Bertha V. Farmen

Feb. 18, 1911 - Jan. 2, 2007

Bertha Verna (Mills) Farmen, 95, Anderson, died Jan. 2, 2007, at St. John’s Medical Center in Anderson after an extended illness.

She was born Feb. 18, 1911, in Riga, N.Y., and resided in Anderson since 1992. She had also resided in Macon, Ga. She was employed as a clerk with the May Co. in Cleveland, Ohio, for 12 years.

She was a member of South Meridian Church of God in Anderson, Senior Adult Sunday school class, volunteer with RSVP and member of Keenagers. She loved to crochet, knit and bake pies. While she lived in Cleveland she taught Sunday school at Pearl Road Church of God and Lakeview Church of God, and was a member of the Missionary Society.

Survivors include two sons, Dr. William “Bill” Farmen and wife Pam of Anderson, and Richard Charles Farmen and wife Merrilyn of Macon, Ga.; five grandchildren, Mark (wife, Sara) Farmen of Martinsville, David (wife, Angel) Farmen of Anderson, Megan Caudill-Farmen of Daleville, Carissa Caudill-Farmen of Daleville, and Ricki Michael Farmen of Macon, Ga.; three great-grandchildren, Chayla Farmen, Abigail Farmen and Lydia Farmen; a stepgreat-grandchild, Erica Maines; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Donald Farmen; parents, John and Nettie Mills; a brother, Morris Mills; and four sisters, Agnes Blanchard, Daisy Schrive, Blanche Mills and Mary Muhs.

Services will be conducted at 5 p.m. Saturday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service with Rob Mifflin officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Brookland Heights Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.

Visitation will be two hours before service Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to South Meridian Church of God.

William L. Hernley

Aug. 17, 1922 - Jan. 1, 2007

MUNCIE - William Leonard Hernley, 84, Muncie, died Jan. 1, 2007, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 17, 1922, in Spartensburg, the son of William and Garcia (Martin) Hernley. He was an U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was employed as a construction superintendent for Hagermann.

He was a member of Center Chapel United Methodist Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7081.

Survivors include a son, C. Alan (wife, Karol) Hernley of Carmel; two daughters, Vickie L. (husband, Chris) Cumings of Muncie, and Rebecca K. (husband, Greg) Brown of Burleson, Texas; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda E. (Likens) Hernley in 1999; a son, Terry W. Hernley; his parents; and a grandson, Greg A. Brown Jr.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at M.J.S. Mortuaries-Dunkirk Chapel. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Visitation will be 2 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Lung Association.

James H. Linscott

July 24, 1952 - Jan. 1, 2007

James Harmond Linscott, 54, Anderson, died unexpectedly Jan. 1, 2007, at his home, from natural causes.

He was born July 24, 1952, in Nelsonville, Ohio, he is the son of J. Paul & Wahneta Wolfe Linscott of Athens, Ohio.

A 1970 graduate of Federal Hocking (Ohio) High School and a 1972 graduate of Hocking College. Jim was the owner of Linscott Photography. He served on the Athens County Fair Board from 1974-1986 and was treasurer of the board for many years. He also served as yearbook advisor for several years at Federal Hocking High School.

Jim first became associated with horse racing in the 1970s through the county fair circuits in Ohio, providing winner’s circle photos for harness racing. He has been track photographer at Hoosier Park since 1996. He began providing photo finish as well and branched out into neighboring states with both positions. His work soon landed him in the pari-mutuel racetrack field. He provided winner’s circle photography for tracks such as Lebanon Raceway (Ohio), Oaklawn Park (Arkansas), Fonner Park (Nebraska), Northfield Park (Ohio) and Hoosier Park (Indiana). He also provided the photo finish service at Scioto Downs (Ohio) prior to his arrival at Hoosier Park. His business still provides photo finish and winner’s circle shots for more than 70 fairs in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Nebraska, Kentucky, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and West Virginia.

Besides his parents, he is survived by four daughters, Gretchen Linscott, Abbe Linscott and her fiancé, Jim Lackmeyer, twins, Jamie Linscott and Katie (Joe) Starkey; his granddaughter, Taylor Janel Starkey; the mother of his children, Inez Stanley Linscott; a good friend and employee, Krisha Johnson; his sister, Jane Linscott and Pat Tabler; also surviving are many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date at Hoosier Park, Anderson.

Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens, Ohio. Family and friends are also invited to a gathering Saturday at 1 p.m. at the home of Inez Linscott, Amesville, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Tabler-Linscott Scholarship Fund, c/o Federal Hocking High School, P.O. Box 117, Stewart, OH 45778.

Albert E. Kearns

Feb. 14, 1928 - Jan. 2, 2007

Albert Earnest Kearns, 78, Anderson, died Jan. 2, 2007, at ManorCare Health Services in Anderson after an extended illness.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was the county highway superintendent for 10 years for the Indiana State Highway Department before retiring in 1993.

Survivors include his wife, Esther Anne (Jessup) Kearns; two sons, Richard Kearns and Michael Kearns; a daughter, Debbie Croom; a stepson, Gary Woodruff; a stepdaughter, Cathy Taylor; and several grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Parkview Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Jeff Floyd officiating. Cremation will take place.

Visitation will be one hour before service Saturday at the church.

Arrangements are being handled by Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service.

Julie R. Poynter

Oct. 8, 1965 - Dec. 28, 2005

MOUNT SUMMIT - Julie Robin (Hodson) Poynter, 40, died Dec. 28, 2005, at her residence.

She worked several years for G and G Oil Co. in Muncie, Dickerson Accounting, and Byers and Brown and Associates.

Survivors include her husband of nine years, Ken Richard Poynter; father and stepmother, James E. and Patsy Hodson; mother, Marilyn June Risen Johnson; a brother, James Rick (wife, Cindy) Hodson; a sister, Jama Renee (husband, Jesse) Kirksey; an aunt; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were conducted Dec. 31 at Macer-Hall Funeral Home, New Castle.

Kenneth R. Miller

June 28, 1942 - Jan. 1, 2006

LA FOLLETTE, Tenn. - Kenneth Ray Miller, 63, of LaFollette, Tenn., died Jan. 1, 2006, at his home.

He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and retired from General Motors in Anderson in 1992 where he worked in the boiler room.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma (Hammock) Miller; six children, Elaine Draise, Lisa Marino, Kim Cook, Kelly Abston, Richard McCullah and Ronald Paul; his mother: Neva Miller; a sister, Helen (husband, Guy "Pete" ) Rains; a brother, Roger (wife, Connie) Miller of Anderson; 16 grandchildren; and several nieces and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his father: James Roy Miller and a brother: Robert Gale Miller.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Brothers Larrell Boling and Tim York officiating. Military services will be held by the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery-Legion Hill. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

James R. Leach

Jan. 14, 1934 - Jan. 3, 2006

FAIRMOUNT - James R. Leach, 71, died Jan. 3, 2006, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.

He was born on Jan. 14, 1934 on the family farm, the son of Harold and Dorothy (Stockdale) Leach, and resided on the farm that had been in his family for more than 100 years. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956. He graduated from Gaston High School in 1952. He retired from farming in 1992 and was the Outstanding Young Farmer of 1964. He was a member of the Grant United Methodist Church where he served in several offices. He was a member of the Fowlerton Lions Club receiving the Melvin Jones Award in 2000-2001 and held several offices. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending their sporting events.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Dorothy Leach, whom he married Dec. 30, 1956, in Fairmount; three daughters, Cindy Skinner, Lynnette (Mike) Taylor and Linda; and three grandchildren, Nicole, Carly and Will.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Armes-Hunt Funeral Home, 415 S. Main St., Fairmount, with Dr. Robert Jackson officiating. Interment will be in Matthews Cemetery in Matthews.

Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grant United Methodist Church, 11018 E. 1100 S, Fairmount, IN 46928.

Wayne L. Barnett

May 21, 1976 - Jan. 3, 2006

ALEXANDRIA - Wayne Lee Barnett, 29, Alexandria, died Jan. 3, 2006, at Vernon Manor Children’s Home in Wabash after having been ill since birth.

Survivors include his parents, R. Wayne and Mary (Kettery) Barnett; three sisters, Tammy (Eric) Amick, Kristy (Travis) Johnson and Diana (Brian) Knopp; six nephews; a niece; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Private graveside services will be held at Park View Cemetery, Alexandria, at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are being made through Owens Funeral Home in Alexandria.

James Dayton

FAIRMOUNT - James Dayton, 78, of Fairmount, died Jan. 4, 2006, at his residence.

He was employed by Trinidad Roofing Co.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria (Madison) Dayton; two daughters, Shelly (George) Kequam and Susan (Ronnie) Lawson; and three sons, James Allen Dayton, Patrick Dayton and James Edward Dayton.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Armes-Hunt Funeral Home, 415 S. Main St., Fairmount, with the Rev. James McConnell officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Fairmount.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Matthew Lawler

Feb. 6, 1949 - Jan. 4, 2006

Matthew "Zeb" Lawler, 56, Anderson, died Jan. 4, 2006, at his daughter’s residence.

He was born Feb. 6, 1949, in Anderson, and was a lifelong Anderson resident. He attended Anderson Apprentice School and graduated in June of 1975. He then graduated from Indiana University School of Business on Dec. 31, 1984. He graduated from Ball State University with a master of business administration on May 19, 1988.

He was first employed as a millwright, then went to work for Delco Remy America for 32 years before retiring in 2000. He taught computer and accounting classes at Indiana Business College. Most recently, he co-founded CMN Electric Business.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed fishing and golfing.

Survivors include three children, Marla Marie and Dawn "Newt" and husband David Hamilton, all of Anderson, and Brenda and husband Barry Krieg of Indianapolis; two brothers, Titus Lee Lawler Sr. of Muncie, and Timothy "Tim" Lawler of Anderson; four sisters, Ruth L. "Joan" Britt, Mary "Mae" Lawler, Ruby Debro and Eula Welch, all of Anderson; five grandchildren, Cierra Newsom, and Mayla and Nyla Hamilton, all of Anderson, and Brandon & Braxton Krieg, both of Indianapolis; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; an aunt, Ruby Barton of Many, La.; two sisters-in-law, Elaine and Bernice Blackmon; four brothers-in-law, Otis, Billy, James and John Blackmon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Katherine (Sweet) Lawler; wife, Mae Edith Lawler, whom he married on Sept. 5, 1969, died on June 3, 1995; and a brother, Bartholomew "Bart" Lawler Sr.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert Williams of the church officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Second Harvest Food Bank or any local charity to help children in need.

Larry R. Hall

April 29, 1949 - Jan. 4, 2006

Larry R. Hall, 56, Anderson, died Jan. 4, 2006, at Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie, after an extended illness.

He was born April 29, 1949, in Anderson, and resided in Anderson all of his life. He retired from General Motors after 30 years of service, working at Fort Wayne Truck & Bus, Delco Remy and Guide Lamp.

He was a 1967 graduate of Highland High School.

He attended Living Water Community Church in Pendleton. He was an avid NASCAR fan, loved camping and fishing and was a former Adams Township Volunteer fireman.

He is survived by his two sons, Steven and wife Christy Hall of Markleville, and Marcus and wife Charity Hall of Poland; sister, Darlene Utt of Spiceland; grandchildren, Nicolas Hall, Ragan Erb, Chloe Hall, Ryley Hall and Aspen Hall; nieces, Jenni Sander and Lacee Utt of Spiceland; and his cat, Beasley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kelley and Sarah Louise (Pruitt) Hall; and a brother-in-law, Harold E. Utt Jr.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson, with the Revs. Fred Stevens and Tom Farling officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the South Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to South Henry Dollars for Scholars.

Ralph M. Jones

Feb. 4, 1933 - Jan. 7, 2007

FRANKTON - Ralph M. Jones, 73, Frankton, died Jan. 7, 2007, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Survivors include two sons, Alan Jones of Alexandria, and Bryan Jones of Elwood; two daughters, Renee Gentry of Middletown, and Kelly Jones of Frankton; three sisters, Joyce Jones, Ruby Tomlinson and Jean Moore of Morgantown; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Marvin S. Hicks Funeral Home Chapel with Brothers Bill Sloan and Leroy Hammonds officiating. Burial will be in Perdue Cemetery.

Etta L. Faust

March 7, 1916 - Jan. 6, 2007

Etta Lorraine (Warren) Faust, 90, Anderson, died Jan. 6, 2007, at St. John’s Medical Center.

She had been a cook for Community Hospital.

Survivors include five children, Helen and Charles Chandler, Barbara Lemons, Nancy and Kenny Lowery, Judy Woods, and Linda and Gerald Whiteaker; two brothers, Ronald and Mary Warren, and Dick and Jill Warren; a sister, Thelma and Russell Miller; 33 grandchildren; 69 great- grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service officiated by her family. Burial will be in Grovelawn Cemetery in Pendleton.

Visitation will be one hour before service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Police Christmas Fund for Children.
