Robert Nelson

LaPORTE -- Robert A. Nelson, 82, LaPorte, died at 10:30 p.m. Monday (Nov. 3, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, with the Rev. Laura Altman officiating. Burial will take place in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

Visitation will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. until the time of service Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Nelson was born Oct. 15, 1921, in LaPorte County, to Arthur Luther and Emily (Johnson) Nelson. On Aug. 29, 1948, in LaPorte, he married Clara J. Boles, who died on Dec. 24, 1993.

Survivors include two sons, Arthur Nelson and Peter (Carla) Nelson, both of LaPorte; one sister, Betty Glasgow, LaPorte; four granddaughters, Alexia Johnson, Amanda Nelson, Andrea Nelson and Jessica Nelson; and one grandson, Luke Nelson.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Nelson.

Mr. Nelson was a farmer all his life. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and Masonic Lodge No. 222 F. & A.M. of Kingsbury.

Memorials may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church, 102 G St. LaPorte, IN 46350.

Yvonne Smith

MACON, Ga. -- Yvonne Smith, 43, Macon, formerly of LaPorte, died at 5:30 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 1, 2003) in Macon.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Kingsford Heights. Burial is at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. until time of the service Friday at the church.

Mrs. Smith was born Feb. 6, 1960, in Calumet, Mich., to Hildrom D. and Mary Helen (Cobb) Fisher, who respectively survive in Midland, Va., and San Diego. She married Jimmy L. Smith, who also survives in Macon.

Also surviving are a daughter, Kelly Fisher, Kingsford Heights; three brothers, Devaughn Fisher, Rockford, Ill., Ruben Fisher, San Diego, and Victor Fisher, San Diego; a sister, Yvette Fisher, LaPorte; a grandson, Tommy Lee Morris; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Smith was a housewife and attended First Baptist Church of Kingsford Heights.

Margaret Watt

LaPORTE -- Margaret C. Watt, 94, LaPorte, died at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday (Nov. 4, 2003) at her home.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John Lutheran Cemetery, with Rev. David Young officiating. There will be no visitation.

Mrs. Watts was born Oct. 13, 1909, in LaPorte, to George and Matilda (Siegert) Ulrich. On June 14, 1943, in LaPorte, she married George E. Watt, who preceded her on March 23, 1999.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Trueblood, LaPorte, and Penelope Brady, Sarasota, Fla.; one son, George M. Watt, LaPorte; three grandchildren, Matthew Trueblood, Amy Trueblood and Nathan Emerson; one sister, Adele McClelland, LaPorte; one brother, Ron Ulrich, LaPorte; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Marie Tanger, Eisle Galloway, Louise Berker, Pauline Wangerow and her twin, Eloise Haferkamp; and two brothers, Louis and Carl Ulrich.

Mrs. Watts worked as a registered nurse prior to her marriage and was a former owner of Tastee Freeze. She was a volunteer at St. John's Thrift Shop.

She was a graduate of LaPorte High School and the Fort Wayne Lutheran School of Nursing.

Irene Bechinski

Irene A. Bechinski, 92, Michigan City, died at 6:30 a.m. Monday (Nov. 3, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.

The funeral is at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, with the Rev. Walter Ciesla officiating. Burial is in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, where St. Stanislaus Rosary Sodality will recite the rosary at 4 p.m. Visitation also is from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where Mothers of World War II will conduct a memorial service at 9:30 a.m.

Mrs. Bechinski was born July 17, 1911, in Chesterton to Andrew and Josephine (Chlebowski) Losinski. On Oct. 22, 1932, in Michigan City, she married John H. Bechinski, who died Feb. 16, 1984.

She is survived by one daughter, Audrey (Dan) Eisele, Michigan City; one son, Ronald (Darlene) Bechinski, LaPorte; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dolores Eisele, Michigan City, and Viola Woods, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and one brother, Edwin Losinski, Michigan City.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Leona Flanigan and Ann Schutte, and one grandson, Scott Bechinski.

Mrs. Bechinski worked as a deli manager at Al's Thrifty Mart for 11 years before retiring. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church, its Rosary Sodality and Young at Heart Club, The Mothers of World War II.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.

Carol Dobkins-Reed

LaPORTE -- Carol A. Dobkins-Reed, 45, LaPorte, has died.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 12, 2003), at Carlisle Funeral Home, 613 Washington St., Michigan City, with the Rev. David Albertin officiating. Cremation will take place.

Ms. Dobkins-Reed was born Dec. 4, 1957, in Michigan City, to Raymon Dobkins Sr., who died in December 1999, and Lois Dobkins-Keffler (Bill), who survives in Rolling Prairie.

Survivors also include one daughter, Ariel (Kyle) Hancock, LaPorte; one son, Christopher Selby, Sarasota, Fla.; one granddaughter, Kayla Hancock, LaPorte; her former husband, Tom Reed, Michigan City; four brothers, Raymond (Jamie) Dobkins Jr. and Jim Dobkins, all of Michigan City, and David (Vicki) Dobkins and Tim (Lori) Dobkins, all of LaPorte; and two sisters, Donna (Scott) Werner, Galconda, Ill., and Diane (Darrel) Waire, Mishawaka, Ind.

Ms. Reed was a certified nursing assistant employed with the Visiting Nurses Association and also waitressed at different restaurants.

She was a beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She loved and adored her grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the Samaritan Center of Michigan City.

Barbara Howell

Barbara Ann Howell, 53, Michigan City, died at 9:15 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 30, 2003) at Carroll Woods Nursing Home, Michigan City.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Michigan City, with Pastor John McGee officiating. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. Saturday until the service at the church. Coleman-Williams & Hicks Funeral Home, 101 N. Karwick Road, handled the arrangements.

Mrs. Howell was born Sept. 5, 1949, in Germania, Miss., to Charlie and Madie Grace (Hicks) Grinston.

Survivors include one daughter, Lisa Cooper, Milwaukee, Wis.; two sons, Shelton (Nancy) Cooper and Mar Howell, both of Racine, Wis.; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Diane (Jimmie) Coleman and Betty Grinston, all of Michigan City; eight brothers, Charles (Beverly) Grinston, Schaumburg, Ill., Ray Grinston, Seattle, Wash., Michael (Janice) Grinston, Ricky Grinston, Danny (Rosie) Grinston and Tony (Lisa) Grinston, all of Michigan City, Jerome (Toya) Grinston, Beckenville, Calif., and Perez (Pam) Grinston, South Bend; special friends Dorothy Robinson, Minnesota, Donna Adams, Tucker, Ga., and Cathy Curtis, Milwaukee; and a special cousin, Judy Spicer, Cincinnati, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, grandmother and aunt.

She had been a cashier at Menard's in Wisconsin. She moved to Michigan City from Racine in 2001 and attended New Hope Baptist Church while here.

Jerald Larson

CHESTERTON -- Jerald D. Larson, 68, Chesterton, died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 2003) at VNA Horton Hospice Center in Valparaiso.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. Second St., Chesterton, with Scott Morris officiating. Burial will be in Chesterton Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 1 p.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Larson was born May 18, 1935, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, to Harley J. and Alice J. (Allie) Larson. On May 11, 1963, in Chesterton, he married Joan M. Youngren, who survives in Chesterton.

Survivors also include two sons, Jeff (Jane) Larson, Chesterton, and Jon (Gina) Larson, Las Vegas; one daughter, Julie Larson, Germantown, Md.; three grandchildren, Sean and Tyler Schemehorn, Germantown, and Julia Larson, Chesterton; and one sister, Donna Lagenour, Mitchell, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Harlan, Howard, James and Donald Larson.

Mr. Larson was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 150, Merrillville, and was an industrial electrician.

He enjoyed fishing and golf.

Memorials may be made to the VNA Horton Hospice Center, Valparaiso.

John Taylor

ATLANTA -- John Darryl Taylor, 46, Jackson, formerly of Michigan City, died Friday (Oct. 31, 2003) of a heart attack.

Westhaven Memorial Funeral Home in Jackson, Miss., handled arrangements.

Mr. Taylor was born Dec. 30, 1956, in Jackson, to Alphonso and Catherine Taylor.

Survivors include one brother, Alphonso (Janet) Taylor Jr.; two sisters, Catherine and Roberta Taylor; one nephew, Alphonso Taylor III; two nieces, Allison Taylor and Alecia (De'Mario) Harris; one great-niece, Taylor Harris; two aunts, Stella Taylor, Chicago, and Willie Mae Taylor, Weed, Calif.; and a host of cousins and friends.

Mr. Taylor attended Christ the King and Isabell Elementary schools in Jackson, and he graduated from Gentry High School in Indianola, Miss. He furthered his education at Utica Junior College and Hinds Junior College.

While living in Michigan City in the early 1990s, he attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

In 2002 he moved to the Atlanta area.

Infant Kaden Anthony Baker

Infant Kaden Anthony Baker died Tuesday (Oct. 18, 2003).

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at John's United Church of Christ, Michigan City, with the Rev. William Fine officiating.

Kaden was born Oct. 1, 2003, in Indianapolis to Amanda Baker, who survives in LaPorte.

Survivors include a grandmother, Debbie Baker, LaPorte; a grandfather, Kevin Baker, Sun Prairie, Wis..; an uncle, Bryan Baker, Sun Praoroe; and a great-grandmother, Thelma McLemore, Michigan City.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandfathers, Kennith McLemore and Dale Baker; a great-grandmother, Mary Baker; and a cousin, Lindsey Barkow.

Memorials may be made to the family at 1101 W. 10th St. Apartment 2C, LaPorte, IN 46350.

Wayne Brownlee

MILL CREEK -- Wayne A. Brownlee, 65, Mill Creek, died at 3:43 a.m. Thursday (Nov. 6, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital, LaPorte.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, with the Rev. Howard Ness officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Mill Creek.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home.

He was born Dec. 18, 1937, in LaPorte, to Creed R. and Hazel (Wearon) Brownlee. On Aug. 1, 1970, in Mill Creek, he married Linda R. Perry, who died Nov. 25, 1982.

Survivors include four sons, Gordan M. Brownlee, Larry (Elizabeth) D. Brownlee and Wayne (Tabatha) A. Brownlee, all of Mill Creek, and Leonard (Patricia) E. Brownlee, Twentynine Palms, Calif.; one daughter, Kerensa (Scott) MacLeod, Rolling Prairie; one brother, Lynn (Jean) Brownlee, Walkerton, Ind.; his mother-in-law Virginia Perry, Fish Lake; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Also preceding Mr. Brownlee in death were two brothers, Charles and James Brownlee; and one sister, Dorothy Zigler.

Mr. Brownlee was a machinist for New York Blower. Mr. Brownlee also was the owner and operator of the Wayne's Channel Cafe in Fish Lake. He was a member of the Mill Creek Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Teamsters Union. Mr. Brownlee enjoyed his grandchildren and farming.
