G. Herman Campbell. He died in 1982.
Mrs. Campbell had worked as an accountant for the Marion School System Employees Federal Credit Union for many years.
She had been a member of the Methodist Church in Marion.
Among her hobbies was playing bridge and bird watching. She delivered food to the elderly for Meals on Wheels.
Mrs. Campbell was also a member of the National Audubon Society and YMCA in Marion.
Other survivors include a sister, Alma Edgington of Marion; and two grandchildren, Amy Szakaly of San Francisco, California and Aaron Szakaly of Bloomington.
She was preceded in death by a son, Gary Allen Campbell in 1961.
Pastor Matt Atha will conduct a service Thursday, January 6, at 11 a.m. in Marion’s Grant Memorial Park.
Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington was in charge of arrangements.
The family asks that audiobooks be donated to local libraries in memory of Mrs. Campbell.

Whitney L. Freshour
Brown County High School senior Whitney Leigh Freshour died Wednesday morning, December 29, 1999, from injuries she received in an automobile accident on Four Mile Ridge Road. She was 17.
Whitney was born June 23, 1982, in Bloomington to David and Sandy Miller Freshour. They survive.
An honors student at the high school, she was recently accepted to attend DePauw University in Greencastle. She had hoped to become an elementary school teacher like her mother.
A member of New Life Community Church, Whitney had been a member of Brown County’s varsity cheerleading squad and was a gymnast.
Other survivors include a sister, Mara Freshour at home; two brothers, Graham Freshour and Tanner Freshour at home; grandparents, Mike and Syd Nickels and Kathryn Brown, all of Nashville, Eugene and Beverly Freshour of South Bend and John and Marilyn Miller of North Carolina; and great-grandparents, Marion Mara of Nashville and Maurice V. "Pods" and Marianne Miller of Nashville.
Private family services were conducted.
Burial was in Nashville’s Greenlawn Cemetery.
The Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North was in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family asked that memorial contributions be sent to the Whitney Freshour Scholarship Fund, Post Office Box 428, Nashville, Indiana 47448.

Mamie M. Hardin
Long-time Brown County resident Mamie Marie Hardin died Tuesday, December 28, 1999, at Bloomington Hospital. She was 87.
Mrs. Hardin was born July 25, 1912, in Greene County to Elijah and Ollie Burch Hamlin.
She was married to the Reverend Clarence Hardin. He died September 18, 1991.
The couple ran the county poor farm (now the school administration building) in the 1950s. She also helped her husband during his 43 years in the ministry.
A homemaker, she had been a member of the Green Valley Apostolic Church on State Road 46 West.
Survivors include three sons, Merle Hardin and the Reverend Paul D. Hardin, both of Nashville and Dwight Hardin of Bloomington; two daughters, Joan Phyllis Hudson of Bruceville and Susie Lucas of Nashville; a brother, George Hamlin of Bloomfield; 21 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hardin was preceded in death by two sisters, Nellie Andrews and Daisy Heaton; two brothers, Chester Hamlin and Shelton Hamlin; a son, James Franklin Hardin; two daughters, Wilma Louise Beavers and Alma Lois Hardin; and a grandchild.
Brother Robert Hackler and the Reverend Felix Crowder led a service Friday morning, December 31, at Day Mortuary in Bloomington.
Burial was in Greene County’s Bingham Cemetery.

William J. Hesselgrave
Nineveh resident William J. "Bill" Hesselgrave died Saturday, January 2, 2000, at his residence.
He was 66.
He was born October 14, 1933 in Indianapolis to William E. and Helen Oltean Hesselgrave.
A retired teacher, Mr. Hesselgrave was graduated from Marian College.
Most recently, he taught at ITT Technical Institute in Indianapolis. In 1984 he retired from FAA as an administrator and instructor.
He also taught at Valparaiso and Ivy Tech in Indianapolis.
He was a member of American Legion Post 500 and had served with the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include a sister, Barbara Dugan; two brothers, Mike Hesselgrave and Phillip Hesselgrave; and several nieces and nephews.
A service will be held at 10 a.m. this morning, Wednesday, January 5, at Conkle Funeral Home’s Speedway Chapel.
Burial will follow at Floral Park Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.

Joseph Mattingly
Joseph W. Mattingly, the step-father of Nineveh area resident Charles Caplinger, died Saturday, December 25, 1999, at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis. A resident of Greenwood, he was 85.
Mr. Mattingly was born May 14, 1914, in Maceo, Kentucky to Joseph B. and Maranea L. Cooney Mattingly.
He and Edna L. Reynolds were married September 21, 1968, in Greenwood. She survives.
Mr. Mattingly had worked as a packer at Link Belt in Indianapolis for 18 years, retiring in 1974.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Greenwood.
Other survivors include two step-daughters, Jackie Mears of Brownsburg and Bonnie Dale of Indianapolis; a brother, Robert Mattingly of Owensboro, Kentucky; a sister, Marion Estes of Owensboro, Kentucky; 10 step-grandchildren; a several step-great-grandchildren.
A service was conducted Wednesday afternoon, December 29, at G.H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home.
Burial was at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Glenn’s Valley.

Robert Stickford
Robert Harold Stickford died Thursday morning, December 30, 1999, at his home in West Newton. He was 73.
Mr. Stickford left survivors in Brown County.
He was born February 10, 1926, in Shelby County to George Julius and Fannie Frances Chappelow Stickford.
He had worked as a machinist for Mercer Machine in Indianapolis for 12 years, retiring in 1991. Before that, Mr. Stickford was a machinist for Arvin Industries in Franklin for almost 27 years.
Mr. Stickford had been a member of the Speedway Moose Lodge and the Legionnaire Lodge.
Survivors include three sons, Leslie E. Stickford of Nineveh, Kenneth R. Stickford of Morgantown and Roger Clay Stickford of Bean Blossom; a daughter, Barbara Ann Wooten of New Whiteland; a step-daughter, Sharon K. Chastain of Paragon; three sisters, Frances L. Klotzsche of Morgantown, Rose Ellen Wilson of St. Paul, and Mary Catherine Poole-Taggart of Waldron; and several grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his companion, Margaret McKinley.
The Reverend Steve Agal conducted a service Saturday morning, January 1, at West Newton Cemetery in Marion County.
Carlisle and Son Funeral Chapel in Mooresville was in charge of arrangements.

Marvin Thomas
Nashville resident Marvin K. Thomas died Sunday, January 2, 2000, at his home. He was 49.
Mr. Thomas was born June 4, 1950, in Monroe County to Homer L. Thomas Sr. and Nellie J. Lake Thomas. His mother survives in Bloomington.
He was married to Linda Allgood. She survives in Brown County.
Mr. Thomas had worked for Monroe County schools for 10 years.
He was a United States Navy veteran.
Other survivors include a on, Marty W. Thomas of Nashville; a daughter, Marlena M. Porter of Nashville; three brothers, Homer L. Thomas Jr. and James E. Thomas, both of Bloomington and Mark A. Thomas of Morgantown; a sister, Sylvia J. Rains of Bloomington; a grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his father.
The Reverend Bruce Kelly will lead a service today, January 5, at 1 p.m. in Chandler Funeral Home at Ellettsville.
Burial will be in Monroe County’s Bethel Cemetery.

Curtis Whitaker
Former Morgantown resident Curtis Whitaker died Tuesday, December 21, 1999, in Phoenix, Arizona. A resident of that city since 1933, he was 92.
Mr. Whitaker was born December 6, 1907, in Morgantown to Ira and Edith Shank Whitaker.
He was married to Catherine Breyer. She preceded him in death.
Mr. Whitaker had managed a Union Oil 76 Station in Williams, Arizona from 1940 until 1957. From 1957 until retiring in 1971, he had owned a photography shop there.
For 22 years, Mr. Whitaker was a member of Camp Verde Christian Church in Camp Verde, Arizona.
He had played semi-professional basketball in the Morgan County area during the late 1920s.
Mr. Whitaker was graduated from the old Morgantown High School. He attended Indianapolis Business College.
Survivors include two sons, William E. Whitaker of O’Fallon, Missouri and James C. Whitaker of Phoenix, Arizona; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Locally, Mr. Whitaker is survived by a niece, Mary Jane Woods; and a nephew, Rollins Whitaker, both of Morgantown.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Elkins; and two brothers, Irvin Whitaker and Alvin Whitaker.
A memorial service will be conducted at Glendale Christian Church in Glendale, Arizona Thursday, January 6, at 10 a.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Glendale Christian Church.

Clay Williams
Clay Junior Williams died Monday afternoon, December 27, 1999, at his home in Mt. Auburn. He was 67.
Mr. Williams was born October 5, 1932, in Bartholomew County to Clay White Williams and Pearl Cox Williams.
He and LaVerne Michaels were married September 11, 1950. She survives.
Mr. Williams had worked as a diesel mechanic for Courier-Newsom in Columbus for 31 years. He retired from Hurt Express in Hope in 1994.
He had also worked for T and T Fleet Service in Columbus.
Mr. Williams had been a member of Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ in Columbus.
Other survivors include a son, David A. Williams of Mt. Auburn; two daughters, Linda K. Estes of Scipio and Pat Wesley Lanham of Edinburgh; three brothers, Robert Williams of Alice, Texas, Delvin Williams of Amity and Francis Williams of Greensburg; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. Williams was preceded in death by a son, Larry Dean Williams; a brother, Harlan Baker Williams; and a sister, Viola Fletcher.
The Reverend Timothy Streeval conducted a service Thursday morning, December 30, at Eskew-Eaton Funeral Home in Edinburgh.
Burial was in Johnson County’s Nineveh Cemetery.

Helen M. Bailey
Helen M. Burge Bailey, the mother of Brown County resident Robert E. Robinson, died Friday, January 7, 2000, at her home in Indianapolis. She was 82.
Mrs. Bailey was born March 23, 1917, in Greenwood to Harry and Martha Ann Ship Burge.
She and Howard K. Bailey were married September 25, 1954. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Bailey had worked at Arvins for 10 years. She had also worked in the cafeteria of Perry Township schools for four years.

Velma F. Brown
Velma F. Brown, the sister of Nashville resident Lewis Bishop, died Monday evening, January 3, 2000, at Columbus Regional Hospital. A resident of that city, she was 79.
Mrs. Brown was born January 26, 1920, in Columbus to George and Ida Thompson Bishop.
She and Thomas Joe Brown were married November 14, 1936. He survives.
Mrs. Brown was a homemaker. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Bartholomew County.

Eleanor Campbell
Eleanor Cambpell, the mother of Brown County resident Sharon Alcock, died Wednesday, January 5, 2000, in Nashville. A resident of Speedway, she was 85.
Mrs. Campbell was born August 24, 1914, in Hutchison, Kansas.
She was married to Harold Campbell. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Campbell had been a member of Speedway Christian Church and Tri Kappa sorority.
She volunteered her time at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for 23 years.
