Richard Valyer
Richard Arden Valyer, 73, of Eureka, died June 14, 2001, at the St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. He was born Feb. 27, 1928, in Emporia, the son of Herbert and Mabel Valyer. He graduated from Emporia College, and received his master's degree from Emporia State University. He taught high school in Elmdale, Wash., and Westphalia, Kan., and was a professor of education at Southwestern University in Winfield, Kan. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his niece, Lesa Marie Langford. Survivors include his wife, Ila Valyer, of the home; two stepsons, James Lee and his wife, Rosemary, and John Lee and his wife, Cindy; a sister, Pat Langford, and her husband, Ken; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Stanley, Kan.

Earline Mae VanHoutan
Earline Mae (Brooks) VanHoutan, 74, Olathe, died Saturday, March 18, 2000. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at D.W. Newcomers Sons Johnson County Chapel. Burial will be at Johnson County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. VanHoutan was born Dec. 4, 1925, close to Buffalo, Mo., the daughter of Earl and Lola Brooks. She graduated from high school at Moran, Kan. In 1942, she married Everett VanHoutan. After World War II, they moved to Kansas and lived in Overland Park until 1980, then built a home south of Gardner. She worked 35 years at St. Luke's Hospital in the newborn nursery. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988. Survivors include two sons, Milan VanHoutan, Gardner, and Joe VanHoutan, Olathe; four grandsons; three granddaughters; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Velma Dennis, Iola, and Vesta Cheatham, Olathe; and one brother, Robert Brooks, Topeka.

Pauline VanLandingham
Pauline VanLandingham, 84, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at the Olathe Medical Center. She was born June 28, 1916, in Olathe, the daughter of Harry and Pearl Stewart VanLandingham. The family moved to Ottawa where she went to high school. She attended Ottawa University for two years and transferred to Pittsburg State University where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in music. She received a master's degree in music from the University of Kansas. She began teaching music in public schools in Latham, Kan. After two years, she taught in Johnson County District 110, which consolidated with Shawnee Mission School District. She taught elementary music for 41 years at the Overland Park Elementary School, retiring in 1978. She played in Mr. DeRubertis' Orchestra and the Overland Park Orchestra. Her instrument was the double bass. She was a life member of Sigma Alpha Iota alumni chapter, serving 67 years. She also was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa women in education, Merriam Music Study Club, Olathe branch of the American Association of University Women, Olathe Historical Society, Johnson County Retired Teachers Association, life member of the National Education Association, and the Shawnee Mission Indian Historical Society. Survivors include Maxine Glinstra, Olathe; Russell and Gladys Girsch, Osage City; and Vivian Girsch and Oma Girsch, both of Gardner. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, at the W.L. Frye and Son Funeral Home, Olathe. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Baldwin City. The family requests memorial contributions to the Olathe Historical Society or to the Shawnee Mission Indian Historical Society.

Rev. Kenneth VanOstrand
The Rev. Kenneth E. VanOstrand, 75, Olathe, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Merriam. He was born on Jan. 23, 1925, at York, Neb., the son of Walter and Lucy (Nickels) VanOstrand. He grew up and was educated in the York area. He was drafted in 1945 and served in the occupational force in Japan until his discharge in 1946. In 1952, he attended Bethany Nazarene College in Oklahoma. He married Myrna Teaque on April 18, 1954, in York, Neb. Returning to Nebraska, he began his ministering career that spanned 33 years and included pastorships not only in his home state, but Wisconsin and Minnesota as well. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Chester VanOstrand. Survivors include his wife, Myrna VanOstrand, Olathe; one son, Dan VanOstrand, Round Rock, Texas; three daughters, Myra Lemons, Lenexa. Rebecca Medlin, Independence, Mo., and Martha Norris, Olathe; eight grandchildren; one brother, Gerald VanOstrand, Bakersfield, Calif.; and four foster daughters and their families. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, at the First Church of the Nazarene, Grand Island, Neb., with the Rev. Dominic Pecoraro officiating. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Plainfield Cemetery, Bradshaw, Neb. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home, Grand Island, Neb.. Memorials may be made to the Gideon International. Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Olathe is in charge of local arrangements.

Mildred Vaughn
Mildred Julia Vaughn, 82, of Overbrook, Kan., died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at a Topeka Hospital. She was born July 27, 1918, in Burlingame, Kan., the daughter of Robert and Bertha McConnell Schneider. She attended Burlingame Grade School and graduated from Carbondale High school in 1938. She was employed by Sunflower Ordnance Works in DeSoto, from 1939 to 1953 and later was a cook for Overbrook schools for seven years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Overbrook. She married Walter Jefferson Vaughn on Aug. 15, 1939, in Lyndon, Kan. They moved to Overbrook in 1942. He died Jan. 20, 1985. She also was preceded in death by one son, Steven Vaughn, in 1956. Survivors include two sons, Wayne Vaughn, Topeka, and Walter Vaughn, Overbrook; four daughters, Virginia Vaughn and Sandy Vaughn, both of Overbrook, Sharon Westmoreland, Wellington, and Janet Terrones, Olathe; 12 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, at the United Methodist Church in Overbrook. Burial will be in Overbrook Cemetery. She will lie in state from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Greenwood-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home in Overbrook and after 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Osage Fire District No. 4 Emergency Medical Services or the American Diabetes Foundation and set to Greenwood-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home, P.O. Box 268, Overbrook, KS 66524.

Garion Vest
Garion Daniel Vest, 10, DeSoto, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Children's Mercy Hospital. He was born May 15, 1990, in Hayward, Calif. Survivors include his parents, Daniel and Kristin Vest, DeSoto; and his grandparents, Skip and Carol Skyrud, Mariposa, Calif., and Charles and Sharon Vest, Bonner Springs. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel, DeSoto. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the memorial chapel. Burial will be at DeSoto Cemetery. Nancy Victorine-Dold
Nancy Lynn Victorine-Dold, 45, Gardner, died Friday, April 7, 2000, at her home. She was born Feb. 9, 1955, in Elgin, Ill. She was a 1974 graduate of Shawnee Mission North High School, and later from cosmetology school. She recently was a Florida resident, but had returned to the Gardner area five months ago. She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Charles Edward Victorine, in 1960. Survivors include a daughter, Samantha Dold, and her mother, Barbara Victorine, both of the home; three brothers, John Richard Victorine, Manassas, Va., James Michael Victorine, Washington, D.C., and Thomas Phillip Victorine, Overland Park; three sisters, Barbara Ann Mitchell, LaCygne, Susan Carol Johnson, Shawnee, and Betty Jane Friedel, Gardner; and numerous nieces and nephews. At her request, no funeral services have been scheduled. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to be sent c/o W.L. Frye and Son Mortuary and Crematory, 105 E. Loula St., Olathe, KS 66061.

Nyles Vinzant Jr.
Nyles Rudean Vinzant Jr., 45, Olathe, died Saturday, March 25, 2000, at home. He was born Sept. 8, 1954, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Nyles Rudean Vinzant Sr. and Betty Jane (Spencer) Vinzant. He was a 1972 graduate of Pleasant Hill (Mo.) High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He married Jessica Ann Akins July 13, 1985, in Harrisonville, Mo. He had lived in Pleasant Hill and Harrisonville, where he had worked at Adams Skelly, and Austin, Texas, before moving to Olathe in April 1980. He had worked previously for McCarthy Auto Plaza, Olathe, and was a mechanic for Robert Brogdon GMC Dealership, Olathe. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Harrisonville. Survivors include his wife, Jessica Vinzant, of the home; a son, Jared C. Vinzant, of the home; three daughters, Eryn K. Vinzant, of the home, Jessie L. Vinzant, Gentry, Ark., and Twila L. Vinzant, Bentonville, Ark.; two brothers, James Vinzant, Shawnee, and Terry Vinzant; and two sisters, Laura Mitchell, Harrisonville, and Lynne Fields, Pleasant Hill. The funeral was March 30. Hadley Voigts
Hadley H. Voigts, 91, Overland Park, died Friday, June 16, 2000, at Olathe Medical Center. He was born December 5, 1908, in Overland Park, the son of Emil E. and Carrie (Staver) Voigts. He had been a life long resident of Johnson County. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Olathe. He married Frances Ahlenstorf May 1, 1938, in Olathe. He worked as a dairy farmer. He was involved with the Johnson County Extension work and the Johnson County Fair Board. He was a member of the Johnson County Farm Bureau, the Soil Conservation Board, the school board, and Kiwanis. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Myron and Elvin Voigts, and an infant daughter, Rita, in 1939. Survivors include, his wife Frances, of the home; one son, Merle Voigts, Ottawa, Kan.; two daughters, Edna Pitts, El Paso, Texas, Vaunda Palmer, of Lenexa; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and 10 step-great grandchildren. Funeral Services are to be 1 p.m. today at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Olathe. Visitation is to be from 11 a.m. until service time today at the church. Burial will be at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Olathe. Contributions may be sent to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, or Olathe Medical Center. Local Arrangements made by W.L. Frye & Son Funeral Home, Olathe.

Sarah Voytko
Sarah Delma Voytko, 80, of Lenexa, died March 8, 2001, in Lenexa. She was born Sept. 28, 1920, in Audrain County, Mo., to Otis and Alice Margaret Wilson Gibson. She was a graduate of Hickman High School. On May 17, 1938, she married Henry C. Olmsted in Columbia, Mo. On April 11, 1965, she married Paul J. Voytko, in Las Vegas, Nev., and he preceded her in death. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia. She was preceded in death by one brother. She is survived by one son, Leland Wayne Olmsted, of Olathe; two grandsons and one great-granddaughter. Graveside services will be 3 at p.m. Thursday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Columbia, Mo.
