Fannie Hicks

Fannie S. Hicks, 45, Michigan City, died at 8:03 a.m. Friday (May 30, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.

The funeral is at noon Wednesday at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, with Deacon Steve Ray officiating. Burial is in Greenwood Cemetery. There is no visitation. Coleman-Williams & Hicks Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Mrs. Hicks was born Feb. 18, 1958, in Cotton Plant, Ark., to Samuel Sr. and Lucy (Doss) Stalling. Her mother survives. On Oct. 3, 1987, she married Robert Hicks in Michigan City, who survives.

Survivors include one son, David Jones Jr., Michigan City; two daughters, Mattie Stalling, Michigan City, and Tammy Stalling, Nashville; three sons, Samuel (Shirley) Stalling Jr., South Bend, Marion Stalling Sr. and Sanders (Felicia) Stalling Sr., both of Michigan City; two sisters, Virginia Thornton and Martha (Steve) Ray, Michigan City; a special niece, Barbara Jenkins, South Bend; five grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other friends.

She was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.

A homemaker, Mrs. Hicks moved to Michigan City 35 years ago from Cotton Plant.

Melvin Fenske

Melvin H. Fenske, 82, Michigan City, died Friday (May 30, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.

Cremation will take place. There will be no viewing. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Burial will follow cremation in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date. Root Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Fenske was born October 5, 1920, in Michigan City, to Lester G. and Lillian A. (Housman) Fenske. His parents are preceding.

Survivors include two sisters, Dorothy Thode and Irene (Russell) Hahn, both of Michigan City; and several nieces and nephews.

One brother, Robert "Bob" Fenske, preceded him in death.

Mr. Fenske was a retired machinist from Joy Manufacturing.

Mr. Fenske enjoyed volunteering at Elston High School in the Auto Shop and volunteering in the office. Mr. Fenske was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army. He was a member of Skwiat American Legion Post 451, associate member of the F.O.P., Sheriff's Association and Saint Luke's United Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be made to Saint Luke's United Lutheran Church.

Joan Olesker

CHICAGO - Joan Olesker, 88, died Saturday (May 31, 2003) in Chicago. She was a resident of Chicago but spent some summers in the Michigan City area.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ita Church, 1220 W. Catalpa St., Chicago. Interment will be in a family plot in Chicago.

No visitation is scheduled. The Piser Chapel, 5206 N. Broadway, Chicago, is in charge of arrangements.

Surviving are two sons, Tom Jr. (Sara) Olesker and Jack (Kim) Olesker; and four grandchildren, Betsy, Peter (Rachel), Alexander and Zoe; as well as nieces, nephews and friends.

Tom Olesker, her husband of 64 years, preceded her in death. Two sisters, Mary and Irene, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Olesker, a businesswoman, helped found Tom Olesker Fashions with her husband. She was an avid golfer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Mark Schumacher

Mark G. Schumacher, 51, Michigan City, died May 9, 2003, at his home.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Root Funeral Home, with the Reverend Michael J. Yadron officiating. Burial of the cremains will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Schumacher was born May 24, 1951, in Michigan City, to Hans and Bernadette (Mausbach) Schumacher. His parents preceded him in death.

Survivors include one sister, Sherry (Mike) Turner, of Hernando, Fla.

Mr. Schumacher was a route delivery person for The News-Dispatch.

Bobbie Bedwell

LaPORTE - Bobbie L. Bedwell, 72, LaPorte, died Monday (May 26, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. today at the Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with Brother Gordon Wonsey officiating. Burial will be Friday in Bethany Cemetery, Carlisle, Ind.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until the service today at the funeral home.

Mr. Bedwell was born Nov. 12, 1930, in Paxton, Ind., to Emmons and Odessa (Perkins) Bedwell. On May 19, 1949, in LaPorte, he married Doris Boone, who survives in LaPorte.

Survivors include two sons, Darin (Lisa) Bedwell, LaPorte, and Roger (Debra) Bedwell, Noblesville, Ind.; two grandsons, Seth and Tyler Bedwell, LaPorte; two sisters, Ina Fields, Linton, and Ann Hostetler, LaPorte; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Judy Darlene Bedwell; one son, Dennis Ray Bedwell; four brothers, Joe, Earl, Floyd and Loren; and two sisters, Lilly and Ruby.

Mr. Bedwell retired in 1990 after 32 years at Tonn & Blank of Michigan City. Before working for Tonn & Blank he worked at Allis Chalmers Corp.

He was a member of Shady Lane Church of Christ in Michigan City and of Teamsters Local 135.

William Downey

LaPORTE - William J. Downey, 79, LaPorte, died at 2:30 a.m. Monday, (May 26, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, LaPorte, with the Rev. Doug Hadley officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery with full military services.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Essling Funeral Home, and from 9 a.m. until the service Thursday at the church.

He was born Jan. 19, 1924, in Chicago, to Lester and Ruth (Hug) Downey. On Sept. 22, 1951, in Chicago, he married Ida Jane Donnell, who died May 16, 2001.

Survivors include one son, Michael W. Downey, LaPorte; three granddaughters; companion Lois Thomas, LaPorte; and one niece and one nephew.

Also preceding Mr. Downey in death was one sister, Charlotte Hanson.

Mr. Downey was president and co-owner with his son of Casteel Service Inc. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. A member of First United Methodist Church, Mr. Downey served on the Missions Commission for the church. He was a member of the American Foundrymen's Society and the National Model Railroad Association, and was a past member of the American Metal Makers Guild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church.

Marjorie Kepcha

LaPORTE - Marjorie J. Kepcha, 80, LaPorte, died at 10:28 p.m. Monday (May 26, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital, LaPorte.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Haverstock Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kent Dale officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and from 8 a.m. until the service Friday at Haverstock Funeral Home.

She was born Dec. 19, 1922, in Porter County, to Lewis and Helena (Weinrich) Esslinger. On Oct. 12, 1946, in LaPorte, she married Darwin L. Kepcha, who died Feb. 22, 1990.

Survivors include one daughter, Judy (Bill) A. Zila, LaPorte; two sisters, Virginia Foor, LaPorte, and Lois Wright, Hanna, Ind.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Also preceding Mrs. Kepcha in death were one sister, Dorothy Heminger; and one brother, Melvin Esslinger.

Mrs. Kepcha lived most of her life in the LaPorte area. She was a housewife.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Association or to the American Heart Fund.

Matthew Bankowski

Matthew F. Bankowski, 84, Michigan City, died Wednesday (May 28, 2003) at his home in Michigan City.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church, with the Rev. Dennis Blaney officiating. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Root Funeral Home. A wake service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Bankowski was born Jan. 2, 1919, in Michigan City, to Vincent and Helen (Zawacki) Bankowski. On Oct. 26, 1949, in Michigan City, he married Martha Pizarek, who survives in Michigan City.

Survivors include two sons, Michael (Lou Ann) Bankowski, Michigan City and Matthew (Denise) Bankowski, Hudson, Wis.; three grandchildren, Heather Bankowski, Phoenix, Tom Bankowski, Austin, Texas, and Katie Bankowski, Michigan City; four sisters, Marie Jakelski, Lorraine Jarka, Adeline (Dan) Williams and Gloria Wilson, all of Michigan City; special brother-in-law, Jerome Pizarek; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Mr. Bankowski in death is one sister, Leona Sobecki.

Mr. Bankowski retired from Jaymar-Ruby as a pressing machine operator after 64 years of service. A member of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church, Mr. Bankowski served as an usher for the church. He belonged to the St. Joseph Young Men's Society, Polish Business and Professional Club and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Mr. Bankowski served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Memorials maybe made to the Share Foundation for the Handicapped.

Durmon Butler Sr.

The Rev. Durmon Z. Butler Sr., 79, Michigan City, died Friday (May 23, 2003) at his home.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater Powerhouse C.O.G.I.C., 428 N. Woodland Ave., with Bishop Milton L. Hall officiating. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. and the wake will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Pentecostal C.O.G.I.C., Hobart and East Eighth streets.

He was born Nov. 11, 1923, in Mississippi, to Joseph and Maggie (Robinson) Butler. On July 5, 1942, in Carruthersville, Mo., he married Lula P. Mack, who survives in Michigan City.

Also surviving are four sons, Durmon (Penny) Butler Jr., Michigan City, Benjamin Lewis, Nashville, Tenn., Charles Lewis, South Bend, and Bruce Lewis, Denver; two daughters, Vicki Lewis Leonard, South Bend, and Donna Lewis, Michigan City; one brother, Earmon Butler, Chicago; 20 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 42 nieces and nephews; special friends, Jessie Edmonds, Bobbie White and Beatrice Simpson-Perry, all of Michigan City; and a host of church family members and friends.

Also preceding the Rev. Butler in death were one brother, two sisters and four sons.

The Rev. Butler worked at Pullman Standard as a Painter and later became owner/operator of D&Z Sons Auto Repair in Michigan City.

He moved to Michigan City in 1959, coming from South Bend. He has been pastor of Pentecostal C.O.G.I.C. in Michigan City for 39 years.

Eva Edwards

KINGSFORD HEIGHTS - Eva M. Edwards, 58, Kingsford Heights, died at 2:11 a.m. Monday (May 26, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ, Kingsford Heights, with Bishop E. Bobby Warren officiating. Burial will be in Patton Cemetery, LaPorte.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and from noon until the service Saturday at the church. Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, handled arrangements.

She was born Nov. 14, 1944, in Decatur, Miss., to Ben and Jarille (Russell) Temple. They both preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Chiffon Edwards and Tina Russell, both of Kingsford Heights; two sisters, Janel Campbell and Ethel B. Donald, both of Decatur, Miss.; four brothers, Eddie O'Dell and Edward O'Dell, both of Shreveport, La., Jimmy Russell, Decatur, Miss., and Willie Temple, Moss Point, Miss.; grandson, Java' Russell, Kingsford Heights; three goddaughters and one godson.

Mrs. Edwards was a production operator for Hedwin. A member of New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ, Mrs. Edwards served as a church mother and helped with the food bank. She was on the benevolence committee, instructed the Kid's Academy, worked hospitality and was a member of the Pastor's Aid Committee.

Memorial contributions may be made to New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ of Kingsford Heights.

Clarence Schreiber

LaPORTE - Clarence W. "Red" Schreiber, 76, LaPorte, died Monday (May 26, 2003) at his home.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Ted Nordquist officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, LaPorte. The LaPorte American Legion Post 83 will conduct a military service at the cemetery.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, and from 9 a.m. Saturday until the service at the funeral home. A vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Schreiber was born May 4, 1927, in LaPorte, to Henry and Mary (Ott) Schreiber. On June 16, 1951, in LaPorte, he married Rose Marie Ellenwine, who died Oct. 16, 1996.

Survivors include two daughters, Julene M. Haeussler, Bartlett, Ill., and Deborah Witt, Lawton, Okla.; one son, David Schreiber, Las Vegas, Nev.; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Schreiber was a veteran of World War II and a member of the LaPorte American Legion Post 83.

He retired from Sears Roebuck & Co. in 1989 after 30 years as a service technician.

Frank Talesky

LaPORTE - Frank Talesky, 63, LaPorte, died at 6:20 p.m. Thursday (May 22, 2003) at his home.

A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Maple City Square Apartments, 1204 Andrew Ave. Cutler Funeral Home handled arrangements.

He was born Nov. 18, 1939, in Chicago, to Frank S. and Josephine (Dombrosky) Talesky.

Survivors include his mother; three daughters, Dee Dee Talesky, Tara (Adam) Bridegroom and Tori Talesky; four sons, Frank Talesky, Mark (Kim) Talesky, Franklin Talesky and Joshua (Michelle) Talesky; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one aunt, Mary Wertin; several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews; and special friends, Chuck Maslan and Becky McCarthy.

His father preceded him in death.

Mr. Talesky was an expert martial artist for most of his life, receiving his 10th degree later in his life. He also was involved with the Professional Karate Commission.
