Merl Fritz
September 21, 1948 - September 29, 2005
Merl Fritz, 57, of Star City, died Sept. 29 at Pulaski Memorial Hospital, Winamac. He was born Sept. 21, 1948 in Winamac and was the son of Joseph and Georgeann Lenora (Kroft) Fritz.
On Feb. 22, 1969 in Buffalo, he married Kathleen E. Boardman, who survives.
He was a member of Winamac Eagle's Lodge # 2580. He was very active in 4-H and had been sheep chairman and on the livestock committee. He was a machinist at the Braun Corporation for the past 30 years. He enjoyed fishing, working in his garden, mowing lawns in Star City and playing with children. He liked to travel and go to livestock shows and sales. He also had a passion for auctioneering. He loved to talk about his sons and grandchildren. He was always good with a laugh and a joke. He loved life.
Surviving is his wife, Kathleen, are three sons, Mark [Tina] Fritz, Star City, William Jason [Christine] Fritz, Rockwall, Texas, and Hans Lucus Fritz, Winamac, five grandchildren, Zachery Cristopher Fritz, Kaylee Anne Fritz and Kristen Alexie Fritz, all of Rockwall, Quest Alexander Fritz and Merissa Jean Fritz both of Winamac. Also surviving are a sister, Nancy Jo Wera, Frankfort, and a brother Lyn Fritz, Gainesville, Fla.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 3 at the Frain Mortuary in Winamac, with Pastor Dean Tanner officiating. Burial took place in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Winamac.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Bill L. DeWitt
October 16, 1935 - September 30, 2005
Bill L. DeWitt, 69 of Kewanna died Sept. 30 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth, following a short illness. He was born Oct. 16, 1935 in White County and was the son of Harrison and Ruth (DePoy) DeWitt.
On Nov. 22, 1957 at the Prairie Grove Church near Kewanna, he married Margaret Chizum, who survives. Bill drove a semi (truck) for many years and was a farmer. He loved and enjoyed his family. He also enjoyed, hunting, fishing, wood working, NASCAR racing and the great outdoors.
Survivors including his wife Margaret, three daughters, Barbara [Mike] Killian, Winamac, Beth [Eric] Burch, Rochester and Becky DeWitt-Sloan, Muncie, a son, Bryan DeWitt, Kewanna. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Aaron [Sara] Ewing, Ft. Gordon, Ga., Amy [Patrick] Berkshire, Winamac, Alyssa [Roy] Owens, Bass Lake, Brad Burch, Traci Burch and Sarah Burch, all of Rochester and one great-grandchild, Aiden Patrick Berkshire, Winamac. Bill is also survived by two sisters, Agnes [Bud] Forgey, Logansport, Carolyn [Gene] Shelpman, Akron, one brother, Gene [Willadean] DeWitt of Oxnard, Calif., and a brother-in-law, Milo Shriver, Akron. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dallas and Jerry DeWitt.
Funeral services were held at the Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester, on Oct. 4, with Rev. Woody Slade officiating. Burial took place in the Rochester IOOF cemetery.

Charles W. Speicher
January 28, 1921 - September 27, 2005
Charles W. Speicher, 84, of Francesville, died Sept. 27 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lafayette. He was born Jan. 28, 1921 in Francesville, to Reuben S. and Katherine L. (Kratzer) Speicher.
On March 30, 1947 in Medaryville, he married Doris Gene Madaus, who survives. Mr. Speicher was a retired farmer who loved working in his garden and apple orchard. He was a member of the Francesville American Legion. He served in the Army Tank Corp. during WWII. He enjoyed spending time with his family.
Surviving along with his wife Doris Gene are a daughter, Susan K. Hall, Lebanon, three sons Wayne C. [Susan] Speicher, Albany, Gene L. Speicher, Francesville, and David L. [Kim] Speicher, Morristown. Seven grandchildren. Charles was preceded in death by two brothers Ross Speicher and John Speicher, and two sisters, Louise Rhinehart and Bernice Kopkey.
Funeral services were held on Oct. 1 at Querry-Ulbricht Funeral Home in Francesville, with Pastor David Vanaman, officiating. Burial took place in the Roseland Cemetery in Francesville, where the American Legion held graveside services.

Joseph G. Herd
September 12, 1919 - September 29, 2005
Joseph G. Herd, 86, of Logansport, died Sept. 29 at the Chase Center in Logansport. He was born Sept. 12, 1919 in Lucerne to Pearlie John "P.J." and Essie B. (Gates) Herd.
On Dec. 13, 1946 in Versailles, he married Helen C. Holton, she died Aug. 12, 2005.
A 1937 graduate of Lucerne High School, Joe earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Indiana University School of Business in 1941.
Joe joined the United Marine Corps in May 1941 and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Major, having served in the 3rd Marine Division in the South Pacific during WWII. He was a member of the VFW Post #3790 and the American Legion Post #60.
He also received a degree in Bonds, Casualty and Property Insurance from New York University in 1946. From 1947 to 1950, he was general manager of the Ripley County Construction Company.
He founded the Joe Herd Agency, Inc., in 1951, with his wife Helen, who was his secretary for many years.
He was member of River of Life Christian Church, where he served on the Board of Directors. He was also a deacon for ten years at the Former Ninth Street Christian Church.
Joe was the former chairman for the Cass County Easter Seals Society. From 1973 to 1988 he was on the Board of Directors of the Vernon Fire and Casualty Company. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Farmers and Merchants State Bank.
For 35 years he served on the Cass County Election Board. His memberships include the former Orient Masonic Lodge, Logansport Shrine Club, Indianapolis Scottish Rite, Cass county Carousel Association, BPOElks #66, FOEagles #323, Moose #232, IU Alumni Association, Izaak Walton League and the FOP. He served as Board Secretary for the Indiana State Society for Crippled Children.
Joe was a long-time team sponsor and fan of Little League baseball, Men's softball, Pixie League, several bowling leagues and Cass County Family Y basketball. He was very much an avid fan and supporter of Logansport Berries sports teams as well as Big 10 sports. He enjoyed all types of racing especially the Indianapolis 500.
Survivors include: a daughter Jerry JoAnn [Michael] Hudson, Culver, two sons Tim F. [Jerrilyn] Herd, Indianapolis and Tom J. Herd, Logansport, also surviving are four grandchildren, Joe Hudson, Jill Hudson, Lindsay Herd and Justin Herd. He was preceded in death by a brother John Herd.
Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 9 at the Kroeger Funeral Home in Logansport. Burial will take place in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, near Logansport with Military Honors. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cass County Carousel Association, 1208 Riverside Drive, Logansport, IN. 46947.

Steven Jordan Burns
June 21, 1954 - September 29, 2005
Steven Jordan Burns 51, of Winamac, died Sept. 29 at Pulaski Memorial Hospital. He was born June 21, 1954 in Lafayette and was the son of James Glen and Irma (Jordan) Burns Lowry.
On Feb. 4, 1978 in Francesville, he married Patti J. Rife, who survives.
Steven was a member of the Winamac Moose Lodge and was employed at the Braun Corporation for 13 years. He enjoyed fishing and hunting for arrowheads. He loved playing cards with his friends. He was a loving husband and father and he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Surviving along with his wife are two daughters Shannon [Ben] Wampler, Indianapolis, Sarah Burns, Winamac. One son Jacob Burns, Winamac, a sister Terry Burns, Rensselaer, three brothers, Ralph [Sandy] Burns, Rockville, Mike [Jill] Burns, Crawfordsville, and Jim Burns, Lafayette. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irma Lowry and Jim Burns.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 3 at the Frain Mortuary in Winamac with Orville Rife officiating. Burial took place in McKinley Memorial Gardens in Winamac.

Shadron K. Bassett
January 12, 1971 - October 7, 2005
Deputy Sheriff Shadron K. Bassett, 34, 908 North Agnew St., Winamac, died October 7, 2005 near the intersection of C.R. 300 N. and S.R. 39. He lost control of his patrol car while on an emergency call early Friday morning.
Shadron was born January 12, 1971 in Monticello, and was the son of Ron and Penny Brummett Bassett. On November 9, 2002 in Delphi, he married Shannin M. Whitaker who survives.
He was a Deputy Sheriff with the Pulaski County Sheriff's Department for the past three years and had been a former employee of the Braun Corporation for 10 years.
He was a 1990 graduate of Knox High School and was a graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 2004. He was a member of the Church of the Heartland (formerly known as the Life Center) in Winamac. He enjoyed working on his Mustang. He loved being a husband and father. He was loved by many. He enjoyed police work and was a dedicated police officer.
Survivors, along with his wife Shannin, are a daughter, Madysen I.R. Bassett of Indianapolis; two step-daughters: Dakota L. Heims and Julianna K. Heims, both of Winamac. Also surviving are his parents, Ron [Kathy] Bassett of Monticello, and Penny [Tony] Pigecella of Delphi; paternal grandmother, Nancy Jane Bassett of Malcolm, Neb.; maternal step-grandmother, Janet Pigecella and paternal step-grandmother Yara Blubaugh, both of Monticello; three sisters: Brukentta [Justin] Crichfield of Idaville, and Cynaka [Darren] Carr, and Sharim Pigecella, both of Delphi; two brothers: Matthew Bassett of Monticello, and Nathan [Tasha] Arbuckle of Delphi, and many other loved ones.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at the church of the Heartland in Winamac, with Pastor Heath Hiatt officiating. Burial took place in the McKinley Memorial Gardens in Winamac. Frain Mortuary in Winamac was in charge of arrangements.

Lorraine Ann Jones Kirkley
September 14, 1964 - July 21, 1999
Lorraine Ann Jones Kirkley, 34, of Valparaiso, died July 21, 1999, but her remains were only recently recovered on September 30, 2005. She was the daughter of William Robert and Patricia Ann Friedrich Jones of Kewanna.
On June 25, 1988 in Fulton, she married Robert P. Kirkley, who survives in Mishawaka.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2005 at the Fulton Baptist Temple Church located on Dunn St. in Fulton, with Rev. Terry Campbell, Pastor Bruce Russell, and Pastor David Price officiating. Burial will take place in the Grass Creek Cemetery, near Grass Creek.
Gundrum Funeral Home in Logansport is in charge of arrangements.
