JAMES E. SPARKS, 80, Borden, died Wednesday, October 9, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Louisville. A native of Trent, Kentucky, he was a retired farmer and a former employee of the Roberts & Strack Veneer Company in Clarksville. He was a member of the Lear Hill United Baptist Church near Pekin and served in World War II as a Water Tender 2nd Class in the U.S. Navy. Survivors include his brother-in-law, John Bennett of Campbellsburg, who cared for him; two nephews; and one niece. Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 12, at Lear Hill United Baptist Church with burial in Cavetown Cemetery in Campbellsburg. Dawalt Funeral Home handled the arrangements. NORMA JEAN BANDY, 67, Corydon, died Friday, October 11, at Harrison Health and Rehabilitation Center. A native of Depauw, she was a former processor at Tyson Foods and a member of Fountain United Methodist Church. Survivors include her daughter, Rebecca Cole of Corydon; a step-daughter, Linda Reas of English; a step-son, Donald G. Bandy of Paducah; three brothers, Raymond Schwartz of Clewison, Florida, and Richard and Nolan Schwartz, both of Corydon; three sisters, Ruth Davis of Fort Wayne, Leota Simon of Depauw and Ellen Myers of Corydon; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Monday, October 14, at Swarens Funeral Home in Ramsey with burial in Pitman Cemetery in Depauw. LOUIS L. UTRECHT, 83, New Albany, died Friday, October 11, at Providence Retirement Home in New Albany. He was a native of New Albany and a retired PBX repairman for Bell South Telephone Company in Louisville. He was a United States Army World War II veteran and a member of VFW Hobart Beach Post #1693, Telephone Pioneers of America and the old Church of Christ Church in Sellersburg. Survivors include his son, William H. Utrecht of New Albany; two daughters, Katherine A. Beets and Mary Helen Williams, both of New Albany; a sister, Marilyn Lahr of West Lafayette; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 15, at the Oak Street Chapel of Seabrook, Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Home with private burial. OPAL GREGORY, 81, Sellersburg, died Saturday, October 12, at Southern Indiana Health and Rehab Center. A native of Leitchfield, Kentucky, she was the former Minnie Opal Vertrees and retired as a nurse's aide from Westminster Village. She was a member of the Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church in Leitchfield. Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Ricketts of Borden and Sharon Fox of New Albany; three sons, Mitchell Gregory of Jeffersonville, Russell Glenn Gregory of Sellersburg and Eslia Gregory of Jeffersonville; one sister, Lois Solden of Flint, Mi.; 14 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 16, at 11 a.m., at Garr Funeral Home. ALTON D. MARTIN, 89, New Albany, died Saturday, October 12, at the Providence Retirement Home. A native of Bloomington, he was a retired employee of the United States Postal Service and a member of Depauw Memorial United Methodist Church in New Albany where he served as treasurer. Survivors include his wife, the former Lelia A. Welles; two daughters, Mary Hollis of New Albany and Betty Martin of Louisville; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 16, at 1 p.m., at Depauw Memorial United Methodist Church with entombment in Graceland Memorial Park. She was a member of the old Capitol United Methodist Church in Corydon. McCOSKEY, 78, Scottsburg, died Thursday, October 10, at Scott Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Pekin and a homemaker. Survivors include her son, Mike McCoskey of Pekin; a brother, Bob Rockey of Pekin; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services were conducted Monday, October 14, at the Dawalt Funeral Home, with burial in the Bethel Cemetery in Pekin. GEORGE NEWBY, 75, Salem, died Sunday, October 13, at the Washington County Hospital. A native of Hyden, he was retired from the City of Salem. Survivors include three sons, John Newby of Winston-Salem, N.C., Levi Newby of Swansboro, N.C. and Tim Newby of Pekin; four daughters, Sandra Tolliver of Harlan, Kentucky, Noe'l Newby of Indianapolis, and Bonnie Newby and Georgetta Newby, both of Panama City, Florida; two brothers; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 16, at 1 p.m. at the Love Funeral Home in Palmyra with burial in Martinsburg Cemetery. RUTH MARIE KLUK, 79, New Washington, died Saturday, October 12, at her home. She was a native of Otto and a member of the Bethel Christian Church. Survivors include her daughter, Brenda Dickey; and two grandchildren. Graveside services were held on Monday, October 14, at Turner Cemetery. Graysons's New Washington Funeral Home handled the arrangements. GINA M. WHALEN, 44, Sellersburg, died Friday, October 11, at Clark Memorial Hospital. The former Gina Marie Walcott, she was a customer service representative for Hinton-Corby Insurance Agency. She served as a Brownie Troop leader, forming a troop in Sellersburg, and was involved in many community service projects and gardening. Survivors include her husband, Dave Whalen; her daughter, Nicolette Whalen of Sellersburg; her mother, Betty Walcott Culton of Louisville; her father, Allen Walcott of Bardstown, Kentucky; four sisters, Janet Manning of Louisville, Amber Alvey of Missouri, Joy Hartz of Jeffersonville and Laura Walcott of New Albany; a brother, Cliff Walcott of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Monday, October 14, at Garr Funeral Home with burial in St. Joseph Church Cemetery. A native of Evansville, she was a teacher of Green Acres Elementary School in Clarksville and a member of Morton Memorial United Methodist Church in Clarksville and Psi Iota Xi. Survivors include her son, Brad Walker of Louisville; her daughter, Christy Lucas of Charlestown; her mother, Velma Murray of Sellersburg; and one grandchild. Reading of Charlestown; a son, Robert Breeden of Crestwood, Kentucky; a brother, Verlin Breeden of Indianapolis; a sister, Iola Neill of Ellettsville; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. MARK "MOOSE" BALMER, 49, Sellersburg, died Monday, October 7, at Floyd Memorial Hospital. He was the owner and operator of the M&S Trucking Company in Sellersburg and attended the Eastside Christian Church in Jeffersonville. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Kruer Balmer; a daughter, Sarah Balmer of Louisville; a son, Russell Balmer of Sellersburg; his parents, Homer (Chip) and Mabel Balmer of Sellersburg; a sister, Jennifer Balmer of Jeffersonville; a brother, Terry Balmer of Sellersburg; and one grandchild. Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 10, at Garr Funeral Home. The body was cremated. Smith of Columbus; a sister, Buelah Rogers of Sellersburg; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A native of Fredericksburg, he was a retired truck drive from Yellow Freight, a member of Teamsters Local 89 and on the New Albany Auxiliary Police Department. Survivors include his wife, the former Wanda Burns; three sons, Thomas Ballew of El Cajon, Cal., Daniel Ballew of Lusby, Md. and Samuel Ballew of New Albany; four daughters, Deborah Smith of Freeburg, Ill., Margaret Payton of Morgantown, Kathleen Meyer of Jeffersonville and Martha Brown of Sellersburg; two brothers, Charles Ballew of Beaver, Ohio and Roy Gene Ballew Jr. of New Albany; five sisters, Dorothy and Yvonne Ballew, both of Jeffersonville, Patricia Ballew of New Albany, Diane Zancy of Chicago and Sandra Currin of Jackson, Tenn.; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. HALL, 75, Salem, died Monday, October 7, at Nortons Hospital in Louisville. She was a life resident of Washington County and a member of the West Side Baptist Church. She was a retired employee of the old Smith Cabinet Manufacturing Company in Salem. Survivors include her husband, Henry Hall; two daughters, Judy L. Hall of Salem and Mardee McNay of Florence, South Carolina; a sister, Betty Jean Ashabraner of Springhill, Florida; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. MULL, 81, Salem, died Friday, October 4. He was the owner of the old Mull's General Store in South Boston. Also a farmer, he was a charter member of the Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department. A 1938 graduate of Salem High School, he was a former member of the Franklin Township Advisory Board, and a member of the Conway Community Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II having served in Germany. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie (Nelson) Mull of Salem; a son, Dale E. Mull of Jacksonville, Florida; two daughters, Carol Ann Gilliland of Houston and Mary L. McCarty of Salem; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. His body was donated to Indiana University School of Medicine. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 20, at 2 p.m. (EST) at Conway Church. A native of Borden, she was a retired employee of the old Amaray Plastics in Pekin. Survivors include two sons, Kevin Bateman of Salem and Kerry Bateman of Pekin; two sisters, Iva Standiford of Salem and Harriett McKinley of Borden; ten grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. A native of Washington County, she was the owner of Miller Fishing and Shooting Supplies and was in charge of the Kids Fishing Derby. She was also a member of Salem Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include her husband, Shannon Miller; two sons, Dylan and Logan Miller, both of Salem; a daughter, Lauren Miller of Salem; her parents, Raymond and Carron Weston of Salem; and two sisters, Pam Wells and Penny Hall, both of Salem.
