Orval W. Burgess
October 3, 1924 - January 15, 2006
Orval W. Burgess, 81, 5136 E. 350 S, Winamac died Jan. 15 at Pulaski Memorial Hospital. He was born Oct. 3, 1924 in Winamac to Elmer and Ruby (Sutton) Burgess.
On June 16, 1946 in Winamac he married Betty L. Marquis. She survives.
Orval was a member of the American Legion Post #71 and was a past president of the Pulaski County Historical Society and was a member of the Pulaski County Genealogical Society.
He had been employed at Von Tobel Lumber Co. in Winamac for 27 years. He served two terms as Pulaski County Recorder and one term as Pulaski County Treasurer.
He graduated from Star City High School in 1943 and entered the military the following November. He served in the U.S. Army in England, France and Germany during World War II. He was in the Battle of the Rhineland and was awarded the combat infantryman's badge, victory medal, army of occupation medal (Germany), EAME theater ribbon with one Bronze Star and good conduct medal. He was discharged in 1946 at the rank of first sergeant.
He enjoyed fishing and working on his farm. In his retirement he was a summer resident at his lake property on Lower McKenzie Lake near Spooner, Wis. His greatest joy in his life was his family. He was a loving, kind husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Surviving along with his wife Betty are a daughter, Cynthia Sue [Michael K.] Schultz and a son, Daniel W. [Julie] Burgess both of Winamac, seven grandchildren; Brian [Vicki] Schultz of Concord, N.C., Kristine [Steve] Christensen of Fairmount, Kari Schultz of Winamac, Joshua [Kimberly] Burgess of Star City, Rachel [Sam] Burns of Lafayette, Kyle [Amy] Burgess of Greenwood, and Brandon Burgess of Winamac. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren; Lyndsay Christensen and Bradley Christensen both of Fairmount, Haley Burns and Raegan Burns both of Lafayette, and Alexandria Schultz of Concord, N.C., and a brother Dale [Roxanne] Burgess of Pocatello, Idaho.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, L. Dean Burgess and Lyle Burgess. A Celebration of life will be held at Frain Mortuary on Friday, Jan. 20 at 1 p.m., with Rev. Dan Burgess officiating. Burial will take place in the Star City West Cemetery, with military graveside services by the American Legion and the VFW.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and after 8 a.m. on Friday at the Frain Mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Foundation or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Betty L. Flora
July 31, 1934 - January 10, 2006
Betty L. Flora, 71, of Monticello, died Jan. 10 at White County Memorial Hospital in Monticello. She was born July 31, 1934 in Indianapolis and was the daughter of Clarence and Margaret (Peterson) Hiner.
On July 16, 1950, in Indianapolis, she married Dr. G. Dudley Flora. He died Oct. 27, 1999.
Betty had been an Administrator for the Pulaski County Health Department from 1974 to 1990 and also the White County Health Department from 1991 to 1996. She served as Administrator of Admissions for Monticello Assisted Living and Healthcare Center from 2000 to 2003. Mrs. Flora was a past president of the Monticello Kiwanis Club. She was a charter member of the White County homeless task force board. She was a member of the Pulaski County Adult Protective Services, and also the Pulaski County Recycling Board. She was a member of the White and Pulaski County Civil Defense Boards. She was also a 30-year member of the Tippecanoe Country Club. She was active in Bridge-a-Rama, and the Red Hat Society. She had been a member of the First Baptist Church in Francesville from 1963 to 1990. After moving to Monticello, she became a member of the Monticello Christian Church.
Survivors include: a son, Kevin [Brenda] Flora of Orlando, Fla.; two daughters, Kimberly Plantenga [Kirby] Norwood of Monticello, and Leslie [Kevin] Weaver of West Lafayette; a brother, Wehman [Florence] Hiner of Venice, Fla., and a sister, Clara [Richard] Collins of Potomac, Md. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, three great-grandsons and a sister-in-law: Jean Hiner of Indianapolis. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. G. Dudley Flora and a brother Robert Hiner.
Funeral services were held on Jan. 13 at the Fisher-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home in Monticello with Rev. Dennis Gutwein officiating. Burial took place in the Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.

Ruth A. Raybould
September 9, 1928 - January 22, 2006
Ruth A. Raybould, 76, 5218 East Woodland Drive, Knox, died Jan. 22 at Starke Memorial Hospital. She was born Sept. 9, 1929 in Chicago to Melinda (Knoll) Wangerin.
On Oct. 29, 1949 in Chicago, she married John W. Raybould. He survives.
Ruth was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Winamac. She was an avid crossword puzzle solver. Ruth enjoyed sewing and needlework.
Surviving along with her husband, John, are: a daughter, Gayle [John] Conner of Winamac; a son, Gary A. [Paula] Raybould of Fishers; four grandchildren, Lori [Jason] Lee of Trafalgar, Jennifer [Tim] Zimmer of Brownsburg, Dana Conner of Winamac, and Jeffrey Raybould of Fishers. Also surviving are two great-grandchildren, Grace and Chloe Lee, both of Trafalgar. She was preceded in death by a sister, Loretta Wangerin.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. EST, Tuesday, Jan. 24 and after 8 a.m. Wednesday at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. A scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Frain Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Winamac on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 10:30 a.m. with Father John Mencsik officiating. Burial will take place in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Winamac.
Memorials may be given to the Juvenile Diabetes Association.

Jerry G. Hudson
August 11, 1959 - January 18, 2006
Jerry G. Hudson, 46, 1328 High Street, Logansport (formerly of Winamac) died Jan. 18 at Memorial Hospital in Logansport. He was born Aug. 11, 1959 in Ripley W.V., and was the son of Paul and Bernice (Guthrie) Hudson.
Jerry was a retired foreman of the sign crew of the Indiana State Highway Department. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping, and especially enjoyed raccoon hunting. He enjoyed working and spending time with co-workers, and working on small engines. Jerry had been in failing health for a year.
Survivors include: his mother Bernice Hudson of Winamac, two daughters: Whitney and Jeri Lynn Hudson, and two sons: Brent and William Hudson, all of Jefferson. Also surviving are two sisters: Judy Carol Hudson of Logansport and Linda Sue Hudson of Indianapolis, and two brothers: Michael Paul Hudson and Irvin L. Hudson, both of Logansport.
He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Hudson, and a sister, Lena Johnson.
Funeral services were held on Sunday Jan. 22 at the Frain Mortuary in Winamac, with Rev. Glen Myers officiating. Burial took place in the Star City West Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to a trust fund established for the children.

Richard Emanuel Kuhn
January 9, 2006
Those that attended the funeral of Richard Emanuel Kuhn at New Smyrna Beach, Fla. on Jan. 13, were: James Kuhn, Paul and Leona (Kuhn) Sommers all of Winamac. Agness L. (Kuhn) Bossung and Laddie Shuman of Monticello, and Mary (Kuhn) Pletka of Orlando, Fla.
Those locally that were able to attend were: Bernard and Francis (Kuhn) Knouff and Mr. James [Shirley Schramm] Kuhn of Winamac and Theresa (Kuhn) Olson, of Knox.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jonas Kuhn, Aug. 29, 1963 and Genevieve (Weaver) Kuhn, Oct. 16, 1984, also two sisters Sr. Ruth Ann Kuhn P.H.J.C., Jan.2, 1971, Bernice (Kuhn) Braun, June 28, 2004 and Clement Braun, Mar. 26, 2003. Also preceding in death are: two brothers Leonard Alvin Kuhn and Ralph Raymond Kuhn and his wife Ruth Ann and son David and a set of triplets that died at birth, two boys and a girl, Oct. 25, 1930.

Richard H. Winter
December 16, 1913 - January 2, 2006
Richard H. Winter, 92 of Phoenix, Ariz., died Jan. 2. He was born on Dec. 16, 1913 in Pulaski, to Mathias and Rose (Gilsinger) Winter. He was proceeded in death by his wife of 59 years, Luicile Winter.
He retired in 1974 from St. Joseph College, Rensselaer, then moved to Mesa, Ariz.
He is survived by six children and nine grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters: Ivy Nagle of Rensselaer and Farrell Matthews of South Bend, and two sisters-in-law: Mildred Winter of Winamac and Catherine Winter of Trenton, N.J.

Joshua D. Ward
August 24, 1986 - January 28, 2006
Joshua D. Ward, 19, of Warsaw, died Jan. 28 at his residence. He was born Aug. 24, 1986 in Winamac to Jason and Deana L. (Swartzell) Ward. His parents both survive.
Joshua was a resident of Kosciusko County (formerly of Winamac, IN.) for the past eight years and was employed at Trail-Lite, Winona Lake.
He attended Warsaw Community High School in Warsaw. He enjoyed spending time with his brother and friends, fishing, playing paint ball, and listening to music.
He was considered the best brother in the world by Joe, and he was always willing to take care of his family and friends.
He is survived by his parents; Jason L. and Deana L. Ward of Hoffman Lake - Warsaw, two brothers Joseph Ward of Warsaw and Jason C. [Kami] of Indianapolis; Aunts and Uncles, Kris and Steve Girton of Winamac, Mark and Diane Swartzell of South Carolina. Also surviving are numerous cousins and his maternal grandfather, David Swartzell of Winamac. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother.
Visitation is Tuesday, Jan. 31 from 4-8 p.m. at the Titus Funeral Home, 2000 E. Sheridan St., Warsaw.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday Feb. 1 at 10 a.m. at Titus Funeral Home in Warsaw, with Pastor Milton Gould officiating. Burial will take place at Stoney Point Cemetery in Atwood.
In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to Clunette United Methodist Church, c/o Pastor Milton Gould, 2415 N. Grandview Drive, Warsaw, IN., 46582 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
