Martie Hollers

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Martie Kay Hollers, 45, Michigan City, died Thursday (Jan. 9, 2003) at Shands at the University of Florida, Gainesville.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Moring Funeral Home, Melrose, Fla., handled the arrangements.

Ms. Hollers was born in Michigan City and a lifelong resident.

Survivors include her mother, Marietta Cunningham, Michigan City; two sons, Ian Osbone, Interlachen, Fla., and David Howard, Michigan City; one brother, Kevin Kelly, Michigan City; and one sister, Bonnie Kelly, Chicago.

She was preceded in death by her father, Harold Hollers Sr.; and one brother, Larry Myer.

Ms. Hollers worked at Blue Chip Casino.

Kathleen Kermen

LONG BEACH - Kathleen Kermen, 87, Long Beach, died at 8 a.m. Sunday (Jan. 12, 2003) at her home.

The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Notre Dame Catholic Church, with the Rev. Richard Ameling officiating. Burial is in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel.

Mrs. Kermen was born May 22, 1915, in Belfast County Down, Ireland, to John and Florence (Nugent) O'Hara. On Dec. 28, 1937, in Michigan City, she married Robert Kermen, who survives in Long Beach.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Patricia (Roger) Peacock, Oakridge, Tenn., and Maureen "Penny" (Paul) Hairopoulos, Carlsbad, Calif.; one son, Robert (Wendy) Kermen, Michigan City; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Barney O'Hara, Michigan City.

She was preceded in death by one brother, John O'Hara.

Mrs. Kermen was a real-estate agent at Carlson's Real Estate. She was a charter member of Notre Dame Catholic Church and a member of the church's Rosarians, of which she was the second president.

Memorials may be made to Notre Dame School or Marquette High School.

Louise Mundt

UNION PIER, Mich. - Louise A. Mundt, 74, Union Pier, died at 3:35 p.m. EST Sunday (Jan. 12, 2003) at her home.

The funeral is at 11 a.m. EST Thursday at Kerley & Starks-Smith Funeral Home, New Buffalo, Mich., with her son, the Rev. Kenneth Mundt, officiating. Burial is in Pine Grove Cemetery, New Buffalo. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. EST Wednesday at the funeral home.

She was born April 28, 1928, in New Buffalo to Aaron and Opal (Lamport) Schroder. In South Bend, she married Leo Mundt, who preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Charles) McGinnis, South Bend, and Mary (Ed) Raz-Smith, California; four sons, Phillip (Patty) Mundt, Lakeworth, Fla., the Rev. Kenneth (Pat) Mundt, Three Oaks, Mich., Gregory (Pat) Mundt, Walkerton, Ind., and Mark (Theresa) Mundt, Lowell, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Schuler, New Buffalo; three sisters-in-law, Carrie (Alvin) Veverka, Hartford, Mich., Mary Mundt, Watervliet, Mich., and Veronica Shroder, New Buffalo; and close lifelong friend, Jenny Florer, New Buffalo.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Arvilla, Ethel, Jennifer, Myrtle and Bernice; and four brothers, Louis, John, Charles and Phillip.

Mrs. Mundt was a homemaker and bookkeeper at Gerber Babywear. Prior to that, she was a switchboard operator for the former New Buffalo Telephone Co.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Thomas Black

Thomas J. Black, 64, Michigan City, died at 7:55 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 11, 2003) at Carroll Woods Health & Rehabilitation Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday, at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church. Cremation has taken place and burial will be at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Root Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Mr. Black was born March 27, 1938, in Michigan City to Marion and Sophie (Golumbeck) Black.

Survivors include three sisters, Patricia (Edward) Schultz, Betty (Robert) Powers, and Jane A. Arndt, all of Michigan City; and one brother, Richard (Cecilia) Black, Sarasota, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Robert Black.

Mr. Black was in the Army from Oct. 21, 1961, to Jan. 24, 1967, and attained the rank of Staff Sgt., and served in Vietnam.

He was a retired Realtor and had owned Realty One in Michigan City, and worked for Cressy and Everett and Century 21. He worked for more than 24 years as Production Manager at Kingsley Furniture, LaPorte. He worked as a security shift supervisor for Blue Chip. He was a member of St. Joseph Young Men's Society, Skwiat American Legion Post 451, the FOP, Fish and Game Club and AARP.

Memorials may be made to Marquette High School or the Michiana Humane Society.

Rosalea Lane

Rosalea "Rosie" Lane, 73, Michigan City, died at 5:08 p.m. Monday (Jan. 13, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, at Carlisle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Michael L. Wands officiating. Entombment will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and from 10 a.m. until the service Friday at the funeral home.

She was born March 10, 1929, in Dillon, S.C., to Stafford and Nettie (Jackson) Lee. On Dec. 29, 1945, in Dillon, she married John C. Lane, who died in 1988.

Survivors include two daughters, Audrey (Jim) Foran, and Tamara (Roy) Tidwell, both of Michigan City; two sons, Dennis Lane and Christopher (Rebecca) Lane, both of Michigan City; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harvey Lee, Michigan City, and Laphon (Lib) Lee, Dillon; and one sister, Kathleen (Jim) Spires, Cordele, Ga.

Also preceding Mrs. Lane in death were one son, Ronald Lane; one daughter, Ann Lane; four sisters; and one brother.

Mrs. Lane was a homemaker. She formerly had worked at Red Oaks Nursing Home for more than 10 years in the housekeeping department. She also was a former member of the Michigan City Moose Lodge.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church.

Leo Marciniak

GARY, Ind. - Leo T. Marciniak, 82, Gary, formerly of East Chicago, died Tuesday (Jan. 13, 2003) in Saint Mary Medical Center, Hobart, Ind.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1775 W. 41st Ave., Gary, with the Rev. Chris Bugno officiating. Prayers will be at 9:15 a.m. at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Road, Hobart, prior to Mass at the church. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m., with the Rosary recited at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.

He was born to John and Victoria Marciniak and moved to Gary in 1948.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lucille; one son, Marty (Wendy) Marciniak, Chesterton; one daughter, Rosemary (Thomas) Martin, Valparaiso; three sisters, Jean Tomenko and Jane Johnson, both of Michigan City, and Laverne Bango, South Bend; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Also preceding Mr. Marciniak in death were four brothers, Joseph, Walter, Michael and John Marciniak; and two sisters, Florence Sturzig and Sister Regina of the Felician Order.

Mr. Marciniak retired from GATX in East Chicago, where he worked as a crane operator. He was an Army Air Corps veteran, serving during World War II. Mr. Marciniak was a member of Blessed Sacrament of Gary. He also was a member of the American Legion Post 289.

Mr. Marciniak will be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Genevieve Otlewski

Genevieve "Jean" Otlewski, 96, Michigan City, died at 6:55 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 12, 2003) at Michigan City Healthcare Center.

There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place and the ashes will be interred privately in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. A memorial mass will be said at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. James McGrogan officiating.

Mrs. Otlewski was born Sept. 30, 1906, in Michigan City, to Sam and Eva (Tanber) Faroh. She married Louis "Bebe" Otlewski, on July 24, 1942, in Mineral Wells, Texas. He died on Feb. 2, 1983.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mrs. Otlewski also was preceded in death by two sisters; and five brothers.

She was a homemaker.

Memorials may be made to the Share Foundation for the Handicapped, in care of the Rev. Dennis Blaney.

Benedict Wiewiora

Benedict Edward Wiewiora, 80, Michigan City, died at 12:30 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 12, 2003) at Life Care Center of Michigan City.

The Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Queen of All Saints Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael J. Yadron officiating. Skwiat American Legion Post 451 will conduct military rites after the Mass at the church. There will be no visitation. Cremation will take place. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

He was born July 14, 1922, in Chicago, to Edward and Mary (Pas) Wiewiora. On May 2, 1942, he married Lorraine P. Selecky who died July 13, 1996.

Survivors include one grandson, Ronald C. Pagano, LaPorte; two granddaughters, Paula M. Murphy, Abilene, Texas, and Kimberly Ann Pagano, Hearne, Texas; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Emily Sikora, Chicago.

Also preceding Mr. Wiewiora in death were one sister; and his son, Benedict R. Wiewiora.

Mr. Wiewiora was a retired machinist for airlines, working on projects such as building and designing engines for the Spruce Goose and helping with the assembly of rockets. He was in the Army Air Corps from Dec. 5, 1943, to Nov. 7, 1945, during World War II, and attained the rank of corporal. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 1542 and was a third degree Knight. Mr. Wiewiora also belonged to the Skwiat American Legion Post 451.

Memorial contributions may be made to Queen of All Saints Catholic Church.

Mary Williamson

WALKERTON, Ind. - Mary R. Williamson, 94, Walkerton, formerly of South Bend, died at 7 p.m. Monday, (Jan. 13, 2003) in Millers Merry Manor.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, in Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., South Bend, with the Rev. Earl Rynearson officiating. Entombment will be in Highland Cemetery Mausoleum.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service Friday at the funeral home.

She was born Oct. 17, 1908, in Chicago, to William and Leticia (Barlowe) Ragsdale. On Dec. 7, 1937, in Michigan City, she married Lawrence H. Williamson, who survives. Mr. and Mrs. Williamson recently had their 65th wedding anniversary.

Survivors also include three daughters, Jean (Gerhardt) Lightfuss, Rockford, Ill., Carol Lachmund, Brementon, Wash., and Linda (Hank) Marshman, South Bend; one son, Lee Hauser, Beckley, W.V.; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Zelda Leser, Michigan City.

Also preceding Mrs. Williamson in death were one son-in-law, Ronald Lachmund; and daughter-in-law Sylvia Hauser.

Mrs. Williamson was an executive secretary for the former Hays Corp. in Michigan City, which was an engineering firm. She was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

James Wozniak

LaPORTE - James L. Wozniak, 74, LaPorte, died at 3:50 p.m. Monday (Jan. 13, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Yadron officiating. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the service Thursday, in the funeral chapel.

He was born Feb. 20, 1928, in Michigan City, to Leonard and Florence (Eisele) Wozniak. On Oct. 23, 1948, in Michigan City, he married Phyllis Batzel who survives.

Survivors also include three daughters, Patricia (Calvin) Buell and Cheryl Wozniak, both of Michigan City, and Kathy Spiess, Hicksville, Ohio; two sons, Larry Wozniak, Michigan City, and Ronald (Jennifer) Wozniak, LaPorte; six sisters, Barbara Dohner, New Buffalo, Mich., Mary Jones, Rolling Prairie, Theresa Wozniak, Evelyn "Evie" Grieger, Carol (Richard) Landis and Dorothy Moffitt, all of Michigan City; one brother, Richard (Alice) Wozniak, Trail Creek; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Also preceding Mr. Wozniak in death were two sisters, Florence Fredenburg and Diana Sue Wozniak; and two brothers, Donald and Philip Wozniak.

Mr. Wozniak retired in 1989 after 35 years as a truck driver for Woodruff and Sons in Michigan City. He also worked for Sullair Corp. as an assembler. He was a life member of the Michigan City Saddle Club and was past captain of the LaPorte County Sheriff's Mounted Posse. He served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Springfield Township Volunteer Fire Department.

Teresa Brown

SOUTH PASADENA, Calif. - Teresa Brown, 94, formerly of Michigan City, died Monday (Jan. 13, 2003) in California.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church in South Pasadena. Burial will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Montebello, Calif.

Mrs. Brown was born July 28, 1908, in Michigan City, to August and Martha Keiffer.

Survivors include three children, Bob (Rita) Brown, Bill (Sue) Brown, and Judy (Ralph) Lloyd; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Andena Thompson and Alyce Hansen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Clarence and Lawrence Kieffer; and two sisters, Loretta Kieffer Gustafson and Carolyn Kieffer.

Mrs. Brown had lived in South Pasadena for 57 years. She loved to travel and was active with the South Pasadena Senior Center.

Sophie Luce

Sophie E. Luce, 84, Michigan City, died Tuesday (Jan. 14, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10 a.m. Friday at Queen of All Saints Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Yadron officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Lansing, Mich.

There will be no visitation. Arrangements were handled by Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel.

Mrs. Luce was born Nov. 12, 1918, in Lansing, to Joseph and Leocadia (Blachnia) Pazieski.

Survivors include one nephew, Andrew (Kristi) Paull, Michigan City; one niece, Kathy (Gary) Fouts, Michigan City; four great nephews; one great niece; one sister-in-law, Margery Paull, Michigan City; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Lottie Jarrett; and one brother, Stanley Paull.

Mrs. Luce was a secretary for an insurance company in Lansing until she retired.

She was member of Queen of All Saints Catholic Church, the Rosary Society of Queen of All Saints Church and a member of the Holy Name Sodality.

Memorials may be made to Children's International in care of James Cook for: Madelyn Dela Cruz, P.O. Box 419055, Kansas City, Mo. 64141, Queen of All Saints Cub Scouts or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Albert Plochl

LaPORTE - Albert S. Plochl, 77, LaPorte, died Thursday (Jan. 16, 2003) at his home.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Newhard Funeral Home, Westville, with Father Joseph Pusateri officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Otis.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

He was born Jan. 27, 1925, to Matthew and Anna (Heiden) Plochl. In February of 1947, he married Mary K. Dempsey, who survives.

Survivors also include two daughters, Kathleen (Carl) M. Pahler, Chicago Heights, Ill., and Albertine A. Plochl, Wanatah; two grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Margaret Plochl, Orland Park, Ill.; one brother, Robert Plochl, Chicago; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Robert Thielmann.

Also preceding Mr. Plochl in death were two brothers, Matthew and John Plochl.

Mr. Plochl retired from St. Regis/Ivex Paper Company after 38 years. He was a veteran of World War II where he was awarded the Purple Heart. Mr. Plochl was past commander of the J. Hamm Lewis VFW Post 2705 in Chicago.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Premier Hospice of LaPorte, 111 Longwood Dr., Suite B, LaPorte, IN 46350.

Jody Cross

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Jody Lynn Cross, 41, formerly of Lakeside, Mich., died Thursday (Jan. 30, 2003) of cancer.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. EST Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2700 E. Fulton, Grand Rapids, with the Rev. Paul Krupinski officiating.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.

Mrs. Cross was born March 1, 1961, in Marquette, Mich., to Paul and Lorraine (LaFave) Hester.

Survivors include her husband, Terrence, Grand Rapids; four children, Jared Lee, Tyler James, Colton Scott and Maddison Lynn, all of Grand Rapids; her mother, Lorraine Hester, Port Charlotte, Fla.; two sisters, Darlene (Richard) Boase, Winter Haven, Fla., and Carol (William) Vanderslice, Port Charlotte; several nieces and nephews; and many close friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Hester; and two brothers, William Kokkila and Paul Hester.

Mrs. Cross graduated with honors from Grand Valley State University in 1983 and worked for several companies including Steelcase. For the past 10 years she was with Quantum Service as a trainer for human resource personnel.

A people person, Mrs. Cross loved her Lord and served his church faithfully as a Sunday School teacher, and was active with Bible study and prayer groups. She centered herself in the love of her family. She was involved with coordinating the family, school and sporting events for her children. Her quiet times were spent reading her Bible, a good romance novel and working in her flower garden.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Lois Burnham

WANATAH, Ind. - Lois C. Burnham, 71, died Thursday (Jan. 30, 2003) at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso, Ind.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. CST Monday at Davis Wesleyan Church, Hamlet, Ind., with Pastor Steven Cunnington officiating. Burial will follow at Hanna Cemetery, Hanna, Ind.

Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. CST Sunday at Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel, and from 10 a.m. until the service Monday at the church.

Mrs. Burnham was born April 8, 1931, in Lincoln Township in LaPorte County to Harry and Edna (Coil) Saylor. On June 23, 1951, in Hamlet, she married Dale Burnham, who survives.

Survivors also include two daughters, Susan (Terry) Garner, Hanna, and Nancy (Kevin) Redweik, North Judson, Ind.; two sons, Gary (Connie) Burnham, Michigan City, and Roger Burnham, Hanna; three sisters, Alida (John) Gouker, North Liberty, Ind., Amelia (Don) Myers, North Judson, and Vialetta (Robert) Mueller, Hamlet; one brother, Eurrat (Carolyn) Saylor, Grovertown, Ind.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Tibbs and Francis Saylor.

Mrs. Burnham was a homemaker. She also was a member of Davis Wesleyan Church of Hamlet, where she was a Sunday School teacher, a trustee of the church and a member of the Missionary Society of the church. She also was a member of the Home Economics Club of Clinton Township and was a 4-H leader in Clinton Township in LaPorte County. She was a member of Helping Hand Club of Clinton Township. She also helped with Meals on Wheels in the Hanna area and the Community Pantry of Southern LaPorte County.

Memorials may be made to Davis Wesleyan Church of Hamlet.
