Harold Hollers Jr.

TUCSON, Ariz. - Harold "Buddy" Lee Hollers Jr., 54, Tucson, died Tuesday (June 17, 2003) in Tucson.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Southern Arizona Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Sierra Vista, Ariz. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at East Lawn Palms Mortuary, Tucson.

He was born Sept. 29, 1948, in Michigan City.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta; his mother, Earlene Cassidy; one son, Marc; one daughter, Alissha; one stepson, Bill; one brother, Richard T. (Judy) Hollers, LaPorte; and his in-laws Bruce and Henrietta Linan.

Preceding Mr. Hollers in death were his father, Harold "Bud" Hollers Sr.; his stepfather Robert Cassidy; paternal grandparents Ralph Hollers, Fern Duncan, and Howard and Esma "Ma" Burlison.

Mr. Hollers graduated from Elston High School in 1966. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Pollack and was a Vietnam veteran.

Vera Probst

LaPORTE - Vera I. Probst, 82, LaPorte, died at 11:45 a.m. Thursday (June 19, 2003) at her home.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Haverstock Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Patton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. until the service Monday at the funeral home.

She was born Dec. 1, 1920, in Union Mills, Ind., to Russell and Georgia (Bales) Reeves. On April 26, 1943, in Hampton, Va., she married Vern Probst, who died May 29, 2003.

Survivors include her daughter, Lou Ann Shoue, LaPorte; two sisters, Alice Keehn, Rolling Prairie, and Nina Sampson, LaPorte; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Also preceding Mrs. Probst in death were one son, Edwin Probst; one brother, Lee Reeves; one sister, Velma Mickelson; and one great-granddaughter, Madison.'

Mrs. Probst was a lifelong resident of LaPorte. She was a housewife and a member of Faith Community Church of LaPorte.

Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Community Church.

Robert Barr

Robert H. Barr, 67, Michigan City, died at 9 a.m. Friday (June 20, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. until the service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Barr was born Oct. 9, 1935, in Michigan City, the son of Harold and Jeanetta (Hahn) Barr, who are deceased.

Surviving are three daughters, Suzanne Barr-Allamong, Renie (Jonathan Manigold) Barr-Behrendt and Peggy Childress, all of Michigan City; one son, Lawrance (Kerry) Skibo, Napierville, Ill.; seven grandchildren; one sister, Sally Hooper, Michigan City; and his best friend, Joyce Barr, Michigan City.

Mr. Barr was a member of I.B.E.W. Local 531. He was involved in Michigan City's lakefront community. He formerly owned B&B Amusement Service, the former Oasis Bar, the Tunnel of Fun, Marquette Mall and Ye Old Records. He also owned an amusement park at Lake Eliza and the Jack & Jill Amusement Park, Fort Wayne. Mr. Barr enjoyed his family and was a trap and skeet shooter.

Memorials may be made to the Open Door Health Center or to Share Foundation for the Handicapped.

Allen Buckman

NEW CARLISLE, Ind. - Allen H. Buckman, 87, New Carlisle, died at 3:45 p.m. Thursday (June 19, 2003) at Hamilton Grove Retirement Community, New Carlisle.

The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Douglas Hadley officiating. Burial will follow in Patton Cemetery, LaPorte.

Visitation is from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, and Monday from noon until the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Buckman was born Aug. 29, 1915, in Hartford, Mich., to Raymond and Marjorie (Smith) Buckman. On March 23, 1950, in Michigan City, he married Myrtle M. Bailey, who died August 25, 1991.

Survivors include three sons, Allen H. Buckman Jr., and William F. Buckman, both of LaPorte, and Norman L. Buckman, Vandalia, Mich.; two daughters, Donna Kish, Valparaiso, and Joan Poort, DeMotte, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

Mr. Buckman had been a self-employed refrigeration technician before he retired.

He was a member of the LaPorte Masonic Lodge.

Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph County Hospice.

Rowena Hargrave

BOXFORD. Mass. - Rowena Hargrave, 96, Boxford, formerly of LaPorte, died Thursday (June 19, 2003) at her home.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, with Dr. Howard Abbott and the Rev. Dr. Ruth Bersin officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Lake Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, and from 9 a.m. until the service Tuesday at the funeral home

Mrs. Hargrave was born Dec. 12, 1906, in Boonville, Ind., to Little Berry and Anna Laura (Stephens) Hullett. On June 4, 1935, in LaPorte, she married Jacob Harold Hargrave, who died Sept. 29, 1985.

Survivors include one daughter, the Rev. Dr. Ruth (Richard L.) Bersin, Boxford, Mass.; one granddaughter, Rebekah Bersin, Boxford; one grandson, Jacob Bersin, Boxford; two great-grandchildren, Alana and Giovanni Contreras; and one niece, Marilyn Fisher, Evansville, Ind.

Mrs. Hargrave was a longtime resident of LaPorte and was a remedial teacher for LaPorte Schools for many years until her retirement.

She received her primary education in the Boonville school system, her bachelor of science degree from Indiana University and a master's degree in education at the University of Chicago.

Mrs. Hargrave was the author of the "Building Reading Skills" series and a member of the American Association of University Women, the American Children's Education Society, the Phi Lambda Theta Society, the National Education Association, the Elementary Education Association, the International Reading Association, the Indiana State Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Civic Music Association, the Woman's Literary Club, the LaPorte Hospital Auxiliary, the Little Theatre Club and a long-time member of the LaPorte First Baptist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hargrave Scholarship at LaPorte High School.

Sharon Parish

Sharon K. Parish, 57, Michigan City, died at 3:11 p.m. Thursday (June 19, 2003) at Community Hospital in Munster, Ind.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Root Funeral Home, with the Rev. Victoria Smith officiating. Cremation will follow. Burial of the cremains will be at later date in Pine Grove Cemetery, New Buffalo, Mich.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. until the service Monday at the funeral home.

She was born Jan. 7, 1946, in Joliet, Ill., to John and Doris Quantrell Carpenter, who preceded her in death. On Feb. 24, 1962, in Michigan City, she married Albert J. "John" Parish, who survives in Michigan City.

Also surviving are three daughters, Connie (Mark) Sherrick, LaPorte, Bonnie (Scot) Hunt, Michigan City, and Shari Comer, Mishawaka, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Judy (Jack) Litke, Rolling Prairie.

Also preceding her in death was one brother.

Mrs. Parish was a retired salesperson for Sears after 22 years of service. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Women of the Moose Chapter 935 and John Franklin Miller American Legion Post 37 Auxillary. Mrs. Parish was an avid bingo player and dearly loved her grandchildren and family.

Brenda Brummett

LaPORTE - Brenda Gail Brummett, 51, LaPorte, died 3:05 a.m. Saturday (June 21, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Carlisle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis Pickens officiating. Burial will take place in Pine Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Brummett was born April 11, 1952, in McMinniville, Tenn., to Garland and Valton (Phillips) Vincent. Both preceded her in death. On April 27, 1968, in Michigan City, she married Cisco Brummett, who survives in LaPorte.

Survivors also include two daughters, Ann (Steve) Alt and Jennifer (Jon) Gouge, both of Michigan City; one son, Brian (Trisha) Brummett, Syracuse, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Erich Alt, Ethan Alt, Paige Gasaway, Parker Gouge, and Brian Brummett Jr.; two sisters, Debbie (Bob) Richards, Milton, Wash., and Judy Vincent, Pacifa, Wash.; and two brothers, Phillip (Inya) Vincent, Qatar, and Ronnie Vincent, Milton, Wash.

Mrs. Brummett was a homemaker. She dedicated her life toward her husband, children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Brummett was an outdoor enthusiast. She enjoyed camping, swimming, reading and gardening. She also raised cockatile birds. Her favorite hobby was to travel and ride motorcycles with her husband.

Memorial contributions may be made to Full Gospel House of Prayer or the American Cancer Society.

Esther Birdsong

LaPORTE - Esther M. Birdsong, 79, LaPorte, died at 4:30 p.m. Sunday (June 22, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.

A private family service was held at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, with Pastor Steven Laue officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery, LaPorte.

Mrs. Birdsong was born March 3, 1924, in Valparaiso to Lawrence and Madge (Williams) Caprous. On Aug. 24, 1951, in Valparaiso, she married Hamer W. Birdsong, who died Sept. 11, 1978.

Survivors include two sons, Rolland (Jackie) Hardesty and Kevin Birdsong, both of LaPorte; three grandsons, Douglas D. Hardesty, LaPorte, Richard K. Hardesty, Fishers, Ind., and Scott (Carol) Hardesty, Holland, Ohio; two great-granddaughters, Bailey Hardesty, LaPorte, and Alison Hardesty, Holland; one great-grandson, Scott Hardesty Jr., Holland; one sister, Nettie Schmidt, LaPorte; one brother, Henry Caprous, Valparaiso; and her loving companion, Don McGhee, LaPorte.

Mrs. Birdsong retired in 1986 from the LaPorte County Library. She was a member of the Retired Librarians Club and active in the Hoosier Boys Club.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, LaPorte Chapter, LaPorte Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 250, LaPorte, IN 46350.

John Nieman

John A. Nieman, 63, Michigan City, died at noon Friday (June 20, 2003) at the University of Chicago Hospital in Chicago.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Root Funeral Home with the Rev. Brian D. Chadwick officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Root Funeral Home.

Mr. Nieman was born Jan. 22, 1940, in Michigan City to Henry and Virginia (Joers) Nieman. On Oct. 18, 1958, in Michigan City, he married Darlene Ann Burdick, who survives in Michigan City.

Also surviving are two daughters; Terri L. Nieman, Plainfield, Ind., and Anna (Jeff) Gondeck of Michigan City; two sons, Dale Nieman and Scott (Janice) Nieman, both of Michigan City; five grandchildren, Tonya Hatchell, Anthony Hatchell, Tina Nieman, Brett Nieman and Amber Nieman; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Audrey Nieman, Michigan City; and former daughter-in-law Sherry Nieman, Monticello, Ind.

He was preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters.

Mr. Nieman was a correctional officer with Westville Correctional Center for more than 14 years.

Mr. Nieman's fellow officers will provide a honor guard during viewing and services.

Memorials maybe made to the Ronald McDonald House in Chicago.

Evalyn Phlugshaupt

Evalyn B. Phlugshaupt, 90, LaPorte, died at 4:35 p.m. Sunday (June 22, 2003) at Countryside Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in LaPorte.

A private family service will be held at a later time in Pine Lake Cemetery. Burial will take place in Pine Lake Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Mrs. Phlugshaupt was born Jan. 23, 1913, in Monticello, Ind., to Charles and Emma Rhoades.

Survivors include one daughter, Donna (David) Reed, LaPorte; one son, Darwin Spurling, Chicago; one granddaughter, Jill (Richard) Reed; and one great-granddaughter, Molly.

She was preceded in death by one son, Darrell Spurling.

Mrs. Phlugshaupt worked at Fox's Woolen Mills, Plimpton Press and Scott Foresman Co. in LaPorte.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Julia Tarkany

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. - Julia Tarkany, 86, Merrillville, died Saturday (June 21, 2003).

The funeral will be at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at Stilinovich & Witrolik Funeral Home, 7535 Taft St., Merrillville, and at 10 a.m. at St. Michael Byzantine Church, with the Rev. Michael Evanick officiating. Burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery.

Visitation is from 2 to 5:30 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A Parastas will be recited at 5 p.m. at the funeral home Wednesday evening.

Mrs. Tarkany was born March 13, 1917, to George and Susan Sosh. She married John Tarkany, who preceded her in death.

Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Taylor and Lizabeth (Bill) Sawyer; one son, Russell (Shelby) Tarkany; grandchildren, Charles (Mary) Taylor, Cynthia (Terry Hope) Taylor, Cheryl (Terry) Spain, Christopher (Sherry) Taylor, Susan (John) Sechrist, Michael (Cheryl) Sawyer, Russell (Connie) Tarkany Jr., and Richard Tarkany; great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews friends and other relatives.

She also was preceded in death by a son, John; a son-in-law, Ray Taylor; two sisters, Mary Sulich and Helen Stuart; and one brother, John Sosh.

Mrs. Tarkany was a wonderful wife and mother and an avid sewer all her life. When her loving husband, John, retired, they both loved to travel the country with their fifth wheel camper.

Betty Crk

LaPORTE - Betty R. Buchanan Crk, 82, LaPorte, died at 5:05 a.m. Tuesday (June 24, 2003) at her home.

A private graveside service will be at Door Village Cemetery on Thursday, with the Rev. Jack M. Cox officiating. Burial will be in Door Village Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Mrs. Crk was born Sept. 27, 1920, in LaPorte, to Oscar and Gladys (Pearce) Buchanan. On May 27, 1944, in Sioux Falls, S.D., she married George F. Crk, who survives.

Survivors also include a sister, Dorothy Hager, LaPorte; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Oscar and Earl Buchanan.

Mrs. Crk was owner/operator of the Oakwood Store for 14 years and co-owner of Oakwood Construction for 40 years.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Michigan City. Mrs. Crk loved to do oil painting and was a member of Top Gardener.

Memorial contributions may be made to Center Township Fire Department or to Shriners for Crippled Children.

Paul E. Dierdorf Sr.

LaPORTE - Paul E. Dierdorf Sr., 80, LaPorte, died at 4:17 p.m. Monday (June 23, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers, Michigan City.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Dennis Carroll officiating. Burial will follow at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens. VFW Post 2536 will conduct full military services at the cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and from 10 a.m. until the service Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Dierdorf was born Aug. 23, 1922, in Jasonville, Ind., to Ervin and Tracey (Hadley) Dierdorf. On March 1, 1944, in Jasonville, he married Nora Mae Bedwell, who survives in LaPorte.

Survivors also include three sons, Norman (Tina) Dierdorf, The Pines, Kenneth (Pam) Dierdorf and Paul E. Dierdorf Jr., both of Michigan City; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Russel, Jasonville, and Barbara Mckenly, Paxton, Ind.; and one brother, James Dierdorf, Michigan City.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Marcella Bearickx; two sisters, Phyllis Ellis and Louise Leturges; two brothers, Roy and Wayne Dierdorf; and his stepmother Opel Dierdorf.

Mr. Dierdorf was founder and member of Solid Rock Church.

He served in the Navy during World War II and was an assemblyman at Whirlpool for 10 years before he retired.
