Dave DeWitt, 36, of Rushville, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Hardin was a native of Guilford County and served in the U.S. Army. He was formerly employed at Moster & Sons Mortuary in Rushville, Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Service in Greensboro, N.C., and retired from Smurfit-Stone Corp. in Greensboro, N.C. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Asheboro, president of Mid-State Beagle Club, and a member of Carolina Beagle Club. Survivors include wife Martha A. Hardin; two sons, Randall James Hardin (and wife Chris) of Greensboro, N.C., and Nathan Worth Hardin (and wife Barbara) of Summerfield, N.C.; two daughter, Deborah Sue Tilley and Cynthia Annette (Mrs. Doug) Biggs, both of Greensboro, N.C.; one brother, Donald H. Hardin (and wife Nancy) of Arlington; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel in Asheboro, with Dr. John S. Rogers officiating. Carmen K. Reed, 80, of Rushville, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at W.S. Major Hospital in Shelbyville. Born Aug. 2, 1942, in Brookville, she was the daughter of Opal and America (Lovins) Thompson, both deceased. She married James E. Dixon on April 6, 1962; he preceded her in death. Mrs. Dixon was a homemaker, and a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Rushville. Survivors include two daughters, Paula (Mrs. Donald) Girdler of Shelbyville and Loretta (Mrs. Shane) Ritter of Rushville; two sons, Danny Dixon (and wife Janet) and Jamie Dixon (and wife Angie), both of Rushville; four sisters, Loretta (Mrs. Walker) Halcomb of Knightstown, Dorothy (Mrs. Denver) Reese of Connersville, and Ruby (Mrs. Charles) Denham and Phyllis (Mrs. Robert) Jacobs, both of Rushville; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Besides her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two brothers and a grandson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service in Shelbyville, with the Rev. Kenneth Bates and the Rev. Travis Girdler officiating. Burial will follow in Hopewell Cemetery in Milroy. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Betty Jean Barnard, 64, of Rushville, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Rush Memorial Hospital in Rushville. Born May 22, 1937, in Stanford, Ky., he was the son of the late George and Katie L. (Phillips) Hazlett; she survives. On July 23, 1960, he married Bertha 'Lee' House; she survives. Mr. Hazlett owned and operated Hazlett Drywall for more than 40 years. A former member of the U.S. Navy, he was a member of Blue River Wesleyan Church, the Thunder Road Car Club, and the Pioneer Steam Engine Club. Survivors in addition to his mother and wife include two daughters, Karen (Mrs. James) Hunt of Carthage and Jane Hazlett of Mays; four sisters, Sue Fox and Ruby Gander, both of Stanford, Ky., Virginia Craine of Louisville, Ky., and Serena Mullikan of Richmond, Ky.; and five grandchildren. Besides his father, he was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Frazier Funeral Home in Morristown. Burial, which will include graveside military rites, will follow in Arlington East Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are requested to the American Lung Association.
