Lettie Martin
Brown County native Lettie Mae Martin died Wednesday, November 7, 2001, at her Martinsville residence. She was 61.
Born April 19, 1940, she was the daughter of Henry and Opal (McPhearson) Leeman, and the stepdaughter of Ocle Jacobs Leeman, all deceased.
She and Gary E. Martin were married October 23, 1965, in Martinsville. He survives.
A 1958 graduate of Noblesville High School, Mrs. Martin was a member of the General Assembly and Church of the First Born.

Esther Patton
Esther M. Elkin Rumley Patton died Wednesday, November 14, 2001, at Brown County Health and Living Center. She was 84.
Born June 2, 1917, in Hendricks County, she was the daughter of Solomon C. and Alice Lilly Elkin.
She and William H. Patton were married March 21, 1957, in Hancock County. He died February 27, 1993.
An employee at Western Electric in Indianapolis for 25 years, she retired in 1973.
Her hobbies were antique collecting and crocheting.

Bonnie Springmeyer
Bonnie (Collins) Springmeyer died Monday, November 12, 2001, leaving family in the Brown County area. She was 63.
Born February 28, 1938, in Greensburg, she was the daughter of Merlin H. Collins and Louise Ruth (Davis) Collins Goldschmidt Mouton.
She was graduated from Greensburg High School in 1956.
She married Vincent J. Springmeyer, and he survives.

Dorothy Underwood
Artist Dorothy L. Underwood died Tuesday, November 13, 2001, in Indianapolis. A resident of Greenwood, she was 93.
She married Edward J. Underwood, who preceded her in death.
She was a member of St. Barnabas Catholic Church.
An award winning artist, she was a member of Indiana Artist Club, Brown County Art Gallery, Brown County Artists Guild and the South Side Art League.

Ronald Wikle
Ronald Leon Wikle, the brother-in-law of Story residents Avis and Maury Zody, died Sunday, November 11, 2001, at Bloomington Hospital. A resident of that city, he was 66.
Born February 26, 1935, in Elnora, he was the son of Leon T. and Regina McDermott Wikle. His mother survives in Elnora.
He was graduated from Elnora High School in 1953, where he served as class president and was a stand-out member of the varsity basketball team.

Beverly Williamson
Beverly J. Williamson died Sunday, November 4, 2001, in Blue Springs, Missouri, leaving friends in the area. A resident of Blue Springs, she was 44.
Born in November 29, 1956, She was the daughter of Gordon and Elva Hall. She married Kevin Williamson, who survives.
Mrs. Williamson was graduated in 1974 from Fort Hill High School in Cumberland, Maryland. She graduated from Mount Vernon Nazarene College in 1978, where she was the co-valedictorian and earned the "Service Above Self" award.
Most recently she was the office manager of the Blue Springs Church of the Nazarene.

Thomas Hubbard, son of Abe Martin creator, dies
Thomas E. Hubbard, the son of Abe Martin creator Frank McKinney "Kin" Hubbard, died Saturday, December 1, 2001, at Mary Rutan Hospital, where he had been a patient for a week.
Owner and publisher of the Bellefontaine Examiner, he was 94 and had been a lifelong friend of Brown County.
Mr. Hubbard was born on May 29, 1907, in Indianapolis, the son of Frank McKinney "Kin" and Josephine Hubbard.
A 1926 graduate of Culver Military Academy, he studied journalism at Indiana University and Butler University.
He served as a gunnery fire controlman aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Core, with the United States Navy during World War II.
Mr. Hubbard began with the newspaper in 1930, after moving to Ohio from Indianapolis, where his father had worked as the country’s first syndicated humorist, with his Abe Martin character.
He came from a line of individuals who made their livings in the newspaper industry and joined the others in never retiring from the profession.
The Examiner has been owned by the Hubbard family since 1871, and has been published daily since 1891.

Lark Bailey
Lark Bailey died Saturday, November 17, 2001, in the home of friends at Lake Lemon. She was 51.
Born November 23, 1949, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Jean Allo Bailey and the late Roy D. Sprawl.
She received a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, where she met her first husband, John Carlton Burr. He preceded her in death.
Following his death, Ms. Bailey became an accomplished hairdresser in Bloomington.
Her second marriage to William Terman ended in divorce.

Robert Balser
Former Brown County road commissioner Robert L. Balser died Saturday morning, December 1, 2001, at the Brown County Health and Living Center in Salt Creek Park. He was 88.
Mr. Balser had lived on State Road 46 West.
He was born December 21, 1912, in Elwood to Leora "Dick" and Grace M. (McCreary) Balser.
He married Grace Lucille Crane, in July 1936. She died September 1, 1996.
A long-time businessman, Mr. Balser had operated the Belmont Grocery from 1939 until 1955. In 1955, he purchased the Hickory Shades Motel in Belmont. Mr. Balser operated the motel until 1974.

Charles Bruce
Charles F. "Tod" Bruce, the father of Nashville resident Michael Todd Bruce, died Friday, November 30, 2001, at Bloomington Hospital. A resident of Bloomington, he was 77.
Born March 1, 1924, in Bloomington, he was the son of Benjamin F. and Arie (Nilson) Bruce.
He married Anna L. "Ann" Taylor, and she survives.
An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Bruce served in the Rhineland and central Europe.
Mr. Bruce managed University Sporting Goods in Bloomington for 27 years, retiring in 1986.

Rosemary Marshall
Rosemary G. Marshall died Monday, November 26, 2001, at Brown County Health and Living Center. A resident of Morgantown, she was 86.
Born April 8, 1915, in Ind-ianapolis, she was the dau-ghter of Vernon B. Gregg Sr. and Floy M. McCarty Gregg.
She was graduated from Morgantown High School in 1933.
She and Harold A. Marshall were married December 24, 1950, in Morgan-town. He died December 26, 1995.
Mrs. Marshall had worked at Camp Atterbury during World War II, and had been a nurse’s aid in the maternity ward at Johnson County Memorial Hospital for several years during the 1950s.

Virgil Noonan
Former Brown county resident and business owner Virgil F. Noonan died Saturday, November 24, 2001, at his residence in Seymour. He was 76.
Born December 14, 1924, in Westminster, California, he was the son of William and Georgia (Loveland) Noonan.
He and Patricia Ermand Kaufman were married December 13, 1947, in Franklin. She died May 25, 1992.
Mr. Noonan served with the U.S. Army from 1945 until 1947.

Norma J. Petro
Valley Branch Road resident Norma J. Petro died Sunday, December 2, 2001, at Brown County Health and Living Center. She was 65.
Mrs. Petro was born June 27, 1936, in Brown County, the daughter of James Marion Lucas and Dora Mathis. Her mother, Dora Bingham, survives.
Mrs. Petro married Floyd R. Petro, who also survives.
A housewife, she was a member of Green Valley church.

Agnes Pryor
Agnes F. Pryor died Thursday, December 6, 2001 at Franklin Meadows after an extended illness. A resident of that city, she was 75.
Mrs. Pryor was born March 17, 1926 in Greenville, Ohio to Paul C. Baker and Glendie Mae Paul.
She married Richard R. Pryor August 20, 1947 in Franklin. He survives.
Mrs. Pryor was graduated from Franklin High School in 1944 and attended Frank-lin College.
She worked in the clerk and treasurer’s office in the Johnson County Courthouse in the 1960’s.

Curtis Trainer
Dr. Curtis Lemuel Trainer, father of Helmsburg resident Sharon Rivenbark, died Thursday, December 6, 2001, at Bloomington Hospital. A resident of Unionville, he was 94.
Mr. Trainer was born May 2, 1907 in Illinois to George S. and Mina (Hawkins) Trainer.
He married Annie Myers, and she survives in Unionville.
He received his undergraduate degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, a Masters from the University of Illinois, and Doctorate from Washington University.
He began teaching at age 17 in a one-room school house where he also was the principal.

Carl Wise
Former Morgantown resident Carl R. "Dick" Wise died Monday, December 3, 2001, at Heartland Care Center in Marysville, Ohio. He was 78.
Born October 21, 1923, in Morgantown, he was the son of Walter and Katherine (Godman) Wise.
He was graduated from Morgantown High School in 1941.
A veteran of the US Army, Mr. Wise served as a motorcycle courier between the front lines and allied military governments in Africa, Italy and Europe during World War II.

Doris Wood
Doris M. Wood, the mother of Sweetwater Lake resident Judith Kay Wood Bruning, died Thursday, November 29, 2001, at Home Hospital in Lafayette. She was 89.
A lifelong resident of that city, she spent winters in Marco Island, Florida..
She was graduated from Jefferson High School in 1931, and St. Francis Academy of Music in 1933.
Mrs. Wood also attended Purdue University School of Nursing.
Born October 17, 1912, she married Ray George Wood on June 9, 1934, in Crown Point.

Carl J. Biltz
Salt Creek Road resident Carl J. Biltz died Tuesday afternoon, December 18, 2001, at the Brown County Health and Living Center in Nashville. He was 78.
Mr. Biltz was born April 7, 1923, in Roostown, Ohio to Carl and Grace Loomis Biltz.
He and Dorothy Twohig were married August 4, 1945. She survives.
Mr. Biltz had worked as a carpenter, retiring in 1980.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Biltz fought in the last decisive battle in the war - the Battle of the Bulge. He earned a European African Middle Eastern Theater ribbon, two battle stars for action in the Ardennes Campaign in December 1944 and the French Campaign in July 1944.

Jula Frazier
Jula M. Frazier, the mother of Brown county resident Dr. Robert L. Frazier, died Saturday, December 15, 2001, in Franklin. A longtime Franklin resident, and former resident of Hancock County, she was 86.
Born October 15, 1915, in Hancock County, she was the daughter of Pearl and Etta May (Hawkins) Bell.
She attended schools in Hancock County.
She and Bob Frazier were married August 13, 1931, in Indianapolis. He preceded her in death November 8, 1982.
An Army housewife and beautician, Mrs. Frazier owned and operated the Bell Beauty Salon in Franklin during the 1970s.
She was associated with New Whiteland Christian Church.
