Dennis D. Hicks

Dennis D. Hicks, 70, Anderson, died Feb. 7, 2003, at Community Hospital after an extended illness.

He was born May 15, 1932, in Sullivan and lived in this area since 1955. He retired from Delco Remy Division of General Motors.

He served his country in the Marines during the Korean War. His family was very important to him.

He is survived by his four children, Roy (wife, Martina) Hicks of Anderson, Ronald Hicks of Shelbyville, Denise Starling and Teresa (husband, Rick) Fox, all of North Carolina; sister, Virginia West of Arcadia, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Lois Ridge of Indianapolis and Louise Ridge of Paxton; brother-in-law, James Ridge of Paxton; grandchildren, Krista Brown, Kati Fox, Kara Fox, Brooks Gardener and Zachary Starling, all of North Carolina, Joshua Hicks and Jordan Hicks, both of Anderson, and Justin Hicks and Montgomery Hicks, both of New Castle; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded by his wife, whom he married in 1955 in Sullivan, Betty (Ridge) Hicks on Nov. 19, 1985; parents, Levi Bart and Sarah Hicks; brothers, William Hicks, Don Hicks and Tommy Hicks; and a great-granddaughter.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, 200 W. 53rd St., with Pastor Bradley Smith officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 266.

Visitation will be 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Lewis E. Smith

Lewis Edwin Smith, 90, Anderson, died Feb. 6, 2003, at Marion General Hospital in Marion after an extended illness.

He was born Sept. 6, 1912, in Holton, Ind., and lived in Anderson since 1939. He retired from Delco Remy Division of General Motors on Oct. 1, 1980, after 41 years, where he was an equipment maintenance person.

He served his country in the U.S. Army serving with the 406th Field Artillery Group as a field technician in the European Theater Operation.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Anderson, and lived a true Christian life. In the true American spirit, he built his home in Anderson from the ground up. He laid the stone, added on rooms, built a barn and generally tinkered and maintained the homestead that he himself had created for his family. In his quiet moments, he wrote poems.

On Jan. 24, 1942, he was united in marriage to Mary Marie Denbo who survives. They were married for 61 years. Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Marlys Ann (Smith) and husband Michael Baker of Marion; a grandson, Jason Baker of Marion; a granddaughter, Heather (Nesbitt) and husband John Nelson of Marion; a great-grandson, Matthew Nelson; two great-granddaughters, Kirstin Nelson and Sarah Nelson, all of Marion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Andrew and Mary Melvina (McMinds) Smith; five brothers; and a twin sister.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, 200 W. 53rd St., with the Rev. Grace Burton-Edwards of the First United Methodist Church, Anderson, officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the South Chapel.

Wilford Brooks

MADISON -- Wilford Brooks, 89, Madison, died Feb. 7, 2003, at Hickory Creek Nursing Home, Madison, after an extended illness.

He was born May 31, 1913, in Switzerland County, and had been a resident of this area since 1930. He retired from Guide Lamp Division of General Motors in 1965 after 30 years of employment. He also retired from Anderson Community Schools.

He was a member of Southern Heights Christian Church. He coached Little League baseball at Shadyside Park in Anderson for 27 years. He also had a ball park named in his honor.

He is survived by his sister, Roberta Hamilton of Madison; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel (Smith) Brooks, in 1988; his parents, Oliver T. and Lilly Mae (Brooks) Brooks; and five brothers and sisters including Emerson Brooks.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery with Pastor Ed Wilkinson officiating.

Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson.

Louise Richardson

NOBLESVILLE -- Louise "Lou" (Simmons) Richardson, 87, Noblesville, died Feb. 7, 2003, at Riverwalk Village in Noblesville.

She was born July 17, 1915, in Indiana, the daughter of Beecher Simmons and Mayme (White) Simmons. She was a homemaker.

She married Robert "Andy" Richardson in 1937.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, 2051 Monument St., and was active in Tri Kappa Sorority for 55 years. She was a 1933 graduate of Anderson High School.

Survivors include two daughters, Vicky Harrison of Fishers and Suzi White of Noblesville; grandchildren, Alissa Hinkle, Andy Hinkle, Amanda White and Ryan White; and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Sarah Hinkle.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Robert "Andy" Richardson; father, Beecher Simmons; and mother, Mayme Simmons.

Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Randall & Roberts Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Wolf officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2501 Monument St., Noblesville, IN 46060 or the charity of the donor's choice.

Russell W. McClasky

Russell W. McClasky, 53, Anderson, died Feb. 6, 2003 at St. John's Medical Center after a sudden illness.

He was born Sept. 10, 1949 in Anderson, and was a lifelong Anderson resident. He was working as a school bus driver for Anderson Transit System. He had previously been employed at Emge Meat Packing plant for 19 years. He was a graduate of Anderson High School.

He was an avid Civil War re-enactor with the 35th Indiana Volunteers First Irish. He was also a member of Hoosier Kite Fliers Society, Anderson Kennel Club and the National Rifle Association. He was a member of Meadowbrook Baptist Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 266 and the American Legion Post 127.

He is survived by his wife, whom he married in Anderson on Nov. 11, 1995, Nancy (Hamm) McClasky; mother, Mary Lou (Reynolds) McClasky; son, Devin McClasky of Anderson; sister, Marlene (husband, Michael) Barnard of Elwood; special family member, Teri (husband, David) McConnell of Anderson; mother-in-law, Madeline Hamm of Anderson; granddaughter, Brittanie McClasky; nieces, Carla Elsworth, Kelly (husband, Ed) Rich and Kristin Barnard, all of Frankton; great-nephews, Dale Rich and Payton Ellsworth, both of Frankton; special friends, Frank and Carol Watson of Anderson, Butch and Brenda Buell of Middletown, Brian Silvey of Anderson, Brian and Amy Henry of Frankton, and Kevin and Lucinda Rushton, Charles Schwab and Sherry and Johnny Massey, all of Anderson

He was preceded in death by his father, Bernard Russell McClasky; and a brother, Marty McClasky.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, with Pastor Dennis Zirkle officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery, where military graveside rites will be conducted by the VFW Post 266 and the 35th Indiana Volunteers First Irish.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the South Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Indiana War Memorial Foundation-Civil War Museum in Indianapolis or the Madison County Shrine Club, The Shrine Children's Hospital.

L. Michael Baugh

FORTVILLE -- L. Michael Baugh, 39, Fortville, died Feb. 4, 2003, in Fortville.

He was employed as a surgical scheduler at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Tina (Cross) Baugh; daughter, Ciara C. Baugh; father, Larry D. Baugh; mother and stepfather, Carol (LaFortune) and Charles Minch; brothers, Darrell A. Minch and Phillip Minch; sister, Michele Erickson; grandfather, Francis LaFortune; four nieces; and four nephews.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Ronald L. Seals Funeral Home with the Rev. Jon Vance officiating. Burial will be in Gravel Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Doris Garrison

Doris Garrison, 63, Anderson, died Feb. 4, 2003, at her residence after an extended illness.

She was born July 21, 1939, in Monterey, Tenn., and lived in Anderson since 1965. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Elbert Garrison of Anderson; three sons, James (wife, Holly) Garrison, Michael Garrison and Jeffrey (wife, Teresa) Garrison, all of Anderson; daughters, Starr (husband, Brett) Gilman of Alexandria and Jennifer (husband, Joseph) Heckendorn of Ann Arbor, Mich.; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mildred Plumber of Tipp City, Ohio, Sylvia Tinch of Monterey, Tenn., and Bennie Nell Phillips of Dayton, Ohio; and a brother, James Harold Tinch of Monterey, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carson and Ruby (Tabor) Tinch; son, Victor Garrison, in 1963; two sisters; and two brothers.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Marcum officiating. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Crossville City Cemetery in Crossville, Tenn.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Opha W. Kelly

MUNCIE -- Opha W. Kelly, 97, Muncie, died Feb. 4, 2003, at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie after a brief illness.

He was born March 30, 1905, in Anderson, and lived in this area all of his life. He retired in 1970 from Delco Remy Division of General Motors after more than 40 years of employment and was also a baker.

He was a lifetime ham radio operator and held the title of General.

He is survived by two children, Betty (husband, R. Eugene) Swindell of Yorktown and Jack (wife, Florence) Kelly of St. George, Utah; five grandchildren, Kay Tarr, Suzanne Terrell, Deborah Heath, Jennifer Harris and Kimberly Thaxton; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. (Rice) Kelly; parents, Clarence Post and Alice Gertrude (Bodenhorn) Kelly; brother, Theo Kelly; half brother, Clarence Post; and grandson, Jay Kelly.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson, with Brother Daniel Heath officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Lapel.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Friday at the South Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Heart Research or American Cancer Society.

Myrtle I. Montgomery

LAPEL -- Myrtle I. (Stottlemyer) Montgomery, 87, Lapel, passed away Feb. 5, 2003, at Miller's Senior Living Center in Indianapolis after a brief illness.

She was born July 3, 1915, in Madison County, the daughter of Harry and Jessie (Graham) Stottlemyer. She was a 1933 graduate of Lapel High School and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lapel.

Survivors include a brother-in-law, Gene Montgomery of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Grace Whitmer of San Diego, Calif.; three cousins, Dean Presser, Ruth Boone Herron and Arlene Pettigrew, all of Lapel; and her caregivers, Margaret and Sergio Comarella of Fishers.

She was preceded in death on Nov. 16, 1989, by her husband, Joseph J. Montgomery, whom she married July 28, 1935.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home in Lapel with the Revs. Evan Lash and Duane Stidham officiating. Burial will be at the Brookside Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Thomas M. Morris

Thomas M. Morris, 81, Anderson, died Feb. 4, 2003, at St. John's Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was born July 7, 1921, in Montpelier, and lived in Anderson since 1947. He was a conductor for New York Central Railroad for 33 years, retiring in 1980 from Conrail.

He was a member of Chesterfield Christian Church. He graduated from Huntington High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was past president of UTU Local 318, where he served as local chairman. He was a friend of plants and animals. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Huntington and was a masterful woodworker.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 56 years, Mary Ellen (Waggoner) Morris of Anderson, whom he married on June 15, 1947, in Huntington; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Thomas A. and Cindy Morris of Fort Wayne, and Gary W. and Toni Morris and Mickey L. Morris, all of Anderson; five grandchildren, Amy Morris, Chris (wife, Jennifer) Morris, Craig Morris and fiancee, Holly, Jeremy Morris and Cara (husband, Ray) Trusty; a sister, Treva Douglas of Warren; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Reve and Nina Morris of Snook, Texas, Gordon and Patricia Morris of Wabash and Robert Morris of Anderson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Thomas and Mary Ann (Murphy) Morris; three sisters; and five brothers.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service with Pastor Ned Clark officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post 266.

Visitation will be two hours before the service Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Lawrence E. Smith Sr.

SUMMITVILLE -- Lawrence E. Smith Sr., 82, Summitville, died Feb. 4, 2003, at his residence after an extended illness.

He was born Feb. 17, 1920, in West Virginia, the son of Johnathan Burton and Oddie (Rowh) Smith, and lived in Summitville since 1946.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II under the command of Gen. George Patton. He had been employed by the former Johns-Manville Product Corp. in Alexandria for 35 years and retired in 1982.

He was a member of the Johns-Manville Quarter Century Club. He had worked at the Diamond Car Wash in Alexandria for 12 years. His family was his pride in life and he always found great comfort and joy being with them. He was a people person and will be remembered by many as the friendly, caring and loving individual that he was. His love also extended to the birds, for he made sure that those lucky enough to be in his area were always fed.

He was a member of the Back Creek Wesleyan Church in Fairmount.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Jane (Hendrix) Smith; daughter, Laura Eastman of Summitville; sisters, Opal Dauenhauer and Goldie Morris, both of Michigan; three grandchildren, Chad (Tiffany) Eastman of Martinsville, Missy (Ryan) Mitchell of Savannah, Ga., and Darnell Eastman and fiancé, John Mosley, both of Noblesville; and a great-grandson, Cole Eastman of Martinsville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Lawrence "Hank" Smith Jr. in 1990; grandson, Lawrence E. Smith III, in 1974; and two sisters, Betty Ball and Laura Koon.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Owens-Noffze Funeral Home, 1009 W. Walnut St., Summitville, with the Rev. Bill Hand of Back Creek Wesleyan Church in Fairmount officiating. Burial will be in Vinson Memorial Park Cemetery in Summitville where full military graveside rites will be conducted by the Elwood Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5782 Color Guard.

Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Helen V. Knotts Allen

April 26, 1922 -- July 28, 2003

CHESTERFIELD -- Helen Virginia (Cox) Knotts Allen, 81, Chesterfield, died July 28, 2003, at Community Hospital, Anderson, after a sudden illness.

She was born April 26, 1922, in Anderson, and lived in Chesterfield all of her life. She retired from Delco Remy Division of General Motors.

She is survived by her two children, Patty and husband Tex Crossland of Texas and Bonnie and husband Bud Litten of Chesterfield; grandchildren, Tina and husband Jim Jennings of Oregon, Lynnette and husband Cecil McNutt of Maine, Paige Newton of Texas, Trina Harney and Chris Reason of Anderson, Sandy Allen and Scot McClintock of Chesterfield, Scott and wife Jennifer Litten of Anderson, and Joe Allen of Chesterfield; great-grandchildren, Jennifer, James, Hailey, Keaton, Dugan, Kaycee, Christashia, Sydney, Cecelia and Luke; and an aunt, Geraldine Dixon.

Also surviving is special friend, Tab Romine.

She was preceded in death by her husband, whom she married April 25, 1941, Earl Samuel Knotts, on Feb. 26, 1957.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson, with Pastor Bradley Smith officiating. Burial will be in Grovelawn Cemetery, Pendleton.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the South Chapel.

Mary Christie

Mary Christie, 90, Anderson, died July 30, 2003, at St. John's Medical Center. Arrangements are pending at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home.

Kenneth G. Gibbs

Jan. 29, 1920 -- July 30, 2003

Kenneth H. "Gibby" Gibbs, 83, Anderson, died July 30, 2003, at Bethany Pointe Health Campus, Anderson, after an extended illness.

He was born Jan. 29, 1920, in Lebanon, Ind., and lived in this area since 1933. He retired in 1975 from the maintenance department at Rolling Hills Nursing Center. He served his country in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 266 and the American Legion. He was a disabled American Veteran. He was a former member of the Elks and Eagles.

He is survived by a daughter, Sharon and husband Lynn Matheson of Anderson; granddaughter, Terri (Bathauer) Neuendorf of Anderson; brother, Paul Gibbs of San Francisco, Calif.; five sisters, Mary Ann Heinlen of Tucson, Ariz., Helen Linn of Hemit, Calif., Martie Ripberger of Zionsville, Nellie Cordell of Indianapolis, and Vicki Wilson of West Palm Beach, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his wife, whom he married April 6, 1940, Mary (Roberts) Gibbs, on June 8, 1996; parents, Robert H. and Carrie (Sanders) Gibbs; and two brothers, Hubert Harold Gibbs and Robert "Bobbie" Gibbs Jr.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson, with the Rev. Ralph Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by the VFW Post 266.

Visitation will be one hour before service Saturday at the South Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society-Relay for Life.
