Departed on Aug. 4, 2004 and resided in Indianapolis, IN.

MRS. EDNA HALL HALSEY, 76, Indianapolis, died August 4, 2004.

She was born December 8, 1927, in Fleming-Neon, KY.

Graveside services: 2 p.m. August 10, 2004 in Floral Park Cemetery. date. There will be no visitation.

Survivors include her children John Vance, Linda Stinson, Denny Vance; sisters Lola Vance of Kentucky and Liza Morgan; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and three great- great- grandchildren.

Mrs. Halsey was a homemaker who dearly loved her family.

Arrangements are being handled by Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center – Morris St., 1604 W. Morris St., Indianapolis.

Charles Curtis Powell
Born in Indianapolis, IN on Jul. 30, 1986

CHARLES CURTIS POWELL, 18, Greenfield, died August 3, 2004.

Charles was born July 30, 1986, in Indianapolis to Charles and Julie (Whitaker) Powell. Charles was a senior at Mt. Vernon High School. For the past six months, Charles worked at Sparkling Image Car Wash in Castleton. He loved bowling, Boxing and received his brown belt in Karate.

In addition to his parents, Charles is survived by his sister Christy Powell, grandparents Joan Whitaker, Marilyn Powell, Patrick Taylor; aunts and uncles Cathy Gilliam, Peter Whitaker, Michael Whitaker and Daniel Whitaker.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Flanner & Buchanan Washington Park East Community Life Center, with calling Friday 4 to 9 p.m. in the Community Life Center. Burial: Washington Park East Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the buck Creek Fire Department, where Charles served as a Cadet.

Mary E. Coffing
Born in Waco, TX on Jan. 19, 1925
Departed on Aug. 4, 2004 and resided in Carmel, IN.

MARY ELIZABETH COFFING, 79, Carmel, loving mother, grandmother, mother-in-law and devoted friend, passed away Tuesday, August 3, at Riverview Hospital after a long, courageous battle with lung cancer.

Mary was born January 19, 1925, in Waco, TX, to the late John H. and Bonnie Johnston Kuykendall. After grading as valedictorian from Fairfield High School in Texas in 1942, she went on to attend Baylor University as a pre-med student from 1942-1944. She then transferred to Vanderbilt University where she graduated from the School of Nursing in 1947. Mary was the In-Service Director at the former Noblesville Healthcare Center until her retirement in 1986. Previously, from 1953-1963, she was Charge Nurse and Assistant Nursing Service Administrator at Atlantic Refining Company, Port Arthur, TX. From 1947-1952 she was Senior Staff Nurse for the Industrial Visiting Nurses Association, Richmond, VA.

Mary was a member of Northside Baptist Church, Quing Club of Vanderbilt University Alumni Association, Pebble Brook Golf Course and was a volunteer at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville, IN. She was past president of the American Association of Industrial Nurses, where she received the honor of Texas Nurse of the Year. Additionally, Mary had a great love of politics and was a loyal member of the Republican Party, becoming a candidate for State Representative in Texas in 1962. Her family is joyful that she is now resting at the feet of her Lord, where she has a new body, all of her questions are being answered, and she is receiving the crowns she earned through her years of faithful service and worship.

Calling will take place on Saturday, August 7 from 10 to noon at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center – Carmel, followed by a service and honoring of her life at noon. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. in Justus Cemetery in Oxford, IN.

Mary was the widow of Thomas H. Coffing and is survived by her daughter Bonnie e. Metcalf; sons John R. and Paul L. Gorman; and grandchildren Elizabeth Gorman, Thomas and Holly Metcalf.

Mary’s wishes were that memorial contributions be made to Northside Baptist Church Youth Scholarship Fund and Riverview Hospital Foundation.

Michael A. Stutz
Born on Mar. 3, 1949
Departed on Aug. 4, 2004 and resided in Indianapolis, IN.

MICHAEL A. STUTZ, 55, Indianapolis, passed away August 4, 2004.

Michael was a member of the Laborer’s Union Local #120 and had worked 15 years at Reith-Riley Paving Company.

He is survived by his children Shannon Hayes, Niki Morton, Stoney Stutz, Shane Stutz; brother Glen Stutz; half-brother Billie Perdue; half-sister Shirley Perdue; mother and stepfather Dorothy and Jack Webb; 5 grandchildren; and previous wife Angie Stutz-McKenna.

Services: 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center – Washington Park East, with calling Friday 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral center. Entombment will follow the service at Washington Park East Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Michael’s memory to the Little Red Door Cancer Agency.

Henry A. Carter
Born in Indianapolis, IN on Sep. 22, 1912

HENRY A. CARTER, 91, Zionsville, formerly of Indianapolis, died August 4, 2004, at Zionsville Meadows Healthcare.

Henry was born September 22, 1912, in Indianapolis to Carney and Ella Schwing Carter. They preceded him in death along with his sister Edna Smith and his beloved wife Isabell Gillespie Carter, whom he married on April 23, 1942, in St. Louis, MO. Henry was a graduate of Arsenal Technical High School and faithfully served his country during World War II as a Lieutenant in the United States Army Air Corps. Mr. Carter worked 20 years for Maryland Casualty Co. as a Safety Engineer before retiring in 1971.

Henry is survived by his son Ed Carter and his wife Norma of Zionsville; grandson Airman 1st Class Nick Carter of Osan Air Force Base, Korea, and granddaughter Allison Carter of Zionsville.

A service celebrating his life will be held 2 p.m. Monday, August 9, 2004, at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center – Zionsville, Dr. Charles Ballard officiating, with visitation from 12 to 2 p.m. on Monday. Entombment will follow the service at Washington Park East Cemetery, Indianapolis.

Contributions in memory of Mr. Carter may be made to the American Kidney Foundation.

Margaret R. Sheehan

She was a member of Professional Secretaries Inc., Executive Women International and American Business Women’s Association.

John M. Knapp

JOHN M. KNAPP, 89, Mesa, AZ, formerly of Indianapolis, passed away Oct. 27, 2003.

Born on Dec. 2, 1913, in Dowagiac, MI, he was a pastor in the Christian Church and an automotive salesman. He retired from Palmer Dodge at the age of 80. He served as a chaplain in the U.S. Army during WWII. John was always first to lend a helping hand to other people.

John’s wife Wilma Ruth Knapp preceded him in death, as well as a son James Knapp. Daughter Alice Swartz of Mesa, Arizona, son John Knapp, Jr., of Tucson, Arizona, and 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren survive him.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center -- Broad Ripple. Calling: None. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

Lila I. McWhirter
Born in Gallatin, TN on Jun. 5, 1915

LILA I. KEMPER McWHIRTER, 88, Greenfield, IN, died Oct. 29, 2003.

She was born June 5, 1915, in Gallatin, TN, the daughter of Thomas J. and Ezma I. (Briley) Kemper. She worked for 20 years with Dage Electric in Franklin, IN. She also worked as a bookkeeper with McWhirter & Son Construction. Mrs. McWhirter was a member of Gallatin Baptist Church and the Indiana Historical Society.

She was the widow of Carl J. McWhirter. Survivors: Children Priscilla Key (Beech Grove, IN), Bette Whitaker (Greenwood, IN) and Carl J. McWhirter, Jr. (Greenfield, IN); 9 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center – Washington Park East, 10722 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN. Visitation will be after 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at the funeral center. Entombment: Washington Park East Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
