Dorothy I. Moore
Dorothy Irene Moore, 91, a resident of Peabody Retirement Community, died there Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002. She was born in Astoria, Long Island, NY on Jan. 24, 1911 to Arthur and Vivian (Glickman) Kemmerer. She married William Moore in Cleveland, OH on July 2, 1930; he died Sept. 11, 1990.
She was a member of the North Manchester United Methodist Church, a former member of the N. Manchester Athenian Club and past treasurer of the REACH Committee. She was a volunteer at Peabody Retirement Community for more than 40 years.
She and her husband, William, owned a Coast to Coast Store in Illinois from 1948-1955 when they purchased the North Manchester Coast to Coast Store, which they owned until 1970 when they sold it to their son, Roger.
Survivors include son Roger (Judith) Moore of North Manchester; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Joyce) Deardorff of Wakarusa, IN; two sisters - Joyce Forbes of Albuquerque, NM and Jeanne Swearingen of Encinitas, CA; granddaughters Mrs. Jeff (Melissa) Werner of North Manchester and Mrs. Roland (Jill) Rohrer of Goshen, IN; a grandson, Bret (Shari) Deardorff of Wakarusa, IN; and 11 great grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Saturday, March 2, 2002 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel with Pastor Fred Bishop officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery of North Manchester. Preferred memorials are to Peabody Entertainment Endowment.

Cpl. Curtiss A. (Tony) Carter
Cpl. Curtiss A. (Tony) Carter, 25, formerly of Lafayette, IN, currently Fort Hood, TX, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002 in Kuwait. He was born Jan. 6, 1977 in Lafayette to Curtiss C. and Regina J. Carter of Fowler, IN. He married Christina Sanders in November 2001 and she survives.
He was a member of McCutcheon High School Class of 1995, and had been attending Purdue Flight School to earn a pilot's license. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, flying planes, and also participated in rodeo during high school years.
He had been a member of the Army HHC-8 First Cavalry Division for three years. Cpl. Carter served as the gunner for HQ 209 during the Brigade Scout Ex-Evals from Sept. 18-22, 2000; his skill was credited to the platoon's being named the best scout platoon in the brigade. He was awarded "Top Scout" honors for his participation Nov. 6-9 2000 during the Cavalry's Scout Stakes Competition.
The Battalion's Commander credited Cpl. Carter as instrumental in locating missing sensitive items from a sinking tank. He distinguished himself by earning "Top Gun" in the three Cavalry Scout Light Gunnery in which he participated. His proficiency and dedication brought great credit upon himself, the Mustang Battalion, and the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Christina Carter of Ft. Hood, TX; his parents Curtiss C. and Regina J. Carter of Fowler, IN; grandparents Dennis (Nub) and Joanne Hichman of Lafayette, and Marjorie Carter of North Manchester; also great grandparents Josephine Malaska and Ferry Northdurth, both of Lafayette; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Friends were received, and funeral service were being held Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the Soller-Baker Funeral Homes, Inc., 400 Twyckenham Blvd., Lafayette, IN. Burial is at Farmers Institute Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, preferred memorials are to the charity of the donor's choice.

Mary Katherine Vickrey
Mary Katherine (Kay) Vickrey, 82, a resident of Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester, IN, and former resident for many years at 353 Columbus St., Wabash, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002 at Peabody Healthcare Center. She was born Aug. 19, 1919 in Wabash, IN to Harold and Ethel Beatrice (Huddleson) Tyner. She married Verlin J. Vickrey in Wabash on Sept. 16, 1919; he died Feb. 23, 2000.
Kay retired as head teller at First National, now Wells-Fargo Bank in Wabash after 25 years.
Survivors include a son, James J. (Gaynel Miner) Vickrey of Parks, AZ; grandsons Todd (Jeanette) Vickrey of Phoenix, AZ and Jay (Nicole) Vickrey of Waverly, OH; and five great grandchildren. Two brothers and a sister preceded her in death.
Funeral service was held Friday, March 1, 2002 at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Main Street Chapel of Wabash, with the Rev. Jordan Truman officiating. Burial was in the Gardens of Memory Cemetery located at Marion, IN.

Sarah C. Wolf
Services for Sarah C. Wolf, 86, of Peabody Retirement Community, were held Tuesday, Feb. 26, at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, N. Manchester Chapel with Pastor Randell Webb officiating.
Pallbearers for the burial at Old German Baptist Cemetery of North Manchester were Edward Egner, Dennis Egner, Scott Egner, Tom Wolf, Tim Wolf, and Dan Showalter.

Harold Watson
Harold Watson, 84, of 4233W 1300N, Silver Lake, IN, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002 at Community Care Center of Wabash, IN. He was born in Wabash County, IN to Sherman and Hazel (Heeter) Watson. He married Mabel J. Lauer June 11, 1938 and she preceded him in death Sept. 30, 2001.
He was a graduate of Chester High School Class of 1936. He was a farmer, and retired from Dickerhoff Electric, Silver Lake, after 25 years.
He is survived by a daughter, June Darlene Shear of North Manchester; two brothers - Joe Watson of North Manchester and Karl Watson of Fort Wayne; two grandchildren, Jim Shear of North Webster and Mrs. Todd (Amy) Bechtold of South Whitley; and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother.
Funeral service was held Friday, March 1, 2002 at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary N. Manchester Chapel with Pastor Jeffery Hawkins officiating. Burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery, Urbana, IN.

John E. Kline
John E. Kline, 61, of 5142 W. Warren Ave., Silver Lake, IN, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002 at Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw, IN. He was born in Kosciusko County to Hugh and Mildred (Richey) Kline Dec. 20, 1940. He was a driver for Webo Trucking Company of Laketon, IN.
Survivors include a companion, Betty Ferguson of Silver Lake; seven sons - John Kline Jr. of St. Paul, VA, Hugh Kline and William "Bill" Kline, both of Nappanee, IN, Robert "Skip" Kline of Baltimore, MD, and Aaron, Sean, and Kevin Kline, all of Florida; three daughters - Mrs. Lawrence (Debbie) Flannery of Silver Lake, Mrs. Robert (Shirley) Silvia of Nappanee, and Angie Kline of Florida; three brothers - Bob Kline of Warsaw, Jim Kline of North Manchester, and Tom Kline of Daytona Beach, FL; 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral service was held Friday, March 1, 2002 at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, N. Manchester Chapel with Rev. Lorenzo Hurd officiating. Burial was in South Pleasant Cemetery of rural Silver Lake, IN.

Herbert M. Gaerte Sr.
Services for Herbert M. Gaerte Sr., 85, of rural North Manchester, IN were held Sunday afternoon, Feb. 24, at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, N. Manchester Chapel with Deaconess Sabine Thomas officiating. Organist was Peggy Boggs.
Burial was at Oaklawn Cemetery of North Manchester, with Kristian Gaerte, Ashley Gaerte, Nick Gaerte, Heath Gaerte, Michael Sorg, Anthony Sorg as pallbearers.

Walter E. Jones
Services for Walter E. Jones, 59, formerly of Wabash, IN were held Saturday morning, Feb. 23, 2002 at Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester with Pastor Lowell Burrus officiating. The burial service was arranged by DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, North Manchester Chapel.

Okie Lester
Services for Okie Lester, 85, North Manchester, were held Friday morning, February 22, 2002 at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, N. Manchester Chapel. Moses Griffey and Lawrence Elkins officiated.
Serving as pallbearers at the burial service at Oaklawn Cemetery were Jack Rupley, Rick Cripe, Ron Lambert, Max Cordill, Jim Combs, and Ray Lester.

Ralph J. Pretorius
Ralph Jewett Pretorius, 81, of 5940S 300E, Wabash, IN died Sunday, March 3, 2002 at Wabash County Hospital, Wabash, IN. He was born March 16, 1920 in Wabash County to Jacob Frederick and Matilda (Mattern) Pretorious. He married Nina P. Tarter in Somerset, KY on Oct. 23, 1942.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the SeaBees. He was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church in Logansport. He retired in 1983 from the State Hospital in Logansport after 22 years, and was a lifelong farmer. He lived in Logansport from 1957 to October 2001 when he moved to Wabash.
Survivors include his wife, Nina, of Wabash; daughters Mrs. Robert (Nancy) Moore and Mrs. Jon (Linda) Helfin, both of Wabash; a sister, Mrs. Arnold ()Eunice) Bahler of Wabash and a brother Marvin "Mike" Pretorius, also of Wabash; granddaughters Tonja Helfin of Marion, IN, Anne Moore and Abigail Moore, both of Wabash; and grandsons Sean (Molly) Helfin and Alan Moore, both of Wabash; and two great grandchildren. Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Main Street Chapel, Wabash, with Rev. Tom Cummins officiating. Burial was in Ever Rest Memorial Park located at Logansport.
Preferred memorials are to Carey Services, Inc., 2724 S. Carey Street, Marion, IN 46953.

Lavon Keirn
Lavon Keirn, 65, of 2644E 900N, North Manchester, IN, died Saturday morning, March 9, 2002, at Wabash County Hospital, Wabash, IN. She was born Sept. 10, 1936 at Allen County, IN to Orville and Mildred (Zumbrum) Knisley, both deceased. She married Argyle "Bud" Keirn May 19, 1954, who survives.
She was a member of Servia United Church of Christ, and was a retired practical nurse with the Manchester Clinic for 28 years. She was a 1954 graduate of Columbia City High School.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Steve (Peggy) Keirn of Servia, IN; daughters Mrs. Larry (Roxanna) Bolinger of Urbana, Mrs. Mike (Virginia) Aughinbaugh of North Manchester, Mrs. Garry (Candis) Mulkey and Mrs. John (Sandra) Selleck, both of Wabash; a brother, Orville (Barb) Knisley of Churubusco, and a half brother, Jamie Knisley, California; sisters Louise Custer of Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Steve (Shirley) Mossburg of Columbia City, and a half sister Becky Harris of Milford; her stepmother, Jean Knisley of Syracuse, IN; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was scheduled for Tuesday, March 12, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, North Manchester Chapel. The Rev. William Hainstock will officiate and burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Servia, IN. Preferred memorials are to the Servia United Church of Christ.

Maxine H. Deneve
Maxine H. Deneve, 86, of 7505 Tattersholl Circle, Fort Wayne, IN, died Friday, March 8, 2002 at Northeast Indiana Hospice Home of Fort Wayne, IN. A former North Manchester resident, she was born at Allen County, IN to Lewis and Hattie (Miller) Klinker, both deceased. She married Al J. Deneve June 7, 1936 and he survives.
She was a member of the North Manchester Missionary Church; she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and Sunday School teacher and will be greatly missed, but is now home with her heavenly Father. Mrs. Deneve was a charter member of the Missionary Church and a primary Sunday school teacher for 50 years.
She was a cook at the Sidney High School and was employed at the former Coach House Restaurant of North Manchester.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters - Mrs. Clifford (Margaret) Clouser and Mrs. Fred (Joan) Grossman, both of Fort Wayne; sisters Irene Deneve of North Manchester, and Sadie Longadner, Mary Brown, and Helen Marquart, all of Fort Wayne; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Five brothers and a sister preceded her in death.
Funeral service was held Monday afternoon, March 11, 2002 at the Missionary Church, 806 E. SR 114, North Manchester, with Rev. Adam Henderson and Dr. John Moran officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery of North Manchester.
DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, No. Manchester Chapel was in charge of arrangements. Preferred memorials are to North Manchester Missionary Church of the Fort Wayne Christian School.
