Ruth Emily Lapierre

Ruth Emily Lapierre, 84, of Logansport, died at 7:30 a.m. today in Miller’s Merry Manor.

Arrangements are pending at Kroeger Funeral Home.

Helen R. Tobin

Services for Helen R. Tobin, 83, of 865N 525E, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Fisher Funeral Chapel.

Mrs. Tobin died at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 1999, in Logansport Memorial Hospital.

Born July 18, 1915, in Elwood, she was the daughter of William and Mable Bambrough Richardson. In Gaston, she was married to Charles Tobin, who died Sept. 9, 1973.

A homemaker, Mrs. Tobin was employed at Indiana Finance Center for five years.

Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn Fields, Logansport, and Linda Harris, Thomasville, Ga.; one brother, David Richardson, Anderson; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

One son, Marvin Tobin, preceded in death.

The Rev. David Ylvisakercq will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery, Matthews.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral chapel.

William ‘Art’ Smith

KEWANNA -- Services for William "Art" Smith, 50, of Kewanna, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Ann Catholic Church.

Mr. Smith died at 4:10 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 1999, at his residence.

Born May 6, 1948, in Chicago, he was the son of William C. and Marie Dress Smith. On March 27, 1971, he was married in Chicago to Mary Ann Josses, who survives.

Formerly of Chicago, Mr. Smith had been a U.S. Mail Carrier for the Irving Park Branch in Chicago.

He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2978.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he had served from 1969 to 1970 in the Vietnam War, working as a chef and in transportation.

He was a graduate of Lakeview High School, Chicago.

Also surviving are his mother, Margie Smith, Chicago; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Janine Smith, Kewanna; one daughter, Amy Marie Smith, Chicago; one brother, Joseph Smith, Linderhurst, Ill.; one sister, Cindy Ward, Chicago; one granddaughter, Taylor Marie Smith; one grandson, Michael Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

One son, his father and father-in-law preceded in death.

Father Alan Cox will officiate at the services. Burial, with military rites, will be in IOOF Cemetery, Rochester.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday in Harrison-Metzger Funeral Home, Kewanna Chapel, where there will be a scripture service at 7 p.m. Monday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pulaski County Hospice.

"GONE FISHING"

Marilyn C. Hiatt

Services for Marilyn C. Hiatt, 65, of Logansport, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Kroeger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hiatt died at 11:55 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 1999, in Logansport Memorial Hospital.

Born March 5,1934, in Cass County, she was the daughter of George W. and Mary Ann Benedict. On May 5,1970, she was married in Logansport to Charles W. Hiatt, who survives.

Mrs. Hiatt had been employed at RBM Manufacturing. She also had been the manager of the former Harvest House Restaurant at the Logansport Mall for 10 years.

Also surviving are one son, Dennis Benedict, Mesa, Ariz; two stepsons, Charles Hiatt Jr., Albion, Mich., and John Hiatt, Logansport; three stepdaughters, Gerri Erbaugh, Brookston, Joni Eatmon, Logansport; and Sarah Barton, Collierville, Tenn.; two sisters, Marcella Grable, Twelve Mile, and Judy Costello, Kalamazoo, Mich.; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Two grandchildren, two brothers and one sister preceded in death.

Burial will be in Ever-Rest Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home.

Louise Hylton

Services for Louise Hylton, 78, formerly of Route 2, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in McCloskey-Hamilton-Gundrum Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hylton died at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 1999, in Miller’s Merry Manor.

Born Dec. 6, 1920, in Cass County, she was the daughter of Elmer and Julia Harper Deitrich.

Mrs. Hylton retired from The Singer Company. She also had worked as an auditor for the Holiday Inn and Super 8.

She attended Ninth Street Christian Church and was a member of Clymer’s United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Hylton was a 50-year member of Fidelity Chapter #58, Order of Eastern Star, and was a former member of Double Dozen Extension Homemaker’s Club.

Surviving are one daughter, Dorinda Hylton, Logansport; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Margie Hylton, Walton, and William and Donna Hylton, Camden; one sister, Margaret Deitrich Miller and her husband, Robert Robin Wolf, Logansport; five grandchildren, Diana Berkshire and Monica Hylton, both of Camden, Gary Hylton, Logansport, Kevin Hylton, Brookston, and Corey Hylton, Walton; and four great-grandchildren, Blake Hylton, Nathan Berkshire, and Josh and Jessica James.

One son, Kenneth Dean Hylton, preceded in death.

The Rev. James Beaumont will officiate at the services. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home, where an Eastern Star service will be held at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ninth Street Christian Church.

William Stewart

WINAMAC -- William Stewart, 70, Route 2, died at 2:50 a.m. today in St. Mary Medical Center, Hobart.

Arrangements are pending at Frain Mortuary.

Louise Anna Mikesell

ROCHESTER -- Services for Louise Anna Mikesell, 89, of Miller’s Merry Manor, Peru, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Zimmerman Family Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mikesell, formerly of Rochester, died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 1999, in Dukes Memorial Hospital, Peru.

Pastor Brian Sewell will officiate at the services. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Rockfield.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and one hour before services Saturday in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Gene L. Hammond

AKRON -- Services for Gene L. Hammond, 74, of 308 Rural St., will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Hartzler Funeral Home.

Mr. Hammond died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 1999, in Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo, Mich., as the result of injuries he sustained in an ultralight aircraft accident in Elkhart County.

Pastor Jeff Hawkins will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Akron Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home.

Robert Mills Scott

KEWANNA -- Services for Robert Mills Scott, 79, of Lake Bruce, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Harrison-Metzger Funeral Home, Kewanna Chapel.

Mr. Scott died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, in Valley Hospital, Las Vegas, Nev.

Born Sept. 23, 1919, in Kewanna, he was the son of Frank S. and Georgi Mills Scott. On March 31, 1943, he was married at Camp Davis, Wilmington, N.C., to Arlene Billerbeck, of Winamac, who survives.

A veteran of the U.S. Army and Air Corps, he had served during World War II.

Mr. Scott, a lifelong resident of Kewanna and Lake Bruce, spent his winters in Las Vegas.

For over 30 years, he owned and operated his family’s business, Scott’s Toggery, which was established in the early 1900s. In 1958, he opened Bo’s Marina, which has become one of the oldest Evinrude dealers in the United States. Mr. Scott was a licensed real estate agent for over 20 years, and he and his son, Robert M. Scott, opened Rob Scott Realty in Las Vegas.

He was a 1937 graduate of Kewanna High School.

Mr. Scott was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at Indiana University, Bloomington, and he belonged to Rochester Lodge #75, F&AM, Order of Eastern Star, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite of South Bend, Zelzah Temple, Las Vegas, the American Legion and the Moose Lodge. He was a sponsor of Ducks Unlimited and Turkeys Unlimited, was a charter member of the Elks and a #9 member of the Indiana Sheriffs’ Association. He also was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Also surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Robert "Bo" and Sally Scott, Las Vegas; grandson, Shane Scott, and his fiancŽ, Liza Maebara, Las Vegas; brother-in-law, Herbert Billerbeck, and his wife, Sheri, Las Vegas; nieces, Gayle Higgins, Ellettsville, and Candy Orndorff, Melbourne, Fla.; nephews, Hal Billerbeck, Orlando, Fla., Berry Walden, Everett, Wash., and Chad Billerbeck, Trent Billerbeck and Ryan Butler, all of Las Vegas; and two great-nephews and three great-nieces of Indiana and Florida.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and after 8 a.m. Monday in the funeral home, where Masonic services will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday. Visitation also will be held today at Palm Mortuary, Las Vegas.

The Revs. Bob Story and Jerry Gibson will officiate at the services. Burial, with military rites, will be in Citizen’s IOOF Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Burn Unit of the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, the American Cancer Society or a favorite charity.

Gladys L. Patton

DENVER -- Services for Gladys L. Patton, 83, of Peru, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in McClain Funeral Home.

Mrs. Patton died at 11 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 1999, in Chase Center, Logansport.

Born June 29, 1915, in Cass County, she was the daughter of William Emmett and Tressa Deb Saine 4/2/99 CQKinzie Buskirk. On Dec. 15, 1935, she was married to John O. Patton, who died Dec. 9, 1987.

Mrs. Patton, a homemaker, had been an Avon dealer for 13 years and served as the secretary of Kokomo Church of the Brethren for several years, where she also was a member.

Surviving are four children, Larry L. Patton, Peru, Joseph E. Patton, Mesa, Ariz., Susan Diane Watson, Apache Junction, Ariz., and Dawnita K. Nutter, Kokomo; three siblings, Marjorie Robbins and Gerald Buskirk, both of Logansport, and Wilda Crippen, Fort Wayne; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

One sister, Donna M. Crull, preceded in death.

Pastor Robin Wentworth Mayer will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Corinth Cemetery, Twelve Mile.

Ruth Emily Lapierre

Services for Ruth Emily Lapierre, 84, of Logansport, formerly of Webster, Mass., will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor James Kreft officiating, and at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Oxford, Mass., with Pastor Robert Modrcq officiating.

Mrs. Lapierre died at 7 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 1999, in Miller’s Merry Manor.

Born Jan. 25, 1915, in Webster, she was the daughter of Otto and Lilla Wheelock Kindler. On Nov. 11, 1939, in Webster, she was married to Leo Rauolcq Lapierre, who died Feb. 9, 1974.

Mrs. Lapierre had been a bookkeeper for Kindler Plumbing Company in Webster. She also was a bookkeeper for the Logansport-Cass County Public Library.

She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, the Mary Martha Guild and the Lutheran Womens Missionary League. She was a former member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oxford.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, David and Nancy Lapierre, Logansport; one brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Evelyn Kindler, New Hampshire; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Barbara and John Bayer, Thompson, Conn., and Lois Barker, San Jose, Calif.; two grandchildren, Tamera Joan Atkinson, Peru, and Dr. Mark David Lapierre and his wife, Ellen, Greensboro, N.C.; and one great-grandson, Jesse W. Atkinson.

Two brothers, Ernest Kindler and Harold Kindler, and one sister, Joan Sampson Peckham, preceded in death.

Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Webster.

Friends may call one hour before each service in each church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 430 Ninth St., Logansport IN 46947.

Kroeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Esther E. Wilson

Services for Esther E. Wilson, 87, of Logansport, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Kroeger Funeral Home.

She died at 9:17 p.m. Sunday, April 2, 2000, in Chase Center.

Born Jan. 13, 1913, in Winamac, she was the daughter of Gust and Bertha Newman Evert. She was married on May 5, 1934, to Paul J. Grisez, who died Dec. 22, 1962. She was married Oct. 17, 1964, in Logansport, to Raymond A. "Smoky" Wilson, who survives.

Mrs. Wilson was a homemaker.

She enjoyed fishing, and in her earlier years she enjoyed spending time at the family cottage on the Tippecanoe River. She also enjoyed playing cards and crocheting.

Mrs. Wilson was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.

Also surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Marge Grisez, Maumee, Ohio; three stepdaughters and husbands, Kathy and Tom Godfrey, Eaton, Janice and Dave Nelson, Tega Cay, S.C., and Nancy Eberly, Tega Cay, S.C.; one sister, Erma Brown, Findlay, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

One brother, Theodore Evert and two sisters, Louise Grotto and Freida Dickensheets, preceded in death.

The Revs. Mark Berg and Donald Ruhl will officiate the services. Burial will be in Ever-Rest Memorial Park.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church and the activities department of Chase Center.

Virgil W. Richard

Services for Virgil W. Richard, 82, of 703 W. Miami Ave., will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Fisher Funeral Chapel.

He died at 1:01 a.m. Monday, April 3, 2000, in Chase Center.

Born March 11, 1918, in Portland, Ind., he was the son of Walter and Lucinda Simons Richard. He was married Dec. 24, 1956, in Logansport, to Esther Tyre, who survives.

Mr. Richard was retired from the Logansport State Hospital.

He was a member of the Tipton Lodge No. 33 and the Fort Wayne Valley of Scottish Rite.

He enjoyed attending auction sales.

Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Donald R. Hamilton, Lake Cicott; three granddaughters and their husbands, Kit and Steven Clary, Logansport, Kelly and Ron Rhoades, Pittsboro, and Kim and Ken Stiber, Avon; one grandson and his wife, Kirk and Luann Hamilton, Logansport; one half brother, Robert Jacobs, Portland; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Pastor Michael L. Williams of Burnettsville Baptist Church will officiate the services. Burial will be in Walton IOOF Cemetery, Walton.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral chapel, where a memorial service will be conducted by Tipton Lodge No. 33 at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joe Institute for the Deaf, St. Louis, Mo.
