Mildred Dahlberg

Mildred C. Dahlberg, 98, Michigan City, died at 4:10 p.m. Wednesday (May 28, 2003) at Carroll Woods Health & Rehab Center, Michigan City.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Greenwood Cemetery Chapel, Michigan City, with the Revs. David P. Matevia and David E. Seifert officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City. Chapter BA officers of PEO Sisterhood will have a memorial service.

There will be no visitation.

Miss Dahlberg was born June 6, 1904, in Rock Island, Ill., to the Rev. Dr. John G. and Josephine (Nelson) Dahlberg, both deceased.

Survivors include special friends and legal guardians Irving J. and Pearl Carlson, Long Beach. Miss Dahlberg had no living relatives; however, she had many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Florence E. Dahlberg, and one brother, Emil Dahlberg.

Miss Dahlberg was the librarian at Elston High School for 42 years before retiring in 1970.

She was honored and named to the Wall of Fame in 1977. She received a bachelor's degree from Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., and a master's degree from Western Reserve University. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Miller, Ind.

She was a member and past president of AAUW, a member of Chapter BA PEO Sisterhood and a member of the Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Miss Dahlberg was also a longtime resident of Pottawattomie Park.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Michigan City, or Augustana College, 7 Avenue, Rock Island, Ill.

Ezekiel Morgan

Ezekiel Morgan, 67, Michigan City, died at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday (May 27, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.

The funeral will be at noon Monday at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Eddie L. Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Coleman-Williams & Hicks Funeral Home.

He was born March 7, 1936, in Portageville, Mo., to Edmonia Shears, who preceded him in death.

Survivors include his common law wife, Gwendolyn Hollie, Michigan City; one daughter, Rosie Morgan, Michigan City; his father-in-law, Joseph (Ruthie) Laster, Michigan City; brother-in-law, Udell (Chariss) Laster, Michigan City; sister-in-law, Phyliss (Melvin) Samuels, Michigan City; special cousins, Walter Sneed, Benton Harbor, Mich., and Leearma Sneed, Chicago; and a host of godchildren, friends and relatives.

Mr. Morgan was a former sanitation truck driver for Michigan City. Mr. Morgan was a Michigan City resident for 50 years, having come from Missouri.

Dorothy Barlow

Dorothy A. Barlow, 77, Michigan City, died at 1:10 p.m. Wednesday (May 28, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.

The funeral will be at noon Monday at Root Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Trueblood officiating. Burial will be Tuesday in Crystal Springs Cemetery, Benton Harbor, Mich. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service Monday at the funeral home.

She was born June 21, 1925, in Benton Harbor, Mich., to Jesse and Elsie (McGowan) Barlow, who preceded her in death.

Survivors include two brothers, Robert (Patricia) Barlow, Trail Creek, and Charles Barlow, Michigan City; one niece, Elizabeth Lamb, Michigan City; four nephews, Robert Barlow, Memphis, Tenn., James Barlow, Fishers, Ind., John Barlow, Mishawaka, and Curtis Barlow, the Virgin Islands.

Miss Barlow was a retired bookkeeper for Wonderland Corp. in LaPorte. She formerly was a bookkeeper at Jaymar-Ruby in Michigan City. She was a member of the First Methodist Church in New Buffalo, Mich. Miss Barlow graduated from New Buffalo High School and Western Michigan University.

Adrian Bowmar

WINDSOR, Va. - Adrian George "Jack" Bowmar, 78, Windsor, formerly of Michigan City, died Friday (May 23, 2003) at Obici Hospital, Windsor, Va.

The funeral was held Tuesday, May 27, at the Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of Harrell and Hill Funeral Home, with Bishop Bret Ehrenzeller officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Virginia Beach, Va.

Mr. Bowmar was born in Michigan City to Theodore N. and Margurite (Eaton) Bowmar, who preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Buna Elizabeth Ayers Bowmar, Windsor; one son, Adrian (Debra) Bowmar; Portemouth, Va.; three daughters, Buna (James) Gwyn, Windsor, Barbara (Richard) Burch, Chesapeake, Va., and Jacquline (George) Howell, Fuquay-Varna, N.C.; two sisters, Patricia Funk, Oceanside, Calif., and Nancy Haggard, Michigan City; and three brothers, David Bowmar, Kansas City, Mo., Daniel Bowmar, Michigan City, and Carl Bowmar, Orange Park, Fla.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Diane B. Fisher; one sister, Donna Otto; and eight brothers, Nelson, James, Arthur, Melvin, Thomas, Randall, Gerald and Gregory Bowmar.

He was a retired bus line mechanic and a U.S. Navy veteran who served in World War II.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints and a member of the VFW Post 4411.

Mr. Bowmar was a volunteer dispatcher for the Isle of Wight Sheriff's Department.

Infant Brian Buchanan

LaPORTE - Infant Brian C. Buchanan Jr., LaPorte, died at 5:28 a.m. May 24, 2003, at LaPorte Hospital.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Haverstock Funeral Home, with David Adams Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Patton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service Monday at the funeral home.

He was born May 24, 2003, at LaPorte Hospital, to Natalie Stephens and Brian Christopher Buchanan Sr., both of LaPorte.

Survivors also include one sister, Alexandria Frederickson, LaPorte; grandmother Tina Marie Adams, LaPorte; grandparents, Phillip and Carla Jozwiak, Hudson Lake; grandfather, Newton Mann Jr., Apopka, Fla.; great-grandfather, Roy Meadway, LaPorte; great-grandmother, Helen Stephens, LaPorte; great-grandparents, George and Cecilia Washburn, Reno, Nev., and Jerry and Rose Jozwiak, Rolling Prairie.

Jasmine Hartford

LaPORTE - Jasmine S. Hartford, 15 days, LaPorte, died at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday (May 28, 2003) at Memorial Hospital, South Bend.

A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday in Pine Lake Cemetery with Kevin Novak officiating. There will be no visitation. Haverstock Funeral Home handled arrangements.

She was born May 13, 2003, in LaPorte to Jessica Hartford and Wade Kniefl, LaPorte.

Survivors also include one half-brother, Gaven Naberowski; grandparents, Mary and Bruce Hartford, LaPorte; grandmother, Sidney Kniefl, LaPorte, grandfather, David Rogers, LaPorte; great-grandfather, Bruce Hartford, Gary; godfather, Kevin P. Novak, LaPorte; three uncles and two aunts; two great-uncles and six great-aunts.

Dorothy Land

LaPORTE - Dorothy I. Land, 83, LaPorte, died Friday (May 30, 2003) at her home.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Newhard Funeral Home, Westville, with Pastor Marty Ethridge officiating. Burial will be in Pinhook Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral Home.

She was born March 4, 1920, in Peru, Ind., to Hamilton and Jenny (Brewer) Piatt. On June 9, 1946, she married Daniel I. Land, who died Nov. 6, 1993.

Survivors include nine children, Connie (Lloyd) Tharp, LaPorte, Charmain Daniels, Ten Mile, Tenn., Mary Smith, Bonifay, Fla., and Dorothy Violet Love, Spring City, Tenn.; Philip (Crystal) Land, Knox, Ind., James (Barbara) Land, French Lick, Ind., Lonnie Land, Columbia, Ala., Stephen Land, Tuscaloosa, Ala., and William Land, Westville; two brothers, Foster and Bunn Piatt, both of Florida; 24 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Vern Probst

LaPORTE - Vern R. Probst, 85, LaPorte, died at 4:15 a.m. Thursday (May 29, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. David Rogers officiating. Burial will follow at Patton Cemetery, LaPorte. A military service will be conducted Monday at the cemetery by American Legion Post 83 of LaPorte.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. Monday until the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Probst was born April 6, 1918, in LaPlace, Ill., to Peter Louis and Eliza Alice (Roberts) Probst. On April 26, 1943, in Hampton, Va., he married Vera Reeves, who survives in LaPorte.

Survivors also include one daughter, Lou Ann Shoue, LaPorte; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Irene Gladden, Rolling Prairie.

He was preceded in death by one son, Edwin Probst; one great-granddaughter, Madison Shoue; two sisters, Dorothy Stephens, and Delma Delka; and four brothers, Clarence, Olaf W., Harold and Pren Probst.

Mr. Probst was a millwright with the City of Michigan City. He also worked in maintenance at Purdue-North Central.

He was a trustee of Pleasant Township for more than 12 years and a member of the Indiana Trustees Association. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II and a member of the Faith Community Church.

Memorials may be made to Faith Community Church of LaPorte.

Gertrude Timm

Gertrude Timm, 73, Michigan City, died at 12:30 a.m. Friday (May 30, 2003) at her home.

A private family service will take place at a later date. Cremation will take place.

There will be no visitation. Carlisle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Timm was born March 1, 1930, in Michigan City, to Charles and Opal (Manter Glover) Dieckilman. On June 11, 1949, in Michigan City, she married Charles W. Timm, who preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara (Jeffrey) Eggers, Franklin, Ind., and Linda (Vernon) Moseley, Three Oaks, Mich.; five grandchildren, Jeremy Robinson, Erin (Ralph) Calhoun, Jennifer Mauch, and Carrie and Andrew Eggers; and one sister, Marian Irk, Medina, Ohio.

Mrs. Timm was a 1948 graduate of Elston High School, was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and was a past member of the Vivians.

Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Hospice.

Helen Skierkowski

Helen E. "Busia" Skierkowski, 94, Michigan City, died at 7:30 a.m. Monday (June 2, 2003) at her home.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, with the Rev. Walter Ciesla officiating. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel.

The St. Stanislaus Rosary Sodality will recite the Rosary at 3 p.m. and the parish Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel.

She was born May 27, 1909, in Michigan City, to John and JoAnna (Kaszynski) Milcarek. On May 31, 1937, in Michigan City, she married Joseph V. "Jim" Skierkowski, who died Sept. 19, 1971.

Survivors include six daughters, Ruth Ann (Joseph J.) Jacobs, Janet Edwards, Barbara Skierkowski and Rita Skierkowski, all of Michigan City, Sister Helen Marie Skierkowski, SSND, Milwaukee, Wis., and Mary Jo (Victor) Carmona, Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Theresa Meer, Michigan City; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Also preceding Mrs. Skierkowski in death were one daughter, Ann Marie Skierkowski; one son-in-law, Albert "Jack" Edwards; one brother; and six sisters.

Mrs. Skierkowski was a homemaker and a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. She was a member of the St. Stanislaus Rosary Sodality and enjoyed singing in the St. Stanislaus Polish Choir. Mrs. Skierkowski also was a member of the Polish Roman Catholic Union (PRCU) and the American Red Cross LaPorte County Chapter.

She enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Skierkowski liked her pets, traveling and playing cards. She was also known for helping and visiting the elderly.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church renovation fund.

Dickie Porterfield

Dickie L. Porterfield, 59, Michigan City, died at 4:45 p.m. Saturday (June 7, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.

The funeral is at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Queen of All Saints Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Yadron officiating. Cremation will follow the services. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel and 9:30 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

He was born Aug. 9, 1943, in Washington, Ind., to Vernon and Mary Etta (Guthrie) Porterfield. On Aug. 10, 1963, in Michigan City, he married Josephine Frecke, who survives.

Survivors also include one son, Richard (Catherine) Porterfield, Chesapeake Beach, Md.; two daughters, Mary Ann (Richard) Kemiel, LaPorte, and JoAnn (Todd) Swistek, Michigan City; one sister, Marilyn (William) Rist, Rolling Prairie; one brother, Norman Porterfield, Florida; and six grandchildren.

Mr. Porterfield was a system analyst for 28 years at Bethlehem Steel and recently worked for the Michigan City Police Department in maintenance. He was a member of Queen of All Saints Church, served in the U.S. Air Force, was a loving husband, father and grandfather and an avid gardener.

Memorial contributions may be made to Queen of All Saints Church, Share Foundation for the Handicapped or Michiana Humane Society.

Norman Snyder

Norman E. Snyder, 90, Michigan City, died at 3:38 p.m. Saturday (June 7, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.

The funeral is at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Matevia officiating. Burial is in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Carlisle Funeral Home.

He was born July 2, 1912, in LaPorte to Nathan and Bessie (Elkins) Snyder. On April 28, 1934, he married Olga Heisman, who preceded him in death.

Survivors include two sons, James (Sandra) Snyder, Muskego, Wis., and John (Jean) Snyder, LaPorte; five daughters, Barbara (Arnold) Bass, LaPorte, Sue (Richard) Anderson, Kittery Pointe, Maine, Elaine Bogart and Eloise (Charles) Ponder, both of Michigan City, and Sharon (Tim) Sanz, Leavenworth, Kan.; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by one brother, five sisters and three grandchildren.

Mr. Snyder was a Michiana Products inspector and Michigan City Area Schools custodian. He also worked at Heisman Marina. He was a member of the Michigan City and LaPorte County historical societies.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Dickie Porterfield

Dickie L. Porterfield, 59, Michigan City, died at 4:45 p.m. Saturday (June 7, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.

The funeral is at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Queen of All Saints Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Yadron officiating. Cremation will follow the services. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel and 9:30 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Mary Rusboldt

Mary L. Rusboldt, 81, Michigan City, died at 1 a.m. Monday (June 9, 2003) at her home.

The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Queen of All Saints Church, with the Rev. Michael J. Yadron officiating. Burial is in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Root Funeral Home. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Rusboldt was born Oct. 8, 1921, in Galena, Ill., to William and Wilhelmena Beadle. On Oct. 20, 1951, in Galena, she married Elmer R. Rusboldt, who died Nov. 11, 1980.

Survivors include one daughter: Vicky (James) Farrell, Michigan City; three sons: James (Mary K.) Rusboldt, Daniel Rusboldt and Gary (Gail) Rusboldt, all of Michigan City; seven grandchildren: Erin Rusboldt, Kevin Rusboldt, Jeffrey Rusboldt, Isaac Farrell, Craig Farrell, Monica Rusboldt and Sara Rusboldt, all of Michigan City; and three sisters: Francis Murphy, Galena, Catherine Seelye, Harvard, Ill., and Joann Foecking, Galena.

She was preceded in death by four sisters: Helen Petitgue, Florence Bautsch, Vera Wienen and Virginia Armstrong; and four brothers: Howard Beadle, Thomas Patrick Beadle, Donald Beadle and William Beadle Jr.

Mrs. Rusboldt was a Queen of All Saints Church member.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Bruce Murphy

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Bruce Kenneth Murphy, 54, Fort Myers, formerly of Michigan City, died Monday (June 2, 2003) in Florida.

A memorial service will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Michigan City, with the Rev. Eddie L. Jenkins officiating. There is no visitation.

Coleman-Williams & Hicks Funeral Home, Michigan City, assisted the family with local arrangements.

Mr. Murphy was born July 12, 1948, in Fort Wayne.

Survivors include his mother, Elizabeth Hill, Michigan City; two brothers, Malcolm (LaVerne) Smith and Alec (Tamiko) Smith, all of Michigan City; three sisters, Lisa Hurt, St. Paul, Minn., Erica and Heather Hairston, both of Michigan City; a special aunt, Vivian Greer, Michigan City; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Murphy, and one brother, David Hairston.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Vietnam.

He was a graduate of Elston High School and attended Culinary Arts School for two years to become a chef. He moved to Florida in 1985.

Jeffrey Salak

LONG BEACH - Jeffrey F. Salak, 51, Long Beach, died at 2 p.m. Monday (June 9, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Notre Dame Church, with the Rev. Stanley Rudcki officiating. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Root Funeral Home, and from 9:30 a.m. until the service Thursday at the church. Wake services will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

He was born Nov. 17, 1951, in Chicago, to Robert F. and Alberta (Herrburger) Salak. His parents survive in Long Beach.

Also surviving are two brothers, Craig R. (Polly) Salak, Mattoon, Ill., and Robert S. (Bonnie) Salak, LaPorte; two nieces, Jennifer Salak and Caitlin Salak; one nephew, Christopher Salak; and one uncle, Donald Salak, Des Plaines, Ill.

Mr. Salak was the custodian at Notre Dame School starting in 1978. He was a member of Notre Dame Church. He was a graduate of Elston High School, attended Indiana State University and was a dedicated employee of Notre Dame School.
