Ruth P. Akers
Ruth P. Akers, 83, of 2888N 500E, Urbana, IN, died Saturday, April 6, 2002 at St. Joseph Medical Center, Fort Wayne, IN. She was born at Wabash County, IN to Peter A. and Elizabeth C. (Schnitz) Gretzinger June 3, 1918. She married Russell Akers on August 10, 1946; he died November 10, 1987.
She was a graduate of Lagro High School in 1937 and attended Manchester College. She was retired from United Technologies of North Manchester after 12 years employment. She was a member of Lagro United Methodist Church, Lagro.
She is survived by a daughter, Rose Alice Akers of Urbana.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary No. Manchester Chapel with Dr. Janice Fulbright officiating. Burial was at Hopewell Cemetery of Lagro.

James V. Montgomery
James V. Montgomery, 42, of 391 W. Market St., Wabash, IN, died Friday, April 6, 2002 at Parkview Hospital of Fort Wayne. He was born June 26, 1959 at Paintsville, KY to Roy and Hazel (Haney Hensley) Montgomery. He married Tracy Farmer Nov. 24, 2000 in Wabash. He attended Christian Heritage Church in Wabash, and lived in Wabash three years, coming from Paintsville, KY.
He is survived by his wife, Tracy, of Wabash; his mother Hazel Hensley and step father James Hensley, of Wabash; step daughter Christina Hitlaw and step son Aaron Hitlaw, both of Wabash; and brothers Donald and Ronald Montgomery of Paintsville, KY. He was preceded in death by one sister.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Ave. Chapel with Pastor Tim Prater officiating. Burial was in Memorial Lawns Cemetery of Wabash.

William Lee Cooley
William Lee Cooley, 58, of 610 N. East St., Wabash, IN died April 4, 2002 at Lutheran Hospital of Indiana, Fort Wayne. He was born July 31, 1943 at Wabash, IN to Charles T. and Martha (Burkholder Watson) Cooley. He married Debbie Smallwood June 22, 1968 and she survives.
He was a fork lift driver for GDX (formerly General Tire) in Wabash until January of this year. He was a member of Teamsters Union local 135 and was a 1962 graduate of Wabash High School.
He is survived by his wife, Debbie of Wabash; a son, William L. Cooley, Jr. of Wabash; daughters Sherry Lee Bogdon of Montana, and Brandy Cooley of Milford, IN; a sister, Mrs. Paul (Karen) Conley of Wabash and five grandchildren. A brother preceded him in death.
Funeral service was held Monday, April 8, 2002 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Ave. Chapel with Pastor Tim Prater officiating. Burial was in the Friends Cemetery, Wabash, IN. Guestbook may be signed on line at grandstaff-hentgen.com.

Betty J. Gebert
Betty J. Gebert, 72, of 456 Bay View Court, Columbia City, IN, died Monday, April 1, 2002 at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City, IN. She was born at Columbia City on April 8, 1929 to William and Wilda (Grable) Kessie.
She attended Thorncreek Elementary School and graduated from Larwill High School with the Class of 1947. She was employed with Gebert Farm Supply in Larwill, IN and PHP Insurance Group in Fort Wayne. She was also an inserter for the Post & Mail Newspaper, Columbia City and was a homemaker. She was married to Jimmie Gebert for 38 years, then divorced. She was a loving mother and devoted grandmother and great grandmother. She has lived her entire life in Whitley County.
She was a member of Columbia City Eagles Auxiliary, the N.E.O. Homemaker Extension Club and she enjoyed sewing as a hobby and was an avid doll collector and baker.
Ms. Gebert is survived by her special friend Garland Wilcox of North Manchester; three daughters, Mrs. Roy (Rebecca) J. Ousley of Pierceton, Mrs. Steven (Katherine J.) Eberly of South Whitley; Mrs. Quentin "Joe" (Sandra) Saggars of Ligonier; two sons, Steven C. (Carla) Gebert of Larwill and Bradley D. (Denise) Gebert of Columbia City; ten grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren; three brothers from Columbia City - Jack (Beulah) Kessie, Carl "Fritz" (Joyce) Kessie, Dick (Carolyn) Kessie and Bill (Audrey) Kessie Jr. from Fort Wayne; a sister, Neva (Powell) Spangler of Norfolk VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, four brothers and a grandson.
Funeral service was held Friday, April 5, 2002 at DeMoney-Grimes, Countryside Park Funeral Home Columbia City with Pastor Barry Faucett of he New Hope Wesleyan Church, officiating. Burial was in St. Matthew's Cemetery, Thorncreek Township, Whitley County, IN. Memorials may be made to either the American Cancer Society, Columbia City Fire Department or the Whitley County EMS. Envelopes available at the funeral home.

Rev. R. Leo Gathany
Services for Rev. R. Leo Gathany, 85, of North Manchester, IN were held Friday afternoon, April 5, 2002 at Faith Baptist Church, North Manchester, IN with Pastor Andrew Gathany, Rev. Louis Showers, and Rev. Mark Klinepeter officiating. Dianna Karns was organist and Dennis Helvey, chorister.
Remembrances were given by Steve Pelton, Paul Gathany and Gladys DeLoe. Esther Carpenter provided special music.
Serving as pallbearers were Todd Gathany, Chad Gathany, Mark Gathany, Paul Gathany, James Gathany, Steve Pelton, and Phil Gathany.
DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Grace D. Taylor
Services for Grace D. Taylor, 72, of 2 Laurel Circle, North Manchester, were held Saturday morning, April 6, 2002 at United Methodist Church of North Manchester. Pastor Fred Bishop, Pastor David Friend, and Rev. Gerald Hewson officiated.
Rita Slater presided at the organ, and special music was presented by Jeff Cohen and Joe Taylor.
Burial was at Fairview Cemetery, Servia, IN and pallbearers who served were Christopher Taylor, Andrea Taylor, Sherry Taylor, Max Taylor, Roger Taylor, and Evelyn Collins. Arrangements were by DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, No. Manchester Chapel.

Jack E. Hire
Jack E. Hire, 78, of Fremont, IN, died at his residence on Van Gildor Road, Fremont, IN Friday, April 5, 2002. He was born July 12, 1913 at Waterloo, IN to William Howard and Ruth (Tillman) Hire. He married Beulah Wing Jan. 25, 1947 in Kendallville.
He was a World War II and Korean War veteran. He held memberships in Ashley Masonic Lodge, Ft. Wayne Scottish Rite, he Ft. Wayne Shrine Club, and Waterloo VFW. He owned and operated several area restaurants before retiring in 1986.
He is survived by a son Kirk Hire of Waterloo; and two daughters Toby Walter of Fremont and Nancy Drudge of Columbia City; a brother, George Hire of Melbourne, FL.; grandchildren Angie Walter, Amy Price, Josh Frantz, and Erik Watson; and great grandchildren Jacob and Nicholas Price. A second brother, William Hire who had been a resident of North Manchester, preceded him in death.
Memorial service was held Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at Feller Funeral Home of Waterloo, IN. Officiating at the graveside service was the Auburn American Legion. Burial was in Waterloo Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to Jake and Nicholas Price Education Fund.

Clara E. Deeter
Clara E. Deeter, 90, of 5919 E 750 S, Pierceton, IN died Sunday, April 7, 2002 at Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw, IN. She was born July 27, 1911 at Lawrenceburg, TN to James and Marwillie (Huckaba) Gallaher. She married Howard Deeter at Marion, IN Nov. 22, 1938; he preceded her in death in 1980.
A homemaker, she was a resident of Pierceton, IN since 1975, and was formerly of Fairmount, IN.
Survivors include a sister, Karon Deeter of LaFountain, IN; a daughter-in-law, Becky Deeter of Pierceton; four grandchildren - Marty and Rick Deeter, Deb Reed, and Laurie Kerr, all of Pierceton; 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, John; a brother Lemuel Gallahu, five sisters - Ora Hicks, Dessie Shaw, Bertie Green, Ethel Julert, and Bethel Winters.
Funeral service was held Wednesday morning, April 10, 2002 with Pastor J. P. Freeman officiating. Burial was at Pack Cemetery of Fairmount, IN. Preferred memorials are to the North Manchester Congregational Christian Church Building Fund, c/o McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel of Pierceton.

Bernese Grubb Kinney
Bernese Grubb Kinney, of 95 Holcombe Cove Road, died Friday, April 5, 2002 at Pisgah Manor Health Care Center, Candler, N.C.
She was born in Knox County, Ohio, in 1912 to the late John Clarence and Florence Syler Grubb. She graduated from high school in Silver Lake, Indiana and from Manchester College. She taught primary school several years. She was a member of Montmorenci United Methodist Church in Candler, N.C.
She was married to Max G. Kinney in 1945, who preceded her in death in 1991. One brother and two sisters also preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughter, Bernita Anne Prestwood and husband, Steve, of P.O. Box 732, Candler, N.C. 28715; grandson, Shane Prestwood; sisters Catherine Zile and husband, Lowell, of Silver Lake, and Rita Marie Surland of Citrus Heights, California; sister-in-law, Jean Renschler of Louisville, KY, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held April 8 at Montmorenci United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dan Lyons officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Lakeview Cemetery at Silver Lake.

Gerald D. Harding
Gerald Dean Harding, 76, of 533D Bryan Ave., Wabash, IN, died Sunday, April 7, 2002 at his residence. He was born March 21, 1926 at Wabash, IN to Donald D. and Georgia (Morris) Harding. He worked as a construction worker and at one time worked at the Manchester Foundry, North Manchester. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran.
He is survived by four daughters - all of Wabash - Mrs. Claude (Rhonda) Nelson, Mrs. Phil (Laura) Martin, Mrs. Michael (Cindy) Conliff and Jennifer Harding; three sons - Dennis Harding and Jeff Harding both of Wabash, and James Harding of Orlando, FL; two sisters - Virginia Cook of Anderson, IN and Betty Shropshire of Ossian, IN; 15 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Funeral service was held Wednesday morning, April 10, 2002 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Avenue Chapel with Rick Stone officiating. Burial was in Falls Cemetery of Wabash.

Mary E. Walton
Mary E. Walton, 89, Covington Manor Nursing Home, Fort Wayne and formerly of North Manchester, IN, died Monday afternoon, 3:48 p.m. April 1, 2002 at Lutheran Hospital, Ft. Wayne. She was born Oct. 10, 1912 at Huntington County, IN to Charles L. and Fredericka (Schalies) Thorn.
A homemaker, she married Halon Walton, Sr. on May 30, 1935; she died Ocober 4, 1996. She was a 1932 graduate from Huntington Township school. She was a member of the Narve of the Railroad Retirement, and of United Methodist Church of North Manchester.
She is survived by a son, Halon Walton, Jr., of Woodburn, IN; a daughter, Mrs. Dea (Donna) Hethcote of North Manchester; a brother, Martin Thorn of Huntington, seven grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. A granddaughter, five brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.
Friends may call Thursday, april 4, 2002 from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, North Manchester Chapel. Funeral will be held at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary Friday, April 5, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Fred Bishop officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Huntington, IN.
Preferred memorials are to that of the donor's choice.
