Nov. 21, 1968-Nov. 2, 2001

ELKHART -- Friends of Martin L. Russell, 32, of 52458 Winding Waters Lane, may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Osceola United Methodist Church. The funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church. The Revs. Brian Beeks and David Heim will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Street Cemetery.
Mr. Russell passed away at 9:51 a.m. Friday (Nov. 2, 2001) at Elkhart General Hospital.
He was born on Nov. 21, 1968, in Elkhart to Dennis E. and Norma K. (Replogle) Russell. He married Connie K. Hood on Oct. 19, 1996, in Osceola. She survives with his mother, Norma K. Replogle of Elkhart; his father and stepmother, Dennis (Denny) and Jan Russell of Colon, Mich.; one stepdaughter, Amanda Fletcher at home; one stepson, Bradley Fletcher at home; two brothers, Kelly (Ginger) of North Branch, Mich., and Todd of Colon, Mich.; and his paternal grandmother, Glendora Russell of Colon, Mich.
Mr. Russell worked as an engineer for Jayco Inc. in Middlebury in its gas motorized division. He was a member of Osceola United Methodist Church and enjoyed woodworking and motorcycling.

Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association.

MARIETTA SCHUSTER
May 27, 1912-Oct. 31, 2001

ELKHART -- Marietta Schuster, 89, of 3109 E. Bristol St., died at 7:50 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 31, 2001) at Eastlake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.Mrs. Schuster was born on May 27, 1912, in Rochester to Elmer E. and Mongolda (Shaw) Downs. On Aug. 9, 1935, she married John S. Schuster in Elkhart. He died on Feb. 7, 1988.
Surviving are one son, Leroy A. (Lois) of Ocean Shores, Wash.; one daughter, Mrs. Joann (Dr. Claude) Hartman of Elkhart; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Max (Louise) Cripe, is deceased.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Elkhart Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, where services will be at 11 a.m. Monday. The Rev. Dr. Mark Fenstermacher of Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate, and burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.
Mrs. Schuster retired in 1972 from CTS Corp. She was a member of First Brethren Church, where she served as pianist. She also was pianist for a kazoo band in Elkhart and was a member of Friendly Pioneers and the Elkhart YWCA.
Memorials may be given to First Brethren Church.

ANNA L. McDOWELL
Jan. 31, 1942-Nov. 1, 2001 ELKHART

Anna L. McDowell, 59, of 58136 Valley View Drive, died at 12:57 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 1, 2001) at her home. Mrs. McDowell was born on Jan. 31, 1942, in Freeman, W.Va., to Daniel B. and Hazel L. (Quesinberry) Wright and married Richard E. McDowell on Jan. 9, 1962. He died on Jan. 11, 1989.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Phillip (Rebecca) Bollman; three sons, Marc, Robi (Debbie) and Timothy McDowell; her mother; two brothers, Richard (Judy) and Daniel (Marie) Wright; two grandchildren; and one stepgranddaughter, all from Elkhart. One daughter, Debbie McDowell, died on Sept. 18, 1966.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Elkhart Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Episcopal Church, Elkhart. The Rev. Henry Randolph and the Rev. Francis McKee, pastors, will officiate. Burial will be in the Chapel of Peace Mausoleum, Rice Cemetery.
Mrs. McDowell was employed for 12 years at MCL Cafeteria at Concord Mall. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.
Memorials may be given to Elkhart General Community Hospice or the church.

DIEDRE RODINO BOOTH
Nov. 3, 1965--Nov. 2, 2001

ELKHART -- Diedre Rodino Booth, 35, of 808 H Lane, died at home on Friday (Nov. 2, 2001). She was born Nov. 3, 1965, in Elkhart to Louis and Jean (Fleming) Rodino. She married Raymond L. Booth Sept. 20, 1998. He died April 9, 2001.
Survivors include her parents of Elkhart; two brothers, Thomas (Krista) Rodino of Oswego, Ill., and Matthew Rodino of Tempe, Ariz.; two grandmothers, Regina Rodino of Elkhart and Martha Fleming of Valparaiso; and two nieces.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Elkhart Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church. The Rev. John J. Overmyer will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Street Cemetery.
Mrs. Booth was a homemaker and a member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church.
Memorials may be given to the Epilepsy Foundation of America.

Gerald D. LaVoy
May 5, 1916-Nov. 7, 2001

GOSHEN -- Gerald D. LaVoy, 85, of 1509 Dogwood Court, formerly of Elkhart, died at 2:25 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 7, 2001) at Goshen General Hospital.

Mr. LaVoy was born on May 5, 1916, in Chamberlain, S.D., to Charles and Hilda (Inquist) LaVoy and married Virginia Grise on Aug. 27, 1944, in Elkhart. She died Oct. 17, 1999.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews. Four brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Elkhart Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral, Elkhart, where services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Shepherd G. Harkness of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Goshen, will officiate, and burial will be in Rice Cemetery, Elkhart.

Mr. LaVoy retired from Elkhart Rubber Works as a pressman after 36 years. He was a longtime member of the former Grace United Methodist Church in Elkhart and was currently a member of St. Mark's.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Daisy A. McLaughin
March 7, 1911 - Nov. 17, 2001

ELKHART -- Daisy A. McLaughlin, 90, of 56683 Shore Ave., died at 4:10 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 17, 2001) at Elkhart General Hospital. She was born March 7, 1911, in Baugo Township to Delbert and Josephine Pletcher. She married Harold C. McLaughlin in LaPorte. He died in 1967.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Friends may call from to 8 p.n. today at the Elkhart Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home where the funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Thomas H. Montgomery of Jamestown United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery.

Mrs. McLaughlin retired in 1972 as a machine operators for Excel Corp. in Elkhart. She was a member of VFW Post No. 88 Auxiliary, the Elkhart.

Cynthia Mott
ELKHART -- Cynthia E. Mott, 46, of 900 W. Mishawaka Road, died at 6:25 p.m. Thursday (July 1, 2004) at home.

Arrangements are pending at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home, 403 W. Franklin St., Elkhart.

Catherine White
Nov. 17, 1921-June 30, 2004

ELKHART -- Catherine E. White, 82, of C.R. 4, died at 8:40 p.m. Wednesday (June 30, 2004) at home.

She was born Nov. 17, 1921, in Goshen, to Don and Viola (Yontz) Decker. She married George A. White on May 11, 1945, in Elkhart. He died Jan. 2, 2003.

She is survived by two daughters, Dorcas (Richard) Curths and Vicki (Richard) Bloss, both of Elkhart; three grandchildren; and a half brother, James Decker of Carver, Mass.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd., Elkhart, where the funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Lee Soloman, vice president of Ashland Theological Seminary, will officiate. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. White was a graduate of Elkhart Business College. She retired as office manager after 16 years with Richard M. Groff & Associates. She was a charter member of Winding Waters Brethren Church, where she served on the board for many years.

Memorials may be given to Winding Waters Brethren Church.

Margaret Burris
June 15, 1916-July 1, 2004
OSCEOLA -- Margaret U. Burris, 88, of Peony Avenue, died Thursday (July 1, 2004) in Regency Place Nursing Home in South Bend.

She was born June 15, 1916, in South Bend, to Albert and Frances (Hurst) Katterheinrich. She married Pastor Clyde Burris on Nov. 8, 1936, in Mishawaka. He died Dec. 5, 2003.

She is survived by a son, Ronnie (Cheryl) Burris of Granger, a daughter, Sue Shields of Mishawaka; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Hubert, Lloyd and Charles Katterheinrich; two sisters, Alice Venis and Lucille Hurtercant; and son-in-law Jake Shields.

Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Bethany Missionary Church, 56295 C.R. 1 S. Pastor David Swihart of the church and Pastor Mike Peters will officiate. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.

Mrs. Burris worked for the Red Cross during World War II. She was formerly employed at Prickett's store as a cashier. She was a member of Bethany Missionary Church.

Memorials may be given to Bethany Missionary Playground Fund.

Gladys Bates
Nov. 23, 1905-June 30, 2004
ELKHART -- Gladys King Bates, 98, of 1001 W. Hively Ave., died at 4:25 p.m. Wednesday (June 30, 2004) in Elkhart General Hospital.

She was born Nov. 23, 1905, in Vincennes, to Ulysses and Etta (Brewer) Mitchell. She married James T. King. He preceded her in death. She then married James Bates. He also preceded her in death.

She is survived by two daughters, Dolores (Pastor John) Coleman of Elkhart and Martha T. Dandridge of Mount Vernon, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, James T. King Jr.; a daughter, Gladys M. Whitehead Ellis; two brothers, Lemuel and Francis Mitchell; and a sister, Ollie M. Mitchell.

Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be sent at www.billingsfuneralhome.com.

A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. July 18 at Mt. Sinai Worship Center Church of God in Christ, 835 W. Blaine Ave., Elkhart. Pastor John V. Coleman, her son-in-law, will officiate. A meal will follow the service in the church fellowship hall.

Mrs. Bates formerly lived in Milwaukee, Wis. She was an LPN at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and for the State of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. She was a longtime member of St. Mark's AME Church in Milwaukee and the church DOERS Club. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and community work.

Memorials may be given to Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Wednesday at River Oaks Community Church, 58020 C.R. 115, Goshen where services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday. The Reverend Tim Rowland will officiate. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Aaron was a Senior at Memorial High School where he was a Varsity Starter with the Soccer Team.He was an Honor Roll Student, member of the PSI Group with the school and enjoyed paintball and cars. Memorial contributions may be given to the Aaron, Adam & Allen Memorial Fund c/o Elkhart Community Bank. Stemm Lawson Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Boulevard is in charge of the arrangements.

Mildred E. Armstrong

Mildred "Millie" Armstrong, 80, of 58389 CR# 3 South, Elkhart, died at 3PM Monday, April 29, 2002 at Millers Merry Manor, Wakarusa. She was born August 11, 1921 in Elkhart to Riley and Goldie (Parks) Cook. She married Gerald D. Armstrong on December 21, 1941 in Elkhart. He died on February 14, 1978. Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Larry (Janet) Johnson and Mrs. Robert (Wanda) Funderburk both of Elkhart. 3 Grandchildren and 6 Great-grandchildren. She was preceeded in death by a son, Lance corporal Douglas Armstrong, a granddaughter, Joyce Ellen Miller and 2 brothers, Wendell and Bert Cook, and a sister, Esther Bleile. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at 2 PM Thursday at the Elkhart Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home. Tom Thews of Jamestown United Methodist Church will officiate and burial will be in Prairie Street Cemetery. Mrs. Armstrong was a homemaker, and had worked for 13 years at the Elkhart General Hospital Cheery corner. She was a member of the Jamestown United Methodist Church and a member of the Gold Star Mothers. Memorials may be given to the Senior Citizens group or the United Methodist Women of Jamestown United Methodist Church.

Henry Polman
Jan. 29, 1923-July 3, 2004
ELKHART -- Henry B. Polman, 81, of 317 Crescent St., died at 12:55 p.m. Saturday (July 3, 2004) at AmeriCare Living Center in Elkhart.

He was born Jan. 29, 1923, in Zevenaar, The Netherlands, to Gerardus and Theodora Johanna (Jansen) Polman. He married Jacqueline Miller on March 27, 1951. She died Dec. 6, 1980. He married Ann (Tucker) Pfeiffer on Aug. 18, 1984, in Elkhart.

She survives with one son, Henry B. "Hank" Polman Jr. of Mishawaka, and three brothers, Bernard (Truus) Polman, Gerrit (Jo) Polman and Willem "Wim" Polman, all of The Netherlands.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Jan, and three sisters, Marie, Dina and Annie.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home & Crematory, 700 E. Jackson Blvd., where the service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. James Seculoff of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bristol will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka.

Mr. Polman moved to the United States in 1949 from The Netherlands and started working at the St. Joseph Farms in South Bend. For a short time, he share farmed. In 1963 and 1966, he purchased two farms in North Liberty and worked and managed them both until his death.

He enjoyed fishing and raising flowers and dwarf fruit trees.

Memorials may be given to the Elkhart General Community Hospice.

Rosemary Raab
July 8, 1921-July 3, 2004
EDWARDSBURG -- Rosemary E. Raab, 82, of Lakeview Drive, Garver Lake, died at 11:30 a.m. Saturday (July 3, 2004) at Cass County Medical Care Facility, Cassopolis, after an illness.

She was born July 8, 1921, in Mishawaka to Milo and Florine (Belting) Kirkpatrick. She married A. John Raab on May 9, 1946, in Mishawaka. He died Dec. 5, 2000.

Survivors include two sons, John C. (Darlene) Raab of Edwardsburg and the Rev. Ronald P. Raab of Portland, Ore.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert (Jean) Kirkpatrick and Thomas (Patricia) Kirkpatrick, both of Mishawaka; and one sister, Joann (Paul) Bruggeman of Middletown, Ohio.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. (Michigan time) Tuesday at the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, where a rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. There also will be calling one hour before the service at 10:30 a.m. (Michigan time) Wednesday at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 24832 U.S. 12, Edwardsburg. The Rev. Ronald P. Raab, Mrs. Raab's son, will officiate. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.

Mr. Raab and her husband owned the Raab Supermarket in Mishawaka from 1946-1967 and the Raab Supermarket in Edwardsburg and Constantine from 1967 to 1991. She and her husband moved from Mishawaka to Edwardsburg in 1960.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, a former member of the Michigan Grocers Association and a former member of the Edwardsburg Chamber of Commerce.

Memorials may be given to the Community Pantry at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church or to the Cass County Medical Care Facility, 23770 Hospital St., Cassopolis, MI 49031.
