Howard M. Thomas Sr.
BLOOMINGTON -- Howard M. Thomas Sr., 72, of Bedford died at 2:45 p.m. Thursday at Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington. He retired from Kroger's in 1984, following 30 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during the Korean Conflict. Survivors include his wife, Janice Thomas of Bedford; one daughter, Glendine Allen of Powhatan, Va.; one son, Howard M. Thomas Jr. of Indianapolis; one brother, Galen G. Thomas of Advance; two sisters, Marjorie Wyatt of Indianapolis and Judith McClure of Metropolis, Ill.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Stevens Mortuary, located at 5520 W. 10th Street, Indianapolis. There will be no calling hours prior to the service.

Charles Turner Sr.
Sept. 21, 1940 -- June 1, 2001
Charles Turner Sr., 60, of Lakeside Estates in Mitchell passed away at 4 a.m. today at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford. Born in Lawrence County, he was the son of Dewey and Ollie (Jeffries) Turner. He married Karen Tuddy in 1958, and she survives. He was a semi truck driver for Moon Freight Lines, retiring in 1985 after 26 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, riding around, spotting deer and playing cards. He was a racing fan of the late Dale Earnhardt. He was a member of the Gospel Lighthouse Assembly of Bedford. He was a caring and supportive man and a good provider for his family. Surviving with his wife, Karen Turner of Mitchell, are four children, Charles Turner Jr. of Mitchell, Carolyn Robinson of Bedford, Michael Turner and Lisa Turner, both of Mitchell; three brothers, Ralph Turner, Sam Turner and Frank Turner, all of Mitchell; one sister, Marie Tillette, also of Mitchell; nine grandchildren: Dorothy Warren of Oneida, Ky., Shirley Turner and Charlene Dezarn, both of Manchester, Ky., Ashly Turner of Jackson, Ala., Cindy Terry and Sammy Terry, Michael Turner, Joshua Turner and Jeremiah Turner, all of Mitchell; seven great-grandchildren: Jesse Saylor of Oneida, Ky., Joshua Henson, Devon Henson and Antion Walker, all of Manchester, Ky., Megan Terry and Briana Carver, both of Mitchell, and Danica Tillette of Orleans; several nieces and nephews, family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Ollie Turner; two brothers, Kenny Turner and James Turner; and one granddaughter, Karen M. (Turner) Henson. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Haverly Mortuary in Mitchell, with Brother Don Terry officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery. Henderson 'Red' Hammond
April 16, 1929 -- May 31, 2001
Henderson "Red" Hammond, 72, of Bedford died on Thursday at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford. Born in Cedar Hill, Ky., he was the son of Denny and Vircie (Dalton) Hammond. He married Rosalie Cheek on May 21, 1948, and she survives. He owned and operated "Red's Auto Service and Grocery" for 30 years, retiring in 1989. Surviving in addition to his wife, Rosalie of Bedford, are two daughters, Connie Lee (Hammond) Kirkman and her husband, Larry, of Bedford, Shelia Rose (Hammond) Bell and her husband, Arnold, of Mitchell; one son, Lonnie G. Hammond of Springville; six brothers, Robert Hammond of Springville, Delno Hammond of Belview, Ohio, Don Hammond of Round Lake, Ill., Clifford Hammond, Mark Hammond and Ronald Hammond, all of Columbus, Ohio; six sisters, Nellie New and Betty Jo Powels, both of Monticello, Ky., Lynna Turpin of Somerset, Ky., Iva Lee Bianchi of Bedford, Raylah Hammond of Winnetka, Calif., and Wanda Fese of Northridge, Calif.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Cresthaven Funeral Home with interment at Cresthaven Memory Gardens, Bedford. MARENGO -- Carl Lee Onstott Jr., 27, of Marengo died on Thursday at Marengo. He was a mechanic for BGM Equipment in Jasper. Survivors include his wife, Marcie Onstott of Taswell; two sons, Austin Levi Onstott of Milltown and Tristin Carl Onstott, at home; one daughter, Ayla Darielle Onstott, at home; his parents, Carl and Gloria Onstott of Marengo; four sisters, Carla D. Englert of New Albany, Rachel J. Onstott of Louisville, Ky., Lea Onstott of Jeffersontown, Ky., and Betty Onstott of Marengo; paternal grandparents, Herbert and Rachel Onstott of New Albany, and maternal grandmother, Josephine Bergquist of Jeffersonville. CAMPBELLSBURG -- Benjamin "Ben" E. Bilyeu, 86, of Campbellsburg died at 2:30 a.m. Thursday at his residence. He was a retired grocer, owner of the old Bilyeu Grocery in Campbellsburg. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, having served during World War II. Survivors include five sons, James F. Bilyeu of Phoenix, Robert L. Bilyeu and M. Thomas Bilyeu, both of Campbellsburg, John E. Bilyeu of Jacksonville, Fla., and William D. Bilyeu of Salem; one daughter, Brenda K. Watterson of Mitchell; three sisters, Mahala Perdiew of Muncie, Mary Alice McPike and Elizabeth Bachman, both of Campbellsburg; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church in Campbellsburg. Burial will be in Claysville Cemetery, with full military honors at the graveside. PAOLI -- Elsie (Grimes) Holaday, 93, of Paoli died at 5 a.m. Thursday at her residence. She was a retired co-manager of Paoli Jay C Store. Survivors include one son, George William Holaday of Paoli; one daughter, Kathryn Springer of Paoli; four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. INDIANAPOLIS -- Sue (Turner) Cobb, 68, of Indianapolis, formerly of Bedford, died Wednesday at Indianapolis. Born in Monroe County, she was the daughter of Oscar W. and Lola (Hyslop) Turner. She married Dale D. Cobb and he survives. She was a homemaker and a graduate of Bedford High School. Survivors in addition to her husband, Dale D. Cobb of Indianapolis, are one son, James Cobb; two daughters, Ann and Mary Cobb; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Shirley Brothers Mortuary, Irving Hill Chapel in Indianapolis. Burial will be in Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis. CARROLLTON, Ga. -- John Albert McCleary, 84, of Carrollton, Ga., formerly of Warsaw and Anderson, died on July 14 at Carrollton, Ga. Survivors include two daughters, Ann Elizabeth McCleary of Carrollton, Ga., and Nancy Jane Lee of Simi, Calif.; and six grandchildren. Mike Ragsdale
Oct. 13, 1946 -- Aug. 2, 2001
INDIANAPOLIS -- Mike Ragsdale, 54, of Bedford died on Thursday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis following a three-week illness. He was an estimator for Bedford Body & Paint in Bedford. He retired from the Bedford City Police Dept. in 1995, and he owned Mike's Appraisal Service in Bedford. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn (Jean) Ragsdale of Bedford; his father, Charles G. Ragsdale of Bedford; two sons, Jim Ragsdale of Oolitic and Charles Robert Ragsdale of Chicago; two step-sisters, Susan Dowling of Bedford and Lori Ellett of Ellettsville; two step-brothers, Harry Scott Duncan of Bedford and Steve Duncan of Bloomington; his step-mother, Anne Duncan Ragsdale of Bedford; and one grandson. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the First Church of God in Mitchell. Burial wil be in Clover Hill Cemetery. George W. McCammon
MITCHELL -- George W. McCammon, 83, of Mitchell passed away at 1 a.m. Thursday at his residence. Born March 10, 1918, in Paxton, he was the son of John Thomas and Ethel Jane (McCammon) McCammon. He married Ethel E. "Betty" Shaw Oct. 17, 1939, and she survives. He graduated from Carlisle High School in 1936 and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. Two years later he became a clerk-typist at the U.S. Forestry Service office in Bedford and in 1945 went to work at Ellison Abstract in Bedford. His banking career began in 1949 at First National Bank in Mitchell. In 1969 he joined the Bank of Mitchell and was instrumental in helping organize First National Bank in Paoli and Wabash Valley Bank in Vincennes. For more than 20 years, he was a land title specialist for Coates Field Services in Oklahoma City, where he was a senior title agent. He was a volunteer and member of the Lawrence County Historical and Genealogical Society, and in 1992 published his own family history, "Descendants of Matthew McCammon," a 45-year endeavor. He served 16 years as manager of the Mitchell Cemetery Board of Regents, was co-chairman and finance chairman of the Persimmon Festival and director of the Mitchell Chamber of Commerce. He was one of the original incorporators of Spring Mill Bible Camp and for many years served as treasurer of the South Lawrence Heart Association. He was a member of the Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228, F & AM, and the Hadi Shrine Club in Evansville. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and attended Central Church of Christ in Bedford. Survivors include his wife, Betty McCammon of Mitchell; four children, Phoebe Jane Simmons of Clermont, Fla., Stephen George McCammon of Laketon, Mark Shaw McCammon of Mitchell and Elizabeth Ann Greenwell of Bedford; one brother, Thomas Peyton McCammon of Linton; 10 grandchildren, Lisa Jane Harnishfeger, Jackie D. Simmons II, William Scott Simmons, Amy Elizabeth Simmons, Shawn Patrick McCammon, Stephanie Colleen Owens, Stacie Lynne McCammon, Michelle Elizabeth Duncan, Lori Ann Hess and Travis Michael Greenwell; and 12 great-grandchildren, Christopher Harnishfeger, William Scott Simmons II, Jazmyn Brae McCammon, Carrie Nicole Owens, Tiffany Dawn Owens, Joel Bradley Heseman, Jessica Lynn Heseman, Ashton Shaw Melvin, Alyssa Jade Duncan, Ashley Marie Duncan, Holly Marie Hess, and Hannah Elisabeth Greenwell He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Loren McCammon; and two sisters, Frances Crew and Martha Jane Arnold. Memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home in Mitchell with Brother Darrell Simon officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery. INDIANAPOLIS -- Nellie C. (Gilliland) Craig, 84, of Bedford died Wednesday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born July 14, 1917, in Perry County, she was the daughter of William and Mary (Blake) Gilliland. She was married in 1946 to Cleophus Craig, who preceded her in death in 1999. A homemaker and mother of four, she raised her family while residing in Bedford. She was a member of the First Church of God and attended Donica Memorial Church of God. She was a Pink Lady volunteer at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford. Survivors include two sons, Joe McCluskey and James Craig, both of Bedford; two daughters, Nancy Terry and Wilma Donoghue, both of Bedford; two sisters, Anna Feeley of Mattoon, Ill., and Dorothy Siegmund of Tolona, Ill.; one brother, Jesse Gilliland of Bedford; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; six brothers, Raymond Gilliland, Laverne Gilliland, Harold Gilliland, Billy Gilliland, Eugene Gilliland and Davis Gilliland; six sisters, Mildred Campbell, Ethel Gilliland, Emogene Miller, Ruby Hicks, Ivy Carter and Merle Hicks; and one grandson, Billy James McCluskey. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Day & Carter Mortuary of Bedford with the Rev. Alan Reed and the Rev. Kendall Hendrickson officiating. Larry Johnson

BLOOMINGTON -- Larry Johnson, 63, of Bloomington died Tuesday at his residence. Survivors include three sons, Richard Johnson, Randall Johnson and Robert Johnson, all of Williams; and one daughter, Teresa Johnson of Bedford. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date at Jones Funeral Home in Heltonville. The body will be cremated and there will be no calling hours.

George William Webb
Nov. 18, 1919 -- Nov. 2, 2001
BLOOMINGTON -- George William Webb, 81, of Oolitic died at 3:30 a.m. today at Fontainbleu Nursing and Rehab Center in Bloomington. Born Nov. 18, 1919, in Martin County, he was the son of Stanley and Frances (Parker) Webb. He married Wilma King on July 20, 1940 and she survives. He worked in CCC Camps in Nevada prior to World War II and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy of that war. He was a 32nd degree Mason; a member of Redman's Lodge; Oolitic Baptist Church; and was a special deputy sheriff for 21 years. He delighted in restoring antique cars. He was dearly loved by his family and his many friends. Always a moral man, he had no reason to have to make peace with his Lord at the end of his life. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Wilma (King) Webb of Oolitic; his daughter, Sharon Brennan and her husband, Matt of Bloomington; two grandchildren, Michael Dalton and Dr. Lori Campbell and her husband, Dr. Bill Campbell, all of Bloomington; two great-grandchildren, Rachael and Will Campbell; two sisters, Edith Hackney and Violet Coyle, of Lawrence County; two brothers, Carl and Leland Webb, both of Lawrence County; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, Earl, Everett, Cecil and Opal Webb. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Day & Carter Mortuary in Bedford.
