Sylvia L. Hammond

Sylvia L. Hammond, 73, Delphi, died at 1:38 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, in Monticello Assisted Living and Healthcare Center.

Born Oct. 30, 1935, in Monon, she was the daughter of James Virgil and Bonnie Harris Wheeldon. On March 21, 1952, in Delphi, she was married to Jack Norman Hammond, who preceded in death April 10, 2002.

Surviving are two daughters, Betty Cummings and her husband, Ron, Delphi, and Linda D. Curtis and her husband, Michael, Logansport; two sons, Jack N. Hammond Jr. and his wife, Teri, Reynolds, and Robert Hammond and Amy Girton, Delphi; five brothers, John Wheeldon, Delphi, Thomas Virgil Wheeldon and his wife, Peachy, Monon, Dave Wheeldon and his wife, Dixie, Lafayette, Wayne Wheeldon and his wife, Red, Monticello, and Ted Wheeldon and his wife, Dottie, Georgia; two sisters, Thelma Collard, Monticello, and Colleen Winger and her husband, Roger, Wolcott; and her grandchildren, Stephan and Leslie Maly, Michael Allan Curtis II, Misty Dawn Hammond and Dana Mishelle Simpson.

She was preceded in death by one grandson, Kenneth Heath Hammond, and one granddaughter, Holly Lynn Fahrner.

No services are planned at this time. Private burial will be in Spring Creek Cemetery.

Fisher Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

James E. ‘Jim’ Walls

Services for James E. “Jim” Walls, 79, Logansport, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Fisher Funeral Chapel.

He died at 4:25 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, in the Sycamore Village Health Care Golden Living Center in Kokomo.

Born June 21, 1928, in Logansport, he was the son of Bert and Irma Viola Toothman Walls.

On Sept. 3, 1961, in Logansport, he was married to Carolyn Joanne Clear, who survives.

Jim worked on the railroad for nine years. He had worked at the former Captain Logan Hotel, and for more than 20 years, he had worked at the St. Joseph Hospital laundry department.

He was a member of the Bethel Temple, and loved to mow and do yard work and gardening. He also loved to go fishing. Jim was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

Surviving with his wife are three daughters, Agnes Crockett, Melvindale, Mich., and Diana Rogers and Joanne Reed, both of Logansport; three sons, Dale Walls and James Walls, both of Logansport, and Richards Walls, Lafayette; two sisters, Alice Tocco and Mary Cramer, both of Logansport; 14 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

His parents, one brother and one sister preceded him in death.

The Rev. Buddy Holder will officiate at the service. Friends may call one hour before the services. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the James Walls family fund.

Craig A. Williams

Craig A. Williams, 48, Galveston died at 5:05 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, in Howard Regional Health System, Kokomo.

Born June 4, 1959, in Logansport, he was the son of Thomas E. and Shirley A. Roberts Williams, who survive.

Craig was a 1977 Lewis Cass High School graduate.

He had formerly worked for Les Hardin and Danny Winegardner Construction Companies.

Surviving are one daughter, Billie Jo Williams, Indianapolis; parents, Thomas E. and Shirley A. Williams, Galveston; and two brothers, Mark E. Williams, Kokomo, and Darrel E. Williams, Galveston.

There will be no services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Marocco Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Dan J. Regan
05/20/1914 - 5/29/2008

Graveside and Masonic Services for Dan J. Regan, 94 of Logansport will be at 12:00 Noon Saturday June 7, 2008 at Mt. Hope Cemetery.

He passed away at 4:00 a.m. Thursday May 29, 2008 at Hendricks Regional Hospital in Danville, Indiana after an extended illness.

Born on May 20, 1914 in Lexington, Kentucky, he was the son of the late John and Bessie (Sullivan) Regan. On August 15, 1936 he married Geraldine T. Fisher and she preceded him in death on April 25, 1996.

Dan was a Burnettsville High School Graduate who formerly was employed at Allisons Transmission in Indianapolis and retired in 1974 from General Tire in Logansport as Superintendant of Maintenance after 22 years.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Elks, Moose and Eagles Lodges all of Logansport and a 69 year member of the Royal Center Masonic Lodge F & AM #585.

Dan was known as “Gampy” by all who loved him, and he never met a stranger. His passions were his grandchildren and caring for his two dogs, Marley and Bailey.

Survivors include two daughters, Lori Hiatt (Clayton Clark) of Plainfield and Cheryl Sharps (Paul) of Albuquerque, New Mexico, one son Dan J. Regan, Jr. (Doris) of Logansport, one brother Charles Vanalst of Burnettsville , two sister Margaret Flowers of Logansport and Dorothy Vanalst of Burnettsville,8 grandchildren, Jimmy Hiatt (Lelani Claiborne), Jennifer Hiatt (Kevin Murphy), Julie Jones (Steve), Christopher Sharps, Meredith Sharps and Jeff, Eric (Sonya) and Michael Regan, 5 great grandchildren, Maddox Hiatt, Samantha Jones, Jarret, Beau and Mathias Regan.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and 11 brothers and sisters.

Pastor Bill Shannon will officiate at the service.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Indiana Masonic Home.

Linda M. Almos
10/26/1955 - 6/9/2008

Services for Linda M. Almos, 52 of Logansport will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday June 13, 2008 at Marocco Funeral Chapel, Logansport.

She went home to be with the Lord at 10:55 p.m. Monday June 9, 2008 at Parkview Health Hospital in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

Born October 26, 1955 in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of David and Helen (O’Brian) Manus, they survive.

Linda’s greatest passion was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, Michael Almos of Cary, North Carolina, three daughters, Sherry Lucas (David Cunningham) of Peru, Maria Almos (James Peterson) of Logansport and Tara Leahy of Lafayette, Parents, David and Helen Manus of Logansport, one brother, Terry Manus of Logansport, one sister, Patti Waye-Benson (Gary) of Cary, North Carolina, 9 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Richard Manus and one granddaughter Taylor Lucas.

Friends may call from 4-6 p.m. Thursday June 12, 2008 at Marocco Funeral Chapel and 1 hour prior to the service.

Pastor Andy Weil will officiate at the service and burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Logansport.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Mental Health Association of Cass County, 412 12th St., Logansport, Indiana 46947.

Vivian M. Porter

BLOOMINGTON - Memorial services will be held at a later date for Vivian M. Porter, 95, Bloomington.

She died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, in Owen Valley Health Campus in Spencer.

Born Dec. 9, 1913, in Howard County, she was the daughter of Harley and Eva Cooper Barber.

She worked for many government and service agencies including the Cass County treasurer, Hoosier National Forest, the Boy Scouts of America and the Logansport YMCA. She was a longtime member of Broadway United Methodist Church and attended First United Methodist Church in Bloomington.

A lifelong Republican, she contributed many hours of service to the political process in Cass County. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Jim Jeffries, Bloomington; two grandchildren, Jennifer Jeffries Barnhouse and James Porter Jeffries; and two great-grandchildren, Emory Barnhouse and Oliver Barnhouse.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herb Porter. in 1960; one son, Thomas Porter; and one brother, William Barber.

Burial will be private in Mount Hope Cemetery in Logansport.

Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington is in charge of arrangements.

Ovella Jayne ‘Mims’ Covington

GEORGETOWN, Ill. - A celebration of life for Ovella Jayne “Mims” Covington, 81, Georgetown, Ill., formerly of Logansport, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Sunset’s Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home.

She passed away at 8:45 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, in her home.

Born Sept. 19, 1926, in Burdett, Ark., she was the daughter of Lucian and Annie Pearl Franks Tomlin, both deceased. She was married Aug. 5, 1960, in Logansport, to Harry J. Covington I, who preceded in death on May 5, 1990.

Mims was a nurse and worked for Logansport State Hospital for more than 33 years. She was an avid sports fan of the New England Patriots and also of Chicago Cubs baseball. She loved gardening and spending time with her family, especially her grandkids, and was a very giving person. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those who will miss her include her daughter, Nancy Ann Covington, Georgetown, Ill.; her grandchildren, Ed and Janis Carlock, Logansport, Carla and Tom Kohl, Georgetown, Ill., Harry and Darlene Covington II, Olivet, Ill., and Ronald and Sherry Clark, and Maria and Johnny Collins, all of Georgetown, Ill.; her great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Alysha, Daniel, Jesse, Joshua, Wyatt, Amber, Tisha, Cheyenne, Cassandra, Johnathon, Trinity, Chase and Abani; her two great-great-grandchildren, Devin and Michael; her sisters, Beatrice Dowell, Arkansas, Molly and Grant Leneaux, Nevada, and Jessie and Renee McCurdy, Pennsylvania; and her two special nieces, Joyce and Jerry Peterson, Indiana, and Debbie and Jerry Burns, Florida.

Two sons, Jerry and Jack Covington; three sisters; three brothers; and her grandson, Shaun Covington, preceded her in death.

Her grandson, Harry Covington II, will officiate the service. Burial will be in Ever-Rest Memorial Park in Logansport.

Friends may call one hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be given in her name to Carle Hospice Program, 206A W. Anthony Dr., Champaign IL 61822.

John Rodney Hettinger

Services for John Rodney Hettinger, 58, Georgetown, Logansport, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Kroeger Funeral Home.

He died at 9:35 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, in his home.

He was born on March 25, 1949, in Star City, to John F. and Wilma Jean Moss Hettinger.

He was married to Linda Wilson Hettinger for six years, and they were together for 27.

John was a high school graduate through the Marine Corps. He served his country in Vietnam for three and a half years, earning the Purple Heart and Silver Star.

John worked for Chrysler in Indianapolis for six years and at Carlisle Industrial Brake and Friction for 20 years, before his battle with cancer.

He loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved watching NASCAR racing and he was a Colts fan.

Surviving are his wife, Linda, Georgetown; one daughter, Pamela Suzanne Babers and her husband, Alex II, Friendswood, Texas; one son, Jeffrey Paul Hettinger, Slidell, La.; three granddaughters, Kayla Brooke McClory, Jessica Renee McClory and Alexis Louise Babers, all of Friendswood, Texas; one grandson, Alex Lewis Babers III, Friendswood, Texas; two sisters, Linda Downs and her daughter, Tammy Downs, and Joy Hamilton, all of Logansport; five half-brothers, Jay Downs and his wife, Janiene, Terry Downs, and Kent Downs, all of Logansport, Bill Downs, San Diego, Calif., and Kevin Downs; one stepsister, Debby Birnell and her husband, Albert, Logansport; one stepbrother, John E. Hettinger, Logansport; and his stepmother, Evelyn Hettinger, Logansport.

At age 14, he acquired what he called sisters, Bonnie Long and her husband, Larry, and Pam Wilson and her husband, Jack, all of Florida.

John had three brothers-in-law, Richard Elburn and his wife, Joyce and their son, Brian David, all of Abilene, Kansas; Jack Elburn, Lafayette; and Kelly Elburn and his wife, Brenda, and Andrew and Dillin Elburn (two special nephews), all of Royal Center.

Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He had one special friend, Charlie Stapleton, and his wife, Sue, and family, Sheridan.

Preceding in death were his mother, father and Virginia Shoemaker, who he called mom. Also preceding were uncles, Bob Moss, Roy Moss and Wayne Moss; and grandparents, Rodney and Ruth Moss.

Joshua Bault will officiate. Burial, with full military rites, will be in Ever-Rest Memorial Park.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday and one hour before services Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Jerry J. Reed

ROCHESTER - Services for Jerry J. Reed, 74, Rochester, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Good Family Funeral Home.

He died at 7:20 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, in his residence.

Pastor Phil Pratt will officiate at the services. Burial will be in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Hospice of Fulton County.

Mary K. Sines Kerker

DELPHI - Services for Mary K. Sines Kerker, 79, formerly Delphi, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Abbott Funeral Home.

She died at 6:29 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette.

The Rev. Bill McLean will officiate at the services. Burial will be in the IOOF Memorial Gardens, Pittsburg.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of services Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Elizabeth Healthcare resident fund.

Charles ‘Dave’ Wicker

KEWANNA - Graveside services for Charles “Dave” Wicker, 56, Lake Bruce, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Lake Bruce.

He died at 1:40 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, in Pulaski Memorial Hospital in Winamac.

Born in Rensselaer, he was the son of the late Leland and Ruby Selby Wicker. On Nov. 4, 2006, he was married to Jennifer L. McIntire, who survives.

Surviving with his wife are their children, Hunter and Hanna Wicker, Lake Bruce, sons, Joshua Wicker and Michael David Trosper, and daughter, Jaime Wicker; sisters, Linda Gross, Rochester, and Bobbie Sellers and husband, Steve, Momence, Ill.; brothers, Kevin Wicker and wife, Nancy, Rochester, and Danny Wicker and wife, Amanda, Delong; and five grandchildren.

Pastor Mac Howard will officiate the service.

Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at Harrison-Metzger & Rans Funeral Homes, 123 E. Main St., Kewanna.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family in care of the funeral home.
