Thelma Matney, 82, of Indianapolis, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004.
Born Oct. 10, 1922, in Oneida, Ky., she was the daughter of Walter and Rose Lee (Bishop) Woods, both deceased. She married Virgil Matney Feb. 26, 1940; he preceded her in death Sept. 26, 1988.
Mrs. Matney was a housewife. She had lived in Indianapolis for 15 years. Prior to that she had lived in Rushville and Andersonville. She was a member of Restoration Church in Franklin.
Survivors include one son, Danny Matney of Rushville; one daughter, Barbara (Mrs. Paul) Hilligoss of Indianapolis; one brother, Melvin Woods of Cincinnati, Ohio; three sisters, Annie Dwenger of Batesville and Hazel (Mrs. Cecil) Pennington and Edith (Mrs. Carl) Pennington, both of Mt. Sterling, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Moster & Cox Mortuary in Rushville with Pastor David Stephenson officiating. Burial will follow in Hopewell Cemetery in Rush County. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.
Marjorie Newton Brockman
Marjorie Newton Brockman, 81, of Richmond and formerly of Laurel, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004.
Born July 24, 1923, in Rush County, she was the daughter of Lonnie and Pearl (Nicholson) Rowe, both deceased. She married Erskin Brockman in 1992; he survives.
Mrs. Brockman lived in Laurel from 1948 to 1992, when she moved to Richmond. She worked at Ford (and its successors) in Connersville from 1944 to 1985. She was a member of Community Gospel Church.
Survivors in addition to her husband include three sons, Ralph Bergen (and wife Billie) of Cambridge City, Dwight Newton (and wife Nancy) of Connersville and Bennie Newton (and wife Cindy) of Moscow; six daughters, Ruby Shera of Connersville, Novice Stikeleather of Florida, Vickie (Mrs. Allen) McIntosh of Brookville, Barbara (Mrs. Mark) Idzerda of Laguna Beach, Calif., and Sonja (Mrs. Jim) Hicks and Cheryl (Mrs. Keith) Lawrence, both of Milton; five step children, Russell, Carlos, Clayton, Cleo and Randall; 27 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Kathleen Fowler of Connersville.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Community Gospel Church, with the Rev. Robert E. Lee officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel North Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home in Connersville and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

J.R. Brown
J.R. Brown, 84, of Rushville, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette.
Born June 30, 1920, in Gosport, he was the son of E.F. and May (Cherry) Brown, both deceased. He married Helena Jane Dyer June 14, 1947; she preceded him in death March 13, 1989. He married Mary Eleanor Kinnett Aug. 25, 1989; she preceded him in death Jan. 24, 1990. He married Polly Bridgewater Dec. 7, 1990; she survives.
Mr. Brown was a 1938 graduate of Rushville High School and a 1942 graduate of Purdue University, where he studied Ag Education. He was active in several programs at Purdue including John Purdue Club, President's Council, Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, Purdue Varsity Club, and he was a two year football letterman. He was a lifelong Rush County farmer, and a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Rushville Elks Lodge and Rushville American Legion. A World War II veteran, he was with the U.S. Marine Air Corps, reaching the rank of Major and serving as a dive bomber pilot in the Pacific Theater. He was also an active member and served as a director of Rush County Farm Bureau for many years.
Survivors in addition to his wife include one step son, James Rhynearson (and wife Cathy) of Fortville; one step daughter, Diane (Mrs. Daniel) Dunham of Point Isabel; two sisters, Betty Peterkin of Solomons, Md., and Mary Sandleben of Evansville; and two grandsons.
Besides his parents and first two wives he was preceded in death by one brother.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Moster & Cox Mortuary in Rushville, with the Rev. Allen Phillips officiating. Entombment will follow in East Hill Shrine Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the charity of the donor's choice.

Born July 28, 1979, in Butler, Pa., he was the son of Gib Johnson Sr. and Peggy (Burton) Carpenter; both survive. He married Shelia Moore Dec. 5, 2000; she survives.
Mr. Johnson was a tree trimmer.
Survivors in addition to his parents and wife include one son, Thomas G. Johnson Jr. of Greensburg; three daughters, Mackenzie, Mercadies and Patience Johnson, all of Greensburg; three brothers, Gilbert L. Johnson Jr., Clinton and William Michael Johnson, all of Greensburg; and one sister, Maudeanna Ditty of Greensburg.
He was preceded in death by one brother.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg, with Mark Vice officiating. Burial will follow in Hebron Cemetery in Adams. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Grayson J. Mahin
Grayson J. Mahin, 88, of Rushville, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at Miller s Merry Manor.
Born Aug. 21, 1916, in Rushville, he was the son of Wilbur and Ethel (Hurst) Mahin, both deceased. He married Lois M. Higham Oct. 17, 1943; she preceded him in death Aug. 3, 2001.
Mr. Mahin lived most of his life in Rushville and was a 1934 graduate of Rushville High School. He graduated from Franklin College with a B.A. in 1938 and received his Master s Degree from Butler University. A civics and government teacher, he began his career at Burney High School in Decatur County prior to serving with the U.S. Army in World War II. Following his discharge in 1945 he returned to teaching in Manilla, moved to Rushville High School in 1951, and retired from teaching in 1981. He served as athletic director at Rushville High School. He had also been the high school s baseball coach and assistant football coach. An active member of Main Street Christian Church, he had served as an Elder and a Deacon. He had also been a Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the F.O.P., Rush County Historical Society, the American Legion, and the state and county retired teachers associations. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from RCHS in 2002. He had served as Dean at Hoosier Boys State. He had been a basketball and track official for the IHSAA. He was an avid RCHS sports fan and a Golden Booster Club member.
Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Mahin of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Marcia Vance of Rushville; one brother, Louis Mahin of Greenfield; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents and wife he was preceded in death by an infant daughter.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Moster & Cox Mortuary in Rushville, with the Rev. Hank Anderson and the Rev. Becky Gibbons officiating. Burial will follow in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.

Born Sept. 11, 1913, in Laurel, she was the daughter of Jesse and Sylvia (Robbins) Patterson, both deceased. She married the Rev. Wm Thomas Spoonamore Feb. 2, 1933; he preceded her in death Oct. 4, 1991.
Mrs. Spoonamore was a homemaker who had lived most of her life in Rush and Franklin counties. She had lived in Freetown since 1980. She was a member of Freetown Nazarene Church.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas Nelson Tee Spoonamore of Westport and Phillip Dean Spoonamore of Freetown; one daughter, Glenna Dawn (Mrs. Charles L.) Brooks of Mooresville; three brothers, Alva Patterson and Dale Patterson, both of Rushville, and Norman Patterson of Shelbyville; one sister, Linda (Mrs. Robert) Lanter of St. Paul; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one daughter, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two brothers and one sister.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Moster & Cox Mortuary in Rushville, with Everett Quinton officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel North Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
