JERRY RAY SANDERS, 53, Borden, died Sunday, February 15. Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 19, at Geary Funeral Home in Fordsville, Kentucky.

HAROLD WEILBAKER, 84, Fredericksburg, died Tuesday, February 17, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. He was the retired owner of Weilbaker Auto Service Station in Palmyra, a member of Christian Church in Hardinsburg and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he was held as a POW in Germany. Survivors include his wife, Lillian Pennington Weilbaker; four daughters, Bonnie King of New Albany, Patsy Melton and Karen Packwood, both of Charlestown, and Denise Couch of Clarksville; a sister, Frances Hammon of Charlestown; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Friday, February 20, at Love Funeral Home in Palmyra with burial in Kays Chapel in Fredericksburg.

MARTHA GERTRUDE (BANET) GESENHUES, 81, New Albany, died Wednesday, February 18, at Providence Retirement Home. She was a native of Floyds Knobs and a member of St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church. Survivors include a son, Jerry Gesenhues of Sellersburg; two daughters, Carolyn Sutton of Brownsburg and Patricia Gefert of Concord Township, Ill.; a sister, Ethel Book of New Albany; a brother, Elmer Banet of Mattoon, Ill.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, February 21, at St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. Generations Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

FRANK JOSEPH TOBY, 86, Floyds Knobs, died Sunday, February 15. He was a farmer and had been named Farmer of the Year in 1986. He was a member of St. Joseph Hill Catholic Church in Sellersburg. Survivors include his wife, Viola (Sprigler) Toby; two daughters, Patricia T. Stumler of Floyds Knobs and Angela T. Ratledge of Dearborn, Mi.; a brother, Joseph P. Toby of Sellersburg; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral Mass was held on Friday, February 20, at St. Joseph Hill Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. SHIRLEY ANN GIVANS, 71, Charlestown, died Thursday, February 19, at Clark Memorial Hospital. She was a native of West Virginia and a retired custodian for Greater Clark County Schools while serving at Charlestown Middle School. She was a member of the VFW Post 1427 Auxiliary, the American Legion Post 204 Auxiliary and the North Charlestown Church of God. Survivors include seven sons, Alan Russell Givans of Sellersburg, Butch Givans of Dorset, England, Gene Givans of Borden, Ricky Givans of Thornton, Ca., Tommy Givans of Clarksville, and Doug Givans and Jerry Givans, both of Charlestown; two daughters, Brenda Talkington of Thornton, Ca., and Linda Gabbard of Greenwood; five brothers, Charles Neal Jr. of West Virginia, James Neal of Manassas, Va., Cletis Neal of Virginia, Curtis Neal of Alexandria, Va., and Larry Neal of Virginia; three sisters, Peggy Hamn of Bumfries, Va., Loretta Sutherland of Columbus, Ohio, and Linda Lewis of Virginia; 19 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 21, at Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown with burial in Charlestown Cemetery. THELMA C. (RICHESON) ABBOTT WENNING, 83, New Albany, died Wednesday, February 18, at Green Valley Care Center in New Albany. She was a member of Culbertson Baptist Church and Mothers and Others Sunday School class. She was a past matron of Milltown Order of the Eastern Star #412 and past matron of New Albany OES #340. She was a past guardian of Job’s Daughters Bethels #12 and #42, a member of Business and Professional Women’s Association and past president of The Dietary Managers Association. She had been president of the Residents Council of Green Valley Care Center and retired from Green Valley Care center as dietary supervisor. Survivors include her husband, J.P. Wenning; three daughters, Patricia Pfeifer of Indianapolis, Susie Goens of Indianapolis and Betty Thomas of New Albany; a stepdaughter, Linda Thomas of Ramsey; two stepsons, James Wenning of Depauw and John Wenning of Ramsey; three brothers, Charles Richeson of Martinsville, Harold Richeson of Indianapolis and Ralph Richeson of Franklin; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 21, at the Oak Street Chapel of Seabrook Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin. MARY LUCILLE KORTE, 86, Clarksville, died Thursday, February 19, at Floyd Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Campbellsburg, Kentucky, a retired employee of the old H.A. Seinsheimers Co. and a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Clarksville. Survivors include a son, James A. Korte of Clarksville; two daughters, Charlotte Popp and Carolyn “Carol” Newman, both of Clarksville; daughters-in-law, Jane Korte of Jeffersonville, Anna Korte of Georgetown and Charlene Korte of Crossville, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Funeral Mass was held on Monday, February 23, at St. Anthony Catholic Church with burial in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Charlestown. Kraft Funeral Service handled the arrangements. HENRY THOMAS GURTZ, 78, Depauw, died Friday, February 20, at Indian Creek Health & Rehabilitation Center in Corydon. He was a retired self-employed restaurateur. Survivors include three sons, Elmer Thomas Gurtz of Central, Steven Lee Gurtz of New Albany and Terry Lynn Gurtz of Lanesville; a son-in-law, David Maddox of New Albany; a brother, James F. Gurtz of Depauw; a sister, Alphrietta Jones of Milltown; and two grandchildren. BERTHA M. "BUTZ" MEYER, 83, Sellersburg, died Monday, February 16, at her home. She was a native of Starlite and a member of St. Joe Hill Catholic Church and the St. Joe Quilters Club. Survivors include two sons, Jim Meyer and Tommy Meyer, both of Sellersburg; two daughters, Betty Ann Butler of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, and Alma Rose Marks of Redding. G.O. "SKIP" ROGERS, 59, Marysville, died Monday, February 16, at Jewish Hospital. He was a native of Louisville, a U.S. Army veteran, a retired security director for Greater Clark County Schools, a licensed auctioneer and a former school bus driver for Charlestown High School. He was a member of First Christian Church in Charlestown and National Auctioneers Association, a past master of New Washington Masonic Lodge #167 and Jeffersonville Masonic Lodge #340 and a 4-H shooting sports instructor in Harrison County. Survivors include his wife, the former Cheryl Owen; three sons, Robert D. Rogers of Jeffersontown, Kentucky, Cecil O. Rogers of Charlestown and Wesley G. Rogers of Marysville; a brother, Kenneth Rogers; two half-brothers; one half-sister; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Friday, February 20, at the First Christian Church. Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown handled the arrangements.

LUCY CATHERINE MOSS, 66, Campbellsburg, died Sunday, February 15, at Corozal Hospital in Corozal, Belize. She was a native of Leavenworth, a former employee of the old Bata Shoe Company in Salem, and retired from Tecumseh Products Salem Operations. Survivors include her companion, Dale Marshall of Salem; five daughters, Lillian Voyles and Leslie Fraley, both of Borden, Christine Carroll of Charlestown, Carol Jean Hodges of Lebanon, Tenn., and Penny Moss of Salem; two sons, Walter Moss and Bradley Moss Jr., both of Salem; a brother, Ollie Knowland of New Albany; a sister, Violet Michaels of Nashville; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A private service was held. The body was cremated. Dawalt Funeral Homes handled the arrangements.

FRANK ANTHONY CHZANOWSKI, 83, Charlestown, died Friday, February 20, at Wedgewood Manor Healthcare Center. He was a native of Gowanda, NY, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a retired foreman for U.S. Steel and a member of the Community Presbyterian Church. Survivors include two daughters, Brenda A. Blue of Plainfield and Dianna L. Ludwig of Charlestown; four sisters, Violet Szymanski of South Dayton, NY, Virginia Barlow of Clarksville, Tenn., Rose Decker of Gowanda, NY, and Helen Willis of Kennedy, NY; and four grandchildren. DOROTHY MAE PITTMAN, 68, Charlestown, died Saturday, February 21, at Floyd Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Warsaw, Kentucky, and a former employee of The Old Pirate House Restaurant. Survivors include two sons, James Ray Pittman of Charlestown and Robert Lee Caswell; and two sisters, Mary Wade and Virginia Jenkins, both of Charlestown. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 24, at Grayson Funeral Home with burial in Charlestown Cemetery.

ELGAN L. MILLER MD, 64, New Albany, died Wednesday, February 18, at his home. A native of Owensboro, Kentucky, he began his OB-GYN practice in New Albany and maintained it until his retirement in 2000. He was a professor at the Ivy Tech State College nursing program in Sellersburg, a member of the American College of OB-GYN and a former member of the Floyd County Medical Society. Survivors include his wife, the former Suzanne Throgmorton; three daughters, Julie Baltenberger of Lexington, Kentucky, Kathy Rolley of Owensboro, Kentucky, and Jamie Hayden of Louisville; a sister, Patsy Hudson of Owensboro, Kentucky; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Monday, February 23, at Kraft Funeral Service with burial in Floydsburg Cemetery in Crestwood, Kentucky. JEROME "BUTCH" DAY, 64, Sellersburg, died Thursday, February 19, in Scottsdale, Arizona while on vacation. He was a native of New Albany and a retired engineer for Bell South Telephone. He was the president of the board of directors of the Jeffersonville Community Kitchen, an alumnus of Bellarmine University and a member of St. Joseph Hill Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Phillips Day; two sons, Pat Day of Sellersburg and Mike Day of Nashville, Tenn.; two daughters, Kelly Galvin of Nashville and Erin Coyle of Louisville; two sisters, Joyce Williams of New Albany and Lynne Pope of Owensboro, Kentucky; and nine grandchildren. RONALD "KENT" GUTHRIE, 59, Campbellsburg, died Monday, February 16, at his home. A native of Bloomington, he was employed by the town of Campbellsburg as Water and Waste Water Supervisor. He was a graduate of Ball State University where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and a member of Church of God in Idaville. Survivors include his wife, the former Patricia Hines; a daughter, Jill Marie Guthrie of Butner, NC; a brother, Keith Guthrie of Campbellsburg; two sisters, Becky Gibbons of Pittsboro and Betty Artman of Bedford; his mother, Vivian Guthrie of Pittsboro; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Friday, February 20, at Weathers Funeral Home with burial in Cavetown Cemetery.

LARRY LONG, 51, Fredericksburg, died Tuesday, February 17, at his brother’s home in Orleans. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a carpenter. Survivors include a stepson, Brandon Call of Salem; two stepdaughters, Samantha Sullivan of Jeffersonville and Mary Sullivan of Hardinsburg; five brothers, David of Scottsburg, Donald of Marion, Frank of Salem, James of Fredericksburg, and Glen of Orleans; three sisters, Eva Leachman of New Haven, Kentucky, Betty Herzog of Alliance, Nebraska, and Leila Edmondson of Salem; and two grandchildren. A memorial service was held on Saturday, February 21 at Kays Chapel Cemetery. The body was cremated.

GERALD GENE HOKE, 54, Salem, died Tuesday, February 17, at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville. A native of Pekin, he was retired from PSI as a journeyman lineman and was a member of IBEW Union. Survivors include his wife, the former Verneda Packard; two sons, Eric Gene Hoke of Salem and Brent Barkely of Spencer; two daughters, Julia Dawn Madden of Salem and Lisa Harty of Indianapolis; a brother, Vincent Hoke of Salem; two sisters, Marla Sweeney of Otisco adn Carla Strom of Campbellsville, Kentucky; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Friday, February 20, at Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home with burial in Fairview Cemetery in Orleans.

CONNIE S. HUNDLEY, 42, Hardinsburg, died Monday, February 16. Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 19, at Brown-Newkirk Funeral Home in Milltown.

PEARL BARGER, 85, Salem, died Friday, February 20, at Meadowview Health Care Center. She was a native of Bowlingtown, Kentucky, and a retired employee of the Charlestown Powder Plant. She attended Westside Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Rollan Barger of Michigan; seven daughters, Marie Coldiron of West Chester, Ohio, Margie Brumley of Bethel, Ohio, Rebecca Watson of Amelia, Ohio, Gaynell Scott and Sharon Barger, both of Greenville, Tenn., Phyllis DeVries of North Ridgeville, Ohio, and Veda Strange of Salem; a brother, Bill Barger of Prestonburg, Kentucky; a sister, Violet Dixon of Cleves, Ohio; 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Monday, February 23, at Weathers Funeral Home with burial in New Liberty Cemetery near Salem.

G. CARL GUCKENBERGER, 88, Cincinnati, Ohio, died on Tuesday, February 17, in Cincinnati. He was a member of the Hanselmann Lodge 208, F&AM, ScottishRite, Mystic Shrine and Westwood United Methodist Church. He was also a life member of the General Protestant Orphanage Home and served on the board of directors of the Westwood Civic Association. He was a former Cub Scout Master of Troop 30, Boy Scouts of America. Survivors include three sons, the Rev. Dale Edward Guckenberger, John David Guckenberger and the Hon. Guy Carl Guckenberger Sr.; a daughter, Jane Elizabeth Guckenberger Dobbins of Scottsburg; a brother, Herman John Guckenberger; three sisters, Charlotte Elizabeth Kruse, Alma Louise Berghausen and Vera Jean Hinkle; 12 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted on Friday, February 20, at Westwood United Methodist Church following a memorial Masonic service. ALBERT EMLY, 97, Pekin, died on Tuesday, February 10, at Meadow View Health and Rehabilitation Center in Salem, where he had been residing. A retired farmer, he was born in Scipio and was a member of Bunker Hill Christian Church. Survivors include a son, Hubert Emly of Crothersville; a daughter, Ruth Ellen Kelley of Scottsburg; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his caretaker, Leon Ford. The funeral was conducted on Saturday, February 14, at Love Funeral Home in Palmyra. Burial was in Reddington Cemetery.

ROSA LEE "ROSALEE" SAUERHAGE, 75, Columbus, died on Sunday, February 15, at Columbus Regional Hospital. A resident of Madison for many years, she was born in Gloversville, N.Y., and had moved to Columbus in September, 2003. She was a homemaker. Survivors include a daughter, Jeanne Storm of Columbus; four brothers, Bill Snell of Bedford, Ky., John Snell of Milton, Ky., Floyd Snell of Madison and George Snell of Scottsburg; and two grandchildren. The funeral was conducted at the Morgan-Webster-Nay Funeral Home in Madison on Friday, February 20. Pastor Judy Howard Snell officiated. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Gardens in Madison. EDNA MAY SUDLOW, 91, Madison, died on Saturday, February 14, at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville. She was a native of Columbus, Ohio, and was a retired employee of the old U.S. Shoe Corporation. Memberships included North Madison Christian Church, Ladies of the Moose and Order of Eastern Star 530 of Madison. Survivors include four sons, Richard Sudlow of Hanover, Robert Sudlow of Lexington, Ronald Sudlow of Laughlin, W.V., and Edward Sudlow of Arlington Heights, Il.; two daughters, Judy Bane of Scottsburg and Carol Stoeffler of Loudon, Tn.; 18 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted on Wednesday, February 18, at Vail-Holt Funeral Home in Madison. The Rev. Lionel Talbott officiated. Burial was in Bayless Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be arranged through the staff of the funeral home to benefit Scottsburg First Christian Church.

DALE L. McNEELY, 71, Hanover, died on Thursday, February 12. Born in Scott County, he was a graduate of Hanover College, where he set a track record in 1955 in low hurdles. He taught and coached boys’ basketball at New Marion High School, Charlestown High School and Jeffersonville High School, and he was the only Indiana coach to win three sectional titles in three consecutive years at three different high schools. In 1966, he joined the staff of Pikeville College in Pikeville, Ky., as head basketball coach and assistant professor of education and director of student teachers. He was recognized in 1972 as a Kentucky Colonel for his leadership in the field of education in eastern Kentucky. When he retired from coaching, he served as dean of admissions at Pikeville and as president of Kentucky College and University Admissions Officers in 1975. He served eight years at Paoli Community Schools as assistant principal and athletic director and was honored as District 5 Athletic Director of the Year in 1978. He also started the first girls’ basketball team at Paoli. Before he retired, he served as principal at Cannelton High School and was elected to the Indiana High School Athletics Association board of director for three years. Other community involvement included serving as president of the Orange County Unit of the American Cancer Society, as a member of the Perry County Unit of the American Cancer Society and president of the Cannelton Kiwanis Club. After retiring, he served as director of the Alumni Association of Hanover College, president of the Hanover Club of Southeastern Indiana, a member of the board of the Jefferson County Animal Shelter and a trustee of the Southwestern Community Schools board. He was also inducted into the Hanover College Athletic Hall of Fame. He served as president of the Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association and was an elder and a member of Hanover Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his widow, Martha McNeely; two brothers, Delmar McNeely and Leland McNeely, both of Lexington; and a sister, Hazel Fern Bridgewater of Scottsburg. Visitation is planned today (Saturday) at the Vail-Holt Funeral Home, Hanover Chapel, from 3 to 8 p.m. and after 12 noon on Sunday, February 23, at the Southwestern High School gymnasium. The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the gym. The Rev. James Richards and the Rev. Randy L. McNeely will officiate. Entombment will be in Hanover Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be arranged through the staff of the funeral home to benefit the Dale McNeely Memorial Scholarship Fund of Hanover College or Pikeville College.

CURTIS EDWARD LEMONS, 4 months, of Seymour, died on Saturday, February 14, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born in Seymour. Survivors include his mother, Laura Lynn Lemons of Seymour; his stepfather, Andy Howard of Scottsburg; his grandparents, Bob and Sharon Lemons of West Palm Beach, Fl.; and several great- and great-great-grandparents. A memorial service was conducted on Tuesday evening, February 17, at the Adams Funeral Home in Crothersville. The Rev. Todd Robertson officiated. Memorial gifts may be arranged through the staff of the funeral home to benefit Methodist Pediatrics.

J. RONALD MINER, 65, Corvallis, Or., died at his home on Tuesday, February 10. He was born in Scottsburg and had formerly lived in Indianapolis and Lawrence, Ks. He held a bachelor of science degree from University of Kansas and earned an MSE in sanitary engineering at the University of Michigan. His Ph.D. in chemical engineering and microbiology was earned at Kansas State University, where he began his career. He also served on the staff of Iowa State University, where he patented a slatted hog house floor. He taught, did research and served in several capacities at Oregon State University, retiring there as Professor Emeritus from the Bioengineering Department. He also served as an environmental engineer for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Singapore and was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Malawi in 1998. He had served on short term assignments in a large number of countries and had planned to be a Visiting Scholar in Taiwan at the time of his death. He co-authored two books on livestock waste management and authored or co-wrote six other books as well as referred journal articles and over 100 symposia proceedings and extension publications. He also wrote three books of children’s sermons. Memberships included the First Presbyterian Church in Corvallis, the Water Pollution Control Federation, Sigma Xi, Gamma Sigma Delta, Alpha Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi. He was also a Fellow of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers and shared the Associated Projects Outstanding 4-H Leader of the Year honors in 1999. He co-taught the 4-H Junior Toastmasters Public Speaking program for 21 years. Survivors include his widow, the former Betty Emery; a son, Frederick G. Miner of Los Angeles, Ca.; two daughters, Saralena M. Bailey of Channahon, Il., and Katherine A. Marstall of New Orleans, La.; a brother, Michael E. Miner of Worthington, Ohio; four grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at his church today (Saturday) at 1:30 p.m. Memorial gifts may be arranged through the staff of the DeMoss Durden Garden Chapel, 815 N.W. Buchanon, Corvallis, OR 97330. Gift requests include the American Society of Agricultural Engineers Foundation, the Ron and Betty Miner Presidential Scholarship, Oregon State University or the Corvallis First Presbyterian Church’s Capital Campaign.
