Vernon L. Gardner

November 27, 2004

PLYMOUTH - Vernon L. "Dusty" Gardner, 78, a lifetime Marshall County resident living at 4710 Deborah Lane, Plymouth, since 1962, has died. Vern died at 4:40 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, in Pilgrim Manor Care Center, Plymouth. He suffered from a cancer-related illness and was a victim of Alzheimer's Disease for the past year.

Born in Argos on Sept. 9, 1926, the son of Ben I. and Blanche Sponseller Gardner. He attended Argos schools.

Vern served in the Korean Conflict from September 1950 through June 1952. A heavy equipment operator, he was a Sgt. T4 with the 323rd Engineers and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars.

On May 23, 1953, Vern and Alice M. Pelkey were married in Hamlet, Ind. Alice died on Dec. 27, 1985.

A lifetime heavy equipment operator, Vern worked for Midwest Operating Engineers, Union Local 150. He worked on numerous construction projects throughout this area, including the building of new U.S. 30 and 31. He worked as far away as New York State following an extremely dangerous winter storm to help re-open highways closed due to heavy snow.

He loved fishing and collecting antiques, especially still banks. He enjoyed traveling and following his retirement, he was frequently off on camping trips. An NBA fan, Michael Jordan was one of his favorite players.

A member of the National Rifle Association, the Knox Masonic Lodge #639, the V.F.W. #1162, Vern also was a member of the Square Club, a camping organization he came to truly enjoy.

Vern is survived by a daughter and a son. His daughter, a resident of Etna Green is Rebecca Sue Gardner and his son, now living in Plymouth, is Kevin J. Gardner.

Four grandchildren and their spouses also survive. They are: Pfc. Michael Wilcox serving in Baghdad and his wife, Amanda; Brad and Stephanie Wilcox, Atwood and Matthew Wilcox and Allyson Gardner, both of Etna Green. Two great-grandchildren survive as well. They are Braxton and Shaylin Wilcox. A brother, Harold and his wife, Velma Gardner of Argos, also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his spouse.

Visitation will be in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004. Masonic Lodge Memorial Rites will be held at 7:30 p.m. that evening in the funeral home.

Funeral services for Vern will be held in the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004.

The V.F.W. Marshall Co. Post 1162 will provide military graveside honors at Fairmount Cemetery, Plymouth.

Memorial gifts may be made in Vern's memory to the Alzheimer's Research Fund or the American Cancer Association.

Wayne R. Nelson

November 26, 2004

PLYMOUTH - Wayne R. Nelson, 88, of 103 South Liberty Street, Plymouth, passed away Friday, Nov. 26, 2004 at Miller's Merry Manor, Walkerton.

He was born on Dec. 27, 1915, in Plymouth, to Walter and Stella (Fletcher) Nelson. Wayne and Mildred Albert were married on April 10,1937 and had been married for 67 years.

Wayne was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Plymouth, and was the Chairman of the Board for 25 years. He started working for People's Drug store making sodas. When he retired he owned the People's Drug Store building and had worked there for 50 years. Wayne and Mildred then bought Powell's Hardware and named it Nelson Hardware. They owned and ran the business for a year. Wayne was a gardener and loved taking care of his flower and vegetable gardens. He also enjoyed fishing.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Mildred; their daughters, Chris and Don Marohn and Rhonda and Robert Arvesen, Jr. of Plymouth; his brothers, Wendell and Treva Nelson and Gordon Nelson, of Plymouth; his sisters, Mary Girten, Joan and Fred Wolff, Rosemarie Campbell, and Helen (Mick) Nelson all of Plymouth. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Jennifer DeMont of Plymouth, Mike and Theresa Arvesen of Indianapolis, Mandy and Chad Kinney of Plymouth, Jason and Matt Arvesen of Plymouth, and Dan and Genie Marohn of Plymouth. He was preceded in death by his brother, James.

Services will be held Monday, Nov. 29, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at the Van Gilder Funeral Home in Plymouth, with the Rev. William Kaster officiating. Burial will be in New Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth.

The family requests that memorial contributions be given to Trinity United Methodist Church or to the choice of the donor.

Kathleen J. Susits

November 27, 2004

ARGOS - Kathleen J. Susits, 58, of Argos, died Saturday, Nov. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at her home. She had been in failing health since March of this year.

Kathleen was born on July 29, 1946 in Mishawaka to Fabian and Sarah Kathleen Lyvers Susits, Jr. She had lived most of her life in this community coming from Mishawaka.

She was a secretary at Dodge Mfg. of MIshawaka for a number of years and she later worked for Electracom, Inc. in Bourbon for 13 years. She also was a homemaker. She enjoyed cross-stitching and gardening.

She is survived by her mother, Sarah Kathleen Susits; two brothers, William (Hilda) Susits, Daphne, Ala. and Fabian (Candy) Susits, III, Argos; and two nieces, Deanne Youngblood, Texas and Ashley Trawick, Alabama.

She was preceded in death by her father Fabian Susits, Jr. on Jan. 22, 1992.

Private family services will be held.

Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery, Argos.

Memorials may be made to the Marshall County Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the Grossman Funeral Home.

B. Elaine Clayton

November 26, 2004

PLYMOUTH - B. Elaine Clayton, 71, of Plymouth, died Friday, Nov. 26 at Miller's Merry Manor, Plymouth.

She is survived by a daughter, Leslie Resendez and a sister, Beverly J. Baltes, Plymouth.

There will be no visitation.

Graveside services will be Monday, Nov. 29 at 1 p.m. at Tippecanoe Cemetery, 331 South.

Memorials may be made to the Marshall County Hospice.

Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Sue Ellen Grable

November 25, 2004

MILWAUKEE - Sue Ellen Grable, 52, of Milwaukee, died Thursday, Nov. 25 at her mother and stepfather's home following a long battle with cancer.

She was born in Plymouth and was a 1971 graduate of Plymouth High School.

She is survived by a daughter, Jennifer J. (Brad) Johnson, Fort Wayne; a son, Dennis E. Grable, II, Fort Wayne; her mother and stepfather, Mary E. and David Read, Milwaukee; a sister, Judy (Patrick) Fuller, Warsaw; a brother, David K. Long, Hollywood, Fla.; and a stepdaughter, Denise (Tim) Hearld, Larwill.

Visitation is Tuesday, Nov. 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.

Funeral services are Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Phil Blake officiating. The committal service and burial will be at 11 a.m. Dec. 1 in the Bremen Cemetery, Bremen.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Lura M. Holderman

November 29, 2004

ARGOS - Lura M. Holderman, 73, in failing health the past several years, died at 8:04 p.m. on Monday, November 29, 2004, at her residence, 14389 Maple Rd., Argos, where she had lived for over 35 years.

Lura was born at the Plymouth home of her parents, Roy E. and Ruth E. Bowdy Ringer, on July 27, 1931. She graduated from Plymouth High School with the class of 1949.

On November 26, 1953, in Etna Green, Ind., Lura and Richard W. Holderman were married. Last week, the couple celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary. Together they enjoyed traveling and winters spent in Riverview, Florida.

A homemaker, she was multi-talented. She made afghans for everyone in the family. She was able to play many instruments by ear especially the organ and accordion entertaining her family and friends. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, ceramics and vegetable and flower gardening, making many flower arrangements for her church altar from her well tended garden.

In addition to her loving husband, Lura is survived by their three daughters and two sons. They and their spouses are: Linda S. and Annis Crum, Argos; Cindy L. and Glenn Leonard, Bourbon; Patti L. and Terry Honeycutt, Monterey; Steven K. and Debbie Holderman, Augusta Kansas; and Terry L. Holderman, Plymouth.

Eight grandchildren also survive. They are: Linda's children, Mandy, Lisa and Mitchell; Cindy's children Krissa and Melissa; Patti's children, Kyle, Kevin and Jeffrey. She also treasured her two great grandsons, Derek and Christopher.

A brother Wayne and Debbie Ringer of Plymouth, survive as well.

Lura was preceded in death by her parents.

Friends will be welcomed by Lura's family on Thursday, December 2, 2004, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.

Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Mark Fishburn, pastor of the Argos Bible Church, will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 3, 2004, in the funeral home.

Burial will be in New Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth.

Memorials in Lura's memory may be made to either the American Diabetic or Cancer Societies.

Helen Murphy

November 29, 2004

Helen Marie Murphy, 75, formerly of Plymouth, died Nov. 29 at Southfield Village, in South Bend, following an extended illness.

She was born on April 20, 1929, to John Edward and Bertha Ellen (Hasley) Davis in the township of Newport, Ohio where she lived most of her youth. As a teenager, she moved to Culver, Ind., to live with her brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. George and Crystal Davis.

She graduated from Culver High School in 1947. On Nov. 4, 1950, she married Leo W. Murphy, of Plymouth, who preceded her in death in 1989.

Helen was a homemaker, mother and miracle worker who dedicated her life to supporting her family and their lives.

She is survived by a daughter, Karen Murphy Schefmeyer (Donald), of South Bend; a son, Leo W. Murphy, Jr. (Christine) of Chicago; a grandson, Thomas, of Chicago; two sisters, Mable Minor and Sylvia Ohmer, both of Newport, Ohio, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, George and Clifford; and two sisters, Bessie Bell and Ethel Mae Pritchett.

In the early 50s, Helen and her husband lived in Germany while he was in the Army. Later, they settled north of Plymouth and started a small Christmas tree farm located on Old Michigan Road, just north of the outdoor theater. She was an avid gardener and became an expert in hostas, day lilies and daffodils. Each spring her yard was filled with thousands and thousands of daffodils.

She was a master gardener and a life-time member of Fernwood Nature Center. She also enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling throughout the US and Europe.

On Friday, visitation will be 10-11 a.m. and services at 11 a.m. at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan, Plymouth. Family and friends are invited to a noon luncheon at Christo's Banquet Center, 830 Lincolnway East, Plymouth. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Fernwood, 13988 Range Line Rd., Niles, MI 49120.

Kenneth C. Horn, Sr.

November 29, 2004

PLYMOUTH - Kenneth "Kenny" C. Horn, Sr., 74, living at 13280 W. 4B Rd., Plymouth, died, following an extended illness, in Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis at 12:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 29, 2004.

Kenny lived his whole life in Plymouth. In addition to proudly serving his country, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed by them all.

Born in Plymouth on Jan. 12, 1930, Kenny was the son of Ivan and Hazel Holmes Horn. He graduated from Plymouth High School with the class of 1948 and from Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., in 1952.

Kenny was in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. As a First Lieut., he served his country in the Korean Conflict as an Executive Office for the 7th Calvary.

On Nov. 27, 1966, Kenny and Rose Mary Snyder were married in the Trinity United Methodist Church, Plymouth.

For 25 years, from 1967 to 1992, Kenny worked at Conrail as a block operator for various towers in northern Indiana.

After his retirement, he stayed active in a number of organizations.

He was a lifetime member of VFW Marshall County Post 1162 and for many years he served on the Honor Guard giving tribute to fallen comrades. He also was a member of the Eagles, the Moose and the American Legion Post #27.

He served as Post Commander of Plymouth's VFW organization from 1996 to 2003. During this time, he would volunteer and cook lunches for the members, something he continued up until the last two months when he became ill.

He enjoyed traveling and he and his loving wife, Rose Mary, took many trips across the country. He loved going to the baseball and softball games of his grandchildren to cheer their athletic activities on the ball diamonds.

Kenny is survived by his wife and their three children. They, and their spouses are: Kenneth C. and Carrie Horn, Jr., Plymouth; Anne M. and Donnie Overmyer, Bremen; and Michael G. and Kristina Horn, Plymouth. Four grandchildren also survive. They are Taiylor Horn, Zackery Horn, Karson Doll and Cord Doll. A brother, Larry and Cathy Horn, Bremen and a sister Joyce Horn, Plymouth, together with many nieces and nephews, survive as well.

Kenny was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father-in-law: Clara and Gordon Snyder and a sister, Elaine M. Horn.

Friends will be welcomed by Kenny's family on Wednesday, Dec. 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.

Funeral services in the funeral home will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 2. The Rev. William Kaster, pastor of the Trinity United Methodist Church where Kenny was a member, will officiate.

Military graveside rites provided by the Plymouth VFW #1162 will accompany burial in Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.

Memorials to Kenny's life and service may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church, the Cancer Society, the V.F.W. #1162 or the American Diabetes Association.
