Jeffrey Kavanagh
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. -- Jeffrey P. Kavanagh, 56, Doylestown, formerly of Long Beach, died suddenly Tuesday (Oct. 21, 2003) at his home.
A memorial service was held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Doylestown, on Saturday. Interment will be held privately. The Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, New Britain, Pa., handled arrangements.
Mr. Kavanagh was born in Flushing, N.Y., to Raymond and the late Marie (Tomassi) Kavanagh. In 1986, in Madison, Wis., he married Christine L. Cole, who survives in Doylestown.
In addition to his wife and father, he is survived by two daughters, Sarah and Megan Kavanagh, both of Doylestown; one son, Matthew (Sally) Kavanagh, Portland, Ore.; and one sister, Donna Kavanagh, Long Beach.
Mr. Kavanagh grew up in Merrick, N.Y., and Long Beach. He attended Notre Dame School and graduated in 1964 from St. Mary's High School (Marquette High School) in Michigan City. He moved to the Chicago area, where he graduated from Loyola University in 1968. He received his master's degree in political science from Loyola University of Chicago and later received his master's of business administration from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
He and his wife moved to Doylestown in 1988, where he began working in residential and commercial real estate and later in marketing and sales. He and a partner recently launched a new business, Warehouse Structures Inc.
Mr. Kavanagh was a loving husband and father who had a sense of humor and was involved with his daughters. He enjoyed reading, bicycling, spending time with friends and taking walks with his family and his dog, Jake.

Byford Nelson
Byford Nelson, 80, Michigan City, died at 10:05 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 28, 2003) at his home.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Nelson was born Feb. 13, 1923, in Mt. Vernon, Ill., to Charles and Lavada (Hayes) Nelson. On Sept. 4, 1943, in Macon, Ga., he married Gladys Mae Beck, who died June 5, 1995.
Survivors include three daughters, Shirley (Charles) Collins, Coldwater, Mich., and Patricia (Steven) Benson and Linda (Don) Hamilton, Michigan City; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters.
Mr. Nelson worked for the Indiana Toll Road for 23 years. He retired in 1988.
He served three years in the U.S. Army during World War II. He had fought in the invasion of Normandy, France, and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 9423, Rolling Prairie.
Mr. Nelson enjoyed traveling with his wife. He also enjoyed fishing and camping when he was in better health.
Memorials may be made to the Franciscan Hospice Center.
Genevieve Serwatka
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Genevieve K. Serwatka, 88, Santa Clara, formerly of LaPorte, died Sunday (Sept. 28, 2003) at Kaiser Hospital, Santa Clara.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, LaPorte, with the Rev. Gerald A. Sroka officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.
Mrs. Serwatka was born Aug. 7, 1915, in LaPorte, to Andrew and Katherine (Slosarz) Serafin.
Survivors include her son, Thomas Serwatka, Santa Clara; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Julia Prusinski and Mary Zator; two brothers, Joseph Serafin and John Pilat; and one nephew, Julian Prucinski.
Mrs. Serwatka was a financial secretary at the LaPorte Community School Corp.
She was a member of the LaPorte Business Girls Association, Sacred Heart Altar and Rosary Society and the church choir, LaPorte Community Concert Association and the P.N.A. Club.
Rose Teeters
Rose L. Teeters, 88, LaPorte, died at 3 a.m. Monday (Oct. 27, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
Private family services will be in Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. William Fine officiating. A private burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Mrs. Teeters was born March 16, 1915, in Centerville, Iowa, to Frank and Anna (Wiesniewska) Novak.
Survivors include two daughters, Annette (Gary) Baker, Michigan City, and Donna Teeters, Knoxville, Tenn.; one son, James (Patricia) Teeters, Michigan City; three grandsons, Dale (Joanne) Teeters, South Bend, David Teeters, Michigan City, and Douglas (Terri) Teeters, Lake in the Hills, Ill.; two great-grandsons, Dylan Teeters, Lake in the Hills, and William Teeters, South Bend; and one great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Teeters, Lake in the Hills.
Mrs. Teeters was a homemaker and previously worked as a secretary at Greenwood Cemetery. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, nature and loved all animals.
Memorials may be made to the Open Door Health Clinic, the Michiana Humane Society or to Fried's Cat Shelter, Inc.
Robert Virge
KATY, Texas -- Robert Charles Virge, 79, a long-time resident of Michigan City, died at 4 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 21, 2003) at Katy Medical Center.
Cremation took place in Houston, and was handled by Claire Brothers Funeral Home. A memorial service is being planned.
Mr. Virge was born in Michigan City, on Sept. 4, 1924, to Clyde Alton and Zoa (Murray) Virge.
Survivors include one daughter, Vicky (Morris) Gemberling, Houston; a son, Thomas (Sandra) Virge, Houston; one grandson; two great-grandsons; four sisters, Violet Wilson, Buchanan, Mich., Zoa Sharpe, LaPorte, Elsa Erea, Valparaiso, and Geraldine McGee, Fish Lake; and many nieces and nephews.
His twin brother, Richard, died at 11 months of age. Two sisters, Laura Wright and Louise Graham, also preceded him in death, as did a half-brother, Gerald Weber.
Doris Biller
Doris Biller, 87, Michigan City, died at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 29, 2003) at Michigan City Health Care Center.
Cremation will take place. There will be no viewing. Root Funeral Home, 312 E. Seventh St., is handling arrangements.
Mrs. Biller was born Nov. 18, 1915, in Gladstone, Mich., to Claude and Nancy Mefford. On May 26, 1978, in LaPorte, she married Eugene Biller, who survives in Michigan City.
Survivors also include a son, William Sovich, Schererville, Ind.; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Natalie Sovich, both of Hobart; and a daughter-in-law, Lorraine Sovich, Hobart; three stepsons, Geoffrey L. Biller, Bell, Fla., Gerald E. Biller, LaPorte and David L. Biller, Austin, Texas; four stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
Preceding her in death were three brothers, William Mefford, Elmer Mefford and Claude Mefford Jr.
Mrs. Biller was the retired secretary and co-owner of Blueline, Inc., a blue printing company formerly in Michigan City and Schererville, after 23 years of service.
Memorials maybe made to the American Heart Association or Michiana Humane Society.
Jean Goggins
LONG BEACH -- Jean Frances Henry Goggins, 78, Long Beach, died at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 28, 2003) at her home.
A memorial mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Notre Dame Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard Emerson officiating. A reflection hour will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Cremation has taken place and the ashes will be interred privates. Arrangements were handled by Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City.
Mrs. Goggins was born Nov. 24, 1924, in Schenectady, N.Y., to Joseph and Mae (Smith) Henry. On April 10, 1947, in Schenectady, she married Richard J. Goggins, who died July 8, 2003.
Survivors include five sons, Daniel (Janice) Goggins, Westlake, Ohio, David (Jeannine) Goggins, Middletown, N.Y., John (Sharon) Goggins, Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., Michael (Kathryn) Goggins, Denver, Colo., and Richard W. Goggins, Lakeville, Mass.; two daughters, Margaret "Peggy" (Tom) Gordon, Chicago, and Nancy Edenborough, Noblesville, Ind.; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Parker.
Mrs. Goggins was a graduate of Lasell Junior College in Auburndale, Mass., where she was awarded the school banner for academic and athletic excellence. She has been an active member of the alumni association since 1945. Mrs. Goggins also attended Northeastern University in Boston.
She was employed in the treasury department of General Electric Co. in Schenectady until her marriage. Later, she was employed by the Northwest Athletic Club of Michigan City and served many years as a volunteer at St. Anthony Memorial Health Center.
Mrs. Goggins was honorary president of the Wine and Therapy Club (as her bridge club was referred to by members and close friends). She enjoyed golf and tennis and was a former member of the Long Beach Country Club. She was also a member of the Notre Dame Church Rosarians.

Monica Hager-Koontz
THREE OAKS, Mich. -- Monica A. Hager-Koontz, 33, Three Oaks, died Tuesday (Oct. 28, 2003) at Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph, Mich.
The funeral will be at noon E.S.T. Friday at the Greek Orthodox Church in New Buffalo, Mich., with the Rev. Basil Stamos of the Greek Orthodox Church officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, New Buffalo.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. E.S.T. today at Smith Funeral Chapel, 15 N. Barton St., New Buffalo, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Mrs. Hager-Koontz was born Sept. 14, 1970, in Columbus, Ohio, to George and Christina (Argyriadou) Hager.
Survivors include her father; one brother, Alexis Hager, Toledo, Ohio; a special friend, David Zericor, Three Oaks; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Mrs. Hager-Koontz loved to spend time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed playing bingo.
Memorials may be made to the family.
Thelma Nunn
WALKERTON -- Thelma M. Nunn, 91, Walkerton, died at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 14, 2003) at her home.
The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Walkerton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. James Evans officiating. Cremation took place and the ashes were buried in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.
There will be no visitation. Arrangements were handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte.
Mrs. Nunn was born Feb. 8, 1912, in Mitchell, S.D., to Vernon and Lizzie (Ursula) Hoke. She married Thomas Nunn in Eaton Rapids, Mich. He died Sept. 22, 1973.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Lou Puckett, Howesville, Ky.; a granddaughter, Lynette M. Branscom, Walkerton; two great-granddaughters, Jasmine M. Cain, Arkansas, and Desiree A. Thompson, Walkerton; four step-great-grandchildren and two stepgrandsons.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Vincent Hoke.
Mrs. Nunn retired from LaPorte Community Schools after serving as a teacher there for 12 years.
Joan Schacht
Joan Grace Schacht, 71, Michigan City, died at 3:56 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 28, 2003) at Life Care Center, Michigan City.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Carlisle Funeral Home, 613 Washington St., Michigan City, with the Rev. William H. Fine officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. until the service Friday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Schacht was born May 26, 1932, in Michigan City, to Arthur and Ruth (Cuquel) Kreighbaum.
Survivors include three daughters, Debra Lofland, Portage, Cynthia (Harry) Pagels, LaPorte, and Patricia Keating, Michigan City; six grandchildren, Stephanie and Peter Lofland, Alexandra and Cody Pagels and Nicholas and David Keating; and one brother, Arthur Kreighbaum, Michigan City.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Sandra Kreighbaum.
Mrs. Schacht had worked in the LaPorte County treasurer's office for 16 years.
Memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
