Paul M. Allen
WEST BADEN SPRINGS - Paul Martin Allen died Tuesday, February 5th. He was a great man, not as a world leader or a famous person. You might say he was never interested in getting credit or receiving honors.
He did corny things like pay his bills on time, go to church on Sunday. He died with fulfillment in his heart. He knew that he was a great success as a husband and a father, a grandfather, a great-grandfather, a brother, a son and a friend.
He died at the age of 93 years and 2 months. He was born in Northwest Township in Orange County to Frank and Alice (Blankenship) Allen. He was the youngest of eight children, having six sisters and one brother. He spent his entire life on Pan Handle Road, Sam's Creek and Roland (known as Cobb's Town when he was a boy) all within three miles of where he was born.
He married Selma Catt on May 21, 1932, and they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary in May of 1995 before Selma passed away on July 12, 1995.
Paul retired from Crane N.A.D. in 1971 after 30 years. He started there working for the contractors who built Crane and then went to work for the Navy when the depot opened. He also owned the Martin County General Store at Roland for many years where he always enjoyed the company of all the neighbors and friends who would be in and out of the store daily.
Paul was baptized in Sam's Creek in the 1930's and became a member of Beechwood Christian Church in 1977. He was the oldest active member of the church, never missing Sunday morning services.
Surviving are two children, Maxine Rae Wininger and husband Bob; Paul Lester Allen and wife Patty; five grandchildren, Phyllis, Barry, Glen, Jill and Bradley; seven great-grandchildren, Justin, Daniel, Jessica, Damon, Stephenie, Amber and Jack; one sister, Zora Jones of Vincennes; and 38 nieces and nephews.
