William J. 'Bill' Haskell

MONTICELLO -- Services for William J. "Bill" Haskell, 77, of 10403 East U.S. 24, Idaville, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Miller-Roscka Funeral Home.

He died at 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, in White County Memorial Hospital.

Born June 7, 1922, in Chicago, he was the son of Harry and Berdie Schmidt Haskell. On Sept. 21, 1952, in Cass County, he was married to Margaret White, who survives.

Bill was a 1940 graduate of Idaville High School and attended DePauw University in Greencastle for two years before joining the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a mailman for rural Idaville for 30 years and was also a dairy farmer.

A member of the Monticello Christian Church, he also belonged to the former Burnettsville Masonic Lodge, which has consolidated with Royal Center, and just this past spring he had received his 50-year Masonic pin.

Bill was an active member of the Eastlawn United Methodist Church in Idaville. He attended there for 62 years, served on nearly every church committee, and had taught Sunday School for some time.

During the consolidation of local schools, Bill served as secretary/treasurer for the Twin Lakes Schools Holding Corp. He was also a member of the Board of Zoning Appeals, the White County Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, the Holstein-Fresian Dairy Association, and the White County 4-H Fair Board, and he was the co-chairman of the 1960 Idaville Centennial.

Bill had many friends in the area that he visited on his CB radio. They could usually be found every morning talking on CB channel 13.

Also surviving are two sons, Dave L. Haskell, Brookston, and Jim R. Haskell, Idaville; one granddaughter, Nichole Haskell, Brookston; a sister, Hanna Clark, Crawfordsville; one brother, Glen Haskell, Monticello; and several nieces and nephews.

A brother, Charlie Haskell, preceded in death.

Minister Robert Story will officiate at the services. Burial, with military rites, will be in Riverview IOOF Cemetery, Monticello.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 8 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the White County Chapter of the American Cancer Society and the Monticello Christian Church building fund.

John A. Chandler

FRANKFORT -- Services for John A. Chandler, 90, of 1555 N. Main St., Frankfort, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Wesley Manor Chapel.

He died at 5:40 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, in his residence.

Pastor Gary Allan will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel.

Frye and Genda Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sheril E. Rockenbaugh

PERU -- Services for Sheril E. Rockenbaugh, 79, of Route 2, Peru, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home.

He died at 11:53 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, in his residence.

The Rev. Warrell Law will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

Francis B. 'Frank' Turnpaugh

Francis B. "Frank" Turnpaugh, 85, of 2701 George St., died Wednesday in St. Vincent's Hospital, Indianapolis.

Arrangements are pending at Fisher Funeral Chapel.

Victor S. Kline

Services for Victor S. Kline, 87, of 9147E U.S. 24, Peru, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Miami Baptist Church.

Mr. Kline died at 4 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, in his residence.

Born Aug. 24, 1912, in Cass County, he was the son of Slate and Anna Williams Kline. On Dec. 9, 1936, he was married in Logansport to Mildred D. "Millie" Pear, who died June 1, 1976. He was married in New Waverly Oct. 20, 1978, to Lucile Wilson Pear, who survives.

A former farmer and gas station attendant, Mr. Kline retired from John I. Shafer Hardwood.

He was a 1930 graduate of Logansport High School and a member of Miami Baptist Church.

Also surviving are one daughter, Karen Fecher, and her husband, Ron, Fort Wayne; three sons and their spouses, Dan and Kay Kline, Logansport, Stephen and Jean Kline, Elkhart, and John and Vicki Kline, Cincinnati, Ohio; one stepdaughter and her spouse, Sarah M. and Dennis Grenn, Indianapolis; and four stepsons and their spouses, Joseph and Diana Pear, William and Marsha Pear, Robert D. and Roberta Pear, and Daniel G. and Claudia Pear, all of Logansport; six grandchildren; 14 stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.

The Rev. Jan Hobbs will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery, Logansport.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday in McCloskey-Hamilton-Gundrum Funeral Home and one hour before services Saturday in the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Miami Baptist Church Expansion Fund and the Bethel Cemetery Maintenance Fund.

James Orville Wilson

KEWANNA -- Services for James Orville Wilson, 78, of Route 1, Kewanna, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. John Lutheran Church, Rochester.

He died at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, in St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Plymouth.

Born July 7, 1921, in Star City, he was the son of James Elmore and Emma Ethel Schirm Wilson. On Dec. 19, 1943, he was married in St. John Lutheran Church in Rochester to Wilma R. Dittman, who survives.

Mr. Wilson was a 1939 graduate of Kewanna High School and served during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

A Republican county councilman for 12 years, he also was a substitute mail carrier for Rural Route 2, Kewanna, for 20 years.

Mr. Wilson belonged to and was a former trustee of St. John Lutheran Church in Rochester, as well as a member of the American Legion of Rochester and the National Farmers Organization.

Also surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Nicki Wilson, Rochester, and Tim and Debbie Wilson, Kewanna; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lou and Bill Foerg, Royal Center, and Judy and Jack Graham, Lucerne; nine grandchildren, Kimberly Schroder, Scott and Eric Foerg, Nathan, Emily and Kurt Graham, Seth Wilson, and Kaylee and Taylor Wilson; and one great-grandson, Ethan Schroder.

Two brothers and one sister preceded in death.

The Rev. James W. Kreft will officiate at the services. Burial, with military rites, will be in Citizens IOOF Cemetery, Kewanna.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in Harrison-Metzger Funeral Home, Kewanna Chapel, and one hour before the services Saturday in the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John Lutheran Church.

Donna J. Carlson

Services for Donna J. Carlson, 77, of 619 14th St., will be held at 10:30 a.m. in McCloskey-Hamilton-Gundrum Funeral Home.

She died at 3:50 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, in Miller's Merry Manor.

Born Feb. 13, 1922, in Cass County, she was the daughter of Paul and Jennie Miller Simpson. On Jan. 11, 1942, in Royal Center, she was married to George A. Carlson, who died March 1, 1995.

A homemaker, Mrs. Carlson was a member of New Life Alliance Church.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Jack Holcomb, Rochester; two sons and one daughter-in-law, George D. and Peggy Carlson, Lafayette, and Jerold P. Carlson, Crestview, Fla.; three sisters, Betty Herrick, Royal Center, Helen Keller and Carolyn Hardy, both of Logansport; one brother, William Simpson, Kokomo; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Pastor Fred Drye will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Ever-Rest Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the New Life Alliance Church.

Robert E. Ward

BROOKSTON -- Services for Robert E. Ward, 89, of Twin Lakes Village, Monticello, formerly of 205 E. Fisher St., will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Hartzler Funeral Home.

He died at 9:25 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, in Twin Lakes Village.

Born Jan. 17, 1910, in Delphi, he was the son of Silas and Blanche Brewer Ward. On May 1, 1933, in Rensselaer, he was married to Louise H. Klinkhamer, who died May 4, 1998.

Mr. Ward, who resided in the Wolcott area between 1957 and 1992, had resided in Monticello since 1992. He retired from farming in 1970 and worked for Tri-County School Corp. from 1970 to 1975.

He was a member of Wolcott Baptist Church.

Surviving are six sons, Robert Ward Jr., Donald Ward and Joe Ward, all of Monticello, Charles Ward, of Monon, Fred Ward of Chalmers and Rick Ward of Leyden, Mass.; three daughters, Mrs. Dick (Ella) Bulington of Kentland; Mrs. Robert (Judy) Waymouth of Walton; and Mrs. Ed (Joan) Mitchell of Monticello; one brother Charles Ward of Texas; 23 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild.

One son John, four brothers, three sisters, and one great-grandchild preceded in death.

The Rev. David Vanaman will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Meadow Lake Cemetery, south of Wolcott.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the White County Council on Aging.

Neoma Buck

WINAMAC -- Neoma Buck, 83, of 404 E. 13th St., Winamac, died Wednesday in her residence.

Arrangements are pending at Frain Mortuary.

Chester ‘Chet’ Graham

GALVESTON -- Services for Chester "Chet" Graham, 86, of 10490E 1075S, Galveston, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Murray Funeral Home, Galveston Chapel.

He died at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, in St. Joseph Hospital & Health Center, Kokomo.

Born in Edgeley, N.D., he was the son of Louis James and Ada Gallbreath Graham. He was married in 1939 to Gretna Graham, who died in 1979. On May 14, 1983, he was married to Annabelle Walker, who survives.

Mr. Graham retired from Haines Satellite after 27 years of service. He was a member of the Quarter Horse Association, the Paint Horse Association and the Galveston American Legion. He loved to train horses, coon hunt and fish.

Surviving are eight stepchildren and their spouses, Marilyn and Bob Thomas, Greentown, Carolyn and Ken Duncan, Macy, Susan and Gary Frank, Summerdale, Ala., Richard and Debbie Walker and Mike and Lois Walker, all of Kokomo, and Betty and Jack Keller, Judy and Neal Ronk and David and Josie Walker, all of Galveston; four sisters, Helen Conner, Galveston, Ruth Blythe, New Mexico, Josephine Saunders, Colorado, and Maxine Garrett, California; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a special nephew and his wife, Henry "Connie" and Millie Gerdes, Galveston.

A brother and sister preceded in death.

The Rev. Larry Branden will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Galveston Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Francis B. ‘Frank’ Turnpaugh

Services for Francis B. "Frank" Turnpaugh, 85, of 2701 George St., will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Fisher Funeral Chapel.

He died at 1:08 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, in St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.

Born June 25, 1914, in Walton, he was the son of Carl and Clystie Mae Rousey Turnpaugh. On Aug. 19, 1935, in Logansport, he was married to Edna Leona Smith, who survives.

Mr. Turnpaugh was a yard conductor with the Pennsylvania Railroad, retiring in 1970 from Penn Central Railroad and he was a member of Grace Fellowship Church.

Also surviving are two daughters, Glenda Nolen, Logansport, and Nancy Offenberger, Walton; a sister, Theda Leffel, Logansport; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Two brothers and a sister preceded in death.

The Revs. William Art Maloney and Rex Grant will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Fellowship Church.

Mildred M. Hoover McGreevey

DELPHI -- Services for Mildred M. Hoover McGreevey, 88, of 6235W 500N, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Catholic Church.

She died at 1:50 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in Home Hospital, Lafayette. She had been a patient at St. Elizabeth Healthcare Center in Delphi since June.

Born Sept. 30, 1910, in Cass County, she was the daughter of Henry and Sophia Wisenburger Hoover. On April 11, 1932, in Delphi, she was married to John E. McGreevey, who died Oct. 12, 1985.

Mrs. McGreevey helped her husband farm and was involved with the family trash hauling business. She also worked as an attendant at the Logansport State Hospital from 1957 to 1971, retiring due to ill health.

A 1928 graduate of Delphi High School, she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Delphi and the Altar and Rosary Society of the church.

Surviving are one son, James E. "Jim" McGreevey, Delphi; two sisters, Adaline Rider and Ardella Berryman, both of Monticello; four granddaughters and seven great-grandchildren.

Four brothers and two sisters preceded in death.

Father Peter Vanderkolk will officiate at the services. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Delphi.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today in Abbott Funeral home, where a scripture service will be held at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.

Ruth B. Sumpter

Ruth B. Sumpter, 93, of Logansport, died Thursday at Chase Center.

Arrangements are pending at Fisher Funeral Chapel.

Raymond S. ‘Dutch’ Maroney

Graveside services for Raymond S. "Dutch" Maroney, 82, of 1073 Northeast 30th Terrace, Okeechobee, Fla., will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Metea Cemetery in Lucerne.

He died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, in H.H. Ralerson Hospital in Okeechobee.

Born April 24, 1917, in Lucerne, he was the son of Sylvester Edward and Hilda Naomi Stookey Maroney.

Mr. Maroney was a heavy equipment operator for 40 years, working out of Union Local 103, where he was a member.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and he enjoyed playing cards.

Surviving are five sisters and four brothers-in-law, Eileen and Mick Musselman, Marilyn and Al Schlaug, Phyllis and Chuck Inman, and Sue and Joe Kiesling, all of Logansport, and Sister James Agnes, Mishawaka; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Carole Maroney and Bill and Pat Maroney, all of Lucerne; and several nieces and nephews.

One sister, Barbara Clary, preceded in death.

Kenneth Smith will officiate at the services.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday in McCloskey-Hamilton-Gundrum Funeral Home.
