Richard J. McFarren, 67, of Wolcottville, a U.S. Army veteran, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at home. The Bluffton native worked for International Harvester. Surviving are his wife, Hazel; a son, Carl of Ozark, Ark.; daughters Carolyn S. Cook and Lorna Clouse, both of Angola, and Helen Clary of Auburn; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. There are no services or calling.

Warsaw - 1922-2002

Mary Louise Martin, 79, of Warsaw, a lifetime area resident, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at Lakeland Rehabilitation Center in Milford. The Warsaw native was a homemaker and attended Warsaw Church of the Nazarene. Surviving are sons Steven Bayne of Warsaw and Robert J. Bayne of Burket; sisters Kathryn Redinger of Oswego and Evelyn Archer of Atwood; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husbands James C. Bayne and Kenneth Martin. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, with calling from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.

Annabelle Kunz Kidd, 81, of Ligonier, owner of Mad Hatter Antique Store, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at Kingston of Ligonier.

The Decatur, Ill., native was an antique dealer, member of Ligonier United Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Star. Surviving are her husband, Robert W.; sons Charles W. and Christopher S., both of Ligonier, and John R. of Las Vegas; daughters Deborah A. Knepp of Ligonier, Julia B. Fenner of Naperville, Ill., and Jan M. Boeglin of Bonita Springs, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ligonier United Methodist Church, Ligonier, with calling from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Burial will be at Oak Park Cemetery, Ligonier. Memorials are to Saltshaker United Methodist Church or American Lung Association for COPD Research.

Howard T. Shank, 84, of Fort Wayne and Venice, Fla., a partner in H.B. Shank& Sons Mechanical Contractors, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at home in Venice.

The Lima, Ohio, native retired in 1982. He was a member of St. Paul's Chapel in Clear Lake, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. Surviving are his wife, Alice; daughters Sue E. Wilkinson of Syracuse, Molly A. Nagle of Valparaiso, and Julie A. Hanchar and Colleen S. Corona, both of Fort Wayne; a son, Daniel J. of Longmont, Colo.; a brother, Thomas C. of Fort Wayne; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sons Mark A. and Timothy J. Mass of Christian Resurrection was today at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 4500 S. Fairfield Ave. Burial was at Catholic Cemetery. Ellen G. Smith, 85, of Fort Wayne, who had taught third- and fourth-grade language, arts and math, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at Golden Years Homestead.

"She was devoted to her family and church." The Metcalfe County, Ky., native retired in 1976, and had taught at Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Ky. She was a member/deaconess of Highland Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky., and a member of Kentucky Teachers Association. Surviving are daughters Linda L. Shannon of Fort Wayne and Deborah S. Schneider of Cleves, Ohio; a son, Darrell K. of Louisville, Ky.; a sister, Maxine Allen of Glasgow, Ky.; a brother, Joseph Garmon of McClenny, Fla.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her husband, Joseph T., preceded her in death. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Highlands Funeral Home, Louisville, Ky., with calling from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Gary E. Martin, 32, of Fort Wayne, a warehouseman, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Lutheran Hospital.

The Bluffton native worked at the Superior Essex Whitley County Distribution Center. He was an Elmhurst Little League coach, enjoyed playing drums, and was a great sports fan. Surviving are his wife, Terry L.; daughters Miranda M. and Alexis J., both at home; a son, Mark E., at home; his mother, Donna J. McFarland of Bluffton; sisters Jean A. Brinneman of Bluffton and Deb S. Amstutz of New Haven; and his grandmother, Helen B. Slusher of Bluffton. His father, Ralph, preceded him in death. Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Home for Funerals, 6810 Old Trail Road, with calling from 1 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Bluffton. The Chicago native attended Broadway Christian Church, was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Angola, and an advocate for the Choice Program. Surviving are a son, Eugene McDonald of Lutz, Fla.; and nephews Ronald Bretz of Chicago, Donald Pruess of Hinsdales, Ill., and Graham Pruess of Illinois. Mary Ruth Lay Nusbaum, 64, of Fort Wayne and Seneca, S.C., died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at her home in Seneca.

The Corbin, Ky., native retired in 1990 from the American Red Cross as a supervisor of water therapy after 23 years of service. She was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church, Higher Steppers and American Legion Auxiliary. Surviving are her husband, James E.; daughters Pamela R. Nusbaum of Santee, S.C., Brenda E. Gillespie of Seneca, S.C., and Laura J. Polanco of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and five grandchildren. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Therese Catholic Church, 2222 Lower Huntington Road. Harold E. Bartels, 78, of Fort Wayne, owner of Harold's Terminal Service Station, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Canterbury Nursing& Rehabilitation.

He also worked at Archway Cookie Co. as a baker. He was a member of Westview Alliance Church and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. His hobbies were gardening and repairing old televisions. Surviving are his wife, Loretta A.; a daughter, Jill A. Hammons of Fort Wayne; a son, Barry A. of Fort Wayne; a sister, Betty Pogue of Fort Wayne; a brother, Wayne of Fort Wayne; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jay R. Memorial services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Westview Alliance Church, 9804 Illinois Road, with calling one hour before services. Burial will be at Covington Memorial Gardens. Hoppe and Dana Baker, both of Fort Wayne; a sister, Marie Tudor of Avilla; and five grandchildren. Private family services will be held. Burial will be at Covington Memorial Gardens. Gertrude "Trudy" Shilts, 80, of Fort Wayne, a member of Trinity English Lutheran Church, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Kingston Health Care.

The Fort Wayne native was an elementary school teacher for Fort Wayne Community Schools for 13 years and a volunteer for Red Cross Disaster Services. Surviving are daughters Jeanette DeVore of Fort Wayne, Molly Slick of San Diego, Kathleen Jones of Biscoe, N.C., and Carolyn Collins of Traverse City, Mich.; stepdaughters Fran Shilts, Cathy Freistroffer and JoAnn Young, all of Fort Wayne; a stepson, Perry of Fort Wayne; a sister, Hilde Millican of San Antonio; 14 grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. Her husband, O. Dean, preceded her in death. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Klaehn, Fahl& Melton Funeral Homes, Wayne Street Chapel, 420 W. Wayne St., with calling one hour before services. Amanda Graber, 71, of Grabill, a member of Old Order Amish Church, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at home.

The New Haven native was a homemaker. Surviving are her husband, Raymond; daughters Mary Schmucker and Ida Zehr, both of Spencerville, and Lean Schmucker of Grabill; sons LaVern of Harlan and Raymond Jr. of Grabill; sisters Martha Schmucker of Grabill, Malinda Steury of Spencerville and Susan Schwartz of Kentucky; a brother, David Schmucker of Grabill; 37 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Services are 9 a.m. Friday at the family residence, 14236 Spencerville Road, Grabill, with calling from noon to 9 p.m. today and also from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday, all at the residence. "She will be greatly missed." The Brent, Ala., native had worked for the Fort Wayne Developmental Center and Marriott Corp. She was a member of Greater Progressive Baptist Church. Surviving are daughters Elwanna Meriwether and Annette McKinney, both of Fort Wayne; a son, Charles of Fort Wayne; her mother, Lovella Bellamy of Fort Wayne; brothers Chester Wilms of Fort Wayne, and the Rev. William Wilms and Joe L. Stoudimire, both of Brent, Ala.; and 12 grandchildren. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater Progressive Baptist Church, 2215 John St., with calling one hour before services. Burial will be at Lindenwood Cemetery.

Robert H. Snyder, 85, of Albion and Frostproof, Fla., a lifelong Noble County resident, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, in Frostproof.

The Noble County native retired in 1978 from General Electric Co. after 36 years of service. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a founding member of Albion Eagles Lodge. Surviving are daughters Evelyn Rimmell of Albion and Luann Beucler of Churubusco; a son, Ray D. of Albion; a sister, Barbara Smith of Findlay, Ohio; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beatrice L., a daughter, Beverly A., and his second wife, Marian, on Feb. 15. Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Albion. Jerry J. Dell, 65, of LaGrange, Ga., and formerly of Churubusco, Ind., died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002.

The South Bend, Ind., native retired in 2001 from Trackmobile as parts manager after 20 years of service and had worked for Stockberger Machinery in Fort Wayne. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Surviving are sons Brad of Churubusco, Ind., and Lance of White Pigeon, Mich.; daughters Sarah Dell of LaGrange and Sue Hull of Sturgis, Mich.; his father, John of South Bend, Ind.; a sister, Loretta Valentine of Ellenton, Fla.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael. Services are 1 p.m. Thursday at Sheets& Childs Funeral Home, Churubusco, Ind., with calling from 11 a.m. until services. Burial will be at Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam, Ind. Memorials are to the National Rifle Association.

Ellen M. Gosnell, 82, of Warsaw, co-owner of Open Air Market for 39 years, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at Life Care Center of Rochester in Rochester.

The Martin County native was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Women of the Moose and American Legion Auxiliary, VFW and Elks Auxiliary in Sullivan. Surviving are daughters Judy DeRush and Joan Helser, both of Warsaw, and Joyce Jared of LaPorte; sisters Victoria Irwin and Irene Lewis, both of Sullivan, Teresa Bashman of Lafayette and Margaret Hopewell of Michigan; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell, a daughter and a son. Services will be held at a later date. There is no calling. Memorials are to the church, St. Mary's Church in Sullivan or the Alzheimer's Association.
