Viola Lee, age 90, a resident of Melbourne, Florida, died Tuesday at Atlantic Shores Nursing Home in Melbourne.
Viola is a former resident of East Main St. in Portland. Funeral services for Viola Lee are pending in the Portland Chapel of the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home.
Viola retired from Kerr Glass in 1979 after working there for 28 ˝ years.
Viola Lee was born on October 7, 1917, in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana the daughter of Davilla and Louisa (Kantner) Rudy. She married Roy Lee on January 1, 1948, who died on November 28, 1986.

Funeral services for Viola Lee were held on Monday, July 7, 2008, at 1 p.m. in the Portland Chapel of the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Huey officiating. Burial followed in the Green Park Cemetery in Portland.
Visitation was held from 11-1 p.m. before the service on Monday in the Portland Chapel of the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home.

Claude G. “Willie” Taylor, age 90, a resident of Pennville, IN, died unexpectedly early Sunday morning in the Jay County Hospital.
He was a retired in 1995 from Daniels Brothers Slaughtering of Pennville, Indiana, where he had worked since 1984. He was also a former employee of Indiana Glass of Dunkirk, Indiana.

Willie Taylor was born October 3, 1918 in Knox Township, Jay County, Indiana, the son of Frank and Mildred (Hiatt) Taylor. He graduated from Pennville High School with the Class of 1938. He served with the 5th Air Force Division of the U. S. Army Air Corp during WWII. He was married May 4, 1953 to Naomi E. Bennett, who survives.

Willie Taylor is survived by his wife, Naomi E. Taylor,Pennville, IN; two daughters, Rita Andrews (husband David), Dunkirk, IN and Gloria Daugherty (husband Robert), Upland, IN; 7 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Claude G. “Willie” Taylor will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Pennville Chapel of the Williamson & Spencer Funeral Home. Pastor Steve Arnold will officiate and burial will follow in the IOOF Twin Hills Cemetery in Pennville, IN. The Pennville American Legion will have charge of military graveside rites.

Age 35, a resident of 4250W 400N, Portland, IN, died of injuries he suffered in an automobile accident early this Thursday morning on Balbec Road West of Highway #1.
He was employed by Custom Graphix of Millville, PA. He graduated from Jay County High School with the Class of 1991. He was a member of the Union Chapel Church of Bryant, IN.

Bernice A. Weigel, age 87, a resident of rural Bryant, died Tuesday at Swiss Village in Berne.
Bernice retired 1986 from Huffy Corporation in Celina, Ohio, after working there for 30 years. She was a member of the St. Mary’s of the Presentation Catholic Church in Geneva where she was active in the Altar Rosary Sodality.

Bernice Weigel was born on October 7, 1921, in Wabash Township, Jay County, the daughter of Perry S. and Fern (Huey) Miller. She attended Jefferson Township School in Adams County. Bernice married John A. Weigel on July 5, 1939, who died on February 2, 1986.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Bernice Weigel will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. in the St. Mary’s of the Presentation Catholic Church in Geneva with Father Bosco Perrera officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s of the Presentation Cemetery in Geneva.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-8 p.m. in the Portland Chapel of the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed towards Northeast Family Hospice or Swiss Village Memorial Fund in Berne. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

James O. Simos, age 77, a resident of his family homestead in rural Redkey, went to be with Jesus, his Lord and Savior, on Monday following a courageous battle with cancer.
He passed away at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.

James was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Korea during the Korean Conflict. He was a former employee of Borg Warner/Warner Gear in Muncie for 42 years, retiring in 1992. He was a faithful member of the 1st Community Baptist Church in Redkey. He was a member of the I.O.F. Foresters and a Life Member of the Ridgeville American Legion Post 507.

James O. Simos was born on April 16, 1931, in Muncie, Indiana, the son of Gus and Idell (Campbell) Simos. He married Loretta M. Hickey on November 12, 1954.

A celebration of life service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in the 1st Community Baptist Church of Redkey. Pastor Justin Simos, grandson of James Simos, will be officiating the service. Burial will follow in the Gardens of Memory Cemetery, north of Muncie, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Ridgeville American Legion Post 507.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. in the Portland Chapel of the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home and 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Memorials may be directed towards the Jay County Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Lois “Katie” Gillum, age 77, a resident of Portland, IN, died early Thursday morning at the Jay County Hospital following a brief illness.
She was a former employee of the Jay Garment Co. of Portland. She had worked there from 1948 to 1972. She then worked at CTS of Berne from 1972 until 1992, and retired from Wal-Mart where she worked from 1995 until 2002.

Lois Gillum was born in Allen Co., IN on December 12, 1930 the daughter of Roy and Martha (Brumbaugh) Craig. She graduated from Bryant High School with the Class of 1948. She was married on January 27, 1951 to Reginald L. Gillum. He died Dec. 26, 1997. Lois Gillum is survived by:

Frances Vivian Patterson Barkdull
Age 94, a resident of Crowne Point Assisted Living in Portland, IN, went to be with the Lord on Thursday afternoon, November 13th, in the Persimmon Ridge Care Facility in Portland where she had been a resident for 9 days.
She was a member of the Pleasant Hill Church located on the Jay/Randolph County Line and had attended the Praise Chapel Church of New Pittsburg. She had served as a high school Sunday school teacher and was a past president and member of the Ladies Aide Society of the church. She was a member and past president of the Pike Township Home Ed Club. She was also a volunteer at Portland Community Care. She retired from Campbell Soup formerly of Saratoga, IN.
Frances Barkdull was born May 31, 1914 in Jay County, IN, the daughter of Oliver and Laura (Collins) Patterson. She was married February 18, 1934 to William F. Barkdull. He died April 12, 1998. She is survived by:

Ruth E. Daniels, age 89, a former longtime resident of rural Penn Township, Jay County, died Sunday at Persimmon Ridge Nursing Home in Portland. Ruth was a former employee of Bickel and Duke Insurance Company in Portland for many years, retiring in 1977.

Ruth Daniels was born on February 2, 1919, in Jay County, Indiana, the daughter of Linnlie and Ida (Cline) Bourne. She married Jospeh A. Daniels on June 1, 1937, who died on November 21, 1991.

Wanda K. LeMaster Morehous, age 84, a resident of rural Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana, died late Monday afternoon at her home following an extended illness.
She was a member of the Clear Creek Congregational Church in Randolph County. She retired in 1990 from Sheller Globe Corp. in Union City where she had worked for 38 years. She was a member of the Jay County Hospital Auxiliary.

Wanda Morehous was born October 3, 1924 in Jay County the daughter of Glenn and Velma (Disher) Peden. She was first married to William A. LeMaster on October 15, 1944. He died October 15, 1978. She was then married in May of 1993 to Walter Morehous. He did in February of 2006. She is survived by:

James A. Fisher, age 49, a resident of Portland, died Tuesday at Ball Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
James A. Fisher was born on May 28, 1959, in Portland, Indiana, the son of Elmer Leon and Helen G. (Laux) Fisher. He graduated from Jay County High School in 1977. He served in the National Guard from 1980 to 1989.

Tracy A. Horton, age 60, a life long resident of 265 E. Lagro St., Pennville, died Monday morning at his home following an apparent heart attack.
Tracy was a former employee of Millwright Fabricators, Inc. Ltd. of Pennville and Commercial Contracting Corp. of Auburn Hills, Michigan. He was a member of the Millwright Local 1029 of Warsaw, Indiana, retiring in 2008.

His memberships include the Moose Lodge of Portland, Bluffton American Legion Post #111, Pennville American Legion Post #482 and the Sons of the American Legion of Pennville.

Tracy Horton was born on June 25, 1948, in Pennville, Indiana, the son of George A. and Chella Beatrice (Thomas) Horton. He graduated from Pennville High School in 1966 and attended Purdue University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Tracy married Kathy Daniels on August 12, 2000.

Woodrow “Woody” Valentine, age 89, a resident at Persimmon Ridge of Portland, IN died Wednesday, December 17, 2008.
Woody was a Farmer in Jefferson Township in Jay County, he was a insurance agent with Farmers Mutual Inc. of Portland, IN and he was a bus driver for over 10 years with Redkey Schools. He was a member of the Center United Methodist Church, the Redkey Masons, The Portland Grange, he was the Trustee of Jefferson Township, He was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash for his work at the Jay County Conservations Club, he was a Past Master of the Indiana State Grange and Past Officer of the National Grange.
Woodrow Valentine was born in Green Township, Jay County, Indiana on June 25, 1919 the Son of Cornelius “C A” and Esther (Geesaman) Valentine. He graduated from Pennville High School in 1936, then he attended the Muncie Business College for a year. He married Rickie Rowles on June 28, 1940.

Lawrence “Larry” M. Smith, age 84, a resident of Portland, died Sunday at Ball Memorial Hospital.
Larry was a former Insurance Agent selling Prudential Insurance for 22 ˝ years from 1965-1987.. He also worked from 1995 until 2003 in maintenance at Bearcreek Farms. He then worked from 2004 until 2007 for Jay Randolph Developmental Services. He was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church and the Portland Kiwanis Club. He also served as a coach for the Jay County Special Olympics. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during WW II serving from 1943-1946. He was a member of the Portland American Legion Post #211.

Larry Smith was born on October 1, 1924, in Marysville, Indiana, the son of W. Forrest and Esther (Amick) Smith. He graduated from Jeffersonville High School in Jeffersonville, Indiana in 1943. He married Sarah D. Eggenspiller on February 12, 1953.

Lester D. Stout, age 70, a former resident of Green Township and a current resident of Miller’s Merry Manor in Dunkirk died Friday at Miller’s Merry Manor in Dunkirk where he had been a resident for 6 years.

Lester was a member of the Portland First Church of the Nazarene. He farmed with his parents in Green Township for many years. He was a former employee of the Jay/Randolph Developmental Center workshop.

Lester Stout was born on December 13, 1937, in Portland, Indiana, the son of Donald A. and Bernice D. (Knoelke) Stout.

John E. Brunson, age 50, a former Springfield, Ohio, resident, and a current resident of 310 E. Walnut St., Portland, died Saturday, November 17, 2007, from an apparent heart attack while hunting in Bearcreek Township.

Orval Vern Walter, age 80, a resident of 4 Sesame St., Portland, died Monday, November 12, 2007, at Jay County Hospital from an apparent heart attack.

Mildred I. Bye, age 85, a resident of 3734 N. 250 W., Portland, died Saturday, November 10, 2007, at Jay County Hospital following an extended illness.

Nova F. Caylor, age 69, a resident of 4831 W. 1000 N., Ridgeville, died Monday, November 5, 2007, on their 52nd wedding anniversary at the Renaissance Rehabilitation Center of Muncie following an extended illness.

Mary L. Shaneyfelt, age 63, a resident of 3053 St. Louis Avenue, Fort Wayne, died Wednesday, October 31, 2007, while visiting her sister’s home in Fort Wayne following an extended illness.
